President’s Message Matt Nelligan It’s amazing, you seem to just get through the Holidays and then you look up and St. Patrick’s Day is already upon you! The State Board has had a busy but productive winter thus far. One again this year, we were very successful in getting early payments of per-capita tax. The incentive program, that was implemented this past year, seems to have broad support. Despite the fact that it leaves a little less in the State Treasury, I consider it to be an important commitment to the work of the Order at the local level. In January, we held our third and final State Fundraiser to benefit Project St. Patrick and the FFAI Christmas appeal. Thanks to your unparalleled generosity this was our best fundraiser ever. This year we will donate $2750 to the FFAI Christmas appeal and $1500 to Project St. Patrick, both are the largest donations ever given to either cause in a single-year by the New York State Board. We are surely living up to our motto in all of the causes that we have been able to assist. Speaking of fundraising, have you sold all of your State Calendar’s yet? If not, get this information to John Hennessy as soon as you can. The truth is that I just recently sent mine back, so that is proof that anyone can forget. The key is to get the checks and stubs back to John as soon as possible because you have to be in it to win it! On January, 22nd, I was proud to lead the Hibernian contingent at the March for Life in Washington DC. We had more than 50 members who joined us to demonstrate our opposition to abortion and demand change. I want to particularly thank Brother Leo Kane, our State Pro-Life Chair, for his tireless work. Leo got signs made up for our contingent so that everyone would see the AOH name and logo and associate it with defending our Catholic Faith. He also got the word out to Brothers all over

New York about the details of the March. I believe that it was thanks to him, at least in part, that our numbers were so strong. Secretary Michael J. McNabb Congratulations to the 40 Divisions that took advantage of the Per Capita Rebate. We are now in the $4.00 per Member part of the year. Please remember that any Per Capita postmarked after March 31st will be assessed a late fee of 50 cents per Member. I have not received a number of Form 9’s. If your Division has not sent it in please do so, even if there is no change in Officers. Remember this is the only way the State Board has to ensure the proper Officers receive the information they need. I would like to thank all the Divisions that invited me to attend installations. If I missed your Installation this year I will try to attend next year. If your County or Division is holding a Communion Breakfast, Ball, Fundraise, Parade or any other type of event I would be happy to attend. I was recently asked why I or other State Executive Officers did not plan on attending a couple of AOH sponsored events. My answer was simple “We can not attend an event we do not know about.” If you are planning an event and would like State Executive Officers in attendance PLEASE send us any information you have. Our next State Board Meeting will be held in East Durham on May 2, 2009. This will follow the James Hayes Golf Classic on May 1st. If you have not participated in this event in the past you are missing a great time. Sunday May 3, 2009 will be the Annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham. Immediate Past President & Calendar Chairman John Hennessy The year 2008 was a memorable one; we had a successful National Convention and State President’s dinner. The year ahead offers a challenge, the economy, up coming State Convention and the National President’s Dinner. The Calendar program was a success, but not as successful as it could have been. Out of 1000 calendars we only sold 616, this includes the AOH and the LAOH. We had 220 winners with total prizes totaling $6325.00 a full financial report will be given at the State Board meeting in May. The Calendars for 2009 have been distributed and the returns are slow, considering the size of the membership we have, there should be no reason why we cannot sell 1000 calendars.

If you have any suggestions to improve this program please let me know by phone or e-mail. I know we can make this program a success, remember it’s your program and the State Boards benefit.

District 1 Robert Flaherty As we enter the New Year all divisions have been very busy. I had the pleasure of attending installations in District 1. I also had the pleasure of installing the officers in two divisions. At the Schenectady installation, I was honored to be the recipient of their Hibernian of the Year Award. When attending the installations, I was especially pleased to see the other divisions in attendance. In January, I attended the state fundraiser for FFAI and Project St. Patrick It was a great success and a good time was had by all. At the end of January the Capital District Council met. The business of the order and up coming events at each division was discussed. The council also voted to endorse candidates for the elections at the Albany State Convention. Those endorsed are: Charles McLean - President, Michael McNabb - Vice-president, James Burke - Secretary, Timothy McSweeney - Treasurer and Brian Nelligan - Dist. #1 Director. The Irish American Heritage Museum will be having a show at The Egg in Albany on March 11, 2009. The tickets will be $25.00 each 2


and benefit the museums exhibits and educational programs. In Albany the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be on March 14th. Troy will be celebrating their 120th year; more information will be coming soon. Schenectady will be having their Celtic Fair on June 19th, 2009. It will be held on Jay St. in Schenectady from 4-10 pm. They will also be having a Celtic Day at Central Park in Schenectady on Sept. 26th, 2009. Both have no admission fee.

