V.P. Biden visits NYU, praises Obama

By Tatiana Baez Education comes at a cost, and that cost may rise even higher by the end of the year. Though the current 3.4 percent interest rate on Stafford student loans is expected to double in July, New York Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is co-sponsoring an upcoming bill from Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) to prevent the increased accrual rates. This increase is estimated to affect 7.4 million borrowers nationwide. “The thought of this burden growing is like nails on a chalkboard,” Schumer said at a press conference earlier this week. Lawrence White, an economics professor at the Stern School of Business, said he also believes the interest rate in student loans should not be increased. “[The increase] should be applied to new loans as they are granted and not to existing loans,” White said.

‘Veep’ star discusses venture into TV comedy By Jeremy Grossman

It is no easy task for an actor to hold his own against a comedic legend like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, but Timothy Simons does just that on HBO’s new series, “Veep.” The show stars the “Seinfeld” veteran as the stressed-out, foulmouthed U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer. Simons plays White House liaison Jonah Ryan, who feels entitled to boss around the vice president and her cabinet. “To play a character that has absolutely no shame in what he says or does is a really fun thing,” Simons said, who described his character’s main intention as aggravating the V.P. as much as possible.

His address focused on the success of the Obama administration’s foreign policy and laid out future foreign policy plans while drawing a sharp contrast between Obama’s policies and the proposed policies of Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Zachary B. Taylor, president of the NYU College Democrats and a CAS senior, said Biden was formally invited as a guestspeaker when the Obama-Biden campaign reached out to the club last week. According to the campaign, NYU was chosen be-

cause of its national status as a premier academic institution. “It’s been a crazy week,” Taylor said. “Everything happened in a very short time. Our conversations happened in the space of a

Graduate student works to spread LOVE, empower Latina youth By Esha Ray

While working with Life is Precious, a suicide-prevention program directed toward young Latinas in New York City, Wagner second-year graduate student Claudia Espinosa realized that she wanted to do something more to help young Latinas not only avoid suicide but continue to succeed. According to research from the National Women’s Law Center, young Latina women have one of the highest school dropout rates — exceeding AfricanAmerican and Asian-American adolescents — as well as the highest rates of teen pregnancy. “This all happens among young Latinas,” Espinosa said. “So I decided to create a program on my own

that would help the community.” In collaboration with the Latino Studies program, the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs at NYU and the Teaching and Learning program in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, her program Latinas On the Verge of Excellence works to provide support and education to young Latinas in the city. The girls in the program are middle and high school students who currently meet every Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at NYU. There, they work one-on-one and in groups with their NYU student mentors in a variety of subjects. The program also hosts presentations from guest speakers to talk about different career paths, representing diverse

options from the arts to health care. Though the program was initially conceived last October, LOVE was officially initiated this spring. Espinosa said she has already seen much enthusiasm from the girls. “It’s up to them to come to us,” Espinosa said. “You can see that they really want to be a part of the program. You can see the motivation.” Some of the older girls come to the program to receive guidance on how to apply for college and receive financial aid. “I hope the mentees, in being exposed to Katinas that have gone on to college, see that these colleges are actually accessible to them,” NYU’s Latino Studies
