A Vision of Nurturing ESTHER BUNNING

Esther Bunning’s hope for the future of Aotearoa is that we nurture and encourage the voice of our youth. That we instil in them a sense of place, pride for what has come before them, a deep belief in themselves, and confidence in how they lead us into the future. Esther captured her vision with the iconic film SLR Nikon F3 paired with the unique Nikkor 105mm f/2D. “I love working with young people. They often have a clarity and a vision that is unclouded by the complexities of adult justifications, but at the same time they have a growing awareness of the impact of their individual actions on such a small nation.” – Esther Bunning

Iconic Futures with Nikon New Zealand With the turn of the 100th anniversary of Nikon – the leading photographics brand celebrates their successes and innovations by looking towards the future. Sending 10 of their most iconic SLR cameras to 10 of New Zealand’s top photographers, Nikon asked the question; “What is your singular hope for the future of New Zealand?”. So far we have seen some incredible visions from such photographers as Troy Goodall, Harry Janssen, and Jonathan Suckling over at www.iamnewzealand.co.nz/ iconic. Exploring their vision, the iconic camera they shot it with, and the new Nikkor lens they were assigned we discover the possibility of light. Nikon has maintained the basic structure of the mount ever since its introduction nearly 60 years ago, even as other SLR camera manufacturers have found it necessary to alter their lens mounts in response to changing technologies. Here are a couple of visions of the future of Aotearoa:

“... for us to continue caring about nature, and our rivers, and animals.” Yashmeen Rahim | age 12

A Vision of Preservation TROY GOODALL

Troy Goodall’s hope for the future of New Zealand is one of preservation. That we, as a nation and as individuals, preserve and protect our history by sharing our stories. Troy captured his vision with the iconic full frame Nikon D3 paired with the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E. “I believe in passing on stories, memories and traditions to our children and younger generations. It’s important that we imbue an understanding of how lucky we are to have this amazing country to call home.” - Troy Goodall Troy used lighting techniques to soften and blur the images he shared for his vision. Creating a series that feels dreamlike and ambiguous; the viewer having the opportunity to attach their own stories and feelings to the images. This vision of preservation is an important hope for Troy. A story is a snippet of history, a culmination of a collective cultural past that should, for Troy, be shared rather than locked away. By telling our story to others we gain an understanding of what makes us different and what brings us together. “I hope that by passing on the memories from my past they will be shared and protected by future generations. My vision for the future is that we remember and cherish the stories of our past” – Troy Goodall

“... to recognise my culture and for the Maori language to be something everyone is proud of. ” Awhina Southney | age 16

“... for the children of our nation to have clear waters. Rivers so clean that they can stop and drink the water flowing down the river.” Zachary Hullah | age 15

LaCie’s 2big Dock: Your Central Digital Station! Sensible Data Storage for laptop and desktop alike LaCie’s 2big Dock will

RAID 0. However, if you select RAID 1, your capacity halves, but now you have a complete backup of everything. Inside the 2big Dock are two hard drives of the same capacity, so it’s a neat way of ‘mirroring’ your data so that should one drive fail, the second drive still has your data safely stored. (However, both LaCie and experts generally would strongly suggest you still maintain a second backup unit as well.)

become the hub of your digital workflow! Plug in your memory cards, USB devices, your laptop and your desktop – it handles it all. Peter Eastway explains how the 2big Dock could work for you.

A

re you still looking for an all-in-one storage solution for your digital files? Do you want something that’s robust, offers a backup solution and that works the way you do? Over the past year, I have been working with LaCie, preparing these articles in Better Photography magazine. I was impressed enough to put my money where my mouth is and invest in a LaCie 6big, which for me holds 50TB in a RAID 5 configuration, meaning it also includes redundancy (a level of backup). The LaCie 6big allows me to have my entire digital archive (since I began digital photography) in the one box. For the way I work, this has been incredibly beneficial when it comes to finding archived files – what used to be on a separate drive ‘somewhere’ is now in the one location. What I like about the LaCie 6big is

LaCie 2big Dock – front and rear panels

that it is a standalone unit, so I can connect it to my desktop or laptop computers, and being Thunderbolt 3, it’s as fast as blazes! However, 50TB is probably overkill for many readers. So, what are some slightly smaller options that give you the same functionality?

5 Year Warranty Introducing the LaCie 2big Dock which is more than just a storage device, rather a hard disk drive on steroids! The baseline facts are you can purchase the 2big Dock in 8TB, 12TB, 16TB and 20TB configurations, so there’s plenty of storage if you set your 2big Dock to

Not that drive failure is likely as the 2big Dock uses Seagate’s IronWolf Pro enterprise class drives which have a 5-year limited warranty that includes Rescue Data Recovery Services. If something goes wrong, LaCIe will replace your drive and recover your files with one in-lab data recovery service at no additional cost – and LaCie is the only company offering this on a RAID drive!

