NEWS IN BRIEF

WIZO UK Leeds Lunch

Rebecca Sieff WIZO recently held a well-attended charitable lunch, with jewellery expert Susan Rumfitt (of Antiques Roadshow fame) delivering an illustrated presentation on the history of Tiffany & Co. Jewellery. The guest of honour was Ruth Leviten.

The event successfully raised a substantial sum in support of WIZO UK’s Emergency Appeal.

As Israel faces one of its most difficult periods in recent memory, WIZO has moved swiftly to meet the needs of thousands of families, children, and older people overwhelmed by fear, trauma, and loss. The funds raised at this event will help address the psychological toll of war on Israeli society including trauma counselling, safe-space shelters, and vital community centres.

In these challenging times, WIZO’s essential programmes across Israel are under unprecedented pressure and it’s only through your support and generosity that the organisation can continue to provide them, ensuring those in need feel safe and supported as they begin to heal.

Yad Vashem Database

After 70 years of intensive research, the names of five million of the estimated six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust have been identified and documented by Yad Vashem – Israel’s world Holocaust remembrance centre.

Unfortunately, the names of the remaining one million victims will probably never be known, Yad Vashem said, although new technologies like AI and machine learning may make it possible for as many as 250,000 more to be uncovered.

The global campaign to recover names has relied heavily on partnerships with Jewish communities, archives, genealogical societies, and research institutions worldwide. A cornerstone of the effort is its Pages of Testimony project — one-page memorial forms filled out by survivors, relatives, and friends. To date, 2.8 million names have been collected through these pages, written in more than 20 languages.

Recognition for GSAL

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has been recognised by Alps Education as being in the top 10% of schools and colleges nationally for student progress at A-level in 2025.

This exceptional recognition celebrates the value-added progress made by GSAL students between their GCSE and A-level results. It reflects not only the hard work, ambition, and resilience of its students, but also the dedication and expertise of its colleagues in supporting every learner to achieve their full potential.

The Alps analysis compares progress data across thousands of schools and colleges nationwide. Earning a place in the top decile is a mark of outstanding performance –demonstrating that GSAL students consistently achieve grades significantly higher than those predicted from their GCSE starting points.

Senior Deputy Head, Academic, Orla Weaver, said: “We are incredibly proud of this recognition. It is a testament to our students’ commitment to their studies and to the highquality teaching and pastoral care provided at GSAL. Our goal is always to help every student exceed expectations – academically and personally – and this award highlights that success.”

Battle-Ready

For nearly 30 years, the Royal Armouries Museum has been a dynamic hub of learning and curiosity bringing the past to life. But its future is set to be even more exciting!

Since opening its doors in March 1996, the Royal Armouries Museum has been a jewel in Leeds' cultural crown. Housing the United Kingdom's national collection of arms and armour – one of the largest collections of its kind in the world – this purpose-built museum at Clarence Dock has welcomed millions of visitors to explore centuries of military history and craftsmanship.

The museum is custodian of three national collections: arms and armour, artillery, and firearms, alongside its role as keeper of Tower of London history. But far from being just a repository of historical artefacts, the Royal Armouries has always been a living, breathing institution.

The Armouries building was revolutionary in its approach. Rather than simply displaying objects behind glass, it was built to tell stories – through combat demonstrations, performances, audio-visual presentations, and interactive technology that brings history to life. The museum even includes a tiltyard for demonstrations of jousting and other mounted martial sports, complete with stables, an aviary, and workshops for the repair of historic arms and armour.

The museum's five themed galleries – War, Tournament, Hunting, Oriental, and Self Defence – house 6,000 objects in permanent displays. The spectacular Hall of Steel, a giant staircase adorned with trophy displays, pays homage to the Tower Armouries displays of the 17th century.

Nearly three decades after opening, the Royal Armouries is embarking on its most ambitious chapter yet. The Armouries 700 Masterplan – named to mark over 700 years since the founding of the original collection – is a 10-year programme of refurbishment and redevelopment that will transform the museum and its surrounding area.

New facilities will include a dedicated

centre for learning, a special exhibitions gallery, and improved visitor amenities. A new café bar will open onto Armouries Square, helping to highlight it as a vibrant public space. A new dockside entrance will improve connections to the city centre, while conservation facilities, the library, and archive will be extended and enhanced. The new Special Exhibitions Gallery will host blockbuster exhibitions developed in partnership with cultural institutions from around the world.

Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum, the only international travelling exhibition developed in collaboration with the Colosseum in Rome, opened in summer 2025 and has already proved hugely popular. Through life-size reconstructions, interactive exhibits, multimedia devices, and immersive environments, visitors are transported back to ancient Rome to experience the life of the heroes of the arena.

The Armouries 700 programme also includes a wide-reaching programme of research, collaboration, and co-creation to tell the stories that matter today. But perhaps most importantly, it will create an enormous sense of civic and national pride. Through this ambitious development, the museum is being reimagined for a new era – one focused on building a happier and more peaceful future through understanding our shared history.

For Leeds, this represents not just the enhancement of a world-class museum, but the continued evolution of our waterfront as a premier cultural destination. The Royal Armouries has been at the forefront of this transformation since 1996, and with Armouries 700, it's set to lead the way for decades to come.

We caught up with the new Catering and Events Manager at LJWB's Leeds Kosher Kitchen (LKK), Cara Robinson.

Hi Cara! Can you tell us a bit about your background and what brought you to LKK?

Hi! I actually come from a care background – I started out managing care homes before moving into operations for hotels and country parks. I’ve always loved creating welcoming spaces where people feel looked after and valued. I joined LJWB as part of the HQ admin team, and when the opportunity came up to move across to LKK as catering and events manager, it felt like the perfect next step. It combines my passion for hospitality, food, and people all within a community I’m proud to be part of.

What excites you most about this role?

The connection with people – I love chatting to our regulars! Some come every week, and it’s lovely to catch up and make sure they’re getting food they enjoy. I also really enjoy meeting new customers and developing what we offer so there’s always something fresh to look forward to. Being able to provide good, hearty kosher food for the community feels really special. It’s about so much more, it’s about care and connection.

How would you describe your vision for LKK?

My vision is for LKK to be the one-stop shop for kosher food in the community – a place where you can find everything you need, whether that’s a Friday night meal, family tray bake dinners, frozen meals, or enjoying our daily deal. We also run pop-up meaty brunches and evening restaurant nights, and we prepare food for Gourmet Deli too. I want people to think of LKK as warm, modern, full of life, and somewhere that brings everyone together over great food and a welcoming atmosphere.

How does the community-focused status of LKK shape your strategy? It shapes everything we do. Because LKK exists for the community, we always want people to feel heard, valued, and welcome whether they’re popping in for lunch, picking up a meal, or hosting a big function. Every event and every visit should feel special. We want people to leave smiling, knowing they’ve had a great experience.

Any profits generated by LKK will ultimately be donated back to LJWB, which makes our mission so much more important; by choosing us, you’re choosing to support our community for the longer term.

What can customers look forward to?

We’ll be keeping all the favourites people already love – including our famous fish and chips – but I’m also planning to introduce a few new dishes and some seasonal specials. We’re really proud to be offering a traditional Shabbat meal on Friday lunch times, with chicken soup and kneidlach, followed by a roast chicken main course.

Looking ahead, I’m also keen to expand our range in Gourmet, offering even more ready meals, as well as convenient deli pots. And of course, there’ll be plenty of fresh, homemade options for grab-and-go at the MAZCC, plus new homemade, seasonal sweet treats to enjoy with your coffee. There’s lots to look forward to!

You’ll also be catering events –how do you work with families or organisations to tailor menus and experiences to their needs?

I always start with a cup of tea and a chat. It’s about listening – finding out what they’re celebrating, who’s coming, any dietary needs, the budget, and what kind of feel they want. From there, we build a menu together that fits perfectly. I want people to feel relaxed and confident that we’ll get it just right for them. I’m thrilled that Sean Gobbi, formerly of Moor Allerton Golf Club, is joining the LKK team as our external catering partner. Operating under our kosher licence as

“Sean@the Kosher Kitchen” he’ll be bringing his passion and creativity to simchas and special events across Yorkshire make every celebration extra special.

Alongside that, we’re looking at themed food days, afternoon teas, and collaborations with local groups. The goal is to make the MAZCC an even more vibrant, social place.

How would you like the community to support this new chapter?

Just come and be part of it! Pop in for lunch, try something new, tell us what you think –we really want to hear from everyone. LKK is here for the community, and the more people get involved, the stronger it becomes. Your visits, purchases, feedback, and word of mouth make all the difference.

SEASON’S GREETINGS

Lord Mayor, Councillor Dan Cohen, shares a look at community care, winter festivities, and gratitude for local support.

Welcome to my December column in JLife. Just writing this makes me shudder a little, not only are we coming so quickly to the end of 2025, but I’m already six months into my Lord Mayoral year, with the end now in sight (also in sight is my re-election campaign for May 2026, more on that in a future piece).