In Buffalo we are looking forward to the parade and to the Guinness Toast. Congratulations to the Buffalo Fireman for rejoining our ranks; Peter Margerum should be congratulated for his work. If there was an award for a newsletter, the Lockport Division would win; great job to the William J. Ryan Division 4 Lockport, NY.

Knock, Queen of Ireland" Right to Life Award. Mayor Amicone has worked tirelessly for the Right to Life movement. With the many upcoming St Patrick's Day Parades and celebrations within the Districts, I will do my upmost to attend as many as possible. I am looking forward to seeing many of my Hibernian Brothers at these upcoming events.

Welcome to another St. Patrick’s season. Hopefully we are finished with the white season.

Bill Powers I want to start by wishing everybody a Happy St. Patrick's Day and success to all our division celebrations. I just returned from Ireland and a tour with the AOH run by Coiste Irish Political Tours. I want to thank Sean Pender for organizing a wonderful seven days of educational events. It really showed me how our Christmas Appeal is used. Sean got us into an H block at Long Kesh and to the Crumlin Road Prison. We also visited Tar Anall community center and the Roddy McCorley Club/Museum. We made other stops in Armagh City and in Omagh, where the AOH made a presentation for the Basketball Club. The Mass and March in Derry was a great experience. Frank Corcoran, our State Chairman of the Christmas Appeal, should be congratulated for his work.

John Hyland I would like to start by wishing all a Happy and Holy St. Patrick's Day. Since my last report, I am pleased to inform you that the Westchester County Board has begun to have Monthly County Board Meetings. At their first meeting in January, three of the five Divisions were installed. I would like to thank Dan Dennehy, NYS Immigration Chair and Kevin Ellis, Chairman of the Standing Committee, Div. 1 Yonkers, for their efforts in securing the meeting location. The Bronx County Board held two installations for the first time in many years. Divisions 3 and 4 were installed together as were Divisions 5, 7 and 9. I have placed the name of Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone for consideration as a recipient for the first "Our Lady of

On January 22nd, the date commemorating the infamous Roe v Wade decision of 1972, a group of about ten or more members of Division 35, Kings County, attended a 6AM Mass held at Flatbush Council, K of C celebrated by Fr. Coman Brady. After Mass we boarded a bus to Washington, DC along with people from neighboring parishes and members of the K of C. One thing that you could not help but notice was the many, many young people marching, which bodes well for the Pro-Life movement. While in Washington, National Director Martin Kelly and I met with NY State President and National Pro Life Director Matt Nelligan. There were many other AOH members at the march, Thank God. On January 31st, Division 35 of Kings County honored their outgoing President, Bill Kelly, who happens to be Kings County President, with a Dinner Dance. 3


All of Bill’s children attended with their spouses as well as many of Bill’s friends. A good time was had by all. On February 22nd, a great many people from District 5 attended a reception for The Grand Marshal, and his Aides, of the NY City Parade; including Kathleen Reilly representing Kings and Francis McLoughlin representing Queens. This reception was held at Antun’s on Springfield Blvd. in Queens and is an annual event.

District 6 Ed Friel District #6 Nassau and Suffolk Counties are doing well. There are many activities planned to celebrate the up and coming St. Patrick's Day. We will be part of the parades in both Counties as well as New York City. There will be many dinner dances to attend. The 37th Anniversary Bloody Sunday Mass was held in Babylon. It was sponsored by the Derry 14 Committee. The Celebrant was Fr. Henry Reed. Congratulations to the Committee. Both Counties have been working very hard on recruitment, the support of hunger projects and other local charities. The Nassau County Board is involved with several other Irish organizations in the renovation of the Easter Monday Monument, which is located in Mineola, New York. This years Easter Uprising Com-

memoration will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Mineola Court House. I would like to wish all Hibernians a Happy St. Patrick's Day and a Happy and Holy Easter.

