A Message From the Chair Welcome

to the first edition of NYU Stern's Department of Accounting Newsletter. Each edition will include news about our department programs and feature selected faculty members, current students, and recent graduates. Great things have been happening here in both teaching and research, and we wanted to share them with you.

To highlight the diverse interests and talents of our faculty, this edition introduces you to five of our professors: Amal Shehata, Aleksander Aleszczyk, Xiaojing Meng, Julian Yeo, and Stephen Ryan.

Amal Shehata is an outstanding educator who was named one of the “Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professors” by Poets & Quants, and was the recipient of the 2021 NYU Distinguished Teaching Award. She created a new course, Accounting and the Blockchain, which is featured in this newsletter. Aleksander Aleszczyk started his career at Stern in September 2019, after receiving his PhD from the London Business School. An outstanding teacher, he was named one of the “Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professors” by Poets & Quants. Xiaojing Meng joined Stern as an Assistant Professor in 2011 after completing her Ph.D. at Columbia University. She was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with Tenure in 2020. Julian Yeo is the deputy department chair and the 2021 Stern Distinguished Teaching Award recipient. Stephen Ryan holds Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Professorship of Accounting. One of the originators of accounting research on financial institutions and instruments, he is the author of the widely used text on the subject, Financial Instruments, and Institutions: Accounting and Disclosure Rules, (John Wiley & Sons, 2002, 2007).

To feature our programs, Prof. April Klein, Director of Stern’s Ross Institute of Accounting Research, discusses the Institute’s mission and recent activities, and we include a description of our three new courses, Accounting and the Blockchain, Accounting for Sustainability, and Data Management and Analysis.

We also introduce you to some current students and alumni from both our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Finally, we include a tribute to Baruch Lev, who retired last summer. A giant of Accounting research who also significantly influenced practice, Professor Lev joined Stern in 1997 and was a pillar of our department for a quarter-century. We will miss him.

Academic Programs NYU Stern's Department of Accounting designs and provides coursework and opportunities for our students across all academic levels. We aim to maintain the position of our top-notch Ph.D., MBA, and Undergraduate programs. Together, these programs make NYU Stern's Department of Accounting one of the nation's best and most comprehensive programs.

Undergraduate Program

BS/MS in Accounting Program

The Accounting academic degree program at Stern consistently has been ranked among the top ten of the most highly regarded undergraduate programs in the United States. This program provides a comprehensive collection of materials to assist the Stern undergraduate student in selecting course electives for a most effective Accounting major or co-major - one that will best prepare our students for a most successful professional career upon graduation.

The BS/MS in Accounting dual degree program provides students with the opportunity to earn two distinct degrees. Students can apply as early as spring of their first year. The BS degree is typically completed in four years or less at the Stern Undergraduate College. Upon completion, students will transition to the Stern Graduate School to earn an MS Degree in one accelerated summer. In doing so, they will have acquired the 150 credits required to become a licensed CPA in New York State, as well as in most other states.

Feedback from students, alumni, and recruiters suggests that there are, and continues to be, numerous job opportunities for students who major or double major in Accounting and closely related fields such as Finance and Information Systems.

We have subsequently developed curricula options for an Accounting major and co-majors designed to most effectively prepare the Stern undergraduate student for today's professional career marketplace.

Master of Science in Accounting Program The MS in Accounting program is designed for recent college graduates interested in sitting for the CPA exam in New York. Our program is specifically intended to get students CPA-ready in one year. The MS in Accounting program is a 30 credit, one-year full-time program. The curriculum is lockstep and includes a variety of essential accounting courses.

Outside of class, there are a number of ways to meet classmates and develop professionally, including the Orientation and Cohort Leadership Programs.

Typically, 90 to 95% of students receive an offer within three months of graduation, and about half the class are hired by the big four. PreEnrollment Requirements & Admissions help ensure our students meet the CPA exam standards.

With the power of two Stern degrees, our students will join a global network of alumni who enjoy exciting careers in accounting, advisory, consulting, investment banking, and entrepreneurship.

This program allows students to sit for the New York State CPA Exam as early as spring of their senior year.

Ph.D. Program Our Ph.D. students take extensive coursework in economics, finance, econometrics, and statistics in addition to accounting. Students are entitled to take courses at Stern as well as other schools within the University, such as the Arts and Sciences Graduate School of Economics and NYU’s famous Courant Institute of Mathematics. Our objective is to prepare students for faculty positions as researchers and teachers in top academic institutions.

The curriculum is designed to provide a thorough understanding of current accounting theory, practice and research, taught within the framework of modern economic and finance theories as applied to the behavior of today’s corporations and financial markets.