In recent weeks I’ve had several residents contact me about parking outside schools at pick up and drop off times. As the weather turns ever more wintry and the days are darker and colder, there’s an increase in problem parking, as everyone tries to get as near the school gate as possible. It’s a minority for sure, but some parking recently has really been poor, and worse than that it’s been really quite dangerous, both for the young people being dropped off and for other pedestrians.

Can I please urge that anyone and everyone picking up or dropping off for school to please double down on your effort to park not just lawfully but as considerately as possible. Could I also urge that if you spot someone you know not parking considerately (or worse) that you might gently challenge them on this (in my

experience a gentle comment from a friend goes further than any other approach). I know everyone who lives near schools will be hugely grateful for anything done to encourage everyone to be as considerate as we would want people to be when they park near us.

Winter being upon us does have a silver lining of course – it’s almost Chanukah and Christmas time (my absolute favourite time of the year). As always Santa himself will be visiting Alwoodley for a pre-Christmas treat for Alwoodleyans young and old.

Unfortunately as Santa is so busy this year he’s only with us for this shorter visit, but he will be at the ACA Christmas Craft Fair on 14th December from 10am to 12.30pm with presents for all who come to see him and as ever, thanks to a grant from myself, Lyn, and Neil – my fantastic ward colleagues – there’s no charge to anyone coming to visit for a gift.

14th December is also the first night of Chanukah, kicking off a week of events and parties across the city. If you’re interested in joining one, do get in touch with me for more information.

I’ve had to get into the Christmas spirit

more than usual this year, with my Lord Mayor’s hat on. My Christmas message to Leeds will be coming out in December and (I do sincerely apologise for this in advance) thanks to my very talented brother Elliot, the Lord Mayor’s charity Christmas song ‘It Smells Like Christmas’ will hopefully be available for all to enjoy (or avoid) – if you like it, do please make a donation to my Lord Mayors charity… and if you don’t, make a bigger donation and it might just disappear (at the very least it’s the first new Cohen Brothers song in about 25 years).

Finally for this month and indeed this year, it only remains for me to thank each and every Alwoodley resident for being the best bunch of residents any councillor could hope for, your warm messages of support and constant kindness make serving as your councillor an immense honour and privilege and one that I don’t take for granted – even for a moment.

May I wish everybody a Happy Chanukah, a Merry Christmas, and a peaceful and prosperous 2026.

Canada’s Yukon territory is an unspoiled land of breathtaking proportion and a destination of unmistakable beauty.

When you consider Canada, a plethora of iconic images come to mind. Perhaps foremost are its majestic mountains and emerald green lakes but consider for a moment experiencing these beautiful vistas away from the bustling tourist trails and combining them with historic ‘gold rush’ locations, First Nations culture, the ethereal display of the Northern Lights, and an unimaginable array of wildlife. Sitting in the northwest corner of Canada, adjacent

to the US state of Alaska, Yukon is one of North America’s most impressive wilderness destinations. If you have an adventurer’s spirit, a love of nature, and a passion for exploration, Yukon should be at the top of your holiday destination list.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES

Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon and is so much more than simply your arrival gateway. Named the Wilderness City, it’s nestled on the banks of the Yukon River and is surrounded by rugged mountains and pristine lakes. You can hike, bike, or jog the vast network of trails, many of which follow the shores of the river. Shipyards Park hosts a weekly Farmers Market, where you can find local products as well as music and other performances. Watch for salmon at the Fishladder, and don’t forget to visit

the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site which is perhaps Whitehorse’s most famous attraction. Kayakers dip their paddles upstream for white-water fun. Those with calmer tastes canoe downstream and the truly adventurous float this mighty waterway all the way to Dawson City.

Dawson City, a National Historic Site, has maintained a charm reminiscent of the Klondike Gold Rush. The discovery of gold in 1897 led to one of the greatest gold rushes in history. By 1898, Dawson City was one of the biggest cities north of San Francisco, with a population of 40,000. It was nicknamed ‘the Paris of the North’ and boasted dance halls, theatres, and hotels, along with the latest fashions from Paris. Today you can hop aboard the Klondike Spirit Paddle wheeler for a ride on the Yukon River, visit the Dawson City Museum to view restored

Klondike Mines Railway locomotives, and kick up your heels at Diamond Tooth Gerties dance hall. You must include a trip to Claim #6 on Bonanza Creek where the world’s greatest gold rush started and step back in time and try your luck gold-panning at Claim 33, before visiting Dredge No. 4 which showcases the transition from manual panning to machine searching.

