Movie Classics Memories

my dad’s favorites that he and I watched.

Musicals: Yankee Doodle Dandy, starring James Cagney; Singing in the Rain or any 1940s film with tap dancing and featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly.

Action Films: Two true war stories; To Hell and Back, starring Audie Murphy, whose life story the film is about; or The Five Sullivans, who were five brothers serving on the same ship during WWII. The ship went down in battle and all five brothers were lost. From that incident, the “Sullivan Law” was passed which stated that no siblings were allowed to serve on the same vessel.

No movie list would be complete for my dad without the inclusion of several horror films.

Watch for them on TV or see if your library stocks these classics. The original Dracula with Bela Lugosi; Frankenstein or The Mummy starring Boris Karloff; or The Werewolf series with actor and makeup artist Lon Chaney, Jr.,

While riding in the car recently, a series of old songs from the 1940s came on which brought me to a nostalgic place in time. The songs prompted me to think of the old movies my dad used to introduce me to when I was a little girl. They were on television in the late 50s and 60s and were in black and white, yet the dancing, singing, mystery or scary themes were as effective as any color film of the day.

Today these films are featured on Turner Movie Classics (TMC) and are available to be enjoyed by this generation. Make note, too, that the heroes in these films were real and not the “super-human” genre of many of the current films now being produced.

If you are stuck inside during the winter, try to watch some of these with your young students or even your high schooler to learn what real storylines and themes were about.

The Single Greatest Mistake a Manager Can Make…

By Frank J. Rich In his book, Swim With The Sharks, Harvey Mackay delivers what he calls “A Short Course in Management.” It is short; in fact, only four pages long. He probably could have reduced it to a sentence or two if he tried. Allow me.

In describing the “single greatest mistake a manager can make,” Mackay suggests that managers must provide an environment that includes: motivation, goals, resources, and leadership. But not “restrictions!” We could focus on the now “famous four,” but to demur on the last point may be instructive. People, especially Americans, do not like being told what to do. They don’t like rules. Oh, they’ll abide by them, but the opportunity in the resource is best encouraged by the freedom to express oneself uniquely. After all, it’s the way the creator made us, isn’t it?

We know this to be the case about Americans. Our cowboy history confirms it; our enemies learned it the hard way. Even the great raconteur, artist, writer and philosopher ToulouseLautrec discovered this in us; committed to a tour of the United States he was convinced of two things: the inconsistency of Americans and their uncanny ability to accomplish great things. He concluded that Americans were uniquely qualified to join in a common cause that produced great results.

Nazi Germany and its Axis partner Japan learned the same thing. In studying America, they saw a nation of desultory energy, casting about by its tolerance of free expression in a sea of competing ideas. They envisioned a messy society that was “weak, vulnerable, and uncommitted to any sustained

effort.” Both would have done well to visit the U.S. to witness first-hand its true uniqueness — the ability of Americans of every persuasion and background to come together when given reason. We know… the rest of the story. It has happened — again and again — from the recovery of the semiconductor memory business from the effects of Japan, Inc., to the coalescing spirit that made Americans one again after the attacks of 9/11. In a 1960s painting I first eyed in a doctor’s office, entitled “America,” the artist represented this nation with handprints of yellow, white, black, and red. Above he wrote: “Many People, Different Lands, One Nation, America.” I think that says it all. (Perhaps, one of you will find the artist responsible for this painting, and let me know).

At a seminar featuring Henry Gardiner Symonds, one-time chairman of Tenneco, the automotive products company, Mackay remembers vividly how simply well Symonds summed up the way to build a successful business. He said that managers must do four things: find the capital, create a favorable environment in which to employ it, and hire the key people. He took a long pause after this, then continued: “Know when to get the hell out of the way.”

He added that this last tenet was the hardest, but the one that would make you rich and successful. When all the pieces are in place, especially key people, it is important to let them do what they do.

Isn’t it interesting how the simplest understanding can lead to great success? I did not succeed at making four pages into two sentences; I guess I just enjoy talking about this stuff.
