Locating Important Papers

A few weeks ago I wrote about collecting papers for tax season.

A friend that read the column remarked, “My husband handles all of that stuff and all things financial.” I feel it is still important for both partners to know where vital papers are. Do you know where records are kept, what companies you use for utility services and how much money it takes to operate your home each month? In many households one partner handles the budget and financial obligations and the other partner takes on other areas of the relationship.

Whether it is by mutual understanding or just a matter of being stronger in a certain duty, it is vital that both partners know all that is involved. There may be a time, through a serious illness, an unexpected death of a partner or the separation through divorce or a parting of ways that

one is left to take care of these matters. There is nothing worse than coping with an emotional situation and then having to decipher financial areas that one never touched before.

Files

Both partners should know where all household papers are kept. Vital records like birth and marriage certificates, home mortgage or deed, wills, car titles, passports and insurance policies should be stored in a safe place. This could be a bank safe deposit box or a fireproof box at home. If kept in a bank deposit box, each partner should know the bank’s name and where the key to the box is kept. Make a record of when deposit box fees are paid and when they become due. Mortgage papers are important as are any insurance

policies that pay the mortgage loan off in case of the death of one partner. While it was the vogue many years ago to buy one of these policies at the time the mortgage was purchased, some experts feel that purchasing term life insurance may be less expensive. If you want this coverage, ask your accountant or financial expert which is best for your situation. If one spouse is a stay-at-home parent and not capable of earning enough money to make mortgage payments, you might want to look into this policy. This is especially important if there are no other large life insurance policies to pay the mortgage. For instance, a parent with young children may not be able to return to work and earn enough money for childcare and the cost of operating a household. These are serious topics to be covered before they are needed.

The Big Short

By Frank J. Rich The popular movie by this title tickles our curiosity over the arcane and distant workings of Wall Street, and reveals the frightening underbelly of the American institution called “The Market.”

Though the revelation above is scary in itself, and insight into a secret world — not even perspicacious insiders looked beyond the obvious (“… the housing market is rock solid and its failure without precedence) — it exposed the veil of opportunity (The Market) to a deeper and more widespread code: the fraudulent lining of American Society.

The gist of this gripping tale, America’s story, is the pervasive “blind eye” that it (America) turned in this impending crisis, and similarly toward so many more “crises”— failed education, disingenuous and self-serving politics, price gouging (in the name of demand and supply), and the nation’s declining sense of neighborhood and moral footing, to list a few.

In the human struggle against poverty, ignorance, general welfare, disease and healthcare lay the economic underpinnings of societies. When driven by the ease or purpose that seeks advantage, all of the above is an uncertain balance. We are not so much the creators of our world as the force behind the nimblest of all, who run faster and farther than others until they too find themselves in the same place. This is the folly in the pursuit of “more is better.” The “better” (real value) is a standard of excellence that measures contribution to others as greater than personal gain.

The film illuminates the creative nature in the human spirit, its desire for accomplishment, and the energy necessary to achievement — all good things. It also characterizes the opportunism in us, the “win at any cost” game that is too often at root in high stakes bets, and the deceit that grows naturally from fertile “green” soil. The color of money is an inveigling sort. In the end, we count avarice, creative advantage, deceitfulness, and the incredulous turning from reality by habit and personal gain.

In the explanation of Michael Burry’s perspicacity and verve, a preoccupation with the ways of the market uniquely made, was there interest in finding a solution, the

blocking and tackling of the rolling ball that would accumulate to disaster, or the real culprit in this story — the egregious licensing of partners in the rhetoric that exchanges bad for good, turning the hope of home ownership for every American into a dangerous game of pitch and toss, where the winners joined the losers in the end. The housing market crashed, costing over $4 trillion in equity losses, but not before masking the government programs, political initiatives, and corrupted leveraged models of banking that escaped the scrutiny necessary to fix the problem before it crippled the world, sending virtually every modern nation into economic turmoil. Bad monetary and credit policies from the Federal Reserve and the federal government, though the root of the crash, were hardly at issue as the world scurried to make survival decisions.

Even in the midst of discovery, incredulous over the bank’s unwillingness to see and act on the facts of the matter, profiteers chose to bet heavily in “Credit Default Swaps,” an insurance instrument that warrantied hundreds of billions of subprime mortagage-backed securities, already covered by insurance against default, to reinsure against major losses in a housing market that had never been anything but “solid as a rock.” Disinterest, denial, defensiveness, and ultimate destruction struck the market like Katrina rising above the shores of Louisiana. So distracted by the magnitude of this tsunami that a government program was fashioned to ease concern over the health of companies deemed “too big to fail” and an economy seen as too powerful to trip on itself. Large banks, investment houses, rating agencies and regulators, all working together, surfed the boom to the highest crest possible, delaying the correction until the last possible moment. The bigger they are the harder they fall.

And, they fell … hard!

In summary, we the people, those saddled with the cost of the Great Recession and recovery, may see with new eyes the awesome responsibility to speak plainly about initiatives, leaders, and institutions we depend on to represent the best thinking and collective heart of people everywhere. In the end the wisdom of the crowd must rise above pluralism and elitism to prepare a “better” future for all.