Political Education Richard M. Morris Brothers all; I hope you are doing well and I hope you are taking the time to make contact with your elected representative's at all levels on issues of importance to you. It works and is good for your mind, body and spirit to purge itself of the strife of political discontent. Let them know they work for you and if they insist on making laws that are against your beliefs that you will actively seek to replace them at the next opportunity. Let them know you are aware of the secular, same sex marriage, prochoice/pro-abortion, antiChristian/Catholic and tax increase legislative bills/issues finding there way into every aspect of our political spectrum; be it local, county, state or national. Legislator's at every level know very little effort is put forth (by we, the majority) to stifle bad legislation. Below is a copy of a letter I took the time to write to Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith indicating concern over issues of importance to our Order. It may or may not meet some people's standards as a well written letter but I wrote it and I believe got my message

across. Brothers you can do the same. President and Majority Leader, Malcolm A. Smith 907 Legislative Office Building Albany, New York 12247 Your Honor, My name is Richard M. Morris, NYS/Ancient Order of Hibernians, Political Education Chairman, private citizen and taxpayer of New York State. If you aren't familiar with our Order let me give you a brief history: we are an Irish Catholic organization organized in New York City in 1836 for the purpose of protecting our Priests from what were known as "The KnowNothings" a majority group of city populace that discriminated against Irish Catholics and their religion, we have thousands of members throughout the state and do much work for charity. First let me say congratulations on your election as President and Senate Majority leader. If it is not presumptuous I want to say, let's here and now recommit ourselves to the great cause of the dignity of human life above all...and marriage and racial equality and respect for reasoned moral argument and religious truth. It is my understanding from reading several newspapers that you are a family planning advocate have a pro-choice viewpoint and would encourage the Democrat controlled majority to pass the Reproductive Health Act which in effect would codify into law the Roe v Wade ruling. Legislative matters such as these are of strong concern to our Order 4


and its members. On your website you state you want to familiarize us with what is in the future for this next legislative session, that we share a common goal improving the quality of life for the people of the state and make government more efficient and so on. Of course we agree with all the statements you make about improving healthcare coverage, stop wasteful spending and practice prudent policies and bring about bi-partisan consensus and give equal status to majority and minority members on the Senate floor. I believe you will do all of what you endeavor with the knowledge the legalization of Gay-marriage will not cut cost to the already overtaxed taxpayer but increase the burden on the taxpayer and you know how it will do so. The same can be said about Pro-choice legislation lest we forget we were all once embryo's (babies in the womb) and the religious aspect concerning these issues, I wonder just how would the passing of this legislation enhance the quality of life for the dead baby whose life is legally allowed to be put asunder by man? By the way, it is understood everywhere Pro-choice is code for no-choice at least where I dwell. Passing of this legislation may and probably will cause Bishops throughout the state to call for the closing of Catholic hospitals and there are many. How does this enhance the purported concern for health issues? I know many special interest groups believe all they have to do is throw

money at a politician in the form of campaign funds etc. and the needy political candidate will see all matters their way. These special interest groups are not concerned with unity or inclusion of diverse ideas but only with getting their own way. One must "judge the content of their character" not the color of their money. I wish you all the good fortune and religious faith, that which is above us and that which is within us. Catholic Action Daniel Case I had hoped that I would not have had to write this letter to you, but the ugly head of Catholic bashing has reared again. My last letter to you was in regard to the showing of the blasphemous play CORPUS CHRISTI at the Rattlestick Theater in New York City, where our Lord was portrayed as a homosexual and having relations with His Apostles!! Well coming this summer between June and August 2009 the movie with the same content and title will open its ugly doors here in the USA. This disgusting film should be banned as an outright attack against our Christian principles, and the precepts of our order.

I encourage all worthy brothers of the AOH to not only write to your local theaters requesting that this not be shown, but to write or tell everyone you know to boycott the showing of this film. There has been a positive response in some of the European countries that have elected not to show this filth. Now let us here in the USA do the same in defense to our Christian beliefs and support the motto and pledge of our order.

Christmas Appeal 2008: It was my honor and pleasure to travel to the north of Ireland with Sean Pender, National FFAI Chair and a group from the AOH. From New York were Brothers Tim Myles, Bill powers, Vincent Tyer, Tom Wright and myself. Also on the trip were Brothers from New Jersey, Ohio, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. LAOH President Mary Ryan and two sisters from Massachusetts were also present. The trip included visits to Belfast (including Long Kesh and the Crumlin Jail), Derry (we attended the Bloody Sunday 5


March) and South Armagh. The locations and events were inspiring and at every stop we were welcomed and thanked for our support of the Irish people; not only for this year, but for our support over many years. The people of the North are very grateful to you all. It made me very proud to be a Hibernian and see these worthy causes rewarded. The Christmas appeal was very successful, the AOH was able to contribute over $55,000 to various organizations in the North. As the political climate continues to change; so do our contributions. We are trying to reach out to all communities as a gesture to the new realities of the Stormont Government. I do not have the final numbers on the Appeal as of this date so I will update you when they are available. The final National Appeal number was up substantially from 2007 and I believe NYS was still among the leaders in contributions. I estimate the NYS total was about the same as last year. NYS was awarded a decorated hurley stick (caman in Irish), made in Belfast, noting the contribution of over $1000 for 2008. Every AOH Division, County or State Board that contributed over $1000 will receive the same. One final thank you to Rita O’Hare of Sinn Féin; without her help we would not have been able to visit Long Kesh; which was the highlight of the tour.

