Parent-Child Mother Goose

A program for parents and their babies (from birth to 12 months), the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program® focuses on the pleasure and power of learning rhymes, songs and stories. Sessions for Winter 2011: • Thursdays, 9:15am - 10:15am, January 20th - March 24th • Thursdays, 10:45am - 11:45am, January 20th - March 24th Free; registration required. To register, call the children’s department at 604-984-0286. Registration opens Thursday, January 6th. Participants may register for one session only. These programs are made possible by grants from WECAN North Shore Early Childhood Network, and the Public Library Services Branch.

Red Cedar Book Club Author Visit with Sarah Ellis

Thursday, January 20th, 3:45pm - 4:30pm Kids in grades 4 to 7 are invited to come meet author Sarah Ellis at this Red Cedar Book Club event at Lynn Valley Main Library. Ellis is nominated for a Red Cedar Book Award for her work of fiction, Days of Toil and Tears. Each year, students get to decide who will get the Red Cedar Book Award by voting for best fiction and information books. Come in to Lynn Valley Main Library any time after Christmas to pick up your reading log to get started reading nominated titles. Free; no registration required.

Chamber West Concert

Thursday, January 13th, 7:00pm- 8:30pm Join the Chamber West Woodwind Quintet and North Shore’s Double Reed Ensemble for a concert at the Library. The quintet and the double reed ensemble will play works by Dvorak, Gershwin, Joplin, Malcom Arnold, The Beatles, and others. Free; no registration required.

Red Cedar Book Club at Parkgate Branch Library

Friday, January 14th and Friday, January 28th, 3:45pm - 4:30pm A book club for kids in grades 4 - 7. This group meets twice a month on Fridays to discuss titles nominated for the 2010/2011 Red Cedar Book Award. Read great books and vote for your favourite in April. Snacks and lots of fun activities provided! Free; no registration required.

Third Wednesday of each month, 7:00pm – 8:45pm Vibrant street-level discussions moderated by Mark Battersby, PhD. January 19th’s session addresses the topic of multiculturalism. Some say that multiculturalism is over and that we should build Canadian society around the concept of citizenship. What do you think? English Conversation Corner
