Kirk Boladeras has joined Buddle Findlay’s Auckland office as a senior solicitor in the technology, media and Kirk Boladeras telecommunications team. Kirk advises on a range of information technology, intellectual property and data privacy related issues and transactions. Before joining Buddle Findlay, Kirk worked in the IP/IT legal team at HSBC Global Banking and Markets in London.

Privacy under spotlight

The United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Right to Privacy, Professor Joseph Cannataci, will be visiting New Zealand during Privacy Week this year. Privacy week runs from 9 to 14 May. While he is in New Zealand, Professor Cannataci will give keynote presentations at Privacy Forums in Wellington on 11 May and Auckland on 12 May. Professor Cannataci is the world’s first privacy investigator at this international level. He was appointed by the United Nations to the newly created position last year. He is the Head of the Department of Information Policy and Governance at the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences of the University of Malta. He also holds the Chair of European Information Policy and Technology Law at the University of Groningen Law Faculty. Four other lawyers will also be taking part in the privacy week forums. They are the Inspector General of Intelligence and Security Cheryl Gwyn, Victoria University media law lecturer Steven Price, Taylor Shaw partner Kathryn Dalziel and Privacy Commissioner John Edwards. ▪
Justice Marcia Neave, the current Chair of the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence, will deliver the 20th Annual New Zealand Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin Commemorative Address at 1pm on Thursday 14 July at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. When Justice Neave was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria, Court of Appeals division, in February 2006, she was the only academic to be appointed to the Supreme Court in Victoria’s history. Before her appointment, Justice Neave was the foundation Chair of the Victorian Law Reform Commission and Professor of Law at Monash University. Justice Neave has held a number of distinguished academic positions, including chairs at four different Australian universities, and membership of the Hauser Global Law Faculty of the New York University School of Law. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 1999, she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her services to the law. ▪