Irish Issues The government executive is now meeting; the DUP and Sinn Féin are at a stage where they are taking a breather before the next elections in May. I was told that the DUP knows that Policing and Justice will be devolved shortly after the election. I’m sure the DUP is hoping that they will get stronger and SF will lose ground resulting in a situation where they can obstruct this once again. It will be a very important election from that standpoint. SF must show strength in order to convince the DUP to follow through. SF has made it clear; that if the P&J issue is not resolved; there will be no government. We await the May elections and we await the actions to follow. Tiocfaidh ár lá

Organizer Liam McNabb “All Irish Need Apply” All is well on the organizing front. On February 2nd I met with potential members in Owego, Tioga County, about starting a new division. There is a great deal of interest at this time and we expect more interest in the near future. Pat Hogan (Binghamton AOH member) lives in Tioga County and is leading our efforts. Special thanks to Tom Corcoran, John O’Herron, and Division President Mark O’Herron from the Elmira Division for attending and assisting with the meeting.

There is also a great deal of interest in organizing a new division in Geneva (Ontario County) through the efforts of Tom Corcoran (Elmira) and State Secretary Mike McNabb. They met with several potential members in January. Many thanks to Tom and Mike for leading the way in Ontario County. At the end of February, I will be in Elizabethtown, Essex County, for an “Informational Session” and hope to have enough interest for a new division. We have been meeting on a monthly basis with the interested group in Columbia County and hope to have progress in the months ahead. In addition, we continue to promote the Order in an effort to attract new members in Johnstown (Fulton County). If any divisions or county boards need recruitment materials, specifically our recruitment banner (with our 1-800 telephone number) or recruitment easels or posters, please feel free to contact me or Warren Scullin, Deputy State Organizer. In closing, I encourage Brothers to contact me for more information about the recruitment and retention grant program as well as if anyone has organizing tips or areas of interest for organizing.

Liam McNabb 2009 Convention Update Save the date!!! The New York State AOH and LAOH Convention begins with our Opening Mass at Historic Saint Mary’s Church on Wednesday, July 8th and concludes with our Installation Banquet on Saturday, July 11th. We are pleased to partner with the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Downtown Albany again for the very affordable rate of $124 per night (plus taxes) and we are confident that you and your guests will enjoy the sites, events and scenery that downtown has to offer. Scholarship Thomas Conway New York State AOH offers a scholarship to a current High School Senior. Is there a member of your family who is graduating from High School this June? The New York State Board generously awards the Austin V. Carew State Scholarship each year to a deserving student whose parents/guardians are active members and who have taken their Major Degree. The student must sit for our scholarship exam which tests knowledge of Irish History. The exam will be given on Saturday June 20, 2009. In addition the student’s SAT scores are also considered in determining the recipient of the scholarship. Enclosed you will find the necessary information and application which must be completed for a student to qualify for the exam. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail message; tomconway35@yahoo.com. Let’s get the news of this scholarship out to all our members. I personally request that all division presidents bring this to the attention of their members. Divisions may make as many copies of the application as needed. Some reminders: 1) Parents or Guardians of the student must have Major Degree. 2) Student must take our Irish History exam.

3) SAT scores must be provided. 4) Applications must be sent to the Scholarship Chairman by May 15, 2009. 5) Information on the scholarship exam will follow upon receipt of application. This scholarship is funded by the James F. Hayes Memorial Golf Tournament, which will be held in East Durham this year on May 1st. This is also the New York State Board weekend in East Durham. Get your clubs out and prepare for a great day of sport and fellowship on the links while at the same time supporting our scholarship. National Director Martin Kelly Congratulations to Michael J. Gibbons who has been selected to be the Grand Marshal of the New York City 2009 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Michael J. Gibbons was raised in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. Mike was born in the Bronx of a Mayo-born father and Nova Scotia-born mother. Mike graduated from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York and served in the U.S. Navy. After a successful business career, he retired as an Executive Vice President and General Manager of Estée Lauder in 2007. Mike is a member of Division No. 29 A.O.H. of Manhattan. He is currently a Director of Flax 7


