By Frank J. Rich We are never so near to something as when it affects our consciousness. The term “consciousness” opens volumes in science and philosophy, but may singularly account for the uniqueness in the human condition more than anything else. To the point, we feel most things if given over to the mechanism, and even when we are not the objective machine we like to make out.

The senses, it turns out, account for the thing inside that relates to all other things outside. Our relationship to the world and its “things” may, indeed, require a physical presence. Hold the thought for a moment while we consider the marketplace, the focus of ROI columns.

In the past I’ve made much of the idea that “relationship” is fundamental to the human condition. And that it is formed of emotional workings, not at all the objective whir of an automaton. We may form them through the telephone, Internet, email, text messaging, TV, radio, and not least, print.

It is this last media that provides the greatest feel. Do we really get the feel of a book in hefting our Kindle or iPad? Make no mistake, we do judge a book by its cover, and despite the trend to e-reading there is no substitute for the relationships that obtain from the analog senses that direct us. A physical presence is not only necessary to extend our sense of belonging to each other and our things; it is, in fact, fundamental to the human condition.

Despite its fascination with all things digital, the marketplace is demonstrating the learning that was already in the can; namely, that our senses make all things real and more palatable. This is no less the case for shoppers, who are now stacking lines after several years’ hiatus to take home the pleasure in things in exchange for their savings or healthy income. And while they are buying more on the Internet, it is a paltry sum compared to what they walk out of stores with—a 1:20 ratio.

A quick review of what major brands are doing makes the point. Dick’s Sporting Goods is outperforming the competition by its increasing number of stores across the land. Why? Because as the title suggests, we buy what we

see … and touch, and feel, and smell, and hear. In other words What You See You Buy (WUCUB).

Amazon.com may be the biggest store in the world, but it too will be sprouting local stores “en masse” in the new year—same reason, same result.

Home Depot reports that 40 percent of all purchases are picked up at the store; and they’re loving it. Why? Because WUCUB. And when we go to Home Depot we are that much closer to the things we need (light bulbs of every variety), and to the things we want (a new tool for dad).

Restoration Hardware, a high-end “Home Goods” is doing the same, expanding stores and doing very well at it. Spokespersons explain that shoppers are better customers when they see and touch the goods.
