A HISTORIC PHOTO OF THE EQUATOR, THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE WINDING TALE FOUND ON PAGES 5057. PHOTO COURTESY OF SAN FRANCISCO MARITIME NATIONAL HERITAGE PARK (PHOTO G05.30.306P)

This month’s issue of Northwest Yachting honors history all the while forecasting the future, an eclectic mix that seems appropriate for November, a month when we gather together with friends and family to reflect on what the year has brought us, while also beginning to look forward to the next. In the history department, Randy Woods takes a look at the long life, eventual demise, and perhaps curious afterlife of the 135-year-old schooner turned tugboat, the Equator, in the feature that begins on page 50. After sitting in repose at the Port of Everett for over 30 years, the wooden craft was dismantled by researchers early this fall in the intention of preserving parts of the history that you’ll, no doubt, find as fascinating as I did. Then, we return to the present day, with the latest Arrivals headed to the Northwest as we look at models from Absolute Yachts (pages 40-41) and Arksen (pages 42-43), as well as preview the Italian import to head across the pond, Bluegame Yachts. Flip to pages 58-63 as we go deeper into the blue with this fleet of chic crossover yachts that will be available exclusively from Worth Avenue Yachts Seattle. Also inside: The latest nautical news and notes in Making Waves (pages 23-24, and 28-30); Mark Yuasa takes you crabbing and clamming in Tight Lines (page 64); Port of Call travels to the culturally rich Spanish Virgin Islands on pages 72-73; and, should you be looking forward to the holiday season, we have a wealth of events in Anchors Aweigh (page 20) to help you captain an endcap to 2023. Lasting Legacy Our September issue “Rebel with a Cause” feature on local boat builder LMM Boats sure got likes and double taps online, as well as some well-deserved praise in the comments: @ontario_canvas: Legacy Master Marine are all fantastic folks with a true passion for boats. It is wonderful to see them getting the recognition they deserve. @dvlukno: Proud to be a part of the making of legend!

[ BEHIND THE SCENES ]

Reporting for Duty Magazine deadline scheduling is always an interesting science, but our quest to capture the Equator in her final days for the feature found on pages 50-57 this month was one for the ages. Writer Randy Woods dutifully tracked the progress of the salvage project all spring and summer long in order to time it just right so that we were able to capture the efforts of the teams from Texas A&M University and Gonzo Boat Works, as well as some of the last images ever of the vessel intact—thanks Randy!

@prismgraphics: Wow, what a boat! We're thrilled to have had the opportunity to wrap this rugged beauty. Our team had a blast working on it, and we're stoked that the vinyl wrap had no issues sticking to the HDPE. That's what we call a solid partnership! Can't wait to collaborate on more of these awesome boats in the future. Keep 'em coming, and we'll keep 'em looking sharp! #vinylwrap #ruggedboats #boatlife #boatwraps #innovation

B.C. Makes History with World's First All-Electric Tugboat Fleet The recent launch of the world’s first two all-electric tugboats by a unique partnership in British Columbia is part of an aggressive effort to reduce maritime-related carbon emissions that, hopefully, will continue not only in Canada, but around the globe. The HaiSea Waimas and the HaiSea Wee’git, launched in July and August respectively, are the first two battery-powered tugs to be put into service in the B.C.’s North Shore region by HaiSea Marine, a joint-partnership between Vancouver-based Seaspan Marine Transportation, Corvus Energy of Norway, and the government of Canada’s indigenous Haisla Nation. A third electric tug, the HaiSea Brave, is expected to arrive in the area within the next six to eight weeks. The ships are ElectRA 2800 SX series tugs designed by Vancouver-based naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. and constructed in the Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey. Both vessels use 6,000 kWh batteries for their electric motors, which can produce about 7,000 hp and 70 metric tons of bollard pull while producing zero carbon emissions during operations. Measuring 93’ in length and about 42’ abeam, the tugs have a top speed of 12 knots and can perform all ship berthing and unberthing missions on battery power alone. The batteries can be recharged in a matter of hours at the dock, using clean energy provided by B.C.’s extensive hydro-electric power grid. The Haisla Nation’s role in the development of the electric tugs is the result of negotiations with Seaspan to make the region’s tugboats more environmentally sustainable. In exchange for the agreement to use electric tugs, the Haisla Nation’s approved the permitting of Kitimat, B.C., as the base of LNG Canada’s new marine export terminal and the site of HaiSea Marine’s floating tug maintenance facility. The two current tugs now operate out of Kitimat, providing ship assist and escort services to LNG carriers.

HaiSea estimates that the three-tug fleet, once fully operational, should reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 10,000 metric tons per year, compared with comparable diesel-powered vessels, as well as significant reductions of nitrous oxide, sulfur oxide, carbon monoxide, and particulates. Aside from the obvious environmental benefits of using electric power, the HaiSea vessels also operate without the large smokestacks often seen on traditional diesel boats, so they have unobstructed views from anywhere on the vessel, which aid in the tugs’ maneuverability when escorting multiple boats. The much quieter electric engines are more responsive to helm controls and produce roughly 33 percent less underwater noise than conventional tugs, which make them less harmful to sensitive marine life in the region. Although the initial costs to build the HaiSea Marine tugs vessels are higher than those of traditional tugs, Seaspan estimates that the cost savings in reduced fuel and operational expenses will make the zero-emission investments pay for themselves in about eight years. While HaiSea Marine is a pioneer in the business of electric tugs, it will soon be joined by other ports around the world that are seeking more ecologically sound options. “Emissions-free harbor tugs are no longer just a dream,” said Sanmar’s chairman, Ali Gurun. “As you can imagine, we have had a lot of interest in the ElectRA series from operators around the world.” According to Sanmar, another 28 electric tugboats are now being built for the global market. The shipbuilder is expected to release another four ElectRA Series tugs this year to ports in South America, Norway, and Turkey. For more details on the growing fleet, go to: haiseamarine.com. 23

