WorkTech North is a forum for all those involved in the future of work and the workplace as well as technology and innovation. It follows the format of its sister event in London and will launch at The Lowry, Salford Quays – adjacent to the site of the planned mediacity:uk.

The conference, on 29th June 2007, and a masterclass on Thursday 28th June will bring together leaders in their field from workplace futures, real estate and technology to examine what a media city is and what it means at a regional, national, and global level. It will also look at the implications of convergence between the worlds of technology and real estate driven by the trends that will change the nature of how and where work takes place.

How do people go about being creative? Can the working environment really enhance the creativity of your employees, and if so, how? The BBC, Microsoft, Herman Miller, forward thinking inc and TP Bennett set out to explore these challenges through a collaborative research project into the nature of Creativity at Work. Annie Leeson, project director, hosts an exploration of the results and the implications for organisations and their offices.

What is world class city-wide technology? What are leading cities building for advanced 21st Century networks? This session will examine the critical technologies for the city in the future as well as for tomorrow’s intelligent buildings. It will look at connecting workplaces of both big corporates and smaller independents. How can we share digital media in the 2011 workplace? What is a wireless city? What will people demand by 2020?

Hot Desking to Not Desking - a look at how new ways of working are shaping the buildings we work in. The types of spaces demanded by companies are changing. Increased collaboration and teamwork require different solutions to how and where ‘work’ can take place. Technology has released us from fixed allocated desks to allow us to explore new models for the ‘office’. Equally, environmental matters are affecting the size and form of the new office. The impact of these shifts will be discussed, together with visions for the city as people become increasingly mobile and independent.

Generation X and Y have different attitudes, approaches and comfort levels with technologies. How will a generation that is growing up with the internet inhabit digital space? How will people interact and collaborate in the metaverse and what will new technology bring? Philip Ross is an author and commentator on emerging technology and its impact on work and the workplace. With Jeremy Myerson, he has written a number of books on the future of work, including the Creative Office, the 21st Century Office and Space to Work. He will talk about the impact of new technology on work as we move towards the ‘synchronous society’.

Philip Vanhoutte is Managing Director of Plantronics EMEA, the world leader in headsets, and is an expert on new technologies for a mobile age. He will focus on the emergence of mobile communications and the challenges that new workstyles provide for personal productivity.

He will present a project that is incorporating digital media into everyday aspects of the public realm, making places that respond to their users, provide stories, information and services in preparation for the International Expo in 2008.

Michael Joroff is Senior Lecturer, MIT School of Architecture and Planning based at Harvard and is a global authority on technology cities. He will discuss how information and media technologies are woven into the design of new developments, creating a new urban fabric and will explore the new partnerships required among cities, developers and information and communication companies.

Frank Duffy is one of the global thought leaders on the future of the workplace. He was co-founder of DEGW and has authored a number of books including The New Office. He will reflect on the future of creative workspace and present a case study of the BBC’s Media Centre at White City in London – a workplace that was planned and designed by DEGW.

Clive Wilkinson is one of the top workplace architects in the world. Based in Los Angeles, he has designed innovative, creative spaces for companies such as TBWA/Chiat/Day, Google, JWT, Mother and FCB. He will present some of the inspirational spaces that people inhabit for work in the digital economy.

David Firth is a consultant, writer and conference speaker specialising in the psychology of human change, communication and in corporate cultures.

He is author of several best selling management books including Corporate Voodoo, The Corporate Fool and Smart Things to Know about People.
