Sprinkle in onion or garlic powder for taste. Opt for less bread and add more onions, celery, or vegetables when making stuffing, or use fruits like dried cranberries or apples to make a lower calorie version. When making gravy or sauces, use low-fat buttermilk or low-sodium chicken stock in place of cream or whole milk. You’ll achieve a creamy consistency and loads of flavor, minus the unnecessary fat and calories. Avoid packaged, processed foods that contain high salt contents. Go with

When thinking about meal preparations, remember there are always healthier ways to celebrate the holiday and watch those calories. The American Heart Association (AHA) reminds us that even small changes can be important, while not sacrificing taste at all. What you eat and how you prepare it can help reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease. Risk factors include poor cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess weight. These risk factors can be addressed by preparing tasty dishes without overdoing the salt, cholesterol and saturated fat. Studies show that nearly 80 percent of cardiovascular events, including stroke, may be prevented if

fresh fruits and vegetables instead of canned and limit salt while you cook. If you are using packaged foods, look for the Heart-Check mark and you’ll instantly know which foods certified by the AHA meet their guidelines for heart-healthy foods.

When it’s time for dessert, think about fruit cobblers without a bottom crust and instead make a pie packed with more fruit, less sugar and only crumb topping. Homemade pumpkin pie filling can be cooked without a crust in small individual Pyrex dishes. Thanksgiving will be just as memorable because it is the friends and family gathered around the table that is the reason to celebrate!

Carlos Dengler plays Nils Krogstad in Axial Theatre’s Nov. 6-22 production of A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen’s timeless classic about love and marriage and women’s equality. It is directed by Axial founder Howard Meyer, who sets the play in the post-war era of the 1950s.

In his past life, Mr. Dengler was known as Carlos D, the bass guitarist with the popular indie rock band Interpol. He agreed to answer some questions from Axial’s Evelyn Mertens and me about why he switched careers in such dramatic fashion.

“I learned how to act while I was in Interpol. I created a character. His name was Carlos D, and I infused my 10-year performance with everything I had learned from my rebellious youth.

“When I realized what I’d been doing, creating this character, I realized I had really enjoyed putting on a costume and playing a role in front of people.

I thought it was a shame I didn’t have anything that could come out of my mouth, something verbal.

The New Society

A previous column, Passion or Poison, raised the question over whether our adopted faith in “consumerism” serves to edify or kill us as a nation-leader and righteous model. It ended with the suggestion that we consider the elements of transformation, if indeed transformation is our desire and need.

Some twenty-eight years ago I had a conversation with a Wall Street Research Analyst about something that eventually changed the world we live in. After a successful career of ten-plus years on Wall Street, he announced that he was leaving the company and the industry. When I asked what he’d be doing next he added that he was joining a start-up to deliver “new media” products. “What’s that?” I asked, a little sheepishly. The answer did not help. I spent the better part of that day researching a field as ill-described as the navigational sense that leads some in the right direction repeatedly.

Most had never heard of the World Wide Web in 1995. The rest is history, as they say. But what started as an innocent model of information access has exploded into an all-pervasive internet working system in the sky that has touched, if not transformed, everything we do. Not least, it has facilitated an endemic right of passage in America — the tendency toward the “conspicuous consumption” of economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen’s warning, in his book, The Theory of the Leisure Class.

According to a Westchester Magazine study article, 37 percent of residents admit to having bought something to enhance their image in the eyes of others. It is only a short hop from here to runaway “consumerism.”

There may be little evidence to refute the conclusion that consumerism is the intrinsic multiplier in capitalism; its root motivation and anxious seeking after things a confirming identity.

It has led us to leveraged lives, overspending our resources, and leaving Americans with an average credit card debt of over $15,000. It has further indebted citizens to the prerogatives of government, at all levels. We are no longer a nation of, for, and by the people by the sheer force of government impositions on many heretofore freedoms. Debt management has become the “new finance,” since balanced budgets are a distant memory, except for America’s households which must carry the tax burden of this egregious public policy.

How then, might we mend this rift and regain control of the

magnificent economic engine that is America and its resourceful population? Before I continue, the answer is not anarchism, but the regenerative essence in a self-adjusting market model that has built the largest economy the world has ever known. But it will take more than ideas and words for America to craft its rebirth.

If Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes, and Tom Friedman have cracked the economic code, which could lead to our redemption and growth, we must change the rules of engagement by the assumption of antipodal logic. To find “real” meaning in the things we do, visualization, commitment, and mechanism may need to replace the tenets of consumerism.

Personal and professional transformation requires that we become active participants in the process, in which what we do or don’t do makes “the” difference. The simple model calls for the deliberate action by each that forms the whole; a kind of wisdom of the crowds, or the more prodigious Invisible Hand of Smith’s economic model in which the actions of individuals accumulates to the benefit of all.

The example of healthy weight loss may be instructive. Hard to accomplish, the goal must start with a clear view of the outcome, a common business model. We imagine what it would be like to feel and look fit — visualization. To see where we are going is not enough; we must commit to the achievement of the goal, the realization of the vision. This requires an open expression of our intent and an unwavering sense of purpose in the achievement.

Next, we must find the mechanisms that enable a long obedience in the same direction. These are the means by which to accomplish the goal. We must plan the foods, exercise regimens, and schedule that enable success. Practice makes perfect.

The opportunity in this model resonates with many; even twenty-five year old Matthew (a reader of this column) phoned in to tell me how sincerely grateful he is to read that others believe as he does, that the principles of “right living and working” are a model of a productive future for all, not least Americans.

A market model emerges. You don’t just have things to sell; you sell things that people need or desire that have intrinsic value.

They relate to something that improves their lives, and not just their image. Feeling good about the things we have is good, so long as ownership is not the goal. Pardon the sound of judgment in my words. The perspective is fundamental to a richer model than consumerism. “We don’t so much put quality into a product or service, as the customer takes quality out.” Peter Drucker.