THE WILDERNESS IS WAITING

A staggering 80% of Yukon is pristine wilderness. It’s home to Mount Logan, Canada’s highest mountain, and Kluane National Park which is one of the world’s largest non-polar icefields and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But they’re just the start of its overall attraction. Hiking and biking are everyday pursuits when exploring the parks of Kluane, Tombstone, Herschel Island, Chilkoot, Ivvavik, and Fishing Branch. The famous Alsek, Tatchenshini, Snake, Wind, Firth, and Yukon Rivers and countless crystal-clear lakes provide for leisurely kayaking, sailing, or canoeing.

WILD ABOUT WILDLIFE

The statistics are quite staggering! Roughly the size of France, Yukon has a tiny population of just 40,000 people, the majority of whom are concentrated around the largest city of Whitehorse. Compare this to its non-human counterparts: 160,000 caribou, 70,000 moose, 22,000 mountain sheep, 7,000 grizzly bears, 10,000 black bears, and over 250 species of birds, and it brings into perspective how sensational it is for wildlife watching. Home to three national parks, six territorial parks, and four Canadian Heritage Rivers, Yukon’s unique geographic landscape and varied eco-systems allow its wildlife to thrive with little threat.

NATURE’S MAGICAL SHOW

There are very few natural wonders which create the spine-tingling feeling and magical awe you encounter when witnessing Aurora Borealis. Also known as the Northern Lights, the dense dark night skies created by Yukon’s remote setting provide the perfect conditions

for some of the most dramatic undulating ribbons of green, blue, and red light. Although dependent on weather conditions and cloud cover, the best chance of dramatic aurora viewing is between autumn and spring.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE

The Yukon may be famous for its gold rush history, stunning wilderness, and phenomenal aurora viewing opportunities, but there’s also a rich and diverse Indigenous culture that visitors can immerse themselves into. Some of the earliest evidence of the presence of humans in North America, more than 12,000 years ago, was uncovered in the Yukon. Through historic sites, vibrant celebrations, and interesting locals, visitors can experience cultures dating back untold centuries and connect with First Nations people across the territory.

SEE FOR YOURSELF

Embark on an unforgettable journey through Yukon, on our Complete Yukon fly drive holiday. Prices start at £3,229 per person, including flights, car rental, and

14 nights’ accommodation. Highlights include Dawson City, Tombstone Territorial Park, Kluane National Park, Keno City, Marsh Lake, Watson Lake, Carmacks, and Whitehorse.

Park Life

From a royal hunting ground to one of Leeds' most beloved green spaces, we consider the cultural history and future of Roundhay Park.

Spanning 700 acres of rolling hills, ancient woodland, and tranquil lakes, Roundhay Park stands as one of Europe's largest urban parks. Nearly a million people visit each year, drawn by the combination of natural beauty, rich history, and world-class entertainment that has seen the park become one of Leeds' most cherished assets.

Roundhay's story begins nearly a thousand years ago when William the Conqueror rewarded Norman baron Ilbert de Lacy with land in what would become this prized parkland. The name itself – meaning 'round enclosure' – hints at its origins, when peasants dug an enormous enclosure, removing a quarter of a million tonnes of earth to create a hunting ground for royalty.

King John famously enjoyed a lavish threeday hunt here in 1212 with 200 hunting dogs. By 1599, the deer were hunted to extinction, and the land's fortunes changed. Monks from nearby Kirkstall Abbey had already been mining iron since 1160 and coal mining followed, continuing until 1628.

When Charles I sold the park to settle his debts, it eventually passed to two Quaker businessmen in 1803. Thomas Nicholson acquired the northern 700 acres, transforming the scarred landscape into a place of beauty. He commissioned veteran soldiers from Waterloo to create the park's centrepiece – Waterloo Lake – effectively covering the disfigured mining land. His Greek revival mansion, built around 1812, still overlooks these grounds.

On 19th September 1872, Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria, officially opened Roundhay to the public. Leeds Corporation,

led by Mayor Sir John Barran, had secured its purchase, ensuring this magnificent space would belong to the people.

Today's Roundhay offers something for everyone. Five specialist gardens grace the grounds, including the Monet Garden –inspired by Claude Monet's Giverny – and the Alhambra Garden, alongside four prizewinning Chelsea Flower Show entries. A new sculpture trail featuring eight intricately carved beech trees by local artist Shane Green winds through Ram Wood, celebrating the park's wildlife.

