MESSAGE FROM THE

MESSAGE FROM THE

Welcome to the 2016 NZ International Comedy Festival powered by Flick Electric Co!

The 2016 New Zealand Comedy Festival powered by Flick Electric Co. is a favourite fixture on Auckland’s annual arts and entertainment calendar.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR We believe that laughing matters, so we’ve curated a programme full of hilarious comedians that will make you do just that. Enjoy reading through the following pages, discovering new comedians and recognising some faces you may already love. A huge thanks to the team at Flick Electric Co. for coming on board as our major sponsor this year and supporting comedy in New Zealand. With their backing, we’re looking forward to bringing you an exceptional Festival, featuring a diverse range of local and international performers. And there’s a groundswell of emerging talent in Auckland that we’re excited to introduce you to as well. Alongside the Festival, we’re also proud of the development work the New Zealand Comedy Trust undertakes, with initiatives both supporting comedians development and bringing audiences new forms of comedy. We’re looking forward to staging two of these new initiatives, dialogue: mum’s the word & the E tū showcase, this year. We love that the Festival is a chance to see comedy like you’ve never seen it before, and we really encourage you to grab the opportunity to see comedians craft a one-hour show, as well as enjoying a tasty sample at our showcase events.

MAYOR OF AUCKLAND I applaud the Festival organisers for bringing together such a diverse and broad line-up of comedians and shows, a great mix of favourites and exciting newcomers. Events like this, which showcase the best of local and international talent, generate a great buzz for Auckland. They make Auckland a more exciting and interesting place to live, work and visit, and provide a boost to our regional economy, including jobs for our creative and hospitality industries. It is great to have a dedicated event to celebrate and champion the art of making people laugh. Enjoy!

The New Zealand Comedy Trust was established as a charitable trust to champion the art of laughter. It is responsible for the annual Comedy Festival and works to foster the growth of comedy as a performing art in New Zealand. The Trust aims to provide a platform for New Zealand comedy in all its forms, as well as showcasing the best of international comedy to New Zealand audiences. Our development initiatives include The Billy T Award, Class Comedians, The Fred Award, Comedy Lab, and Creative Comedy Initiative, which ultimately aim to help comedians establish a career in comedy. A BL**DY BRIEF HiSTORY OF SWEARING

A hilarious collection of solo works from a trio of recent Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School graduates.

He has 2.5 million social media followers, but who is Alex really? Loose Aussie bloke? International philanthropist? Depressed soul? Shooter Williamson? Child slave trafficker? Lucky for us, Alex prefers a room full of strangers over a shrink for outpouring his hilarious interpretations of a fucked up world.

This is one man's attempt to discover why a handful of words in the English language still have the power to shock, offend and amuse in equal measure. Alexis uncovers the science of swearing, the ancestry of all your favourite swears, and why the fuck we do it in the first place. Contains swearing.

TOGETHER AGAIN AT LAST... FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

60 minutes. 110 jokes. Two fools. Like an awkward family reunion where the two who show up have nothing in common.

Hit YouTube heroes Aunty Donna are thundering into NZ for the first time. Unique, tight, fresh, filthy, but best of all just flat out, laugh 'til your face hurts funny. Hold onto your seats and don't blink! You won’t want to miss a beat.

Richard Lindesay – think the world's funniest thesaurus. Non-stop one liners guaranteed to have you laughing and thinking at the same time.

Expect 60 mins of pure killer sketch-comedy that transports you into their warped world – turning the ridiculous into the sublime.

Ashton Brown then shows up – late as usual – a younger brother that insists he's an artist so doesn't need a real job. His life and experiences are so filled with comedic woe that 10 stories in and your sides will hurt so much you'd almost wish he had got his life together.

“ …comparable to some glorious crossbreed of The Mighty Boosh and Flight of the Conchords… split sides were universal” )())( – Broadway Baby, UK

Join these fools for an hour of stand-up, sketch comedy and improvisation – two grown men – different styles – same results. Hilarity.

LoOKING AT MYSELF

AUSTRALIA'S HOTTEST NEW COMEDIANS

CoMEDIANS FOR HiRE

Award-winning Wellington comedian, Brad Zimmerman, doesn't know about politics, sport, celebrity gossip, animal trivia, or pretty much anything.

A showcase of the hottest emerging Australian comedic talent, starring Rhys Nicholson, Becky Lucas, Gen Fricker and Ray Badran.

Brendan & Tony are Comedians for Hire, literally.

What he does know is himself. He's a husband, a father, a traveller, a nerd, and a couple other things as well. So he'll probably talk about that.

