Finishing strong

The final two years are focussed on professional practice. Students learn the ins and outs of running a chiropractic business, they build their own client base and transform the lives of local communities. It’s during this time that students put the philosophy, art and science of chiropractic into practice.

The first two years at the College focus on gaining an understanding of the philosophy of chiropractic and chiropractic communication alongside the practical skills required to become an excellent adjuster. The curriculum covers a wide range of well-established chiropractic techniques and the coursework expands on prerequisite scientific understanding of how the body works and what happens if it doesn’t.

“I knew I was keen on the College's programme, but adding in the aspect of a new adventure and being able to travel was a big drawcard as well.”

With three years of study ahead of her, Randall is excited to build her knowledge and skills and to use her internship years to put these into practice with a wide range of community members as she refines her future plans.

Meet Randall, a first-year student from Vancouver who was so keen to come to the College, she was willing to wait.

As well as learning the skills to become a great chiropractor, Randall plans to make the most of the fact she’s living on other the side of the world. “I want to see every inch of New Zealand as much as I can while I am here.”

She researched a number of chiropractic schools in Canada and the west coast of the US before her family chiropractor suggested she attend the College's local information event, a suggestion that turned out to be a game-changer.

“Being open minded and jumping right into opportunities was a big thing I promised myself I was going to do by coming here; it’s all part of the adventure.”

While she has experienced bouts of homesickness and has had to overcome some challenges with settling, Randall says she finds the College, her fellow students and Kiwis in general hugely supportive and welcoming. “Kiwis and Canadians are very similar, so it hasn’t been too much of a change there. Auckland is also very similar to the west coast of Canada, so there wasn’t really any culture shock per se.”

A natural fit

1Pre Year 2 Year 3 Year 4

Randall has been adjusted herself since she was an infant and was exposed to a range of healthcare modalities growing up, which she says gave her a clear understanding of the path she wanted to follow. After high school, Randall did an undergraduate degree in kinesiology and began exploring career options and shadowing a number of professionals to get a feel for each profession. “I shadowed my own family chiropractor a number of times and through that started to see myself enjoying the lifestyle as well as the instant gratification I could offer to people as a chiropractor.”

Randall's StoryYear

In no rush to leave

Now that she’s settled, Randall has joined the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) and is finding new opportunities to connect with others and further broaden her horizons.

Get stuck in!

Meet Katie, a second year student from Okotoks, a small town south of Calgary, who has dreamed of being a chiropractor since she was 15.

Katie is excited to get stuck into her internship and Chiropractic Centre experience over the next two years. After that, she plans to sit her Canadian board exams, so that setting up a practice back at home is an option for her.

Year 1Pre Year 2 Year 3 Year 4

Katie's Story

12

A clear vision

She’s not planning to head straight back to Canada though, opting instead to stay in New Zealand for a couple more years to get some local practice as an associate and explore the country further.

A world of opportunity

“Coming to New Zealand has opened my mind to other options. My studies and connections here are opening up so many opportunities for me.”

Doing well together

Since officially joining on campus, Katie has continued her passion for connecting and networking. “All the College events are great for meeting people, having fun, making connections, and networking with others in the profession.”

She says College community really has become her local family, with the College and students creating a strong support system for each other. “Even before I left Canada I had College staff helping with the administrative side of life in New Zealand. The College is so on to it with those sorts of things, you’re not left on your own.”

Katie was a 15-year-old high school student when her father drove her to Calgary city to hear the College present its course to potential Canadian students - and she was instantly hooked. She sent in her application and, from that point, focussed her sights on doing what she needed to do to make her chiropractic dreams a reality, including selecting subjects in high school that would set her up well for her tertiary chapter, which she also hoped would allow her to explore new parts of the world. “I had never been to New Zealand but I had always had the idea that my University years would be a good time to get some travel in too, so having my chiropractic school of choice based in New Zealand allowed me to do both.”