The park also features impressive recreational facilities including tennis courts, a golf course, bowling greens, playgrounds, a skate park, and of course the famous cricket ground in the arena. Waterloo Lake attracts anglers and birdwatchers alike, while Upper Lake serves as a nature conservation area. The Victorian Castle Folly remains a peaceful contemplation spot overlooking the water.

Tropical World, housed near The Mansion's former walled kitchen garden, delights families with its collection of crocodiles, lemurs, butterflies, and the ever-popular meerkats. The Lakeside Café and Mansion's Garden Room Café are great places to stop for refreshments.

Roundhay's place in cultural history was cemented with its transformation into a premier concert venue. The 1980s proved golden years, with the Rolling Stones, Genesis, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and U2 all performing in the park. These weren't just concerts – they were demonstrations that Leeds could compete with world-famous venues.

Dr Peter Mills from Leeds Beckett University, an expert in the park's musical heritage, notes the changing attitudes: “When the Rolling Stones came in 1982, they met resistance. By the time Michael Jackson and Madonna appeared, Leeds embraced the idea that it deserved these concerts. It changed how the city viewed itself – as somewhere worth visiting, with Roundhay Park rivalling any venue worldwide. It's such a tremendous space. If an act is prepared to go the extra mile, there's no better outdoor venue in the UK.”

After the 1980s boom, concerts became sporadic. Robbie Williams brought the excitement back in 2006 with two shows, followed by Ed Sheeran's sell-out performances to 80,000 fans in 2019. Staging such events in the park does present challenges – unlike purpose-built stadiums, and the capacity for such events reduced somewhat. Leeds City Council recently approved capacity for crowds back up to 69,999, positioning Roundhay to attract major international acts while boosting the local economy.

Roundhay's festival future looks bright. The new Roundhay Festival launches in summer 2026, with Lewis Capaldi confirmed as the first headliner for 4th July. The Scottish singer, known for hits including 'Before You Go' and 'Pointless', represents a new generation of music stars following in the footsteps of legends. Beyond music, the park hosts triathlon events annually, along with food festivals, fun fairs, and circuses.

From William the Conqueror's hunting preserve to a Victorian pleasure park and now a world-class events venue, Roundhay Park continues to evolve whilst honouring its rich heritage. As it approaches its 153rd year as a public space, this Leeds treasure remains what Thomas Nicholson envisioned – a place of beauty, belonging not to kings, but to everyone.

Leeds’ best pizzas are now on Street Lane! New York-style pizzeria with a range of pizzas, wings, fries, and mozzarella dippers. The name of Marlow’s fish and chip shop and restaurant on Street Lane has been a local institution since 1952 with a few different editions over the years. Its latest incarnation is under Arabaab Munir (known as Paddy) and his partner Jenade Yamin and re-opened its doors in late September. In a short time, Marlow’s has reclaimed its place as a local favourite – not just for its freshly cooked fish and perfectly crispy batter, but for the welcoming ambiance and Paddy’s eagerness to forge connections within the neighbourhood and community.

How this latest resurrection of Marlow's came about is a somewhat unlikely story. Paddy has previous experience in hospitality but also an entrepreneurial spirit with a varied career including a successful construction business and financial services portfolio.

When he took on the lease at Street Lane he had a different vision in mind: "Initially, the idea was a kitchen or bathroom showroom to supplement my construction business," he explains. "But we already have a showroom over Castleford way, so another one seemed a bit pointless."

After looking into the location's rich history – Marlow's, The Fisherman's Lodge, and other iterations – the decision was made: "We just thought it made sense and went with the flow. " Then came six weeks of intensive renovation, with Paddy designing and overseeing every detail himself: "I'm a designer and I've been in construction for

A beloved Street Lane stalwart returns with a new lease of life and a kosher certification.

years. So, I had a vision and made it happen."

Marlow’s restaurant space comfortably seats 40 but can accommodate up to 100 people for special occasions. The aim of the redesign was simple: "I wanted to give it a homely feel. I thought, ‘what would I want to feel if I came into a place like this?’” says Paddy. "We put a lot of work in to get it to where it is, and ultimately, it just works. Everyone loves it!"

Under Paddy’s stewardship, Marlow’s has wasted no time cultivating connection with the Jewish community: “Rabbi Gilbert from the Leeds Beth Din randomly popped in and asked what we were doing. When I explained our plans, he said: 'Since the 70s, we've not had a decent kosher fish and chips place. Would you consider doing a kosher section?'"