[ EXPANSION TEAM ]

Seattle Boat Acquires Idaho Marina, Expands Operations in the Northwest Marine dealer Seattle Boat Co. has expanded its operations eastward, following the purchase in September of Tobler Marina in Hayden, Idaho, and the representation of several more boat brands across the Pacific Northwest. In addition to absorbing much of Northern Idaho’s inland marine business, Seattle Boat Co., which has five locations in the greater Seattle area, now represents several new boat manufacturers in the region. The expanded list includes Bennington Pontoon Boats, Chaparral Boats, Duckworth Boats, Moomba Boats, Nautique Boat Co., and Supra Boats—all of which had been represented by Hayden. The award-winning Seattle Boat is also the exclusive dealer for Barletta Pontoon Boats, Cobalt Boats, and Malibu Boats. Tobler Marina, situated between Harrison Slough to the south, Lake Hayden to the east, and Lake Pend Oreille to the north, was established in 1948 and is the oldest certified marine dealer in the Northern Idaho and Spokane,

24

Washington, region. As one of the area’s largest boat dealerships, with three locations in Hayden, Coeur d’Alene, and Post Falls, Idaho, it also offers parts, service, canvas, upholstery, fiberglass repair, and marina slips at four different marinas in the large nearby lakes. The welcome move comes after Seattle Boat weathered a rough spring season, marred by a massive fire in March that destroyed 58 boats at its storage facility on Lake Union and damaged at least 10 other vessels. The fire, involving two storage racks that collapsed in the flames, was ruled to be arson, costing $8.5 million in damages. Seattle Boat Co. has been in business for nearly 40 years, with operations that include new, used, and consignment boat sales, service and parts, marina slips, Skylaunch moorage, boat clubs, and fuel docks. [ OPEN FOR BUSINESS ]

Waterline Boats Opens New Sales Offices in Everett Seattle’s Waterline Boats is spreading its breadth across Puget Sound this year, with the August opening of a new sales office on the Port of Everett’s rapidly changing waterfront. This growth now gives the brokerage three brick-and-mortar offices in the region, the others being the Seattle flagship location and an expansion to Port Townsend three years ago. Waterline’s newest office is located near J and K Docks at Everett’s new Waterfront Place development, offering display slips for sail and power boats at the Port’s marina. The office is also near the city’s promenade area and other popular attractions, such as Fisherman Jack’s restaurant, The Muse Whiskey & Coffee Bar, and the Indigo Hotel, giving it the possibility of notable foot traffic in the region. The Everett opening “has been a long time coming,” said Lisa Helker, vice president of Waterline, adding that the brokerage office first broke ground at the Port of Everett in 2017. Welker said the Port has plenty

28

of amenities to increase its business, especially in recent years during the ongoing re-development of its waterfront. Waterline Boats, the home port for Helmsman Trawlers in the Northwest, was founded in Seattle’s Lake Union in 2008 and is a member of Boatshed Everett, which is operated by the Boatshed International Yacht Brokerage group. Before the 2020 opening of the Port Townsend location, the company had been operating as a mobile brokerage in the area for several years, Helker said. Waterline specializes in trawler-style yachts, but also has experience selling sailboats, motor yachts, and “all varieties of vessels,” she added. Duwamish Waterway Habitat Bounces Back at ‘People’s Park’ In a rare bit of good environmental news for the South Sound region, the health of estuarine habitat appears to be improving along Seattle’s most heavily trafficked waterway, thanks to an environmental improvement project called the Duwamish River People’s Park (DRPP). Heralded as the largest restoration project on the Duwamish River in a generation, DRPP began more than 20 years ago, when the Port of Seattle’s old Terminal 117 was converted from a post-industrial site into a 14-acre nature habitat. A coalition of Duwamish Valley residents, government agencies, and local Tribes collaborated on cleaning up the site, which had been degraded and re-channeled for the previous 100-plus years, destroying roughly 99 percent of the area’s wetlands and native flora and fauna. The DRPP’s restoration efforts included demolishing obsolete structures, removing pavement and 60,000 tons of contaminated soil and sediment, and replanting 40,000 native plants on the property. The team also added a public viewpoint pier, walking trails, interpretive art, and a hand-carry boat launch. As a result of the improvements, a team of Port environmental staff, fish biologists, and University of Washington researchers recently found more than 7,000 juvenile chum salmon, nearly 250 natural-origin Chinook salmon, over 900 non-salmonid fish, and salt-water marsh vegetation, including bulrush and beachgrass, that increased 40 30

percent over the life of the project. Today, the park also serves as a “learning lab for youth seeking hands-on experience,” according to the World Ports Sustainability Program. “Community engagement and environmental stewardship are making a difference for Seattle’s only river and those who live along its shores,” said Ryan Calkins, a Port of Seattle Commissioner. “There is still so much to do to support a clean and healthy Duwamish River, but we have the right community and environmental experts working together.” The Port’s 10-year monitoring program measures several variables at the DRPP site, such as wildlife presence, site stability, carbon sequestration, and vegetation health. The newly restored marsh vegetation will help protect fish from predators, remove pollution from the water, and support an ecosystem that provides an abundance of food for spawning fish in the waterway. The People’s Park program was established with an innovative funding model as well, called a “habitat credit bank,” which enables third parties to purchase “mitigation credits” to help them comply with national regulations. Revenue from the sales of these credits can be used to fund additional habitat restoration projects. For more information, go to: portseattle.org/projects/ duwamish-river-peoples-park.

