In Search of Labor Day

By Bruce Apar Search online for “Labor Day” and what are the Page 1 results?

First up is the U.S. Department of Labor, which “Explains how Labor Day came to be and what it means.” That’s a good, authoritative, government-issued starting point.

Second entry on the search results is a Wikipedia page, which is surprisingly short.

Under the heading “Retail Sale Day,” we learn, Wiki-wise, that, “Ironically, because of the importance of the sale weekend, some of those who are employed in the retail sector not only work on Labor Day, but work longer hours.”

People laboring on Labor Day is the opposite of Ironic. It’s Iconic! It’s Logical!

People taking off on Labor Day is Ironic. By rights, we should celebrate it as “Lazy Day” or “Barbecue Day.” Reading on, Wiki leaks the information that Labor Day also is the unofficial end of

summer (which officially ends this year three Wiki weeks later, on Sept. 21).

As is second nature to residents of Bedford, Chappaqua, and Purchase, we also are reminded that proper social etiquette looks down upon anyone who might BRUCE be espied after Labor Day THE wearing – ugh! – white or, BLOG worse, seersucker. Don that colorless garb at your own risk, or if you don’t mind being mistaken for a leftover actor from HBO’s “The Leftovers.”

And let’s not forget that Labor Day “marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons.” Oh, joy. The return of a bone-crunching sport that reminds us we’re rushing toward the red zone of cold weather.

The helmeted Philistines at least could have the decency to wait until the Yanks and Mets are statistically eliminated from the post-season. Show some respect for the soon-to-be departed.

Moving down the search page, after an entry about travel suggestions for the three-day weekend, there’s a listing for the non-Oscar winning movie “Labor Day.” So that’s it: Department of Labor, Wikipedia, travel advice, and a forgettable flick. Since search results are based on what people aspire to know, one might conclude Labor Day doesn’t get a lot of respect from the working public.

So, as you’re flipping the burgers, let’s frankly remember that next Monday “is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

And for that, as a rehearsal for our next national holiday in November, we should all give thanks.

Merchandising That Jumps

Rich A storefront is seldom the entire resume of the business inside, but it is made more appealing by what you see from a distance and revealed of the value within by a little investment of time. Much the same as a home for sale, curb appeal is vitally important to customer engagement. Yet, most local stores have little more than roughly made signs to engage shoppers. Stores decorate for the holidays, post specials, and place tent signs out front, but most just do as others and join in “indiscriminate marketing.”

It’s a poor model for engaging and starting conversations with prospects or encouraging the conversion process.

A bicycle rack and neon sign above it at a local gourmet foods store encourages cyclists to “park and shop” close to the front door while car driving patrons search for a space in a crowded parking lot.

A local cycle store allows interested bikers to take bikes out for a run at a trail across the street before buying. The practice engages customers in the delight of riding a new bike—an irresistible treat—and introduces them to their rental business made easier by the nearby bike trail.