Paddy says it was a no-brainer: "I'm all about community. I thought, it's a nice thing to do to get everyone together. I didn’t initially realise all that kosher preparation entails – the separate utensils and fryers and specific suppliers – but If I've committed to something, I'm going to see it through, doesn't matter what the cost is."

Marlow's now operates with a full separate kosher section supervised by a Shomer. The regular batter has been approved, and the menu includes matzo meal options, kosher gravies, and mushy peas.

Paddy makes a point of sourcing from local suppliers, particularly the nearby Street Lane Bakery: "I could easily save a bit of money and go to big cash and carries, but it defeats the objective of having a small, cohesive community. And their bread and desserts are so good!"

Plans are already in motion for community events utilising a huge TV in the restaurant area. Wednesday movie nights for kids, Sunday bingo with prizes like a month

of free fish and chips, and during major sporting events like the World Cup, outdoor beer gardens and pop-up stands.

Of course, Paddy’s commitment to excellence shines through with the food. He personally developed all the recipes, taking time to perfect everything before opening: "First impressions last. If the quality’s not there, then who's going to come back?"

Its not just fish and chips either, for those not requiring kosher, there’s an array of delicious dishes using halal meat. And for allergy sufferers, plenty of vegan and gluten free choices.

A couple of months in, Paddy says Marlow's is still in its honeymoon period, but the vision is clear and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with customers praising the delicious fish and chips. Private bookings are already coming in – including a 60-person birthday party scheduled for January.

At the heart of Marlow's ethos is the authentic desire to bring people together: "We're a multi-national, multi-faith society, and it's a great thing when we step up to help each other out. That's all we want – to help each other and grow stronger and stronger."

Love Me Dough

We talk to Joel Gordon, Manager of Street Lane Bakery, Leeds' hidden gem for artisan baking.

Tucked away just off Street Lane, a small bakery has been quietly building a reputation that spreads far and wide. Street Lane Bakery, run by Joel Gordon for the past three years, now has customers making pilgrimages from Hull, Manchester, and even Leicester.

"Without a doubt, we make the best bagels in the country," Joel says with justified confidence. "People come from miles around, often buying dozens at a time to stick in their freezers so they never have to be without."

Since taking over the bakery, Joel has overseen significant changes. The space has been transformed from what he describes as feeling: "a bit like a port-a-cabin" into a dedicated café and shop that's "very homely and rustic, and just a lovely place to have a coffee and a sandwich or a salad or a cup of soup."

The changes are more than just aesthetic. The bakery has invested heavily in equipment: "We've got brand new deck ovens, a new convection oven, and an incredible bagel machine that's come all the way from New York," Joel explains. "We are moving with the times, let me tell you."

The bakery now produces eight different types of bagels – all vegan – including chilli, everything, onion, and cinnamon and raisin varieties, alongside the classics: sesame seed, poppy seed, and plain. There's also a special stone-baked bagel, crisped

directly on the oven base for extra texture. Beyond bagels, the bakery’s range of products has expanded considerably: "We do three varieties of rye bread, sourdoughs, and traditional plaited challahs," Joel says. "In the shop itself, we do a whole range of filled bagels, croissants, toasties and soup – we're going to be introducing baked potatoes for the winter. We have wonderful coffee and bountiful salads too."

The abundant confectionery range is particularly impressive: "We're very famous for our large donuts – they're enormous and traditional," Joel points out. The bakery’s shelves are packed with traditional treats like cinnamon slices, currant slices, fruit pies, brownies, and flapjacks: "We have to very carefully negotiate the shelving and storage units to we make everything fit," he laughs. "But we just about manage to squeeze it all in."

The café has become a destination in its own right: "It's a great place to come and sit for a while, and it's a great place to work," says Joel.

Street Lane Bakery has adapted to modern demands while maintaining its traditional approach. The bakery is available on Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat, with coverage across Leeds. "If there are any areas that aren't covered, we can arrange delivery with a courier," Joel adds.

Corporate catering has become another growing element: "If offices want to treat their staff, we do a bagel bundle: a dozen bagels, large packet of smoked salmon, and two packets of cream cheese. It's a wonderful way to put a smile on everybody's face."

The bakery also supplies other high-end cafés and offers platters for events – mini bagels, sandwiches, desserts, and crudités: "Anywhere they're selling really top-quality bagels, they have to be coming from us, because ours are the best," he states matterof-factly.

Being tucked away from street view in the synagogue grounds could be seen as a disadvantage, but Joel has embraced it: "We've got some new signage – there's a huge banner on Street Lane with an enormous arrow pointing to the entrance.