[ HOP ON BOARD WITH THESE FRESH FIXATIONS FROM OUR LOG BOOK ]

TH E CURRENT BY KATE CALAMUSA / RENDERINGS COURTESY OF CANDELA

Fleet of Ferry Swedish e-boat builder Candela is looking to electrify the world’s waterways with its fast-flying P-12 commuter ferry—and has Seattle in its sights next.

Once upon a time, the storied Mosquito Fleet buzzed about the Puget Sound, ferrying passengers and goods to and fro. Today, a buzzy European company—Candela, makers of the sleek C-8 electric hydrofoil boat—is looking to emulate that same model with an all-new electric ferry that, they say, could help make the commuting lifestyle much more efficient. “Most transportation here was originally done by boats. Then land-based transport took over because it was faster and cheaper,” explains Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog. “Now we’re changing all that again.” That change comes in the form of a zippy hydrofoil ferry known as the P-12. Featuring wings slung under the hull that cut energy usage by 80 percent compared to conventional vessels, the shuttle also produces no wake, making it eligible for exemptions from speed limits, as demonstrated in Candela's hometown of Stockholm, where the model is currently running as a test program. (There, the P-12 ferry is set to reduce rush hour commute times from 50 minutes by car to 25 minutes by foiling ferry.) The hydrofoil tech helps provide a smooth and efficient ride at speeds of 30 knots, while the vessel is stabilized by a flight control computer system that uses sensors to scan the surface ahead and adjust the hydrofoils’ angles in real-time, accounting for waves and wind. “It’s a magic carpet ride. It’s incredibly quiet and smooth, more akin to a sailplane than anything else, says Hasselskog. “Once you've 34

tried it, it’s hard to go back to traditional boating.” In Seattle, the company says the efficiency of the P-12 Shuttle could make the Seattle-Bainbridge Island commute up to ten minutes faster than current options. It could also pave the way for new routes like a direct link to Magnolia or West Seattle, which could be completed in just 13 minutes and offer up to 15 departures within a 12-hour period. With capacity for 30 seated passengers in addition to space for bikes or wheelchairs, the P-12 uses the same amount of energy per passenger as a hybrid electric bus—and in fact, Candela envisions a system for waterborne transport that’s similar to a bus line. “Replacing a few larger vessels with a flexible fleet of many smaller ones results in a waterborne transport system with more frequent departures. This offers more direct lines and introduces new routes that don’t currently exist,” says Hasselskog. The brand demonstrated their hydrofoil tech to press and media during a stateside visit in September in hopes of garnering more attention to the idea; time will tell if their vision for a modernized and electrified ferry fleet comes to pass. At the very least, the idea seems to have merit; Navier, a U.S.-based competitor in the hydrofoil space, also demonstrated their e-ferry concept to interested city leaders in Des Moines, Washington, just last month. Dehumidify the Damp with Eva-Dry If the gales of November come early this year, the best way to keep your vessel dry and mold-free is to use a portable humidifier. This EDV-2500, the latest model from Eva-Dry, can pull moisture out of enclosed spaces measuring up to 2,500 cubic feet, which is the equivalent of a 17- by 18-foot room. Using thermoelectric Peltier technology, the 72Watt EDV-2500 is whisper-quiet and can collect about 20 ounces of water per day from the air with 80 percent relative humidity. The compact 13- by 9- by 6-inch unit fits into many tight spaces on board and can hold up to two-quarts of water, with an automatic shut-off valve for a full tank. For those putting boats in storage for the winter, the EDV-2500 can help prevent moisture from creating stagnant, musty odors in fabrics and upholstery before the season returns next year. $92 // Available from Fisheries Supply in Seattle, fisheriessupply.com

A Killer Accent for Your Galley You have your silverware put away and your dishes and glasses washed, but you still need that special nautical accent to complete the perfect galley you’ve created. This Orca Fragole kitchen towel, with a beautifully embroidered breaching killer whale seen in mid-leap, might fit the bill. Designed by Seattle-based, home-decor artist Timothy De Clue, the towel is made of 60 percent premium Italian cotton and 40 percent linen, along with hand-guided embroidery. The orca illustration is paired with a handsome row of solid black and herringbone-style stripes. Measuring 27- by 23-inches, the elegant towel is also machine washable. In addition to the orca design, De Clue offers Seattle hockey lovers a similar Fragole hand towel featuring charming Kraken artwork, available in an octopus’s garden of colors. $42 // timothydecluecollection.com

Organization is ‘Not a Boat Accident…’ Chief Brody won the battle with a very big, very angry fish in Jaws because he was organized and resourceful. You, too, can be the talk of Amity Island with this whimsical zip-up organizing case from Seattle-based Cecelia Stitch. With plenty of hand-drawn, Jaws-themed in-jokes for film buffs (including Quint’s crushed beer can and the “beach closed” sign that never seemed to work), the blue-and-white, 9.5- by 7-inch canvas case features a nylon lining, a heavy-duty brass zipper, and a leather pull loop to keep grudge-holding ocean predators from sinking their many, many teeth into your boat supplies, toiletries, snacks, coins, or shark-repellant. With this one little bag, you can keep our possessions orderly, protected, and dry—all without needing a bigger boat. ARRIVAL S BY RANDY WOODS / PHOTOS COURTESY OF ARKSEN

