The new family friendly National Forest Cycle Centre at Hick's Lodge, Ashby de la Zouch, opens in May. The National Forest Wood Fair returns to Beacon Hill Country Park on Monday 29 August, a brilliant day out for everyone.

The Green Footprints Challenge has enjoyed another highly successful year, with many local businesses, groups and individuals across North West Leicestershire signing up and getting involved. The Challenge encourages everyone across the district to do their bit to reduce their impact on the environment and increase their Green Footprint.

The Green Footprints brand has grown and flourished, with a strong emphasis on partnerships and community. Such has been the campaign's success that it has gained further national recognition, including Recycling Team of the Year, a second Green Apple Award and ourplace™ winning the Urban Design Group's 2011 Public Sector Award.

North West Leicestershire clearly boasts a large number of highly committed individuals and organisations who take their environmental responsibility very seriously. It is important to recognise and promote this hard work and dedication, with the aim of inspiring others across the district to follow their example. The Green Footprints Challenge Awards help to achieve this and provide an important platform for local groups to share their experience and successes with a wider audience.

The Challenge wouldn't be the success it is without the support we have had from local businesses, public organisations, voluntary groups and the Council’s own staff. Our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Challenge and, in particular, to the sponsors of this year's awards.

Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel

Northern Parishes Community Agriculture Project

The hotel currently holds the Green Tourism Business Standard Silver Award and recently won the Best Western Events Hotel of the Year. By installing low energy lights, solar panels and a pool cover, the hotel managed to save £25,000 over a six month period. Staff closely monitor water, gas and electricity at the hotel and recycle a wide range of materials. They have set up an innovative carbon offset programme and have devised environmental ‘pillow talk’ cards.

Young people from the Northern Parishes Youth Group first cleared a piece of derelict land and then planted, tended and harvested their own organic vegetables and herbs. The project, which has been supported by the District Council and Youth Service, has helped the young people develop their horticultural and leadership skills and taught them about food miles. The group are looking forward to a bumper crop this year and to learning how to cook their own produce at home.

FC Cartons Ltd

VIP - Thringstone Wall Mural

Castle Donington-based FC Cartons Ltd is one of the UK’s leading providers of carton gluing to the Print and Packaging Industry. They have held ISO14001 accreditation for the past five years and have been steadily working to reduce their carbon footprint, offsetting the residual by planting native trees locally. All cardboard and paper waste is recycled, with 100% rejoining the paper cycle within one month. The company also operates a car share scheme and encourages staff to cycle to work.

Thirty five young volunteers took part in this VIP (Volunteering, Internships and Partnerships) project that saw Henson's Lane Park being dramatically transformed by a giant wall mural. Three hundred local residents were consulted and twenty community groups and businesses contributed to the design of the wall that has twenty six panels, all with a local environmental theme. The project helped bring the community closer, encouraging different generations to work together to help improve the village.

Moira Furnace

VIP - Western Rangers Team

Moira Furnace is one of the district’s most popular outdoor attractions and combines a Grade II listed museum, nature reserve, canal and tea rooms. A team of dedicated local volunteers work hard to increase biodiversity, enhance educational potential and improve the visitor experience. Staff have undertaken a baseline energy assessment, identifying water and energy savings that should help it reduce its energy bills by around a third. Future plans include installing solar panels and using the canal as a water source heat pump.

This VIP project has encouraged young people in the local area to develop a respect for and ownership of their local environment. With support from the Youth Service and Rangers Service, young people are encouraged to get involved in management of the Grange Nature Reserve. The young rangers help with practical habitat management, wildlife projects, community action days and woodland crafts and tree planting. The project has enabled young people to gain environmental awards and helped reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

Magda Allen, Measham

Friends of Thringstone

Magda Allen is a keen environmentalist and is proactive in spreading the message at work as well as living the ‘green’ life at home. She leads by example, encouraging colleagues to reduce energy use, recycle, and car share where possible. At home Magda keeps her energy use to a minimum, using low energy light bulbs and by choosing energy efficient products. She is a keen recycler and composter and grows her own organic vegetables.

The Friends of Thringstone has over 90 members and meets monthly to plan a wide range of environmental improvements for the village. This awardwinning group works in partnership with the local school and groups to carry out litterpicks, remove graffiti, plant and maintain flower beds and wildlife areas and run community events. The group also runs an energy monitor loan scheme and has organised smarter driving training for local residents.

Sue & Michael Golightly, Ashby

Sence Valley Conservation Volunteers Trust

Sue and Michael Golightly produce very little household waste and reuse and recycle as much as possible. They use low energy lightbulbs throughout their home and are looking to change to a green energy tariff. The couple support their local shops in preference to larger stores, walking into Ashby to do their shopping. For longer trips they use public transport wherever possible. They grow most of their own vegetables and until recently had their own allotment

The Volunteers meet monthly to carry out numerous tasks at Sence Valley Forest Park, including hedge laying, installing a new orienteering course, willow control to protect a wildfowl scrape, maintaining a sand martin wall, dry stone walling, sowing a wildflower meadow and erecting and renovating otter holts. The group provides a daily warden service for the site and undertake bird surveys, run a forest school for nursery school pupils and help run events and visits.

Rod Weston, Hugglescote

VIP North West Leicestershire Rangers

Rob Weston is passionate about home composting and works tirelessly to encourage others to adopt a greener way of thinking, often willing to stand for hours in all weathers to do so. Over the last year Rod has volunteered over 200 hours to run master composting workshops and sessions. In addition he has organised competitions, given talks, set up an online composting forum and worked hard to establish a compost demonstration site.

