Keep Them Coming Back

Rich Albert Einstein liked to encourage others in the notion that he “… was not so smart as willing to stay with problems longer.” The idea is prophetic in a market that remains cautious though better endowed than in the recent past. In short, consumers have more money to spend, but are cautious about spending it.

It’s one part the foreboding of unemployed neighbors and one part the habit forged during The Great Recession that drove savings to new highs and spending to new lows.

It’s a habit that Americans are finding hard to break.

Still, there are many who are spending more freely, and most want to. That may be the clearest definition of potential we’ve seen in a long time. Witness the good fortune of the auto and home improvement industries.

Contractors take note: housing starts and home prices are up and down, but homeowners are having repairs and improvements done after a long hiatus. The real question is how can retailers find consumers who spend?

The answer lies not in whether consumers will spend, but on what and under which circumstances.

• Americans love a deal.

• Consumers want to feel special for having spent their money with you.

• “Go-to” places simplify lives, and consumers definitely want that. They just don’t know how to get it in a way that preserves their penchant for “things” and their quirkiness.

• Box stores and brands are working the consumer by making them offers they can’t refuse. Do the same, and believe that you can compete.

What to do

More simply done than imagined, the effort in reaching out to customers (what sellers must do in the multimedia world of commerce) requires imagination and dedication to action.

• Think “relationship,” then begin to build one with

each of your customers. When you meet one ask for their email or cell phone number so you can “alert” them (not “send”) to new products, services, and opportunities to save money on the things they value.

Give them an example of your thinking. For instance, “… we have a semi-annual sale that reduces prices on everything by 50-75%. We even order more stock to increase your selection. It’s a 3-day sale you may not want to miss.” Just look at Lands’ End’s recent “50% OFF your entire order” offer. Keep asking for ways to reach customers when they return. And give them something to encourage it.

• Give customers a reason to return. It’s the holy grail of a retention revenue model. You can’t grow much until the customer presents himself. Don’t be fooled by the Internet commerce hype; very few companies achieve more than a few percentage points of their revenues from the 6.5% of retail sales that are made over the Internet. Give the customer a reason to return “every time” you have contact with him/her. You’ll be awash in “thank yous.”

• Use clever enticements to attract attention to your value offers.

• Continuous communications are vital to the relationships necessary to growth. It is this (relationships) and a good customer experience that contribute most to the growth you desire.

The more consistent your efforts on behalf of the customer, the greater your growth potential. Grow something in common with Dr. Einstein; stay with the problem and watch it turn into opportunity again and again.
