NEW MEMBERS’ FUNCTION The first event following a General Election is the ‘New Members Function’ to which all new Members of Parliament are invited to meet with Trust representatives and Associate Members to learn about the work on the Trust in general and to promote the Business Attachment programme.

Those new Members unable to be present were sent a ‘Welcome Pak’. Gretta Stephens, Trust Board member was the host for the evening together with our President, the Rt Hon Trevor Mallard MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

AGM, AWARDS & PRESENTATIONS The 26th AGM of the New Zealand Business & Parliament Trust was held on Wednesday 4 April 2018 in Parliament’s Grand Hall, attended by both parliamentarians and representatives of the Trust’s Corporate membership.

The meeting was chaired by Peter Griffiths. Nancy McConnell was re-elected for a further term of three years and will continue in the role of Deputy Chair. John Dakin, Chief Executive Goodman Group was elected to the Trustee Council vice Russell Stanners who was not seeking a further term.

The meeting ratified a number of changes to the Trustee Council reflecting changes at the political level following on from the General Election.

KRISHMA PATEL AND REBEKKA EVANS OF VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON NAMED RECIPIENTS OF THE NZ BUSINESS AND PARLIAMENT TRUST PRIZES FOR 2017 My name is Karishma Patel and I am a Masters student of International Relations at Victoria University, due to finish my dissertation very soon. Last year I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Parliamentary Internship programme supervised by Professor Stephen Levine, as a part of my degree.

Interning at Parliament and subsequently being chosen to intern at Congress in Washington, D.C., as well as interning and working in other parts of the public sector and nongovernmental sector has made me realise that my passion is working in the interests of the public; namely, the New Zealand public. Therefore, to study politics and international relations has been very enjoyable and challenging for me.

I am honoured and delighted to hear that my research for this class which tackled the question of “What Constitutes Political Success?” has earned me a New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust Prize.

To the New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust:

Rebecca Evans – Trust Prize recipient was unfortunately unable to be present in person to receive her prize.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making the New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust Prize a possibility. I was surprised, but also very thrilled, to learn that I had been selected as one of the two recipients of this award. 2017 was a very eventful year for me, not least because I was able to complete a fantastic internship at Parliament as part of my Honours programme of study. I feel deeply honoured that the research essay I completed in relation to this course has helped me become a recipient of this award.

This year I will embark on a Master of International Relations at Victoria, which has been a goal of mine since I first started studying at Victoria

To be recognised for such an honour is both heartening and humbling; and I really appreciate it. Not only will your generosity help me set up the next chapter of my life, but it also provides affirmation to me that with passion comes excellence.

A prize possessing this level of prestige is not only a financial aid, but also a driver of future success. It enables students like me to continue to chase success in fields about which they are passionate, and I am pleased to know that just as with the students who have won this award before me, the students after me will also feel a renewed sense of confidence and motivation for their futures.

This letter is but a small token of my appreciation for this prize, which is deeply generous of the Trust. I will endeavour to always keep my passions alive and to continue to love the work that I do.

So far this year the Trust has been pleased to support 15 schools in undertaking educational visits to Parliament organised by the Parliament Education Unit.

We have discovered a little funding from us can make all the difference and that students who would not normally be given the opportunity to visit their Parliament, are able to do so. We are also impressed with how many of the rural and small town schools are supported by their communities through fundraising ventures.

PARLIAMENTARY SEMINAR The first Parliamentary Seminar for 2018 saw a number of first- time presenters amongst the impressive political line-up.

We were honoured that the Prime Minister Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern spoke to participants on the theme Exercising Government through Parliament – a key objective of the Trust’s learning strategy.

The Hon Simon Bridges as the recently elected Leader of the Opposition followed and shared his thoughts on the role of Opposition parties in the MMP environment.

BUSINESS STUDY ATTACHMENT PROGRAMMES Hon Meka Whaitiri undertook an attachment with Beef & Lamb NZ in 2017.

One of the Trust’s anchor projects are the Business Study Attachment programmes which enable Members of Parliament to learn about businesses

and industries that impact on New Zealand’s economic future. This is a learning opportunity for parliamentarians.

A great institution which many people will never have heard of is the NZ Business and Parliament Trust. The Trust builds connections between businesses and Parliamentarians often business doesn’t quite understand how Parliament works, and vice-versa. One of the best things they do is facilitate MPs spending time at businesses on secondment, doing a deep-dive into the business and learning more about what they do.

Last week I was very fortunate to spend three days with Air New Zealand in Christchurch and Auckland. An awesome experience which involved checking out their regional and international operations, engineering and maintenance units, time in the bowels of Christchurch airport looking at baggage and more, talking to their sustainability, investor relations and network teams to name a few, plus a bit of time up the tower at Auckland airport!

A fantastic three days - thanks Air New Zealand and to every staff member who generously gave of their time.

BUSINESS AWAY DAY FOR MPs TVNZ hosted the 2018 ‘Business Away Day’ for Members of Parliament at their Head Office in Auckland on 30 May. Participating MPs were welcomed by Scotty Morrison before receiving a briefing from Chief Executive Kevin Kenrick on the role TVNZ plays in NZ life and the company’s future plans.

It was then into the studio for some interactive content with the Breakfast Team (Jack Tame, Hayley Holt, Matt McLean and Daniel Faituau) with a number of MPs putting their presentation skills to the test in front of the camera!

Following the excitement in front of the camera, the morning programme concluded with a focus on the changing media landscape and the power of TV through advertising.

The focus in the afternoon turned to new initiatives (HEIHEI and New Blood), local storytelling, social media news voice and looking at Maori and Pasifika perspectives.

A guided tour of TVNZ building taking in the high tech play out facilities and a look into TVNZ’s digital future brought the programme to a conclusion.

Darryl has extensive knowledge of the parliamentary and executive government environments through his previous positions in the Visits & Ceremonial Office and Constitutional Services (Dept of Internal Affairs) and the Office of the Clerk (Interparliamentary relations and education).

Darryl is actively engaged with various Commonwealth NGOs. He was awarded the MNZM in 2013 for services to youth and the Commonwealth.
