Lieutenant Governors Greeting

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR GREETING Hello Division 8-A Thank you all for your service thus far. It is a pleasure to be working with all of you. With that being said I hope to see service at an all time high despite the nearing of the end of the service year. There will be a decrease in city events now that winter is slowly approaching, but the divisional cabinet will be working hard to organize a variety of fun events throughout the next few months. Make sure to send any ideas to myself or any of the members of the cabinet. Although each day we come closer to the end of the service year, and the day I’ll be a has been, we still have plenty of time to accomplish goals and go beyond what we planned. I look forward to seeing all the work y’all do in the next few months. Yours in service and Key Club Pride Lieutenant Governor Division 8-A Maspeth High School Cindy Pietrakowski

Webmaster: Orlando Bispo

Hey key clubbers! My name is Orlando Bispo and I am From William Cullen Bryant high school. This year I have the opportunity to serve as Division 8-a's web master. Ive been in key club for a little over year now and have fallen in love with the community and the people that have helped to make it and make it better place. Key club has helped show me the joys of giving to the community, by planting daffodils in IS10 park to make it more inviting, or by recycling at the peers, we can make the difference for a better tomorrow.

INSPIRATION SPOTLIGHT RICHMOND HILL TAKING OR GIVING Usually these letters are about awesome events and what happens over here on our little island of Richmond Hill High School Key Club but this time, we decided to just take a step back and look at the big picture and what we do for the community. We dedicate our time to the community which has given us so much so in return we are doing the same. We are not just taking we are also giving back to the community. Yeah we get community service hours and have a great reference point but what we do and the reason for doing it is way more than that. Its almost selfish to expect something in return of doing something good for the community but we are building our self better in a way that you can't expect anything

THOUGHTS ON KEY CLUB SUNNYSIDE I want Key Club to inspire others to help the community and thus volunteer within their society. Key Club teaches you to be selfless, open, life skills such as public speaking and how to give back. Key Club changes your perspective of life. We meet as a group every week on Wednesday, we come up with new ideas and brainstorm on what events we can volunteer and or design. Currently as a club we have been working on and finishing our fundraiser for Trick or Treat for Unicef which collects money in order to treat mothers with neo-nasal tetanus. As a result of such disease many families are suffering and we as Key Club hope to with the help of Project Eliminate bring an end to such disease. -

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT RICHMOND HILL ANIMAL SHELTER So with the end of Breast Cancer awareness month comes the beginning of an awesome event-filled November. To start this month off with a bark, we decided to take a trip to the animal shelter ( Get it, bark?) And honestly, it was amazing! Although the joy of seeing those cute little soft slobbering faces came with the responsibility of cleaning and crouching in cages and picking up some really unmentionable stuff it was totally worth it. Even the members were completely head over heals for the little guys. At the end of the day we all left happy and sort of bummed since we couldn’t take the animals home but mostly happy. Now that my fellow key clubbers, was just the beginning of this fine month of November. What do you guys have in store for the rest of the month?

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT FOREST HILLS ST. JUDES WALK Walk to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In a single day we were able to come together to help St. Jude change the world’s understanding and treatment of childhood cancer. As volunteers we helped in setting up for the event, participating in the walk by marshalling and cheering for walkers and supporters on the Brooklyn Bridge. We received posters and used those to cheer on the walkers. Afterwards, we cleaned up. This was a great event to help out the community and to spread support for patients with cancer.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT FOREST HILLS BT5K WALK We joined the American Brain Tumor Association at the BT5K New York City Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K Run & Walk. The funds raised will be used to support vital brain tumor research and help those who are living with a brain tumor diagnosis. As volunteers we helped out with activities, set up stands, cheered for those who participated in the walk, gave out refreshments, and more!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: ACADEMY OF A. S KEY CLUB DUES Key club member can sell candy bags as an alliterative way to pay the club. It is another way to meet new people when selling candy. Most importantly selling candy bags pays their dues while the extra money goes to the Eliminate Project. We were able to get more than ten people to use this method to pay their fee. They would go to our Coordinator of Student Affair to get their bag of candy. In total has fifty candies $1 each, so they sell the entire bag then collect the money. They hand in the money and receive $15 profit. - Academy of American Studies Bulletin Editors:Jamie Nicolo, Anna Syska, Jasmine Xiao

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: ACADEMY OF A. S DIVISION 11 TOURNAMENT Sports have made us give respect to each other based on our performance. At the Division 11 Key Club Sports Tournament me and my partner/long time friend Geren Wijaya along with our handball crew competed in the handball tournament We been playing handball together along with our other long time friends for about two and a half years. There weren’t that many Division 8A competitors at the event. We only knew a decent amount of people in the event. We competed against a team that started a while ago, and we beat them in a fair game. Even though winning feels good but it feels good enough to play against new people. We gave them respect for their effort into playing handball, we end in a handshake of respect. We only last for two rounds of the tournament, but we had so much fun in the event. The team that beat us I got to admit they are good. We gave respect to their efforts and impact they made into the game. We had an awesome fair game in the second round even though I lost. At the end of the tournaments our friends won the whole tournament we cheered for both teams for that game. We celebrated their victory at a local restaurant. We made new friends, competed in awesome games, and celebrated our friend’s victory. -Academy of American Studies Vice President Alan Garcia
