It's hard to believe that summer is just around the corner, but here we are! I've enjoyed seeing our NYSEF staff and athletes take the opportunity to relax and enjoy time both away and at home with family and friends Although the snow on the mountains has melted and the school year is wrapping up, things have still been abuzz in the NYSEF community
On May 13th we hosted our second Annual Bike and Gear Swap at the Wilmington Town Beach along with BETA, SLICK, LPOC, High Peaks Cyclery, BikeADK, and the Hardy Road Kids. We had an excellent turnout and beautiful weather, and lots of folks went home with " new " gear! During the previous week, a few of us traveled to Park City, Utah to attend the 2023 U S Ski and Snowboard Annual Congress where NYSEF received Club of the Year for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined, as well as the Paul Bacon Award for Event Organization
As we look forward to the summer months, we'll continue to roll out registration for summer dryland and on-snow camps, so stay tuned. Our office staff is hard at work planning our Summer Golf Tournament and Annual Summer Benefit - be sure to pencil us in on your calendars, you won't want to miss these fun summer events
Don't forget your sunblock!

On May 18th 2023, USA Nordic Sport (USANS) nominated 31 American athletes to its 2023-24 National and Junior National Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping Teams, including Lake Placid natives and New York Ski Educational Foundation members Kai McKinnon and Tate Frantz.
McKinnon, 15, a NYSEF Winter Term Nordic Combined athlete, was named to the 2023/24 Nordic Combined Junior National Team. Frantz, 18, is a former NYSEF athlete who now trains in Norway and was named to the 2023-24 Ski Jumping Junior National Team.
These athletes achieved the nominations based on selection criteria designated by USANS
They will have the option of being part of the 2023-24 U.S. Nordic Combined or U.S. Ski Jumping Team.
“It has been incredible following Tate’s success after working with him through his formative years as a Nordic athlete at NYSEF,” said Colin Delaney, NYSEF’s Head Ski Jumping Coach. “Watching him compete in his first World Cup start on his home hill this past winter was icing on the cake, followed up with naming to the World Championship team this past season He is right on the heels of the national team athletes, and I am excited to see what this season brings.”
The nominations were made after the conclusion of the 2022-23 competition season, and athletes will have the option of accepting nominations prior to the 2023-24 season The final teams for the season will be named this coming fall.
“It is equally exciting to see Kai’s hard work recognized after a long and successful season, ” he added.”We will be working hard to continue this trend in the year ahead ”
NYSEF’s Director of Winter Term Beatty Schlueter said the collaboration between NYSEF, Kai’s family, and Lake Placid High School created a strong foundation for Kai and set her up for success.
“This nomination to the junior team is a true reflection of the path Kai has been paving for herself for a few years now, ” said NYSEF Winter Term Director Beatty Schlueter “She has big goals and the work ethic to achieve them. We can’t wait to see what the future brings for her!”
“I am excited for the upcoming year, and we are looking forward to building off of the success from last season, ” said USA Nordic Sport CEO, Adam Provost “We have a great group of athletes on both Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping and believe that we will be very competitive this season. ”
U.S. Ski & Snowboard named the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) the 2023 Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Club of the Year at its award ceremony on May 17, 2023, in Park City, Utah.
The Club of the Year award is presented to the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Competition Club in each sport which has distinguished itself in providing direction to young athletes through high-level competition programs resulting in athletic success
“NYSEF is at an exciting time in our Nordic programming,” said John Norton, NYSEF’s Executive Director. “Thanks to the Olympic Regional Development Authority’s major investments in the Olympic Jumping Complex and Mt Van Hoevenberg’s Nordic facility in Lake Placid, our athletes have access to world-class venues to train on every day.”
U S Ski & Snowboard noted that NYSEF athletes of all ages had a successful year, walking away with several podiums in ski jumping and Nordic combined. To cap off a successful season, a NYSEF Nordic combined athlete won a medal at the World University Games. Additionally, two athletes, Kai McKinnon and Tate Frantz were named to the USA Nordic Junior National Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping Teams
“Our athletes had an incredible season, and Kai and Tate’s nominations to the Junior National teams was icing on the cake,” said Head Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Coach Colin Delaney “We’re so honored that U S Ski & Snowboard recognized the hard work and dedication of our club with this award.”
NYSEF also received the Paul Bacon Award for the second year in a row This award is presented to an individual or group for the most significant contribution to U.S. Ski & Snowboard in the field of competition organization in the past season.
The Paul Bacon Award for event organization recognized NYSEF for the wide array of events the club produced during the 2022-23 ski season, including the FISU World University Games and the NCAA Ski Championships. This is the fifth time NYSEF has received this award
“Thanks to the tireless dedication of our staff, coaches, and volunteers to make each event a success, ” Norton added.
While most winter sports athletes spend their spring relaxing, taking a break from their sport, and vacationing at the beach, many of NYSEF's Winter Term athletes have continued to work hard toward reaching their on-snow goals.
During the second to last week in May, head men ’ s FIS coach Seppi Steigler and alpine athletes Denny S., Gavin Ebert, and Charlie Howe traveled to Colorado to participate in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Eastern Region GS project. Seppi was named to the regional staff for the event, while the boys progressed through GS training in some amazing conditions at both Loveland and A-basin!
The following week, Winter Term's Paul Fogarty and Thomas Reynolds participated in the U16 version of the same GS Eastern Regional Project in Loveland, where conditions remained great for spring skiing! U16 teammate Luke Salibello was also on snow in Mammoth at the American Downhiller Camp! These athletes' hard work and dedication this spring will put them one step ahead of the competition this fall!