Arksen Explorer Series 85 & 65 Set a course for adventure with the exceptionally seaworthy Explorer Series vessels from Arksen that are soon to be available in the Northwest via Oaksmith Yachts. The U.K.-based Arksen brand reached the Northwest’s shores earlier this year, with its 30’ Adventure Series yachts that turned a lot of heads. Soon, Arksen’s much bigger sisters in the Explorer Series will take the spotlight, first with an 85-footer in early 2024, and then the more compact 65’ model. Both new aluminum-hulled Explorer Series vessels will be capable of extended sea excursions, along with a host of luxurious, customizable layouts. The Arksen 85, designed by naval architect firm Humphrey’s Yacht Design, recently completed a global tour with its first prototype, which features an enormous aft deck capable of fitting a tender or RIB with room to spare for two open-air settees and other personal watercraft. Inside the lobby area of the customizable salon is a day head to port and a short passage forward to a starboard galley. Past the galley is the main salon, with two C-shaped sofas facing each other, bisected by a central passageway and a central table that can unfold to accommodate up to 12 people. All of the salon area is surrounded by wide windows, providing sweeping views. One other layout option replaces the galley with an expanded salon seating area for casual dining and includes another passenger cabin forward. An interior stairway from the lobby leads to the bridge deck above, which features a walkaround passageway and two outside seating areas, fore and aft. Inside the enclosed bridge is another C shaped settee and table to starboard, opposite a sofa to port, with a chart table located aft. Forward is the main helm with two captain’s chairs and an array of digital displays and navigational tools. A watertight door to port leads to an outdoor Portuguese bridge. Belowdecks, the generous beam of the Arksen 85 allows space for four cabins, each with their own en suite heads. The master, located aft, includes a king-size berth, a side seating area to starboard, large porthole windows for natural lighting, and a shower that can double as a steam room. The two other guest cabins forward can be converted into single or double berths,

42

with the third bow cabin configured for two single bunkbeds. The Arksen 65 may be 20’ shorter, but it is still a very capable bluewater vessel. With a range of 3,700 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 9 knots, the 65 can accommodate up to eight people for an extended ocean voyage. It has a large and comfortable interior and ample storage for an entirely self-sustainable cruise of up to a month with six people. The aft deck includes a wide swim step that can carry a RIB tender, plus two facing sofas around a central table and an outdoor BBQ to starboard. The interior cabin includes a portside galley equipped with Miele appliances. Forward of the galley is a salon with an L-shaped settee opposite a sofa chair and a folding dining table suitable for eight people. Just forward of the salon is the navigational bridge with two helm chairs that can be rotated to face the salon seating area and encourage interaction. A second upper bridge is accessible from the aft cockpit and can be arranged in an open-air or enclosed configuration for better navigational visibility. With the engines located midship on the Arksen 65, the cabins are separated into two fore and aft sections. From the starboard side of the helm, stairs lead down to the master cabin at the bow, with an en suite head and shower, and a guest cabin with twin berths and shared access to the day head. An aft staircase opposite the galley leads to the separate third cabin which can be converted into twin or double berths, and also has an en suite head. The Arksen 85 is powered by twin Cummins QSL9 diesel engines that can reach a top speed of 14 knots, but cruise comfortably at 9 to 12 knots. The total range is 7,000 nautical miles, making it capable of a round trip from Seattle to Hawaii and back. The Arksen 65 includes two John Deere turbocharged diesels that can achieve speeds of up to 12 knots. A hybrid power system on the 65 also allows the boat to operate in “silent mode” and use electric motor propulsion over short distances, powered by solar-charged batteries.

1995 Transpacific Eagle 40 Trawler On offer from the Waterline Boats location in Everett, this handsome trawler is ready to work or play. While this Eagle 40 trawler is nearly 30 years old, the care from its current owner over a 20-year period shows in its sparkling brightwork, gel coat, and forest-green Awlgrip hull. Designed by Seattle marine architect Ken Hankinson, this well-preserved gem from Transpacific Marine has cruised all over the globe, including Alaska, British Columbia, the Great Lakes, the Bahamas, and up and down the East Coast. Today, the handsome trawler maintains its sturdy, work-a-day charm while including amenities comfortable enough for long-range cruising or live-aboard use. This Eagle 40’s deep bow, full-length keel, and large fiddles on countertops and shelves help provide stability in ocean swells. The aft cockpit and walkaround boat deck are protected by substantial gunwales. A RIB tender can also be secured athwart a storage locker in the cockpit, which also includes a small swim step at the stern. Entering through the wooden aft companionway door, the wood-lined salon is two steps down, featuring a cushioned, L-shaped dinette arrangement to port with a folding table, lit from above with a skylight hatch. Forward of the salon to port is the galley, which has large storage cabinets above the stainless-steel sink. Appliances include a three-burner Princess propane stove and oven on the port wall. To starboard across the galley, a wide food-preparation counter sits atop a NovaKool refrigerator and freezer. Three steps up from the galley is the wood-paneled pilothouse, which has a raised settee and a small table aft of the helm to port. The helm to starboard features a metal ship’s wheel with Hynautic hydraulic steering, a Ritchie

compass, Morse throttle and shift controls, Raymarine navigation systems and digital displays, a chart plotter, and autopilot. Sliding doors on either side of the helm provide access to the outside side decks. Atop the pilothouse, accessed by a ladder from the cockpit, is a compact flybridge with additional helm controls, a retractable bimini top, and a prominent aft radar mast. Beneath the helm dash is a short, three-step passageway to the stateroom, with a queen-size island walk-around berth, a skylight hatch, and a head compartment to starboard. A separate shower is located to port. An additional guest sleeping berth can also be created in the salon by combining the dinette settee with another sofa to starboard. The Eagle 40 has undergone a number of maintenance procedures and upgrades over the years. In 2000, a Wesmar bow thruster and a Dickson stern thruster were added. The hull received a fresh coast of Awlgrip paint and the railings were reinforced in 2008. The engine room features one Cummins 6BTA 5.9M diesel, which puts out 220 hp, allowing the vessel to cruise at 7.5 knots and top out at 9.5 knots. The Cummins has racked up 8,495 hours of use but was removed in 2012 so the owner could replace all seals and gaskets, rebuild the starter and supercharger, and inspect the engine mounts. A 2015 tune-up was also performed, adjusting all valves and adding new injectors. A new Balmar alternator was installed in 2019 and the oil filter was changed in August of this year.

