CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA AND APPLICATION


CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP Corporate membership of the New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust is open to corporate businesses / organisations who agree to support the Trust’ aims of advancing and encouraging business understanding of Parliament and Parliamentarians’ understanding of business, and, who have the necessary structure to provide Members of Parliament with a meaningful study programme. The Trust is supported from the most senior levels of Parliament and business. Its aim is to inform, not indoctrinate, and it is non-partisan and therefore neutral. To underline the non-partisan nature of the Trust, the Speaker of the House of Representatives is, by convention, the President. All events and seminars except for the MPs Business Away Day, are held at Parliament.

Prospective Corporate members are required to support the Trust’s overall aims and objectives: to enable Members of Parliament to widen their experience in, and increase their knowledge of, business to improve business managers’ understanding of how Parliament and the Executive works Applicants for Corporate membership must give an undertaking to the Trust Board, who in electing corporate businesses | organisations take into account sector balance, that : the company | organisation will commit the time to organising study programmes for Parliamentarians and give their own personal time to benefit from reciprocal programmes the enterprise will not use its membership of the Trust for lobbying purposes

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

PARTICIPATE in one-day parliamentary study programmes structured around the themes of how Government is exercised through Parliament and on the machinery of Executive Government and Parliament with the opportunity to hear directly from Ministers and Members of Parliament, political staffers and key advisors.

The New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust was established in 1991 to help bridge a perceived gap of understanding between Members of Parliament and the business community.

ATTEND Business overview addresses and dialogue forums Featuring leaders and innovators in their fields of expertise … corporate, social enterprise, non-governmental and future thinking. These events also provide the opportunity to mix and mingle informally with members of Parliament. ATTEND President’s Dinners (for Corporate CEOs). HOST Business Study Programme Attachments for Members of Parliament. The Trust offers Members of Parliament a unique opportunity to study business firsthand and to provide them with an intensive one-to-one introduction to a business organisation leading to enhanced understanding of the contribution business makes to the economy. HOST Members of Parliament Business Away Days attended by a small cross-party group of parliamentarians. These programmes take a close look at your business and how it contributes to the New Zealand economy and community. SUPPORT the Trust’s education programme of tertiary prizes in politics, public policy and governance at our leading Universities and the Travel Fund programme for school visits to Parliament. BEING INFORMED on Trust activities and events and topical issues through the bi-annual newsletter (issued June and December) in addition to News Alerts and social media posts on our Facebook page and website.

The Trustee Council includes the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and Political Party leaders or their representatives from other political parties represented in Parliament and six Corporate members, who are elected by the Corporate membership. The Trust Board comprising four Corporates and three Parliamentary representatives, drawn from the Trustee Council, exercises the legal functions and obligations of the Trust. The Chairman of the Trust is a Corporate representative. The Trust is managed by a small secretariat based in Parliament. The Trust is totally financed by subscriptions paid by the Corporate members.

SUBSCRIPTION LEVELS ARE AS FOLLOWS $6,000 + GST for organisations with a turnover of over $100 million; $4,000 + GST for organisations with a turnover of below $100 million; SUBSRIPTION RATE APPLICABLE IN THIS CASE

MEMBERSHIP CONDITIONS

We understand :

All applications for membership must be approved by the Trust Board. Membership runs from 1 January to 31 December calendar year. Membership subscriptions are due in January of each calendar year. The company / organisation principal representative is the person in the position of Chief Executive / Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director. The Company / organisation must have the ability to host Business Attachment programmes and an MP’s Business Away Day programme if requested. The company / organisation is entitled to nominate employees or staff representatives to attend the four parliamentary seminars in a calendar year (except in a General Election year when a reduced number of seminars are held). The company / organisation is eligible to attend all events arranged by the Trust in a given calendar year and will receive invitations to these. The company / organisation will receive regular communications through social media and news alerts. The Company / organisation is required to give the Trust six months’ written notice before 1 July in any year of their intention to resign or, alternatively, pay six months’ subscription for the next ensuring year.