Full Speed Ahead So, there’s plenty of storage capacity when you invest in a 2big Dock, but storage is one thing, speed is another. If you’re going to use an external

w w w. l a c i e . c o m . a u

storage device, you want the data to travel between it and your computer or memory cards at supersonic speeds. The 2big Dock features dual Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) ports, providing the fastest transfer and operational speeds currently available. TB3 is the new ‘high speed’ standard. However, if your computer isn’t yet TB3 compatible, you can still obtain very fast speeds using the additional USB 3.1 port, which is compatible with USB-C. So, whether you’re working from your laptop or a desktop, you can easily plug in the LaCie 2big Dock and your data is instantly accessible. And talking of laptops, if you’ve just bought a new one with hardly any ports for connecting external devices, then the 2big Dock could be just what you need!

Daisy Chains One of the benefits of TB3 is that you can daisy chain up to five additional LaCie drives or USB-C peripherals. And there’s also a DisplayPort connector, so you can plug in many of the latest monitors, with up to 4K resolution. In this way, the 2big Dock becomes a true hub for your digital photography

workflow. It can sit on a desk and then you plug in your computer and monitor. Or you can take it with you and set up a workstation wherever you’re travelling.

On the Front All the connectors discussed so far are found on the back of the unit, as you’d expect, but LaCie’s 2big Dock takes the hub concept a step further, providing card slots and connectors on the front as well. Think of how this works. Your LaCie 2big Dock is on your studio or home office bench, along with your computer of choice and monitor. You return from a shoot with your CompactFlash or SD storage cards and it’s time to transfer the files across. You sit down and slot the storage cards directly into the 2big Dock. If you have your computer set up correctly, the second you insert the storage card, Lightroom or Capture One etcetera will open automatically, ready to ingest your images and movies.

USB Drives Too Of course, some readers will return from location shoots with a hard drive full of images that are already loaded into folders and may have been partially edited within

Lightroom or Capture One. I use LaCie’s Rugged portable drives this way. No trouble! If your drive is USB 3.0 compatible, plug it into the front of the LaCie 2big Dock. (You can also use this USB 3.0 hub to charge your phone or connect your camera.) And if your portable drive is TB3 or USB-C – well, okay, you’ll have to use the port on the back of the 2big Dock! However, you can see that LaCie really has thought through how its new 2big Dock will be used by photographers and video producers. And the LaCie 2big Dock need never become redundant because as your storage requirements increase over the years, you simply daisy chain another LaCie unit. The challenges of managing data for photographers and video producers has never been easier – or safer. For more information, visit www.lacie. com, a specialist photo supplier or better computer suppliers Australia-wide. Eastway, Peter. LaCie 2big Dock: Your Central Digital Station. GEE GREENSLADE

Gee has a lot of hobbies. Like, ukulele, piano, hanging with dogs and sticky taping her fingers together so she can pretend she is a T-rex. She also really likes photography. So much so that she won a few major awards for it and people like to listen to her talk about it a lot. Described by Infocus Magazine as a master manipulator (photo manipulator!), Gee Greenslade is a digital wizard, pushing the limits of photography. In 2015 and then again

@geegreensladeartist

2016 this earned her the title of Australian Illustrative Photographer of the year, before that she was the South Australian Professional Photographer of the year, She also got an encouragement award from pony club that one time. Her photography is unapologetically digital, using every technique she can get her hands on to make her unexpected, whimsical digital worlds.

GEE GREENSLADE BREAK SH!T - MAKE ART Have you ever wondered what a photograph sounds like? Do images dream? Do they mind if we sing to them or if we tell them that we love them? Gee Greenslade is a Digital Artist who uses glitch techniques to ask questions about photography and to challenge ideas of what a photograph really is in our modern world. Be warned, she likes to pull out memory cards before her photos have loaded! In a whimsical love letter to photography past, present and future, Gee takes you on a journey through her life, her art making process and the technicalities of the alternative digital processes she uses to create her worlds. It’s a digital playground, a history lesson and an inspirational journey into why we need to -and should - make art

At it’s very heart, Queensberry began out of a desire to design and make beautiful things. In 1969, in Auckland New Zealand, with no money but plenty of enthusiasm, a young Heather Baugh decided that she’d like to make her mother a leather handbag. Coming from a family of artists and designers, creativity was in her DNA, and she soon discovered an affinity for leather that led her to start her own handcraft leather business. Heather made albums from the start, and as the family business continued to grow Queensberry’s partnership with photographers created a strong foundation. Today, every product and service under the Queensberry brand must stand up to the test of making life for the professional photographer simpler, more profitable and more fun, from beautiful products and presentation, to online hosting and e-commerce. At the same time we never forget Heather’s insight that we, with our photographer partners, are here to serve those “strangers in the viewfinder” by crafting their memories into treasured possessions that tell their unique stories.

It’s Cassandra’s creative passion for her work, coupled with her technical skills in photography and design that sets her apart from others in the industry.