Off the back of sold-out festival shows and rave reviews, this award-winning ensemble is letting loose its considerable comedic chops in NZ for the first time to deliver a rollicking showcase of world-class comedy at Basement Theatre.

CLASS COMEDIANS SHOWCASE

THE WILD BLUE YONDER

EgGS & HAM

STARRING THE 2016 CLASS COMEDIANS

Brendhan Lovegrove returns with a brand new show for 2016. Voted nine times best NZ male comedian at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards, his shows have sold out over the last three years, so get in quick.

Great news! Brendon Green is back with a cracking new show that celebrates the ridiculousness of life, the futility of effort, and the absurd moral arbitrariness of our society. But in a fun way! The exclamation points make it better! Right?!

Start 'em young, we say!

It may be the last chance to see him (or any comic) if Turkey shoots down another Russian jet, then Russia responds and then boom, WW3… lols.

Eggs & Ham is about trying new things, so why not do that yourself?

AWESOME? NAH, BRO.

FRESH COMEDY EVERY TIME

HOSTED BY ALAN MCELROY

Since becoming a father, I'm truly happy for the first time ever, but that doesn't mean I've stopped disliking a lot of stuff. From NZ "Socialites", to people who post inspirational quotes, to DJ's, there's a lot of annoying people on this earth. Join me as I dissect the people I desperately hope my daughter doesn't turn into.

It's improv rookie night. Recent graduates of our training program take to the stage for the first time ever and are joined by some old hands. Hosted by members of The Improv Bandits, The Covert Players perform scenes, sagas and stories all made up on the spot. It's crash 'n' burn comedy at its finest!

After selling out and fantastic reviews in 2015, Crack Up Quiz Nights & The Paddington in Parnell return to provide the funniest, most entertaining multimedia pub quiz around! Think you’re smart? Come and be part of this one-off special comedy quiz.

CHILDREN & OTHER MISTAKES

DARK

HoNEST BRO...

At 30 years old, Daniel John Smith has decided not to have children. With reasons ranging from the state of the world (not great), to his own perceived shortcomings as a father (many), he will present observations of children and memories of his own youth and parents in an attempt to convince you (and himself) that this choice is the right one.

An unmissably brilliant smash-hit show from Scotland’s internationally acclaimed and award-winning comedian. Featured on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, Conan, Sunday Night at Palladium, his BBC show Adventures of Daniel, at 25 Daniel has already sold out eight consecutive Edinburgh Fringes. On top of it all, he’s completely sick of people calling his comedy ‘dark’.

True tales of bizarre experiences are the most hilarious and between us, we’ve had a few. Working as a cop, a clown and a nurse has gifted us some absolute cracker stories to share!

ANARCHIST COOK

IS HE EVEN REAL?

GUY MoNTGOMERRY CHRISTMAS!

One man, one hour, 3 courses.

Famous for his hilarious musical parodies, Gish has been missing from the Festival for the last three years, but fret not, Gish has been found! Apparently he was merely stuck in a time loop travelling through a space-time continuum. And he’s brought a mate back with him, The Mincer of Mangamuka.

Who said Christmas doesn't happen in May? Everyone? Well it looks like everyone could use a helping of Christmas cheer… and chairs. Chairs will be provided, we're not savages.

MoON BABY

SMELL THE PENGUINS!

Guy Williams is a privileged white man and life is working out bloody great. This show aims to address gender and racial privilege in New Zealand in 2016. The key word is "aims", no refunds. That was a joke. I probably would give you a refund if you really wanted it.

Hamish wants to get to the moon.

Step inside the mind of a dickhead… it's good in there.

In one hour he will go through every gruelling situation on Earth to both prepare himself for the moon, and earn his place on it.

He actually doesn't know much, but he's an award-winning comedian with 10 years experience. That's a decade of stupid. Harley fills a brand new hour with tips and tricks to life that you never thought you needed. Because you don't.

With the world in such turmoil recently, only one comedian is standing up and saying, "What a stink buzz!"

Sold out at the NZ Comedy Fest in 2013 and 2014, James is back and bringing with him a brand new show the likes of which no one has seen before. Be the first in the world to see it!

James Malcolm is obsessed with Chris Warner from Shortland Street – and what better platform to capture the attention of arguably New Zealand's sexiest man, than a Billy T nominated Comedy Festival show, where he can publicly declare his feelings for Doctor Love.

As seen on the BBC’s John Bishop Show and Russell Howard’s Good News

IT GOES ON...

THE MOA SHOW

THREE NIGHT STAND

Jamie brings us the final installment in an unintentional trilogy of shows. First came tragedy and crisis. Then resolution. Now there are just questions. Brilliantly baffling questions.