Piotr Bojakowski, assistant professor for Texas A&M University’s Nautical Archaeology Program, was describing his keen interest in the historical significance of a famous maritime relic on the Everett waterfront. He had to raise his voice, however, to be heard over the racket made by demolition equipment that was ripping apart the same relic before his eyes.

THE WEATHERED HULL SITS IN REPOSE DURING HER FINAL DAYS IN THE EVERETT BOAT SHED THIS PAST FALL. PHOTO BY RANDY WOODS

“It’s the last remaining sailing schooner of its kind,” he said, as crewmen used a handheld pneumatic jack to pry another board off the weathered hull. “Once they finish dismantling it, there will be no other ship like it in existence.” As residents of Everett, Washington, and local maritime history buffs may already know, the former schooner and converted tugboat Equator disappeared this fall from the 10th Street shed in which it sat for more than 30 years. With stints as a majestic sailing trader, a work-a-day tugboat, and a recovered piece of nautical history all playing parts in its century-long backstory, the Equator has reached the end of its long life, and now being separated into warehoused piles of timber and hardware. But Bojakowski’s tone on that September day was not melancholy. The effort to save the moldering ship was fought and lost decades ago. Instead, he was excited for the rare opportunity he and his colleagues had to learn more about a poorly understood element of shipbuilding history. “For a lot of wooden ships of the era, there is not much documentation about how they were actually built,” Bojakowski said. “It’s a one-of-akind opportunity to strip the planking, see the framing system, and quickly record it.” Over the last few months, Piotr Bojakowski and his wife, Katie Custer Bojakowski, also a nautical archaeologist at Texas A&M, have thoroughly inspected, scanned, and cataloged the entire hull of the ship. Local demolition contractor Gonzo Boat Works then carefully dismantled the entire structure this fall so that the remains can be sorted. Using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanners, photogrammetry, and 3D modeling software, the Texas A&M team is now determining how every plank, every bronze nail, every strip of 54

caulking was pieced together more than a century ago. “Since we couldn’t preserve the ship, at least we can preserve the data,” Bojakowski said. The Port of Everett, having taken over custody of Equator through Washington’s Derelict Vessel Program in 2022, is working on an interpretive display about the vessel’s storied history. It is also donating several pieces of the ship to a local artist, who plans on transforming the ancient wood into sculpture. “It’s a unique partnership between the archaeology team and the contractor, as well as with the artist,” said Garrett Jensen, associate port planner for the Port of Everett. “There’s no real guidebook on how to take one of these boats apart or document a historic vessel, so this is also very helpful for the researchers themselves.” Born and Born Again Most working ships undergo multiple overhauls and reconfigurations across the decades, but the story of the Equator is remarkably long and eclectic. Built in 1888 in Benicia, California, by famed West Coast boat builder Matthew Turner, the Equator began its career as a two-masted, 81-foot pygmy schooner that plied the South Pacific trade routes. Today’s examples of Turner ships only exist in fragments or drawings, which makes the intact Equator catnip for marine archaeologists. “This specific ship is probably the last surviving one built by Matthew Turner,” Bojakowski said. “Turner was considered one of the most prolific shipwrights on the West Coast. The framing he used was an art.” In its first decade, the Equator’s most notable achievement was having a world-famous passenger. Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll

and Mr. Hyde, chartered a voyage from Hawai’i to the Gilbert Islands on the Equator from 1889 to 1890. Even at this early stage in Equator’s life, it was an outdated vessel, as most wooden sailing ships were being converted over to coal-powered steam engines. “No one wanted sailing schooners for cargo anymore,” Bojakowski said. “Everyone wanted an engine and to go faster.” But the Turner design, he said, ended up extending the life of Equator in the South Pacific. The larger steamships of the day required coal rather than sails to make them profitable, so they were unable to reach places like Hawai’i and Samoa, which did not yet have reliable coal supplies. Equator, he said, was able to fill that gap until more refueling ports were established. Along the way, Equator faced several near-death scrapes with typhoons and groundings but managed to survive as a schooner. Eventually, though, the owners of the Equator realized in the early 1900s that conversion of the vessel to a tugboat configuration would be more economical. Over the years, it was retrofitted with engines powered by steam, oil, gasoline, and finally diesel, working steadily as a research vessel, a cannery tender in Alaska, and a Puget Sound tug, hauling fish and logs up and down the Pacific Coast. 56

But by the 1950s, the tug’s creeping obsolescence became undeniable. The owner, Puget Sound Tug & Barge, stripped Equator of its engine, decking, and superstructure in 1956 and sank the hull as a breakwater off Everett’s Jetty Island. For most 68-year-old boats, being scuttled and abandoned would mark the endpoint of their existence. For Equator, however, this was just the midpoint of its 135-year journey. Dreams Deferred After slowly rotting in the shallows for a decade, Equator began to get noticed again from some Everett-area residents, especially local dentist Eldon Schalka. By 1967, Schalka and the Everett Kiwanis Club gathered enough funds to raise Equator’s hull from the muck. Over the next few years, Schalka and a group of Everett donors, including Dick Eitel of Fisherman’s Boat Shop, created the nonprofit Equator Foundation with the intention of fully restoring the old tug to its former glory. In 1972, the vessel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places—the first artifact in Snohomish County to receive such an honor. By the mid-1980s, the foundation estimated that a refurbishing of Equator would take three