Faculty Spotlight Amal Shehata, CPA

Clinical Associate Professor of Accounting Academic Director, BS/MS Dual Degree CPA Program

– Professor Amal Shehata As the recipient of the 2021 NYU Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2018 Stern Distinguished Teaching Award, and named “Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professors” by Poets & Quants, Professor Amal Shehata is passionate about teaching. Amal joined our accounting department as a full-time faculty member in September 2015, after having been an adjunct professor at the School since 2008. She serves as Academic Director of the BS/ MS Dual Degree CPA Program at Stern. Professor Shehata teaches residential and online courses in Financial Accounting and Auditing in the undergraduate and graduate schools. She has recently created a new course, Accounting and the Blockchain, for which she was awarded the NYU Curricular Development Grant.

Amal began her career in public accounting as an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Washington D.C. During her 11 years at PwC, she worked in several divisions, including Assurance, Internal Firm Services, and the Office of the Vice-Chairman. After leaving PwC, she worked as Director of Sales and Operations for a privately held company. She is a Certified Public Accountant.

An avid Tarheel fan, Amal received her B.S. in Business Administration and her M.S. in Accounting from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She lives close to campus with her husband and fellow Tarheel, Daniel, and their two sons, Tamer and Zane.

ALEKSANDER A. ALESZCZYK JOINS ACCOUNTING FACULTY Aleksander A. Aleszczyk recently joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Accounting.

His research interest lies in the intersection of accounting and corporate finance. In particular, he focuses on debt capital markets, financial institutions, mergers and acquisitions as well as private equity.

Aleksander currently teaches financial accounting. In 2020, Poets & Quants named him one of Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professors. Also, his case study was among the bestselling in finance, accounting and control in The Case Centre in 2018.

Aleksander completed his higher education in the United Kingdom. Prior to joining NYU Stern, he earned his PhD degree from London Business School, where he was awarded with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarship.

He also graduated with an MPhil in Finance from the University of Cambridge and received a BA (Hons) in Economics and Finance, First Class from the University of Exeter.

Communicating and collaborating with business professors. To illustrate, when preparing my PhD dissertation, I persisted and was able to discuss my research findings with over a dozen of C-level executives from S&P 500 firms, banks, and credit rating agencies. These opportunities sharpened my ideas and provided managers with an outsider’s view on their corporate financing policies. Such a dialogue allows us academics to better identify corporate issues that need solutions. The world develops at an incredible pace and collaboration permits to better embrace the change.”

Special Thanks to Pamela Craig (MBA ‘84) Pamela Craig, the benefactor of the Pamela Craig Scholarship, is the chair of the Audit Committee of Merck’s board of directors and a member of the boards of directors at Corning, Progressive Insurance, and 3M. She chairs the Technology Committee at Progressive and serves on the Audit Committees at Corning and 3M. She worked for 34 years at Accenture, spending the last seven years as CFO. Pamela has served on numerous boards and has global experience in the information technology and services industry. She completed awn MS in Accounting and then an MBA at Stern, which she credits for developing critical skills she needed to advance in her career and become a CFO of a large global public company.

The Pamela Craig Scholarship increases access to a Stern education by providing full cost-of-attendance scholarships for students pursuing their MS as part of the Accounting Department’s BS/MS in Accounting program.

Christian Cortes

Sydni decided to pursue the BS/MS program to take part in all the opportunities the program had to provide her.

She has had a chance to network with alumni and fellow students at exclusive BS/MS events and secure internships and a full-time job opportunity with PricewaterhouseCoopers when she graduates. These opportunities would not have been established without the BS/MS program.

Christian decided to pursue the BS/MS program because it represented an opportunity for him. As a first-generation Mexican-American student, being able to graduate first in his family with both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree means everything to him.

He will support his family financially and be a role model for his little brother.

She is currently taking an Audit class this semester, which directly aligns with her full-time job opportunity. Her class is insightful in learning about the foundation of assurance, especially after gaining hands-on experience at her internships.

Everything in her program encompasses her career path and aspirations.

An exciting class Christian is taking this semester is Taxation of Individuals & Business Income.

This class helped him better understand the tax system and help family and friends file their taxes.

Christian has accepted a full-time offer from KPMG as a Transfer Pricing Associate in their tax service.

Michael Chen Michael decided to pursue the BS/MS program because of all the great opportunities and people at NYU Stern and New York City. Whether it was asking professors about course-related questions or going to the academic advisors, the accessibility to resources at Stern has always helped him improve during his time at NYU. The variety of academic and professional opportunities around him was also why he decided to pursue the BS/MS program, as there were always new courses and activities to attend.

Michael is involved in the Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) honors society, where he has been a peer mentor and a member of the community service committee. With BAP, he had attended and helped incoming candidates connect with volunteering activities around NYC, which has been an enriching experience outside of the

classroom. Michael also participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, where they helped individuals and families in NYC file their taxes.

