Thinking about Summer Camp Options

By Evelyn J. Mocbeichel Looking for a camp might now be a last minute decision because perhaps travel plans have been cancelled, yet you want your child to have a fun summer experience. It is time for children to get away from coach potato activities like TV watching or computer games. Playing with friends and enjoying the fresh air of summer with rigorous play and exercise is a healthy way for children to develop and learn. What kind of camp should parents select? Older children usually have their own ideas as to what type of camp they are interested in attending. Parents of preschool children should be more select when choosing a program for their little ones. This is usually

child and there are many aspects of safety and program content the parent should look into. Following the New York State licensing

guidelines, the following suggestions should be kept in mind.

HEALTH/SAFETY Young children need extra attention while outdoors. What are the rules for supervision outdoors and what is the condition of the play equipment and is it fenced in? Parents of preschoolers might prefer a program that offers “sprinkle time”, rather than pool or lake activities. All camps require the child have a medical examination before enrollment. Have your physician list restrictions or allergies.

Snacks at camp can vary, so tell the director of any allergies. Is there a registered nurse or doctor on the premises or on call? How many

It is simply that the solution to most problems is usually hidden in plain sight. Our myopia, as we search for solutions, is .-,+*)-(' -&%$'%+#$%."(%-!+ +(* -" ."-.' -+ " - ( "- $* You know, when looking for that snack or the milk to go with it we open the refrigerator and simultaneously call out to our spouse, “Honey, where’s the milk?” In almost that precise moment, especially if we’ve spied it on the shelf where it usually resides, we gulp our words, hoping that the rush of air and liquids headed for the stomach will suck them in too, as though they had never been spoken.

The answer, all too often, is the graphic phrase that a mental picture of things in the “fridge” usually forms. That is, when we give ourselves over to the simple work of forming that picture [before] asking for help.