years and cost $200,000. The hull bounced around different locations for a few years until landing at the 10th Street boat launch, where today’s open-air shed was built in 1990. Soon after, the vessel ran into logistical problems. “The Port reached out to museums many times in the ’90s, and there was actually a lot of interest,” said Port of Everett’s Jensen. “But it would have cost too much money to move such a large, heavy vessel that might not survive the journey.” The Foundation’s efforts then came to a virtual halt in 1992 with the tragic death of Schalka in a plane crash. From that point on, little more was done to the old tug in the shed. By 2017, the boat that refused to go under finally heard its death knell when its stern section, which had been extended during its conversion into a tug, collapsed under its own weight that November. The Port knew something had to be done before the rest of the fragile structure disintegrated, so the removal process began. So far, the Texas A&M work on the Equator’s remains has been a boon for 19th century marine archaeology. “There are still some beautiful original 30- to 40-foot Douglas fir timbers left,” Bojakowski said. “The keel is over 60 feet long, all made from one piece of wood. To find timber like that today is almost impossible.” Ironically, some of the wood’s longevity came from its own rust. “There are so many metal bolts in the timbers that the iron corrosion seeped into the wood itself,” he explained. “It actually impregnates the wood and preserves it.” One of the most unique aspects of Equator is its curved bow. “It had a very sharp, beautiful entry and expanding to its midship,” he said. “You could see that it was not intended as a tugboat. It was specifically designed from the start as a sailing vessel.”

collaborate on a book about the ship’s travels. The collected wood will soon be sent to celebrated Seattle artist John Grade, who will use the material to honor Equator in sculptural form. Grade also created the massive “Wawona” artwork featured prominently at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, made of wood from the old three-masted schooner Wawona, which was similarly dismantled in 2009. While the completion date and final artwork to be made from Equator’s timbers is not yet known, Jensen said Grade’s plan is to use as much of the existing recovered keel as possible. Meanwhile, the Port of Everett is keen on educating visitors about Equator’s less glamorous but still vital contribution to the working waterfront. “I always find it interesting that the history of the Equator is tied back to its first nine or ten years as a schooner, but she really spent most of her life as a humble tug,” said Catherine Soper, the Port’s public affairs manager. “So, as a seaport, we want to make sure that that story is told as well.” The Port’s plan, Soper said, is to erect some interpretive displays about the history of Equator by the end of the year, featuring historic photos, a timeline, maps of its journeys, and some videos, located inside the atrium of the Port’s Waterfront Center. A 1:48-scale model of the ship, made by Robert Yorczyk and loaned to the Port, will also be on display. In addition, the old tug may be remembered best by today’s youngest generation as a playground attraction. In August of this year, an outdoor playset was installed by the 10th Street boat launch featuring a plastic ship for kids climb on, bearing the Equator name on its hull. “Equator has always been a workhorse, whatever she’s doing,” Soper added. “We see her moving on to live her next days as art. That’s her next job.”

Artistic License The Equator story has entered uncharted waters now but will likely continue for many more years. The Bojakowskis plan to write some academic articles about their findings, or perhaps

BLUE IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR BLUEGAME ON: WORTH AVENUE YACHTS SEATTLE INTRODUCES THE ITALIAN IMPORT BLUEGAME YACHTS TO THE NORTHWEST. 59

Adventurous, bold, and intrepid; sophisticated, sleek, and urbane: somehow all these adjectives apply to the fleet of vessels found within the Bluegame Yachts line from the Sanlorenzo Group. Since its inception in 1958, the Liguria, Italy-based Sanlorenzo has become well reputed throughout Europe for delivering bespoke, expertly crafted vessels— and now Worth Avenue Seattle is bringing both Sanlorenzo and Bluegame to the Northwest audience.

60

“We are thrilled to bring the world-class offerings of Sanlorenzo Yachts and the dynamic spirit of Bluegame Yachts to our valued clients in Seattle,” says Ray Prokorym, managing partner for Worth Avenue Yachts in Seattle. “This expansion reflects our commitment to providing the most exceptional yachting experiences and opportunities for our clients, and we look forward to helping them explore these stunning vessels.”

WITH AN EXPANSIVE SWIM PLATFORM THAT FLOWS EFFORTLESSLY INTO THE INTERIOR GATHERING SPACES, THE SLEEK BGX60 IS A CROWD PLEASER.

AT LEFT BELOW: THE NICELY APPOINTED BG74 GUEST QUARTERS. AT RIGHT: A PROFILE VIEW OF THE SPEEDY BG42.

Renowned for its fusion of elegant design with adventurous spirit, Bluegame Yachts offers a unique platform tailored for the modern explorer.

Stunning indeed, the Bluegame models seem especially well attuned to the adventurous spirit of Northwest boaters, blending luxurious comfort with versatility to allow owners to effortlessly transition from cruising to water sports to exploration. Having been added to the Sanlorenzo line in 2018, Bluegame’s partnership with that brand is still in its relative infancy, but the firm’s designs date all the way back to its formations in 1972. Today, Bluegame is managed by the second generation of the original founding family, who have utilized the Sanlorenzo assets to create new lines and introduce modern concepts. Case in point: The Bluegame’s current BG and BGX range of vessels that will be available via Worth Avenue Yachts. The BG series—which currently includes the 42, 54, and 74 models—blend high-end, Euro-chic design features such as airy living spaces, open cockpits, and supple lounging areas with sports performance elements like a Volvo IPS propulsion system and highly-engineered layouts to create the very definition of crossover cool. The BG74 is a prime example of this potent blend.