Working with the VITA, he helped others apply what he’d learned in school to real-world scenarios.

Michael took Financial Statement Modeling and Financial Reporting & Analysis. The content of these two classes complemented one another. Both classes allowed him to understand better when reading and analyzing various financial statements in documents such as the 10-k.

Over this past summer, Michael participated in an Audit internship with one of the Big 4 accounting firms. He will be returning for a full-time Auditing position after graduating from the BS/MS program at Stern.

Mark Esquivel

Samuel always loved working with numbers and finding relationships between them.

As a first year student, he learned about the BS/ MS program through the Stern Accounting Society’s meetings. He decided to apply for the program because he wanted to understand the industry deeper and pursue higher education.

Mark decided to pursue the BS/MS program because he knew he wanted to do something related to accounting ever since he was in high school. He decided to choose Stern School of Business as his first choice since NYU Stern had a BS/MS program, and he knew he wanted to be a part of the program.

Samuel is currently a member of the Quantitative Finance Society and the Stern Accounting Society.

He finds both his Financial Reporting and Analysis and Auditing classes enticing. Financial Reporting introduced him to companies’ different methods and techniques to present their financial position.

Auditing has always been an area of interest for him. He hopes to pursue a career in Auditing in the future.

Mark enjoyed taking Tax this semester. He always thought it would be a tedious class because of the many grey areas in tax laws, but he’d enjoyed learning about the topic and new changes. He found how tax laws change constantly and how many businesses are impacted by certain tax advantages/restrictions.

Andrea Chiurillo

Mark has accepted a full-time position at Deloitte at the NYC location after interning with Deloitte since his sophomore summer, and he looks forward to starting after he graduates.

While taking many required courses, Andrea realized financial accounting was the only class she looked forward to attending. As she continued to learn more, Andrea realized the same passion and interest she had always had for using a qualitative perspective to solve problems was right there. She realized the value of having a strong accounting knowledge would allow her to have a better perspective on any challenge or situation she would face in the future.

Currently, Andrea is working part-time as an executive assistant to a CEO of a trading firm. This position helped her see the fundamental importance of time management.

This semester, Andrea took Accounting and the Blockchain with Professor Amal Shehata. She found the course amazing and learned about new and relevant accounting foundations, including new technologies and their business implications.

Andrea accepted a full-time position at Deutsche Bank Wealth Management.

Alumni Highlights Adeyemi Ashiru ‘20 Adeyemi and his family relocated to the USA after completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting. Having majored in finance and accounting for his undergraduate degree, a Master’s in Accounting (MSA) seemed to be the next logical step in his career. The MS in Accounting offered him an opportunity to enhance his accounting and business knowledge further and build on the core knowledge required to obtain his CPA qualification.

NYU Stern played a massive role in helping him land his first job out of the program. There were numerous personalized resources made available to students via The Wasserman Center for Career Development, in addition to the networking events and career fairs students were given the opportunity to attend. The MSA program also prepares students for the recruitment process by offering a compulsory Financial Statement Analysis course in the first month or so of the fall semester. This course is intended to ensure that all MSA students have the appropriate accounting and finance knowledge to be well prepared and succeed during the fall recruiting season.

The best advice he would give to an applicant hoping to get into NYU Stern is to be willing to try new things, always give 100% in everything they do, and never be afraid to ask questions.

David Wertenteil ‘17 David decided to pursue a career in accounting because it opened many opportunities, its usefulness in many sectors of the economy, and its all-encompassing and challenging nature. When deciding to pursue a Master’s in Accounting, there was no question in his mind that it was going to be at NYU Stern. Aside from our legendary reputation, the special attention that is accorded to the academic, social, and career interests of the students in the MS in Accounting program is unparalleled.

One fascinating class that David took at NYU Stern was Forensic Accounting and Financial Statement Fraud, the analysis of a series of financial scandals which have had devastating effects on the entire business world. This class was riveting and challenging since it required the application of a culmination of accounting knowledge and skills acquired from other classes to dissect financial statements and determine what the auditors overlooked that would have alerted them to fraud. Moreover, they were fortunate to have a Harvard professor who wrote one of the cases they’ve studied as a guest lecturer and a former CFO of the company.

David currently works for Ernst & Young’s New York Metro State and Local Tax practice specializing in Indirect Taxes. His experience primarily consists of providing sales and use tax advisory services to many prominent companies spanning various industries. After graduation, he worked at another Big 4 accounting firm and served as an adjunct in Columbia University’s enterprise risk management program.