Trust America and a Member of the Mayo Society of New York. He is also a member of The Taoiseach's Economic Advisory Board in the United States. Mr. Gibbons is a former Chairman of the International Center in New York, a private, not-for profit organization that welcomes and assists immigrants and refugees to America. He is a past-Director of the American Ireland Fund, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Foundation and the former cochairman of the Knights of St. Patrick. Mike and his wife, Cynthia, have four children and four grandchildren. They reside in Palm Beach, FL and in Carmel, New York. The Queens County A.O.H. Annual Dance was held on November 15th. Frank McLaughlin, county president, was the Hibernian Man of the Year and Bridget Kearney was the Ladies Honoree. It was a pleasure to see so many New York Hibernians there including a delegation of the N.Y. State Executive Board led by State President Matt Nelligan. On Saturday night, November 22nd, I attended the Ladies State A.O.H. Testimonial in honor of Kathy Conway, New York State L.A.O.H. President, held in Suffolk County, Long Island. Hibernians from all across the state were again present. Mike McCormick, National Historian, was the outstanding master of ceremonies for the evening.

On the following day, at Rory Dolan’s Restaurant in Yonkers, I joined fellow Hibernians honoring Dan Dennehy as the Bronx County Hibernian of the Year. It was also the occasion for a presentation by the National Board of a Certificate of Merit to Dan for his outstanding work for Irish immigration. The award was presented by National Treasurer Jim McKay who journeyed from New Orleans with his lovely wife for the festivities. December 6th marked the Albany Division No. 5 A.O.H. Installation and Dance at the Hibernian Hall in that city. Timmy McSweeney, county president, was presented with an award as Hibernian of the Year by his fellow members. Matt Nelligan, Tom McNabb, National Secretary, Bob Flaherty, State Director, and Dan Dennehy, State Immigration Chairman, conducted a very memorable ceremony. Division No. 5 has grown rapidly over the past few years. I received many nice invitations to attend A.O.H. functions from many parts of the country, but due to family obligations I was unable to attend. Thanks to all of you who remembered me. Hopefully, for those missed events, I will be able to make amends by attending a future gathering. I am sending emails two or three times a week as National Chairman of Catholic Action, but I know I am not reaching all that should be on my list.

Immigration Dan Dennehy Members of the NYS AOH have provided aid and comfort to detained Irish immigrants. Without the aid of our members, these detainees spend many lonely and desperate days and weeks awaiting almost inevitable deportation. Siobhan Dennehy, President of the Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers (CIIC) has informed me that the CIIC are developing a handbook that provides information detailing what happens when Immigration Customs & Enforcement detain an immigrant. According to Siobhan, it will contain practical information about how to find a person who has been detained, how to find ICE detention facilities in your area, general information on the US prison system, and how to visit a detainee once you have located them. The handbook will contain information on the rights of detainees and immigrant rights as well as useful resources in the United States and Ireland. The new J-1 Program, a one year non-renewable visa geared towards Irish and American college students, is up and running. Applicants must be enrolled in a college program or within one year of graduating. Those who currently living in the US and have overstayed their visa's and/or are subject to the 3 or 10 year bars will not be eligible. Schumer, D-N.Y., will take over as Chair of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, replacing Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who left the committee to concentrate on a health care overhaul as Chair of the Health, Labor, Pensions and Education Committee. Schumer has been an ally to Irish immigrants’ issues in the past and we will encourage future cooperation.

Right to Life Leo Kane 2009 will be a challenging year for pro-life. I received a phone call from Bernadette Smyth, director of Precious Life, in Northern Ire-

land. She mentioned she had spoken with Father Heyd (from Chicago) who had given her my name. Bernadette was anxious to meet the Hibernians and offer support any way she can to help the cause. She was able to persuade the legislature in Northern Ireland to ban abortions. Bernadette joined us for breakfast prior to the RTL March and encouraged all of us with her talk on how abortion can be banned; like it was in Northern Ireland. She has been invited back again by the AOH D.C. State Board. I was encouraged to see the number of AOH members had increased at the breakfast and the march. I want to thank all who came by bus, that had to stay with their groups, that I wasn't able to see personally. I felt the NYS AOH Pro-Life Signs, which I passed out to members, stated our message clearly. Hopefully everyone is working on the incentives I put forth in 2007 , if anyone does not have them, please let me know. You can use these for "Pro-Life Action". As a reminder, I'm still accepting nominations for "The Lady of Knock Queen of Ireland ProLife Awards", until March 31st. On Jan. 23rd, Obama signed an executive order ending the Bush Administration’s ban on giving federal money (tax payer’s money) to international groups that perform abortions; or provide information on the option. President Obama has shown to be a strong supporter