A fusion of an open-cockpit concept and flybridge model, its outdoor areas are arranged over three levels: an expansive swim deck in close contact with the sea, a large living area with sun lounge that flows seamlessly with the dining area, a spacious bow area and, finally, an easily accessible and enjoyable sundeck. The BGX models, naturally, have an “x factor,” building on the BG line with even larger spaces and enclosed helms. Here, Sanlorenzo’s supple and sleek design aesthetic is especially felt, as the BGX models are the epitome of sophistication. Fluidity between exterior and interior; expansive beams that allow for open-concept living; and impressive amounts of glass surfaces that allow light to filter into inside, with yet more features that Worth thinks will have Northwest yachters feeling very Bluegame, indeed. >> The Bluegame Yachts BG and BGX lines will arrive stateside shortly alongside several Sanlorenzo Yachts models (see next month’s issue for a sneak peek of that line!). TI G HT L INE S CONTRIBUTED BY MARK YUASA, WDFW

Shell Game It’s time to pull out those pots and shovels: MARK YUASA digs into the details of two quintessential fall shellfish—Dungeness crab and coastal razor clams. Autumn has arrived and with it comes the possibility of gathering razor clams off coastal beaches and trying your luck at catching Dungeness crab in some areas of Puget Sound. Clamming Up The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish managers announced tentative coastal razor clam digging opportunities through December 29, with more dates forthcoming in 2024. The outlook for the 2023-2024 razor clam season is based on summer population assessments and showed a decrease compared to the past few years, but overall the razor clam populations remain robust and healthy on Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks. Other key takeaways, according to WDFW, are a digging schedule with less digging days per low tide series, only some beaches per day, and less digging days overall. There is potential for some beaches to reach their total allowable catch of razor clams early and thus be unable to stay open through the end of the spring season, which usually occurs in late April or May. There is also a strong likelihood that diggers will find fewer big clams and more small clams, resulting in a lower average size on all beaches. Another important factor that always plays into each season—and led to postponement of digs at Mocrocks for the opener that was to begin on September 29—are increased domoic acid levels, a natural toxin produced by certain types of marine algae that can be harmful or fatal if consumed in sufficient quantities. Domoic acid toxicity levels remained elevated on beaches through early October, so diggers should continually check the WDFW website before digging to confirm that beaches remain open. (Final approval of marine toxin testing by 64

the Washington Department of Health usually occurs about a week or less—sometimes two to three days—prior to the start of each digging series.) Upcoming tentative dates include: November 12-18; November 24-29; December 13-17; and, December 26-29. The most successful digging occurs between one and two hours before the listed time of low tide. On all open beaches, the daily limit is 15 clams per person. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container, and all diggers must keep the first 15 clams they dig, regardless of size or condition. All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach; WDFW recommends buying your license before visiting coastal beach communities. Not all beaches are open on each day of a series, so diggers should check the WDFW website at: wdfw.wa.gov/. Nab that Crab No need to feel crabby about this uplifting news: many Puget Sound marine areas have reopened daily for recreational crab fishing through December 31. Waters that reopened to sport crabbing beginning October 1 included: Marine Area 4 (Neah Bay, east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line); Marine Area 5 (Sekiu and Pillar Point); Marine Area 6 (East Strait of Juan de Fuca); Marine Area 7 (San Juan Islands); Marine Area 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island, and Skagit Bay); Marine Area 8-2 (Port Susan and Port Gardner); Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet); and Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal), but a section north of Ayock Point only. Of note: Crabbing will not immediately reopen for a winter season in Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton Area) or Marine Area 11 (Tacoma-Vashon Island) unless managers can

confirm, based on estimates from catch card reports for the summer period, that enough quota remains to allow a winter fishery. The portion of Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal) south of Ayock Point and Marine Area 13 (South Puget Sound) will remain closed for the winter season due to ongoing conservation closures of all crab harvest in these areas. Crabbers are reminded that setting or pulling traps from a vessel is only allowed from one hour before official sunrise through one hour after official sunset. The daily limit in Puget Sound is five Dungeness crabs, males only, in hard-shell condition with a minimum carapace width of 6¼ inches. Crabbers may also keep six red rock crabs of either sex per day with a minimum carapace width of five inches, and six Tanner crabs of either sex with a minimum carapace of 4½ inches. Crabbers must have a Puget Sound Dungeness crab endorsement to harvest Dungeness crab from Puget Sound. All Dungeness crab caught in the late-season recreational fishery must be recorded immediately on winter catch record cards, which are valid through December 31. Winter catch reports are due to WDFW by February 1, 2024 so that the next year’s planning can begin. RAC ING SHE ET TEXT AND PHOTO BY DOUG HANSEN

Viva La France DOUG HANSEN and the Seattle-based Smoke crew take the show on foreign waters for a chance at the thrilling Le Voiles de St. Tropez regatta in Southern France. When you get invited on an adventure, the best thing to say is “yes”—and sort out the “how” later. This was my answer when my good friend Steve Travis asked if we should plan to participate in a regatta in Europe earlier this fall. Steve owns the Seattle-based TP52 Smoke that myself, and a cast of characters, are lucky enough to race on. Over the years, sailing with Steve has taken us all over, from Cowes week in the United Kingdom to Antigua in the Caribbean, plus more than a few laps of Vancouver Island in the Van Isle 360; he is always on the lookout for the next adventure. As the months passed, he found us a boat and dialed in on the regatta to sail it in. After a lot of anticipation, we dusted off our passports and got on the plane in late September, headed for another adventure of a lifetime—this time to take part in Le Voiles de St. Tropez in breathtaking Southern France. Once just a small fishing village, the town of St. Tropez has become a popular destination for artists, writers, and celebrities over the past few centuries. The charming medieval enclave is surrounded by stunning beaches, littered with luxury yachts, charming shops and markets, and a bustling nightlife of bars and restaurants. It stands strong as an icon of the Mediterranean lifestyle. The old town of St. Tropez, known as La Ponche, is a charming maze of narrow streets, colorful houses, and quaint shops and restaurants. It offers a glimpse into the town’s historic past and provides a delightful atmosphere for wandering and exploring. Best of all, the whole town encircles the ancient inner harbor, which is overwhelmingly packed full of the most beautiful boats on the planet. 66

