Hands On Toys for Children’s Gifts

hundreds of dollars worth of electronic equipment to please a young child and yet I do not hear the hardy belly laughs that were produced with popping sounds.

If you are a certain age, you will remember toys that may no longer exist because they have been replaced by electronic ones that beep, buzz and have animated characters.

Children do not constantly need to be “entertained” by gadgets that require batteries or electricity. There should be a happy medium when buying children these types of toys over others that help foster hidden talents or skills.

When I was little I visited my grandmother and when the grownups chatted, I found something to amuse myself. Grandma had a metal wastebasket filled to the brim with clothes pins, but not the kind we have today with metal clips. Hers were made of solid wood and flat on both sides. When interlocked, they could be used to make a house, cabin or western fort, like the one on my favorite program, Rin Tin Tin. I did not have to bring any toys when we visited because I knew the large metal basket was there. When our children were preschoolers they would get excited about “popping paper” when it arrived inside a mailing package. They would have fun jumping up and down making as much noise as possible on the plastic bubbles popping beneath their feet. Now it takes

If there is a young child on your gift list, keep in mind the child’s age and follow the guidelines on the toy packages. It is dangerous to give a young child a toy that is too advanced and may contain tiny pieces that are inappropriate for a small child to handle. Young children put things in their mouth and this could cause them to choke. When shopping, visit the aisle that features hands on toys and craft kits to give you an idea of what is available.

Still popular are painting sets, puzzles, jewelry making kits that will have children working with their hands.

This helps with hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills. In my day my favorite craft kit was a small loom that was used to make pot holders. The square, red metal frame needed to have small fabric loops stretched across each hook on the frame. One by one another loop had to be woven in and out of the frame. Since these small, stretchable loops came in different colors you could select a color pattern or make it a rainbow

blend. I was happy when each grandmother and aunt used them in her kitchen and I could see my potholder hanging near the stove.

My husband frequently talks about the hobbies he had as a youngster which included building models of cars, airplanes or ships. A child will develop a sense of accomplishment after reading and following instructions, working on the fine details of the project and then displaying it for everyone to admire. The craft section where models are sold now include historical monuments, buildings from around the world and even replicas of animals and the interior of the human body to be assembled and worked on piece by piece.

Who knows, perhaps working with these mediums and building process might be the spark that encourages a child to go grow up to be an architect, veterinarian, doctor or engineer. Certainly more challenges and accomplishments can be discovered through the hours of enjoying a craft where thought, patience, handiwork and fine motor skills are put to use.

The Fervor of Enterprise

By Frank J. Rich Business and life have a tendency to confront us with the reality of our condition—good or bad. Ultimately, we are revealed for who we are no matter how hard we try to conceal it.

The pattern of behavior that characterizes each of us is more often some part the person we don’t like and some part the one we do. Strangely, the objective view of oneself is lost in the mix.

The workaday world often requires a heads-down approach. Much of what gets done is done by an individual in time he alone commands for its completion. That we are capable of processing (completely) only one thing at a time forms the biochemical predisposition of both our limitations and our opportunities. Objectivity, were it truly the vaunted mantle of more than our “ideal image,” would not so easily be sacrificed for our typical expressions of emotion and thought--the subjective view that produces most decisions.

Business leaders are most often viewed as those who see things clearly, with narrow focus, and people who can do the things that deliver opportunity to stakeholders. The quality displayed is often portrayed as a “hard driving man.” Not coincidentally, a number of women CEOs I’ve worked with had the steel of nails in their approach that was easily a match for the Jack Welches of the world (former CEO of General Electric). The practice is to “mark and move on;” the tracking of a productive person.

Business owners and leaders are equals in their fervor over enterprise, a dyad matched

by Adam Smith’s economic foundation stones, as told in the first pages of The Wealth of Nations.

The annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessities and conveniences of life which it annually consumes, and which consists always either in the immediate produce of that labour, or what is purchased from that produce from other nations.

According therefore, as this produce, or what is purchased with it, bears a greater or smaller proportion to the number of those who are to consume it, the nation will be better or worse supplied with all the necessities and conveniences for which it has occasion.

But this proportion in every nation must be regulated by two different circumstances; first by the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which its labour is generally applied, and, secondly, by the proportion between the number of those who are employed in useful labour, and that of those who are not so employed. Whatever be the soil, climate, or extent of territory of any particular nation, the abundance or scantiness of its annual supply must, in that particular situation, depend on those circumstances.

The abundance or scantiness of this supply too seems to depend more upon the former of those two circumstances than upon the latter.

Few of that era, or this, considered economic pari passu with growth of the state, especially among the effulgent of the day, Karl Marx notwithstanding. By the mark of Smith’s pen commerce has gained the energy for an enterprise mindset, and no science or literature or math has equaled its affect on the world, no less capitalism. But Smith’s assertion that labor is the font of all that is produced rings true.

We are people first, then the engineers of all else.
