Senior and Child Care Search Similarities

Recently a friend discussed the impending arrival of a new grandchild this fall. She said her son and wife had put the child’s name on a list at a day care and was told the wait would be 15 months. Simultaneously, this friend is looking for an assisted living facility for her father and saw the similarities between searches for care on either end of the age spectrum. Whichever one is needed by a family,

early preparation to avoid hasty decisions.

Research Start looking, as the couple did, before the infant care was needed, so they had time to consider all options. Cost of tuition, location and hours of operation are important, especially if a corporate calendar is needed. Similar thoughts about cost may have to be considered for senior care, depending whether the person has purchased long term care or will be paying

independently for the service.

When it appears a senior may not be able to live alone much longer,

have already been researched. For either age group, a licensed facility is a must to ensure safety, health

being followed and monitored. A private person “babysitting” might work out well for a short term or sporadic drop off, but a daily enrollment, leaving a child long hours should have state or local oversight. What is the training for the staff working with children in daycare or seniors at a nursing facility? What is the ratio and are the staff trained and credentials updated with ongoing courses, as required by the state?

Touring With the exception of the Covid circumstance, are unannounced visits allowed?

Naturally, it is expected that an appointment be made so the daycare or nursing home personnel can be available, but unexpected visits may

show another side of the operation. In a day care, do the children look happy, involved and is the atmosphere one of a calm and organized setting? When you visit a nursing home or assisted living facility, do the residents look well groomed, involved and not sitting alone in wheel chairs napping in a hallway or by a nurse’s station? Does the staff taking care of the residents seem friendly and know the residents by name as they address or escort them to an activity? What is the communication method for parents or family with loved ones in a nursing facility? Are there weekly newsletters or emails about coming events, activities and health bulletins? How quickly are phone calls returned? Can you make requests that help your child or parent adjusts to the new situation that makes the experience a better one for the whole

right placement for childcare or senior care, takes a whole family in on the decisions. The results will be a happy experience whether it is a child going to day care or a grandparent starting a new phase in an assistant living facility.