"We're a bit of a hidden gem. The Jewish community of course know we are here, but the word is getting out among the wider community. Once people have been, they tend to come back again and again."

That repeat business is evident in the queues that form on Saturday evenings during winter months, when the bakery opens from 8pm to midnight: "While the bakers are baking for Sunday morning, we can be open so people can get fresh bagels still warm. You'd be amazed – we have queues out the door at 11pm on a Saturday night."

Looking to the future, the business isn’t resting on resting on its laurels: "At the moment we're looking at updating our confectionery offer – a lot of new ideas and new products in the pipeline," Joel teases. "It's slightly too early to reveal what they are just yet, but it's going to be an exciting new range alongside our old favourites."

REMEMBERING TOGETHER

Leeds Leads Against Antisemitism (LLAA) recently held the memorial for the October 7th massacre.

On a sunny October day, over 800 people attended – people of all religions and none – to stand hand in hand remembering the Nova music festival massacre in 2023.

The news that the remaining hostages were to be released imminently was welcomed by everyone present and celebrated at the end of the event with music and dancing.

Speakers included Mark Adlestone from the Manchester Jewish community who spoke about the terror attack on Yom Kippur, and how Manchester and Leeds stand as one. Haya Langerman from The Hostages Forum described the events of October 7th and the work her organisation does. Also speaking were Gill Proctor and Des Starritt representing Christians United for Israel and a prayer and poems were read out by LLAA volunteers.

Sadly, Catherine Perez from We Believe in Israel was meant to join the vigil but endured a nasty incident in London and had to cancel.

LLAA Co-Chair, Debbie Addlestone, read Catherine’s speech in her absence.

The names of all the remaining hostages were read out before a two-minute silence, impeccably preserved by all. Rabbi Alby Chait then blew the shofar with the sound echoing around Millenium Square.

Debbie Addlestone said: “We are overwhelmed with the support of the community and our allies. The vigil was simultaneously emotional, heartbreaking, and uplifting. We are very grateful to all of our speakers and singers and would like to wish Catherine Perez a speedy recovery from her awful experience at Kings Cross, when she was assaulted by a pro-Palestinian protester as she tried to catch her train to Leeds.”

The event ended with Rabbi Chait reading a prayer followed by the national anthems, before 20 minutes of Israeli dancing for the release of the hostages left everyone in good spirits.

We are often asked for advice on the best items to collect so we have put together some ideas to consider when starting a collection. First of all, you should always collect what you like and what excites you the most –whether you gather artwork, ceramics, toys, records, or anything else, you need to enjoy the process.

Try to learn about your subject before you buy by visiting dealers, galleries, and auction rooms and learn to understand market values, costs, and popularity.

Decide whether you want to collect for pleasure, investment, historical preservation, or community support. Set a budget that is

As we light the candles for Chanukah and embrace the festive party season, there’s a welcome sense of calm and balance not only in our homes but also in the property market itself. For once, no big news really is good news.

Across the UK, house prices have seen modest growth of around 2 to 4% so far this year. With inflation sitting at roughly 3.8%, that means real prices are effectively holding steady rather than soaring or slipping. After years of post-COVID turbulence, this period of stability is a breath of fresh air.

A balanced market benefits everyone. Buyers can take their time, make considered choices, and avoid the pressure of frantic

within your means, but don’t always count on your collection rising in value. Fashions change often and just because you love your items, it doesn’t mean that your children will! It is always wise to document your collection both for security and ease of sale in the future so make sure to keep hold of the original packaging and receipts, and a photographic record is always advisable. The care and display of your items is also important as different materials need different environments. Temperature and humidity can affect paintings, and direct light can fade colours so display your collection where you can enjoy it and it will

provide good discussions with visitors and other collectors.

Collecting is both a personal journey and a conversation with history. A collection of items can become a living story and often leads to making new friends. Share what you collect with like-minded people, and you’ll be sure to enjoy the process so much more.

bidding wars. Sellers, too, can plan their next steps with confidence, knowing there are motivated buyers ready to move. For agents, it’s a return to what they do best, offering expert advice, service, and local insight instead of reacting to constant market swings.

Of course, one eye remains on the horizon. The upcoming Autumn Budget may bring adjustments to stamp duty, inheritance tax, or landlord taxation – all factors that could influence confidence. But for now, there’s cautious optimism that any changes will be measured rather than disruptive.

In the North especially, the outlook remains bright. Buyer demand is steady,

pipelines are strong, and confidence is holding firm. Stability may not make the headlines, but after several rollercoaster years, it’s exactly what the property market and indeed many of us need.