It’s this flexibility and balance which Katie says she really appreciates about the chiropractic profession and plans to fully leverage in the years to come. “I want to help people but enjoy myself as well.”

Students are part of a tight-knit community at our College, with a vibrant student life to balance with their academic studies.

There is lots happening outside of the lecture rooms that students can delve into.

There are lots of opportunities for students to step up into leadership roles by becoming part of the CSA and Student Council, or being involved in the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS).

For those into sports, students can keep fit at our campus gym and be involved with one of our many sports teams such as touch rugby, softball, hockey and volleyball.

such as practical technique clubs, as well as research, chiropractic philosophy and communication, help students further explore their areas of interest.

The Chiropractic Students’ Association (CSA) is the students’ voice, support network and organises lots of fun events throughout the Clubs, year.

Relaxing and catching up on campus is easy in our cosy student lounge and meeting spaces.

Supported by experienced mentors

From their first year at the College, students have the opportunity to be involved in the Centre by observing interns and mentors, helping out with community events and developing their communication skills.

Taking chiropractic into the community Students also have the opportunity to be involved in regular community events in the Auckland region. These events give interns the opportunity to talk to the public about the benefits of chiropractic care and offer complimentary spine checks.

“Communication is an important skill any chiropractor should have and it’s something you can't only teach in a classroom. It’s because of these unique experiences that students graduate as eloquent communicators of chiropractic.”

Practice member interactions

14

It’s here students take everything they have learned and put it into practice. During their time at the Centre, interns develop their technique, communication and business skills and are given the space to grow into a world-class chiropractor.

Our on-campus Chiropractic Centre is the largest in the southern hemisphere and provides a real-world experience for chiropractic interns completing the final two years of their degree.

The College’s chiropractic interns benefit from expert faculty members and chiropractors who bring real-life experience. Being exposed to an array of mentors allows individual students to connect with a wide range of people and experiences.

Interns work with people from all stages of life, from newborn babies to the elderly and from those needing acute care to those looking to enhance their wellbeing.

Every interaction in the Chiropractic Centre is viewed as a learning experience. To graduate, interns must complete a minimum of 500 visits during their time at the Centre, but usually go well above this number.

Dr Lisa Jian Course Coordinator, Chiropractic Practice

Adam’s desire to come back to New Zealand, plus the prompt and friendly response he immediately got from the College when enquiring sealed the deal for him.

15

Meet Adam, a 35 year-old father of one from British Columbia, Canada in his final years at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic.

Adam describes being in New Zealand as a ‘home away from home’ and found it easy to settle in.

He says the College picked him up from the airport when he arrived in Auckland, connected him with alumni and offered tips on setting up.

Back to student life

In the spirit of making New Zealand his new home, Adam researched the sports on offer locally and was happy to find his favourites were well catered for. “Sport is a great de-stressor for me, so I was pleased to know I could continue to play softball in the summer and ice hockey in the winter.”

He’s becoming practice-ready at the Chiropractic Centre on campus which helps put him into the mindset of being a chiropractic professional.

Adam and his wife had both spent time in New Zealand in their 20's and fell in love with the country, so when it came time to finding a school to support his chiropractic ambitions, it wasn’t a hard decision to make.

Keeping it in the family

During Adam’s third year at the College he and his wife welcomed their first child into the world. “I’m not going to lie, it’s a huge challenge studying full time and having a baby, but with the support of my wife and the flexibility of the College, it is possible.”

Dad life versus student life

Now in his final years at the College, Adam feels like everything is coming together.

Adam was first introduced to chiropractic when he met his now wife, whose father is a successful chiropractor in Canada. When he gave Adam a first-hand experience of the benefits of the practice, he was hooked.

Year 1Pre Year 2 Year 3 Year 4

“It is really exciting being so close to the graduation line and also very humbling.”

