THE COLLEGE

Founded by voters in the Bentonville and Rogers Public School Districts on August 15, 1989, NWACC began as "the college without walls" and NWACC has been one of the fastest growing higher education institutions in the state. It thrives today as a college that truly cares about the students, faculty, and staff and the community we serve. Our credit enrollment is over 11,000 students per year with another 5,000 students taking non-credit or personal enrichment courses.

ACADEMIC REGALIA AND SYMBOLS

REGALIA

Gowns were worn as early as the 12th century. Their primary purpose then was to protect the wearer against the elements. When accepted styles of dress began to change in the 16th century, people in the legal and medical professions as well as scholars in the universities retained the traditional dress of gowns and hoods. The origin of the cap is unclear. Styles and colors had no particular meaning until 1985 when an “Inter-collegiate Code” established design and color criteria. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The master’s gown has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist; the rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arch cut away. The gown may be worn open or closed. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves. It may be worn open or closed. The academic hood is the visual representation of the academic degrees. It is worn by faculty and staff with master’s and doctoral degrees. Graduates wearing colored regalia, other than black, are high school students who have completed their Associate Degree through the Early College Degree Completion Program.

HONOR CORDS, STOLES AND MEDALS

Students wearing gold cords are honor graduates. Summa cum laude graduates have a 4.0 grade point average on 24 or more credit hours taken at NWACC; magna cum laude graduates have earned a 3.5-3.9 grade point average.

Students wearing ebony & gold stoles are members of NWACC's chapter of Gamma Beta Phi, a national honor and service society. The stole bears the crest, which contains the watchwords of scholarship, service, and character. NWACC student members qualify with a 3.5 or higher grade point.

Students wearing gold stoles and blue and gold cords are members of the Beta Kappa Psi chapter of the International Honor Society of Phi Theta Kappa. NWACC student members qualify with a 3.5 or higher grade point.

Students wearing green and gold cords are members of Sigma Kappa Delta, a national English Honor Society for two-year colleges. SKD recognizes outstanding students of English language and literature. Members promote reading and literacy through on campus and community events and must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.3 in general scholarship to join.

Students wearing gold medals with white ribbon represent the NWACC Student Ambassador and Government Association. These students are NWACC student leaders and dedicate countless hours to NWACC students and community.

Students wearing green and white cords First Generation College Students.

Students wearing red, white and blue cords are current or veteran members of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

Students wearing sashes with flags on them are International Students. The flags on the sashes represent their home countries.

The LIFE (Learning Improvement Fun and Empowerment) medallion is worn by LIFE mentors and represents the countless hours of volunteer service to NWA high school students.

Students wearing gold and black medals with green ribbon have completed their Associate Degree through the Early College Degree Completion Program.

The Honors Program medallion represents the achievement of academic excellence in each student’s degree program at NWACC. To earn this medallion, with the Honors Program logo (curiosity, diversity, community) - inscribed on the back with the student’s name and year of graduation - and the blue ribbon, the Honors Program graduate must earn at least 12 credit hours with a “B” or better in their honors courses, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.

THE COLLEGE MACE

The Mace is a symbol of authority, often carried in academic processions. The NorthWest Arkansas Community College Mace was hand-carved and polished from walnut wood by Founding President Dr. Bob C. Burns in 1991.

7

POSTHUMOUS HONORARY ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Steve Dean Tosh served as NWACCs Chief of Police and retired after 14 years of service to the college. Chief Tosh oversaw the planning, organizing, implementing and directing of the law enforcement and public safety functions of the college’s Department of Public Safety.

Chief Tosh served in law enforcement for nearly 51 years. He began his career in 1970 at the age of 18 as a 911 operator for the Coffeyville, Kansas Police Department. At the age of 19, he became a certified police officer, the youngest ever recorded in the state of Kansas. For the next five years, he served as the city’s patrolman. From 1976 to 2002, Chief Tosh served the Kansas Highway Patrol, retiring as a sergeant. After his first retirement, he continued his public service career by becoming a City Commissioner for the city of Coffeyville, and in 2007, served as the city’s vice mayor. In April of 2007, he moved to Arkansas and began his career at NWACC as a patrolman. In 2013, he was promoted to sergeant and then to police chief in 2015.

