MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO This portfolio by Nwamaka Onyenokwe, illustrates a number of works produced in my 2+ years designing residential homes and the 4 years studying at Ryerson Uniersity’s CACB Accreditted Architectural Science program. These works range from CAD work to renderings and even photography; illustrating my passion for art , texture, materiality and forms as well as my final year thesis which was a year long project.

OFFICE RENO ECAD PROJECT TITLE: OFFICE RENOVATION CATEGORY: 3D MODELLING & VISUALIZATION DATE: NOVEMBER 2013 EXERT: The office studio space at ECAD Architects required a renovation, and a team had started working on the layout changes. I had just joined the team and was asked to produce a quick 3D model of the entranc/reception space, incoorporating the design changes that were desired. The wall separating the entrance from the reception was changed to glass andmirrors were added to the reception space to give the room a bigger feel. This project is still ongoing in its design phase and more design changes are yet to be made.

PROJECT TITLE: KIGALI LUXURY APARTMENTS CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT DATE: DECEMBER 2013 EXERT: This project is still ongoing. The client’s intention is to create a series of apartments; 2-bedrooms, 3-bedrooms and a penthouse. The site is sloped as Kigali is a mountainous region.

This corner lot has two elevation levels and therefore two street entrances. We have come up with one configuration where the general parking BEDROOM AREA lot remains on the north side which is the lower LIVING/DINING/KITCHEN AREA part of the building.The residents access their DECK AREA units from the parking lot, where the 3-bedroom INFINITY POOL units are on the outside and the 2-bedroom units are on the inner portion of the structure. A key feature that the client insisted on having is infinity pools at the front of each unit including the pent floor unit at the top. The glazed front facade allows for great views & the floors have been stepped back to follow the existing slopeResidential of the site. Development in Kigali, Rwanda for Mr. Serge and Mrs. Aline KAJEGUHAKWA.

PROJECT TITLE: KIGALI LUXURY APARTMENTS CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT EXERT: I’m working with a senior designer on this project, where we have met with the clients a few times to get an idea of how they want things layed out. Their intention is to have a pent floor span across the lower levels, elevated with the best views and deck.

PROJECT TITLE: THE SHIRES ESTATE CATEGORY: DEVELOPMENT LUXURY HOMES FOR FERNBROOK HOMES DATE: MARCH 2012 TILL DATE EXERT: At RN, we worked primarily with residential developers, with Fernbrook Homes being one of our major clients. This is one of the first projects I got to work on each stage of the design;from initial design ideas for a few product lines till the working drawing phase. I have selected a specific lot (LOT 16), where I worked on the site/grade plan, placing the house specifically in a position that allowed for good flow across the lot, this was also designed based on the town of Gwilimbury’s (Bradford, ON) By-Laws. I also was able to develop the lot specific working drawing, with the guidance of my project manager. I have also included a few site photo’s of this house under construction. This house is one out of about 50 or so homes that were designed by our team for Fernbrook Homes.

PROJECT TITLE: HENRY MOORE GALLERY CATEGORY: 3RD YEAR STUDIO PROJECT DATE: MAY 2009 EXERT: This year long studio project required a space to be created, which was to house the works of world renowned sculptor, Henry Moore. The premise behind my design was clear; to ngg bare barre allow the sturcture I create complement his work and highlight the beauty in it. THE GRAND STAIR This stair was a major element and focal structrural point within the museum. It comes in view as you enter the main entrance and guides you directly to the main gallery spaces and other areas of the building. It also takes you to the in house cafe and auditorium, and finally the main gallery space, where Henry Moores major sculptures are displayed to the public.

PROJECT TITLE: YARMOUK SPORTS CENTRE CATEGORY: 4TH YEAR THESIS PROJECT DATE: APRIL 2010 EXERT: The thesis topic, Architecture in a World of Conflict, was based along the Silk road; which is the worlds oldest land and sea trade route that spanned the Euro-Asia Diaspora. I selected Syria, Damascus to be an area of focus that dealt with the conflict of war in relation to it’s neighbour Iraq. In the process of developing my thesis, I created a character called Salim, which would help me produce an architectural solution to the conflict that himself and his family faced, in response to War, and being a displaced individual residing in foreign land. I developed a recreation centre for children in the area called Yarmouk that presently housed Iraqi refugees in Syria and is known to be “little Iraq” in Damascus. The building would then become a threshold space in Salim’s story where the war is his past, the sports centre is his transition space to his goal of freedom, peace and identity where he exerts his energy playing soccer which is his favourite sport.

This architectural element “the stair” became a representation of Salim’s threshold moment. It represents his transition into his new life in Syria. Several sketch models were created to study how the entrance/stair will work. This is one of the final sketch models created.

PROJECT TITLE: THE ROCKEFELLER CENTRE | IN THE SPIRIT OF FOA CATEGORY: 3RD YEAR THEORY GROUP PROJECT DATE: APRIL 2009 EXERT: This was a studio-style theory project, designed in the spirit of Foreign Office Architects. The task was to re-design the Rockefeller Centre using the principles of FOA, and in a sense enter into the character of the practice. The building’s shape and form was determined using the contextual qualities of the project’s surrounding and by outlining the major nodes and creating connecting lines, we extracted these lines to create hanging corridors that would link the now taller structures of the rockefeller centre. We proposed to still keep the major occupant spaces.

Existing separate functional spaces with public use strictly in the concourse level.

Proposed mixed use space, bringing concourse level spaces upwards and incorporating vertical green space as well.

PROJECT TITLE: URBAN REDEVELOPMENT OF FLORENTINE (PROPOSAL) CATEGORY: INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT (ITALY | ISREAL) DATE: JUNE - DECEMBER 2009 EXERT: A leftover space in the city of Tel Aviv, Florentine, was selected by my group to analize and redevelop; guided by Staff and students of the University of Tel Aviv for an Independet study. A space recognized for its small scale industries and rampant run down and abandoned buildings, we proposed to revive the mixed use nature that Florentine was known for. A community based structural fabric was to be established, with a mix-use commercial-residential progrmme setting, working with the existing structures by fine-tuning and strengthening the area to create a safer community. An addition or incorporation of green areas was also added to give a sense of wholesomeness and healthiness to the community.

PROJECT TITLE: FROZEN MOTION CATEGORY: FABRICATION USING DIGITAL TOOLS DATE: APRIL 2009 EXERT: This digital tools group project was designed to allow us practice using any digital medium of our choice, to create an installation within the architectural builing at Ryerson. My team decided to come up with a base module, which would be pieced together to form a fabric of some sort, that reflected daily activities within the building.

By adapting motion experienced within the building, we coined the term “frozen motion”, and intended to illustrate and materialize this phenomenon, The perfect location was chosen, the atrium, to portray this idea, as it is the central hub of the building and spans three floors.

FROZEN MOTION

The location chosen for placement of the fabric parallels the primary instrument of motion/circulation throughout the building: the stair.

This fabric stretches across the length of the stair. the sporadic pattern of movement made by the building’s occupants is reflected in the layout of the individual modules within the fabric.

The ondulating pattern of the fabric portrays the frequency of movement along the stair.

The movement within the building is detected by motion sensors that trigger tree different colored lights corresponding to the three major traffic areas. So as building users walk through the entrance/atrium, the lights are come on and it leads to further interractive behaviour in response to the sensor.
