Cultural Activities to Enjoy Are Everywhere!

Festival Fringe and around the world! They have released 20 albums with “Hearth and Homeland” being the most recent and are constantly adding new material to their shows. One of their previous albums, “The Fire and the Passion of Scotland, was “Album of the Year” at Celtic Radio in the U.S., North Sea Gas is on an East Coast tour now and appeared this month in Putnam Valley’s Tomkins Corners Cultural Center. So the weekend is here and you are wondering what’s there to do. Finding interesting and unique activities is easy if you know where to look. Start by reading notices in the Pennysaver, local newspapers, library postings, church bulletins and civic organizations bulletins or websites. Often organizations host fundraisers that provide entertainment with admission a “free will donation” or a modest fee. One such event happened recently when my cousin Marianne invited me to hear a band, North Sea Gas, one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands with great vocal and tremendous three part harmonies. The group is comprised of Dave Gilfillan, Ronnie MacDonald and Grant Simpson that play guitars, fiddle, bouzouki, harmonic, whistles, bodhrans (drums) and banjo with their humor added in. With the extreme popularity of the award winning TV series, Outlander, Scottish music seems to be in and this group offers listeners a taste of folk music of days gone by.

They have received Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and regularly have sold out shows at the Edinburgh

Libraries There are often interesting lectures, guest appearances and book clubs taking place at most libraries throughout the year. Last weekend we attended an artist’s reception at the John C. Hart Library, in Shrub Oak entitled by Joann Zwolski. Over 35 delicate and exquisite watercolors were on display in the community room with light refreshments served to the guests that came to view the exhibit. Just a few weeks earlier this same library had a festive arts and crafts event for children and families.

Hall Rockettes were there to meet and greet the families! The Rockettes took photos with the families, which were instantly printed and farmed inside a snow globe. The Rockettes even joined the children in decorating their snow globes to create a memorable keepsake. Now how many people can say they met real live New York City Rockettes in person?

Holidays Coming Remember that the holidays are on the way and that means an array of holiday concerts.

Many churches offer wonderful musical entertainment open to the public as well as their congregation. The same goes for local high school bands with their chorus, orchestra or brass bands playing for the public on weekends with mini concerts. Most of these events are free and a wonderful way to encourage these budding talents performing before a live audience. Find something you want to attend, invite a friend and take advantage of the cultural opportunities in your own back yard!
