Biographical Films About Artists

By Evelyn J. Mocbeichel While we enjoy a whole gamut of film topics, the most informative and interesting seem to be documentaries or biographical movies about famous people. Whether it is a political or historical figure, celebrities, inventors or great artists, these films often depict a side of the person that is less known besides their contributions that made them famous. We have seen many movies that centered on artists and their works and many are available at the library, on television cable services or the older ones may be shown on regular channels. In no particular order, here are some that our family has enjoyed over the years. Maudie was made in 2016 and starred Sally Hawkins (star of The Shape of Water) and Ethan Hawke. It was a co-production of Ireland and Canada and is about the life of folk artist Maud Lewis, who painted in Nova Scotia. Maud struggles with arthritis, had a sorrowful childhood and lonesome life. After her parents die her older brother leaves grown sister, Maudie, with an elderly aunt that is kind, yet treats her like a child.

One day Maudie answers a help wanted notice posted in a general store. She becomes a housekeeper for a somewhat demanding, mean fish monger, played by

Ethan Hawke, in his dilapidated cottage.

Their turbulent relationship evolves and Maudie gains fame through her art is the basis for this moving true story. Girl with the Pearl Earring is the story of the young woman that posed for Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer’s famous oil painting of the same name.

The painting is a profile of a girl wearing a headscarf and pearl earring. The young peasant girl was working in Vermeer’s house as a maid and became his talented assistant and the model for this famous work. The film stars the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth and Tom Wilkinson and was nominated for three Oscars. Big Eyes is the film about the artist that does the paintings where all the children have huge, almost cartoonish eyes. Produced in 2014 it is a drama about painter Margaret Keane and her phenomenal success back in the 1950’s. The film is about the legal problems she had in the 1960’s when her deceitful and conniving second husband claimed he did the paintings and not his wife. She had let him control her finances, marketing and publicity and was unaware of what his intentions were regarding stealing her fortune. The stars are Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz and Danny Huston. Tim’s Vermeer is a film we saw at the 2013 Hampton International Film Festival

(HIFF). It was nominated in 2014 for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for best documentary. The film follows inventor Tim Jenison who seeks to understand the painting technique used by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer and tries to copy one of his paintings, stroke by stroke, coming up with an absolutely amazing reproduction showing Jenison’s astounding talents. “For reasons he cannot quite explain, Mr. Jenison hit upon a technological sleight of hand, using optical gadgetry that has been available for centuries, that he believed could have aided the work of the old master painters such as Vermeer, a 17th-century Dutchman with a startling talent for photorealistic work. Finding no literature that he felt proved or disproved his thesis, Mr. Jenison determined he had only one course of action and that was to use his discoveries to recreate a Vermeer work, despite his lack of painting experience.” Written by Penn Jillette, Teller (Pen and Teller), directed by Teller the film stars Tim Jenison, Penn Jillette and Martin Mull. This was a fascinating documentary and one of the best films we saw that year at the festival.

Just Two Things

By Frank J. Rich Intuition may be more vital to business enterprise than the data that gathers around it. A bold statement, but one supported by both experience and science. Many have found the way through obscure markets by the light of intuition. When the darkness seems most impenetrable, when we can’t seem to form the logic that clears the way, we are forced to rely on it. Lee Iacocca saw a hidden market for a car that carried families and made women feel safer behind the wheel. Only Toyota’s Sienna had the early look of it, but most did not see the minivan coming.

Intuition may be a social chit, but the science in it is called the adaptive unconscious, an innate sense that something different about what everyone sees is there, uniquely viewed by a few. Lee Iacocca had it; Bill Gates too, who dispelled the myth that few would want a computer of their own. Steve Jobs had it when he pronounced the Apple “the computer for the rest of us,” then demonstrated that computer users would go wild over innovative design when other manufacturers were focused on standards and low-price PCs. The “Oracle of Omaha” Warren Buffet may be glimpsing the same as he bets heavily on rail transportation when others see little opportunity in it. Clearly, Americans are still attached to their cars, and trucks deliver most products to market.

In fact, we all have it on some level. It’s what makes us creative and quirky individuals, those who put aside the conventional wisdom and the mythmakers in favor of an unusual and often unique view of things. Seeing through things, around corners, under the cover of the obvious — these are the characteristics of the entrepreneur, who relies on intuition and data interpretation to set organizations for the future. As former American Airlines CEO Robert Crandall offered, “Intuition in the absence of analysis is another word for stupidity, but good intuition and good data analysis is a recipe for success.” His record of achievement qualifies the view. Crandall is credited with launching the first frequent flyer program, the industry’s first yield-management system, and deep-discount airline tickets, all of which are still with us today.

For those of you who are still with us after a period of

economic malaise and have managed to steel yourselves by force of will and intuition for the economic recovery that has formed, take heart. You have done what is required to soar in the bull market by the investment you made in the future when the future was a dim view to most.

The Gut

The feeling that reveals essential elements that most don’t see is often called a “gut feeling.” It is the stuff that legends are made of. Perhaps most notable is Babe Ruth’s reputed pointing to center field in the 3rd game of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. After two strikes, Ruth raised the level of banter between him and the taunting Cubs dugout by showing two fingers, then pointed in the direction of center field. He hit the next pitch a towering 440 feet right there. Few would argue that the “Sultan of Swat” was not capable of such planned performance, though an objective view still harbors questions.

Richard Nixon may have seen the commercial giant in China that few before him would allow. Frank Borman saw the earth from a unique perch as an astronaut and later as CEO of Eastern Airlines, which created the business shuttle industry segment between corridor cities.