of partial birth abortions thru out his short political career. Interesting that at a "Prayer Breakfast" on Feb. 5th , the President spoke that he felt there is "No God" who condones taking the life of an innocent human being that cannot speak for his/her right to life. Roy Mulchay (prolife chair for Br Co. Div. 1), will be attending Catholic Advocacy Day in Albany, N.Y. on March 10th. I encourage other divisions to send a representative. Please encourage your Parish to have at least one intercession at mass for Pro-Life. Ex: For our new President Barak Obama, and all of our newly elected legislators, may they serve their people with honesty and integrity and care especially for the poor, the needy and the unborn. The Catholic Bishops of the United States, have unanimously called us to prayer and action to prevent passage of the radical “Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA) and to oppose other attempts to overturn existing pro-life laws and policies. This year voices are needed more than ever. If passed into law, FOCA will impose upon the entire country an abortion regime far worse than anything brought on by Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. The current level of 1.1 million abortions a year will go up, not down. Please pledge now to oppose it in anyway you can. Call the 9

Since my last report I discussed recruitment strategies and distributed organization materials at Division meetings in Queens, New York County and the Kings County Board. At this time I would like to report that a new Division has been formed in Woodside, Queens in conjunction with the Lincoln counsel of the Knights of Columbus. At the National Convention in New Orleans I received a new supply of organization materials. I also have the “All Irish Need Apply” recruitment poster. Commodore Barry Vic Vogel “In Good Company” The following is a list of significant facts regarding Commodore John Barry. What make them especially interesting are the people who respected and admired him. John Barry was appointed Captain in the Continental Navy by the President of Congress, John Hancock, on March 14, 1776.

• A letter of personal commendation noting Commodore Barry's valor was written by General George Washington on March 12, 1778. • Commodore Barry served as the head of the American Navy under Presidents George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. • President Woodrow Wilson was the keynote speaker at the unveiling of the Barry Statue in Franklin Park in Washington D.C. on May 16, 1914. • On President Dwight D. Eisenhower's approval, the United States government presented the Republic of Ireland with a statue of John Barry which was unveiled in Wexford Harbor on September 16, 1956. • On June 27, 1963, President John F. Kennedy placed a wreath at the Barry Statue in Wexford Harbor, Ireland.

Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate September 13, 1981 as 'Commodore John Barry Day' as a tribute to one of the earliest and greatest American Patriots, man of great insight who perceived very early the need for American power on the sea." • The 109th Congress passed a Joint Resolution (H. J. Res 38) declaring ''that Commodore John Barry is recognized, and hereby honored, as the first Flag Officer of the United States Navy." The "Barry Resolution" was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 22, 2005. One would think that Commodore John Barry was respected and admired by the most powerful leaders in the history of the United States of America. One would think that Commodore John Barry deserves a statue at the United States Naval Academy. SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT NEW YORK STATE BOARD ANCIENT ORDER OF HIBERNIANS IN AMERICA Each year, the New York State Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians awards a scholarship for college study. The amount of the award depends upon the number of qualified candidates, as well as the availability of funds. The typical scholarship award is $500 per year for four years – a total of $2000. This scholarship is intended for 2009 high school graduates who will be matriculating freshmen in college in September 2009. THE NEW YORK STATE AOH SCHOLARSHIP IS COMPETITIVE AND THE AWARD IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: 1 The parent or guardian of the recipient must be a Major Degree member in good standing of any AOH or LAOH Division in New York State. 2

The parent or guardian of the recipient must maintain membership in their respective division of the AOH or LAOH for the term of the scholarship.

Each year, the recipient must provide evidence of satisfactory academic performance during the term of the scholarship by submitting to the Scholarship Chairman a transcript of grades received from the previous academic year.

THE SELECTION OF THE WINNING APPLICATION WILL BE BASED UPON THE FOLLOWING: 1 A positive recommendation by your parish priest. 2

AOH Scholarship Test Results. This is a test of the applicant’s knowledge of Irish History 389 A.D. to the present. This test will consist of a short answer part and an essay whose emphasis is Eamon DeValera, Michael Collins or James Connolly. Test will be given on Saturday June 20, 2009.