When you wake up with a headache and your bed is made of leaves – it's time to cut back on the drink. When a guitar-playing hermit offers you drugs – it might be time to reassess your life.

Winner of the NZCG "Best Live Show" 2014 & 2015 and also with consecutive nominations for the prestigious Fred Award in 2014 & 2015, Jamie is in top comedic form.

When you fail your job interview with a racist spotted Kiwi – it's time to seek help from the Moa.

Known for his hilarious insight and social commentary, Jeremy (TV3's 7 Days, Comedy Gala, AotearoHA) delivers a night of brilliant comedy. Drawing on his experience of more than 15 years as a comic, this is a showcase of one of New Zealand's best stand-ups.

CLUE: Someone who has the opportunity to actually like their power company – pay a more honest price – and potentially save Trump-ish wodges of cash… and chooses not to. Because they’re busy that day. Or their cat exploded. Or they have a lingering urge to be spanked, really hard, just like the filthy, naughty little sin-pot they are.

MLC CAFÉ AND BAR

Al Brown’s Federal Delicatessen is a bustling kitchen full of action and conversation like an old school Jewish Deli in New York.

Located in the historic MLC building, opposite the Q theatre, MLC Café and Bar features delicious pre-show dining and drinks. Watch as the hustle of the city goes by and enjoy your meal filled with New Zealand’s freshest ingredients and a stunning selection of the country’s finest wines to match.

EL FARO Nestled at the back of “Elliott Stables” is a treasure trove of authentic Latin American gourmet delights. Conceived and designed by Mexican Artist Cecilia Mijangos, partner to award-winning Chef Luis Cabrera, the beautifully decorated space is an elegant and inviting evocation of old world hacienda and quaint Pueblo marketplace.

The Fed is all about informality, fun and generosity – no need for table cloths here as eating deli is a meal of spills. Think comfort food like hand-cut specialty meats, cured lox & rotisserie chicken, poutine, deluxe salads, dessert pie by the slice and more. With bottomless cups of joe and a carefully constructed cocktail & wine list on offer – The Fed is perfect anytime of day.

Translated as “Latin Kisses”, Besos Latinos promises to romance your palate with a mouth-watering exploration of traditional Latin American cuisine and a fine selection of international wines and delicious Latin Cocktails. This is an establishment not to be missed and one you’ll find yourself coming back to time and time again.

Tanuki Japanese Sushi and Sake Bar is an Izakaya style restaurant, located between The Classic & Q Theatre. In Japan, Izakaya sake shops allow their customers to remain in store to eat while they try the sake. If you’re looking for a quick, no hassle meal before or after a show, Tanuki’s informal Japanese pub food could be just the ticket. Made fresh, their delicious plates are perfect for sharing with friends (as is tradition at Izakayas). If you’d rather bring your own wine, Tanuki is BYO on Sunday nights. Choice! Tanuki also has a private function room which seats 35 people, offering set menu options and your very own wait person for the night.

Q Theatre’s Café and Bar is a popular hangout spot when you’re on the go between comedy gigs. Open late every night during the Festival, Q’s bar becomes a destination where audiences and artists come together, a place you can share a drink or two with your favourite comic moments after seeing them on stage!

Late and Loose will be everything you hope a late-night show will be: raucous, impromptu, unpredictable and hilarious (hopefully that's what you were thinking).

The truth is out there – and Natasha Hoyland thinks she's found it. What came first, the chicken or the egg? While she may or may not have the answer to such a question, she's sure to enlighten you with her conspiracy theories and observations on food and other things.

Because we love Auckland, we want it to be better. Because the best schools aren’t good enough and the worst ones need a revolution. Because the politicians get it wrong and so do the academics and the lawyers and the cops and the artists and the banks. Not always, but too often, so things need to be said. Exposed. Argued. Laughed at. Because there are so many good things to eat, and wear, and see and hear and be a part of (and sometimes they’re not as good as they should be either, which also needs to be said). Because we cherish so many of the people of this city, and we want to tell you about them and show them to you. Because of all this: Isn't it time you picked up a copy of the latest Metro magazine?

PAX ASSADI

CAMPING

TRUE DEFECTiVE

IN MID-SEASON FORM

Chris Parker, Thomas Sainsbury, Kura Forrester and Brynley Stent mince around stage in the overly-dramatic-cum-campest-drawing-room drama Auckland will have ever seen.

We get the Comedy we deserve.

Pax Assadi is in mid-season form and is coming to the Comedy Fest to prove it.

Paul Douglas once dreamt of becoming a Part-time Comedian/Part-time Detective (seriously). With his 30's impending he may be a professional comic but he's only been at one potential crime scene, come find out where.

