IN CASE OF EMERGENCY SUCH AS FIRE OR FLOOD – ARE YOU PREPARED?

When disaster strikes, you may have to shelter in your home, or evacuate. In either scenario it is important to have an up-to-date emergency kit for you and your household.

Here are a list of items you should always have in your vehicle’s emergency kit.

Non-perishable food items: Energy/protein bars, canned or dehydrated meats and fruits

Water: Ensure you have water in stainless steel or plastic bottles, not glass Glass water bottles can break if frozen (Note: Plastic water bottles should be replaced every six months)

Emergency Blanket: You should have one thermal blanket for each household member. These small, compact blankets help to prevent hypothermia by reflecting heat back to your body, it can also be used as a reflective signal if search and rescue are trying to locate you.

Extra clothing and shoes: Having appropriate clothing and footwear is essential in any emergency. If you are not wearing proper clothing and footwear, you are more prone to injury. Also wearing wet shoes and clothing for an extended amount of time can lead to illness/infection and/or hypothermia.

First aid kit: adhesive tape, scissors, seat belt cutter, disinfectant wipes, non latex gloves, gauze, paper and pen, needle and thread, tweezers, pain relievers (Aspirin can help prevent/delay heart attack), antibiotic ointment, super glue (only in an emergencysuperglue can be used as skin adhesive to stop bleeding)

Tools & equipment: Seatbelt cutter, multitool with a blade, Snowbrush, Ice scraper and a small shovel, wind-up flashlight or lantern, jack, and spare tire (if applicable - Ensure your lug lock key is easy to find), jumper cables, tow rope.

Candles and matches, a box of crayons (crayons can be used as candles in an emergency and will burn for approximately 30 minutes each)

Whistle and flare: In case you need to attract attention. Roadmaps and a printout of your emergency plan and important personal documents.

You should ensure that all important prescription medication and medical devices and important documents are easily accessible in case of emergency evacuation.
