FEBRUARY 2021

FRIENDSHIP BRIGADE Do you want to turn the dial on the coronavirus’ version of Groundhog’s Day? As COVID continues to dominate our days, many folks have recalled the 1993 movie and comedy-classic Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. In the movie, Murray’s character Phil Connors ends up in a time loop, forced to relive February 2nd – Groundhog’s Day – over and over again until he ‘sees the light’ and changes his ways. “What would you do if you were stuck in one place, and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?” he asks. But in the end, Connors becomes unstuck by discovering both the magic and the opportunity within his circumstance(s). For us, COVID reminds us that we all really and truly are in this together. That’s the opportunity. And the magic? It is in this - regardless of whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow this year - you can always brighten some one’s else day with friendship. Friendship is the light.

DIRECTORS COMMENTS: February is Heart Health Month. When we talk about heart health, we often provide information on healthy blood flow, pulse, and how the heart muscle functions. But this year we want to address All Matters of the Heart. Please join us via Zoom, on Tuesday, February 23rd at 1 p.m. as we discuss “All Matters of the Heart”. We will examine the mental, emotional, and physical ingredients of a healthy heart. The presentation will include lively small group breakout sessions and activities. Each person will leave with clear and easily implemented steps to improving their overall heart health—learning new diet and exercise trends, spicing up relationships, or expressing heartfelt gestures to our friends and family is just the beginning. Registration is available at Cityofsalem.net. Cost is $5, fee waivers are available. Request a waiver at connect50plus@cityofsalem.net – All the best to you and yours,

IT TAKES A LIFETIME TO GET THIS FIT Why is Strength Training After 50 Important?

Builds Muscle Mass: Being stronger means staying independent and strong for life’s daily activities such as carrying groceries, lifting grandchildren, or engaging in fun activities. Around the age of 30, muscles start to lose mass if the body is not active the mass will deteriorate. As you age, it’s easy to become sedentary, which causes the muscles to lose mass. Builds Bone Density: According to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury and death in older Americans. Strengthening the muscle and connective tissue that surround the bones makes one stronger and helps to prevent a fall from occurring. Decreases Body Fat: Maintaining a healthy weight is important when it comes to preventing many diseases that come with aging. Strength training helps to decrease the amount of body fat, both internally and externally. A healthy amount of body fat is both good and necessary. Too much, however, is not. Improves Mental Health: As one ages, you may go through several life changes making it normal to feel sad, stressed, or uneasy about these changes. Strength training has been shown to improve confidence and boost mental health. “Harvard Medical School reports that exercise helps lessen the incidence and the degree of clinical depression”. Improves Balance, Coordination, and Mobility: Aging tends to increase the loss of overall muscle strength, which support good balance. Lifting weights builds up muscle strength, which can improve overall balance and coordination.

Exercises: When completing the following exercises, it is important to stay within your own abilities. We are all at different fitness levels so please feel free to adjust your sets and repetitions where needed.

Overhead Press: 3 sets of 12 reps

Apple Quinoa Salad + Tahini Maple Dressing

Ingredients 1 cup quinoa (I used tri-color) 1 3/4 cup water 1 lemon, juice of 2 large apples, cored and diced (1 green + 1 red, or 2 same color) 1 1/2 cups grapes, sliced in half 1 celery rib, thinly sliced 1/4 cup raisins (or cranberries) 1/4 cup almonds (slivered or chopped) a few large mint leaves, julienned 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, or to taste salt & pepper, to taste Sweet Tahini Dressing 1/4 cup tahini 3 tablespoons water 1 – 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar, or to taste (optional)

ZOOM Healthy Living Lecture: Emotional Wellbeing During Times of Uncertainty: Thursday February 11th 5:30-6:30pm Join Mai Dotran, RN, BSN, Zumba and AFAA Group-Exercise Certified Instructor in a 1 hour Zoom Wellness Talk to share dialogue and knowledge on the impact of stress on the body and coping techniques to increase emotional well-being during times of uncertainty. From this session, you’ll have different tools to try and share, from J. Bryan Sexton, PhD, Director of Duke Center for Healthcare Safety and Quality from Duke University Health System. Cost: $5 please register online at egov.cityofsalem.net/Center50Plus/ Activity A special thank you to this year’s corporate sponsors Home Instead and Providence Health Plan.

Instructions Quinoa: Rinse your quinoa in a fine mesh sieve. In a medium size pot, add water and quinoa, bring to a boil. Cover reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove cover and let set 15 minutes, fluff with a fork. Dressing: While quinoa is cooking, prepare your dressing by combining ingredients in a small bowl. Mix well and set aside to let the flavors relax into each other. Add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time, too thin as needed. To thicken add more tahini. It should be thin enough to drizzle. Dressing serves four. Salad: Core and dice apples, top with lemon juice and toss gently (I did this right on the cutting board to not dirty up another bowl). Prepare the remaining ingredients. Add the apples, grapes, celery, raisins, almonds, mint leaves and cinnamon to the quinoa, mix well. Taste for flavor adding more cinnamon if you like.

RESPITE/BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER! There are many ways that we can boost our brain power. Try integrating the following tips into your everyday life: • Start each day out with a smile, which may help your memory all day long. • Pay attention-really concentrate on what you want to remember. • Engage in activities that are stimulating, new to you and challenging. • Use ALL your senses as much as possible, not just vision and hearing but also taste, touch and smell. • Keep your mind active. • Get enough sleep. • Set simple, realistic goals for yourself. • Try to avoid distractions such as excess noise and movement when trying to learn new things. • Limit multi-tasking or doing more than one thing at a time, as multi-tasking gets in the way of memory. • Practice relaxation techniques. Learn to live one day at a time. • Play board games; do crossword puzzles, word searches, Sudoku. • If you use the computer, use it to learn new things whether it be new games or researching topics of interest to you. • Exercise! • Eat nutritiously and drink more water daily. • Get outside. • Socialize with others regularly. It has been proven that this can have an extremely positive effect on your brain health. • Repeat information as you hear it. Write it down. Focus. • Expect to remember. You’re much more likely to remember things if you really expect to do so. • Enjoy life and always continue to grow!