The Ranger Volunteers are a diverse group of 65 local people who help the Western Ranger Team carry out conservation work on over 20 country parks and local nature reserves across the district. The Volunteers assist with a wide range of activities such as woodland management, hedge laying, survey work, footpath installation, pond management, tree planting and bird box building.

The group also gets involved with planning conservation tasks as well as supporting public and school events.

Schools Shortlist

Sustainable Urban Design Shortlist

Castle Donington Community College

This year sees the introduction of an exciting new award category for sustainable urban design. The theme for 2011 was ‘Home’.

The College has been working hard to reduce its carbon footprint and in the past year has set up a number of exciting schemes that encourages the whole school to get involved. A reward scheme has been set up to encourage pupils to volunteer for ‘green’ activities, including a textile collection scheme, lunchtime gardening club, tree planting, bird box building and fruit picking from the school orchard to name just a few.

The judges considered five recently completed developments and shortlisted two projects:

Dennis Street, Hugglescote

by Waterloo Housing Group with Lychgate Homes

Green Gang, Kegworth Primary School The Green Gang is a group of twelve pupils who take the lead in encouraging environmental improvement within the school and the wider community.

The group has introduced paper recycling and composting, created a school garden and run campaigns to encourage staff and pupils to help reduce energy and water consumption. They have also taken part in village litterpicks and gained sponsorship from local companies to plant up Kegworth Market Place.

Located on the site of a former Baptist Church and beside a Grade II Listed Building, this development comprises seven new homes. The judges were particularly impressed by the way the new development was sensitively designed to fit into the existing streetscape, with careful attention afforded to the design of the elevation, materials and landscaping. The rear of the properties are south facing with solar panels helping to give these new homes a greener footprint.

Daybreak, St. Mary’s Avenue, Donington le Heath

Orchard Community Primary School Over the past year the school has worked hard to create an environmental education area in the school grounds, including a large pond, wildflower garden, wooded area and sensory garden. Pupils have built bird and bat boxes and have been encouraged to take part in the school's gardening club to learn how to grow vegetables and fruit. The school has set up a cycle scheme and was the first in the county to install a biomass boiler.

Fifteen years ago families of children with profound learning difficulties started the Daybreak Charity. The charity was formed to create a place where their children could live independently when they could no longer be cared for at home. In 2011 these children (now adults) moved into their new home.

Green Footprints Challenge Awards 2011 Students from Stephenson College Art & Design department once again took on the exciting task of designing the Green Footprints Challenge Awards for 2011.

The Awards will be presented to the winners of each category.

The College ran a project in which the Award designs were the end result. Students taking part presented their ideas to NWLDC CEO Christine Fisher for feedback and further development. Each design entered was considered on its artistic qualities and the practicality of transforming the design into an Award. The impressive work of the winning student will be unveiled at the Green Footprints Challenge Awards.

The College has been working hard to reduce its carbon footprint and in the past year has set up a number of exciting schemes that encourages the whole school to get involved. A reward scheme has been set up to encourage pupils to volunteer for ‘green’ activities, including a textile collection scheme, lunchtime gardening club, tree planting, bird box building and fruit picking from the school orchard to name just a few.

The judges considered five recently completed developments and shortlisted two projects:

Dennis Street, Hugglescote

Green Gang, Kegworth Primary School The Green Gang is a group of twelve pupils who take the lead in encouraging environmental improvement within the school and the wider community.

The group has introduced paper recycling and composting, created a school garden and run campaigns to encourage staff and pupils to help reduce energy and water consumption. They have also taken part in village litterpicks and gained sponsorship from local companies to plant up Kegworth Market Place.

Located on the site of a former Baptist Church and beside a Grade II Listed Building, this development comprises seven new homes. The judges were particularly impressed by the way the new development was sensitively designed to fit into the existing streetscape, with careful attention afforded to the design of the elevation, materials and landscaping. The rear of the properties are south facing with solar panels helping to give these new homes a greener footprint.

Orchard Community Primary School Over the past year the school has worked hard to create an environmental education area in the school grounds, including a large pond, wildflower garden, wooded area and sensory garden. Pupils have built bird and bat boxes and have been encouraged to take part in the school's gardening club to learn how to grow vegetables and fruit. The school has set up a cycle scheme and was the first in the county to install a biomass boiler.

Fifteen years ago families of children with profound learning difficulties started the Daybreak Charity. The charity was formed to create a place where their children could live independently when they could no longer be cared for at home. In 2011 these children (now adults) moved into their new home.

Featuring a contemporary design, Daybreak takes its inspiration from the National Forest with the use of timber and the retention of a mature tree that was on the site. Instead of chimneys, coloured sun tubes give the roof visual interest and help to naturally illuminate internal spaces

Green Footprints Challenge Awards 2011 Students from Stephenson College Art & Design department once again took on the exciting task of designing the Green Footprints Challenge Awards for 2011.

The Awards will be presented to the winners of each category.

The College ran a project in which the Award designs were the end result. Students taking part presented their ideas to NWLDC CEO Christine Fisher for feedback and further development. Each design entered was considered on its artistic qualities and the practicality of transforming the design into an Award. The impressive work of the winning student will be unveiled at the Green Footprints Challenge Awards.