Aside from the breathtaking setting of the French Riviera, the spectacular things about Le Voiles de St. Tropez are the boats. Hundreds of boats, with thousands of crew, all come together to celebrate the sport of sailing. While there are numerous sub-divisions and classes, the three main groups are split up into the Maxi, Classics, and Modern classes. The Maxi racing class is genuinely the most unreal aspect of this event and defines the ideas of the jet set. Complete with America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race veteran crews, this is the pinnacle of the glamorous aspect of sailing. The Classics are the largest group, with hundreds of beautiful wooden yachts ranging from small boats just over 30 feet long to those over 100 feet that boast over 30 crew. They are nothing short of spectacular: Entire classes are comprised of racing yachts that are over 100 years old, but if you watched their starts, they are not acting their age. It’s not often that you get to watch literal museum pieces thrown around the racecourse, but there is something magical about seeing an entire fleet of century-old machines stretch their legs and do what they were built to do: race. Finally, the Modern class is a bit more familiar to most racers, be it with the occasional exotic thrown in to mix things up. A hefty spread of boats from racer cruisers up to thoroughbred carbon fiber TP52s skippered by literal princes, the fleet welcomes all who want to throw their hat in the ring and race. The racing takes place on coastal courses, generally around 20 miles in length and around various marks. The most challenging part of the day was essentially getting in and out of the

Gulf of St. Tropez. Shifting winds and crowded mark rounding set a challenging stage for crews to work around the course. Perhaps the most unique challenge is the number of spectator boats out on the water watching the racing, often paying little attention to where the racers are trying to go. There was more than one incident of screaming to get the attention of a small powerboat as they took photos of the fleet while blocking the lay line to the mark. The racing scene in the South of France is highly competitive, to say the least, with teams and crews coming from all over the world to participate. We were racing with the modern fleet onboard a beautiful Italian Cookson 50 named TestaCuore, and we had our work cut out for us going up against a dialed-in fleet of racing boats. Our boat was a super cool offshore racer, a 50-foot weapon with a canting keel, which was terrific when we had the right conditions to use it. Ultimately, we found a mix of results with such a large fleet; we raced hard and made good moves and bad moves. Ultimately, it was a tough competition, and solid crews and well-sailed boats did well; that is all you can ask for with such a large fleet in such a fantastic place. With a week so full of adventures, it is impossible to dive into this trip's details here; as I sit on the plane flying home, my head is still spinning with all that has happened. I have one thing to say: Put this event on your bucket list, and if you get the opportunity to go on an adventure to St. Tropez, just say “yes.”

SEA FARE BY JAMES O. FRAIOLI / PHOTOGRAPHY BY TUCKER + HOSSLER

Cozy Up Drizzled with a punchy peppercorn sauce, this easy, roasted quail dish is the epitome of fall comfort food. November is the perfect month for cozy Northwest dishes like this one. Here, we feature two northern bobwhite quails served on a bed of wild rice topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce. This delicious fall meal is featured in my cookbook, Golden Steer Steakhouse Las Vegas. The dish is easy to make and can be quickly assembled in your galley or kitchen. Bobwhite quail, if you’re not familiar, is a moderate-sized quail and the most common species of quail in America. Though you don’t typically see them offered every day in your local supermarket, quail can be ordered easily from various farms with a few days’ notice. You can also try another small upland bird like squab, partridge, dove, or grouse, or go larger with a game hen such as Cornish, pheasant, or guinea fowl. When making the peppercorn sauce, different types of peppercorns will work, such as green or pink, but black peppercorns seem to be best because of their distinct flavor and appearance in the sauce.

Roasted Northwest Quail with Wild Rice

Peppercorn Sauce

Serves 1 or 2

Makes about 2 cups

2 teaspoons olive oil 2 quail, cleaned 1 cup cooked wild rice, heated 2 tablespoons Peppercorn Sauce, recipe follows Chopped fresh Italian flat leaf parsley, for garnish

½ tablespoon white roux (1 part olive oil, 1 part flour) 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ teaspoon minced garlic ¼ teaspoon seasoning salt ½ cup chicken stock ½ cup beef stock ½ teaspoon A-1 Steak Sauce 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 tablespoon Heinz 57 Sauce ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon black peppercorns, roughly crushed ¼ cup finely chopped button mushrooms ¼ cup finely chopped celery ¼ cup finely chopped white onion

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Add the oil to a large sauté pan along with the quail. Place in the oven and roast the quail until cooked through, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven. Arrange the warmed wild rice in the center of a serving plate and place the roasted quail on top. Drizzle the Peppercorn Sauce over the top. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.

Begin by making the roux: In a sauté pan over low heat, combine 1 part olive oil with 1 part flour and mix well. Cook the roux, stirring frequently, until it reaches the consistency of a smooth paste. Remove from the heat and reserve until ready to use. In a sauté pan over low heat, add the olive oil, garlic, seasoning salt, chicken and beef stocks, A-1, ketchup, Heinz 57, Worcestershire, vinegar, and the peppercorns. Whisk to combine. Add the chopped mushrooms, celery, and onion, and continue whisking. Allow the sauce to simmer over low heat. Add the roux to thicken the sauce, and whisk occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and serve warm in a gravy boat.

A James Beard Award–winning cookbook and cocktail author with more than 40 published titles to his credit, Fraioli’s books have been featured on Ellen and the Food Network, and in Vogue, People, Forbes, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. He resides in Bellevue, but keeps his boat (a 37-foot Riviera) in beautiful Anacortes, the gateway to his beloved San Juan Islands. Have a cookbook idea or project in mind?