Chief Tosh received numerous awards and achieved many accomplishments throughout his career. Some include receiving the Jaycees Outstanding Young Police Officer award and being recognized by the City of Coffeyville for removing small children from a burning house in 1972, as well as receiving Outstanding Staff Member by Arkansas Two Year Colleges in 2008.

Chief Tosh served in the Kansas National Guard from 1970 to 1976 in the 174th Service and Supply Battalion and ended his tour as a sergeant. He served as a member of the Kansas State Troopers Association and the Kansas Police officer Association throughout his law enforcement career in Kansas.

He was an active member of Arkansas Association of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies (AACLEA), an organization of college police departments that share information and strategy on keeping campuses safe and law abiding, and a member of the Arkansas Chiefs Association, which collaborates with the state through legislation.

For 51 years, Chief Tosh was married to his high school sweetheart and wife, Nisha, and had two daughters named Heather and Kristi, and one grandchild named Hannah. Heather is a graduate of Rogers State in Oklahoma, Kristi is a graduate of NWACC and the University of Arkansas, and Hannah is a graduate of Oklahoma State University.

In 2021, Chief Tosh retired from his position at NWACC. He shared these words: “I am very proud of my time at NWACC and making daily connections with students, staff and faculty. I don’t think I ever had a day that I didn't want to come to work. I’ve been very blessed to be able to work for NWACC and for the opportunity to serve the college,” said Chief Tosh.

On September 6, 2021, Steve Tosh passed away after a very courageous battle with cancer. Steve’s legacy over the course of his entire career, and the impact he made in this community and on this campus, will be cherished for many years to come. He was truly a servant leader and model example for us all.

NWACC DISTINGUISHED FACULTY

Brightwater Chef Instructor and Registered Dietitian Erin Szopiak has lived in a number of places in her life, including northern California, Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Louis and now Northwest Arkansas. Her interest in gardening and cooking with garden-fresh produce began with her Opa. As a child, she'd visit him and eat fresh strawberries, green beans, tomatoes, potatoes and pickled beets from his large garden, and bake homemade bread, and on special occasion, he'd make his famous European style torte.

Erin went on to get her bachelor's and master's in nutrition and dietetics and teach courses at Saint Louis University. She spent time working as a registered dietitian at a teaching hospital in St. Louis. While studying, she decided to broaden her knowledge in cooking healthy and delicious meals. She worked in various restaurants and learned about lobster, crab, mussels, pesce crudo and oysters, as well as how to pair Asian ingredients with hyper-local produce. She moved her way up the hot line and assisted in opening new restaurants as well.

In 2017, Erin was ready to have a more sustainable work schedule that would combine her interests in nutrition, cooking and teaching, and decided to join Brightwater as a registered dietitian chef instructor.

"I love interacting with Brightwater students. To see them have a shift in perspective, or have an 'aha' moment about what is being prepared or taught that day in class is very rewarding. I love seeing the students have fun in class. I especially enjoy seeing my culinary nutrition students surprised at how delicious healthy food can be," Erin says. "I also appreciate the Brightwater team. My fellow faculty and staff members make it worth it to come to work each day."

In her free time, Erin enjoys gardening, hiking, bike riding, running, yoga and anything active that one can do outside.

DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE

Roni (Veronica) Ramos is taking part in NWACC's BIEA accredited Bike Technician program. She relocated from Hot Springs, AR to attend this exciting program. Roni obtained her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in late 2019, shortly before the Pandemic. 2 years later, Roni decided to trust her intuition and made the move to Bentonville to work on bikes. Roni sees bike riding as an empowering experience that should be more accessible. She is striving to work her way up in the bike industry, in order to alleviate the inequities in bike ridership.