After spending a whole year performing his hairy little butt off up and down the country, Pax is hitting his stride and is fast becoming one of the most exciting young comedians in the country.

His stories will make you laugh so hard your guts will hurt. You will not have the right to remain silent.

When will this hot streak end? Maybe never! (Probably soon, so it's best you catch him while he's still quite good).

One of the best comedians on the NZ circuit. You deserve to see Paul Douglas.

"A genuine talent with a natural gift for stand-up" – Keeping Up With NZ

Winner – Breakthrough Comedian, NZ Comedy Guild

"He has funny bones…" – Theatreview

"Great storyteller, great stories, ripping comedy" – The Classic

Join Rhys as he records his favourite material from the past 3 years for a new comedy special!

He's 25, he's been doing stand-up for 10 years and this Festival he's changing it up. Rhys Mathewson is back with another one of those block-rocking comedy shows, and he's thrown in something the likes of which has never been seen. That's not true – it's definitely been seen before – but it's new for him and it'll be exciting for you.

AN EVENiNG WITH SAMMY J & RANDY

In 1996 Rhys Darby and Grant Lobban formed Rhysently Granted. Part sketch-comedy, part music, all surreal silliness, they were a huge hit in Christchurch with their fanbase reaching the double digits.

Rose is 24 years old a.k.a. "not a girl, not yet a woman" (Britney Spears). Come listen to the musings of a young lady who's just trying to figure it all out, tell it like it is and get her head around this crazy thing called life! And hey, maybe she'll even learn a few lessons along the way.

Stars of their own hit TV show back home, Australia's favourite skinny man and purple puppet, Sammy J & Randy are hitting the road armed with nothing but a keyboard and a suitcase of songs. Plus undies. Plus toothpaste. Plus an assortment of international power adaptors. But mostly, songs.

lol jk, it's just an hour of jokes.

As seen on TV3's Chopper's Republic of Anzakistan.

Shows may be filmed.

20 years later, disillusioned and lost, the two old BFF's decide to get the band back together and rekindle the comedy magic that started everything.

NERVOUS BREAKTHROUGH

SHE WAS PROBABLY NOT A ROBOT

WOMANz

After 2 years spent recovering from a nervous breakdown, a broken heart, a car crash, a stint in rehab and a particularly bad reaction to tofu, Hughes is lucky to be alive, let alone funny.

A lo-fi, DIY, off-beat, sci-fi storytelling experience; a surreal, soulful comedy about a decomposing world and a cosmic visitor. When the world ends in flood and fire, one man, asleep on his air-mattress, floats out of his bedroom window, through burning debris and out to sea to be the sole survivor and last hope for humanity.

Spandex, sequins and killer dance moves collide in Tessa Waters multi-award winning feisty physical comedy. Like the manic pixie love-child of Cher and Mr Bean, WOMANz is a sexually liberated goddess from the stars and she is here to party.

Sublime storytelling and joyful physical theatre.

OUT OF THE WHIRLWiND

Tim Batt is sick of the world's shit. So he's running for office. What office? It doesn't matter. What matters is you joining the revolution. Happiness, liberty and psychedelic drug experiences for all.

Finally, the long awaited and much anticipated "show with a pun title" from Tom Furniss!

Multi award-winning Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan is back, following his sold-out tour in 2013.

You'll know him from The Rock's Morning Rumble, TV3's 7 Days, and who can possibly forget the imagery of Tom having a spa with his Gran on TV3's After Hours.

After 20 years he's still as passionate as ever about the adventure of storytelling, and he's also starting to take some very exciting risks. There are no manners on him, profound, dark, and silly too, his performance mesmerises in a way that is joyful, uplifting, inspirational and most importantly always breathtakingly funny.

BACK CATALOGUE

Forget writing in 3rd person, I'll just tell you. My name is Wes (from Vancouver). My show features magic, comedy, and stunts. It's the kind of show where anything goes. I might convince strangers to kiss, shoot a blow-dart gun, or take the stage in my underwear.

What We Talk About is a live storytelling event and podcast. Each show hosts Alice May Connolly and Eamonn Marra ask a different line-up of our favourite comedians to entertain us with their greatest obsessions.

Wilson Dixon is back with a back catalogue of obscure songs and stories from his childhood, the distant past and some ancient family history. (NB This "back catalogue" is not to be confused with a collection of diagrams, explanations and information about Wilson's spine and related disc issues, of which there are many. You can't expect to ride an angry horse for a decade and escape scott-free).

Basically it's awesomeness from start to finish. I have 28 million YouTube views, and have been on TV shows including America's Got Talent, MTV, and Penn & Teller: Fool Us (Which I won!). But don't take my word for it… come check it out.