Some of Our Faculty Professor Xiaojing Meng Xiaojing Meng joined the NYU Stern faculty as an assistant professor in accounting in 2011 after completing a Ph.D. in accounting at Columbia Business School. In 2020, Xiaojing was promoted to the Associate Professor in Accounting with tenure.

Xiaojing’s research develops analytical models that examine strategic information choices made by economic entities in corporate governance and capital market settings. Xiaojing’s research approach reflects her strong belief of what makes analytical accounting research useful: a creative application of economic theory in accounting settings deepens our understanding of the fundamental forces that underlie intricate phenomena. The insights are often subtle and surprising, thus have the potential to change how we think about current practice. Her work has been published in leading academic journals such as Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, The Accounting Review, and Review of Accounting Studies.

At Stern, Xiaojing has taught “Principles of Financial Accounting” to both Stern and Non-stern undergraduate students. Whereas her research hinges on abstract analytical models, in the classroom she draws from concrete examples. Xiaojing also takes advantage of her research capacity and introduces relevant research findings to students.

This helps the students develop high-level thinking to perceive economic forces behind the current institution of accounting.

In her free time, Xiaojing likes to read, travel, and watch movies.

Professor Julian Yeo, Ph.D. Professor Julian Yeo is the 2021 Stern Distinguished Teaching Award recipient.

He is a Clinical Associate Professor and the deputy chair of Accounting.

Professor Yeo teaches Accounting-Based Valuation, Modeling Financial Statements, Financial Statement Analysis, Financial Accounting and Reporting and Managerial Accounting. He joined NYU Stern as an Adjunct in 2011 with various teaching awards and accolades, including being named one of the 12 Favorite Professors teaching in Executive MBA Programs by The Wall Street Journal.

Professor Stephen Ryan Stephen G. Ryan is the Vincent C. Ross Professor of Accounting at New York University Stern School of Business. Professor Ryan teaches Accounting for Financial Instruments in the MS in Accounting program as well as in the doctoral program.

His primary research areas include accounting measurement, accounting-based valuation and risk assessment, and financial reporting by financial institutions and for financial instruments. He has two papers forthcoming in the Journal of Accounting Research, One of them is: Neilson, J., S. Ryan, K. Wang, and B. Course Description

Course Description

The practice of accounting is fundamentally tied to data and our ability to analyze them. Whether the data reside in spreadsheets, databases, text documents, or public websites, we can use them to gain valuable insights into the financial performance of a business.

You may also hear popular terms like data science, big data, and advanced analytics and wonder what they mean for a career in industry or professional services. This course provides concepts and tools for making sense of data and performing data analysis.

This course will cover the many dimensions of the accounting industry that will be impacted by blockchain technology. We begin with the history of the existing financial reporting framework and an overview of how blockchain technology functions, exploring why and how Accounting processes are open to disruption and improvement from the blockchain. We then spend subsequent class periods examining specific areas, including financial reporting, auditing, tax services, the regulatory framework (or lack thereof to date), the criticisms and limitations of blockchain, and more.

Accounting for Sustainability - Measuring and Disclosing, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Data Taught by Massimiliano Bonacchi Course Description The main objective of the course is to equip you with the knowledge required for understanding how to measure, evaluate and disclose ESG performance. For this reason, the course will emphasize the interplay between sustainability strategy, organizational architecture, and performance, providing the practical knowledge and insights for embedding sustainability into the corporate DNA as a daily practice (internal perspective); assessing ESG performance (external perspective).

Farewell, Professor Baruch Lev! Baruch Lev was the Philip Bardes Professor of Accounting

and Finance at New York University Stern School of Business. Professor Lev taught courses in accounting, financial analysis and investor relations.

Before joining NYU, Professor Lev held professorial positions at the University of Chicago, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University where he was dean of the business school and University of California at Berkeley (jointly appointed by the business and law schools).

Professor Lev received his Bachelor of Accounting degree from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, his Master of Business Administration and his doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago.

Professor Lev had been with NYU for over 20 years.

His primary research areas of interest included financial statement and investment analyses; intangible assets/ intellectual capital; management and valuation; capital markets; and mergers and acquisitions.

The Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research The Vincent C. Ross Institute of accounting research is the oldest continuous research center at the Stern School of Business. Led by April Klein, KPMG Faculty Fellow and Professor of Accounting, the Ross fosters an environment where research flourishes, and where executives, accounting professionals, government regulators, and academics work together to explore cutting edge topics in accounting, sustainability and finance.

The Ross focuses on initiatives across education, research, and engagement.

This academic year, the Ross is celebrating both its golden anniversary of being established, as well as the centennial of its benefactor, Vincent C. Ross’s, graduation from the (then) NYU School of Commerce. Part of this celebration included the launch of its new website at the end of October 2021.