Convinced of his passion for serving others, Adam went on to study massage therapy and set up his own successful practice. After discussions with his wife about what they wanted their future to look like, he decided to re-train in chiropractic. “My wife and I looked to the future and agreed that, through chiropractic, I could better serve my clients from a well-being point of view.”

“To get out of the city is one of the best things you can do. New Zealand’s countryside is beautiful and there’s so much to see and do.”

Meet Dylan and Victoria, a couple from Ontario who’ve made New Zealand their home away from home while they follow their chiropractic dreams.

Dylan and Victoria have always had a passion for helping people. They met whilst studying kinesiology and, after jointly committing to a career in chiropractic, began researching schools across the US and Canada together. Both struggled with the disconnect they discovered between their own personal values and the values of the colleges on offer, but, after being introduced to the College immediately connected with the Kiwi college’s vitalistic approach and applied to join.

Global impact from down under Now in their fourth and final year at the College, Dylan and Victoria are firmly part of the worldwide chiropractic movement and agree that being based in a small country on the other side of the world hasn’t stopped them from making a global impact on the chiropractic stage.

Dylan and Victoria have been just as passionate about exploring New Zealand in their spare time as they have been about the chiropractic profession. This love for seeing the country’s sights is so strong, they’ve even decided to extend their stay.

Dylan Victoria’s Story

between WCCS and each of the partner schools around Asia and the South Pacific. He held the position for a year and says he’s made priceless connections as a result. “I basically know chiropractors all around the world now and being able to network with them has allowed me to get different perspectives and have a better understanding of what chiropractic is like globally.” Victoria also played a leadership role within WCCS, acting as the College's representative in the organisation.

“We have made very different connections being here than we ever would have made if we had stayed in Canada."

Both agree combining the opportunity to travel with the opportunity to continue your education is a great way to make the most out of time abroad and recommended other international students consider doing the same, both for the life experience and the important balance it offers.

After attending the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) AGM in Brisbane in his first year, Dylan was nominated to be the organisation’s regional co-ordinator, joining the international executive team as the liaison

Taking your degree to the world

Our soon-to-be graduates are in an enviable position, and it isn’t unusual to have multiple job offers as you get close to graduation. Our accreditation from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia means you are licensed to practise in New Zealand and Australia.

His advice to other Canadian students considering the move to New Zealand to study chiropractic is to “go to the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, have fun, work hard and have your life forever changed”.

Preparing to practise in Canada

Kurtis’s Story

Now back home and working as an established chiropractor at a local Edmonton practice, Kurtis says he feels driven to share as much of his learnings from New Zealand with the rest of the world as possible.

“I’m on a mission to create the same chiropractic community over here that I loved so much in New Zealand.”

Whether or not to return home to Canada after graduation was a tough decision, which he admits to having mixed feelings about. While the initial intention was always to return home, by his third year he had fallen in love with New Zealand and its people and even had local practices reaching out to him with job offers. However, during a Christmas visit back home, he saw the opportunity to use his skills and education to make a difference in his local community.

He believes the College’s unique academic programme and approach to chiropractic warrants a worldwide movement and it was this belief that drove him to leave New Zealand.

“I felt a calling to spread the word to communities that needed it more.”

Kurtis says students and teachers alike went out of their way to support Canadian students taking the Board exams. “From out-of-hours meetings, to student study groups, the College went above and beyond to support those of us preparing for the tests.” He believes the culture and sense of calm at the school helps students to feel less flustered going into the exams. “The people at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic go above and beyond to make sure everyone succeeds, which I think is amazing.”

Meet Kurtis, a College graduate who returned to his hometown of Edmonton, Canada after graduating to spread the College’s vitalistic approach to chiropractic across the world.

Taking chiropractic to the world

Practising in Canada wasn’t as simple as hopping on a plane and accepting a local job. To be registered to practise in Canada, students must pass the Canadian Chiropractic Board Exams. They are tough tests, but the College’s academic programme prepares students well for them.

Situated in a residential area, most students live within walking distance or a short drive from the College.