So as the candles glow and celebrations begin, let’s take a moment to appreciate both the light of the season and the calm confidence returning to the housing market. A balanced market, like the season itself, is something truly worth celebrating.

MDA UK and UJIA recently held an event in conversation with awardwinning Producer Leo Pearlman at the MAZ Community

Centre.

Leo Pearlman is Co-CEO of Fulwell 73, Executive Producer of Emmy-award-winning ‘We Will Dance Again’ and as a proud north easterner, non-Exec Board Member of Sunderland AFC. Over 100 attendees heard Leo in a tell-all evening covering all things TV and film, sport, antisemitism, and much more.

Quizzed by host Alex Ullmann, Leo kicked off with a brief introduction: “I run a production company called Fulwell Entertainment and we’ve been around for 20 years. We’re documentary makers, and have produced The Kardashians, The Grammys, Carpool Karaoke, and it’s just been announced that we’ll be doing the LA Olympics in 2028 which is incredibly exciting.

“On a personal note, I’m also quite an outspoken advocate for Israel and against antisemitism, something that I’ve found myself doing a lot since October 7th – it’s become a really important part of my life.”

On life before Fulwell 73, Leo joked: “I used to have several businesses and no intention to work in TV or film. I described myself as a serial entrepreneur, which for anyone who knows, means a failed entrepreneur! I was making Jewish charity videos and literally fell into an idea for a TV show on a night out in London, bumping into two people in a pub that worked in the industry.

“I pitched my idea made up completely on the spot fuelled by a couple of drinks and they said they wanted to get involved. I ended up calling up my cousins (co-founders of Fulwell alongside Ben Winston and Leo) Gabe and Ben Turner – neither of whom worked in TV – and we made a programme called The Freestyle Show which is still the worst TV show ever made!”

Leo was born in Sunderland and grew up in Newcastle, and the North East has remained a huge part of his life. The name Fulwell 73 comes from one of the old stands at Sunderland’s old Roker Park Stadium and 73 for 1973, the year Sunderland beat Leeds to win the FA Cup. After founding in 2005, the company went from strength to strength, rocketing in 2009 when it produced a comedy sketch with James Corden as his Gavin and Stacey character, Smithy, for Comic Relief.

In the following years, the company made multiple world-famous documentaries, including Sunderland ‘Til I Die and more recently, We Will Dance Again – the first documentary made about the Nova music festival attack: “On 8th October 2023, when we didn’t really know the full extent of what

was going on, I got a call from a friend of mine in Israel who said he knew a filmmaker that had been flown down there to document what was going on for legal purposes and he found himself in the middle of a warzone. He said: ‘I don't know what the film is, what the story is, or what they're going to cover but would you co-produce and co-finance something about this particular moment?’ and I immediately said yes. This is the project I’m most proud of, but I desperately wish it didn’t have to be made.”

Alongside his TV and film work, another one of Leo’s passions is fighting antisemitism and encouraging others to do the same: “It’s so important that we don’t back down, we need to stand up, speak out, and be loud and proud of who we are. Some people are lucky enough to have a platform where we can say something and it reaches a wide audience, but it can be as simple as telling a colleague about what Rosh Hashanah means, about a fantastic Friday night dinner you had, and how close you are with your family. Sharing these little things can start real conversations and humanise us as Jews – that’s just as important as anyone in the public eye who does so.”

ALEX ULLMANN, LEO PEARLMAN, AND ALEXA HARRIS
Local Playwright Emma Baim spoke to us about her career and being selected as one of the lucky few for the Women in Theatre Lab.

Leeds born and bred, Emma Baim has been creative for as long as she can remember, developing a love for the arts from an early age. Emma uses her plays as a powerful platform to give voice to stories often left untold, challenging stigmas and celebrating the strength found in openness and honesty.

“Creativity runs in my family’s blood; my dad was a magician and my grandma wrote poetry. She used to come round for Friday night dinner every week and bring us new poems that she was working on and we’d dissect them at the table – I remember always loving that process,” Emma reflects fondly on a childhood surrounded by creativity.

Having acted since she was a toddler, Emma began playwriting as an adult and quickly fell in love with it: “I accidentally found myself setting up a community arts organisation in Leeds – Next Generation Arts – and started writing children’s plays to fill a gap that there was in the community. I also did some teaching at GSAL and wrote a few original plays as there weren’t many that had enough parts for the kids.

“In 2017, I saw an advert for an Arvon playwriting course and was awarded a bursary to spend a week in Shropshire where I wrote a play called brOKen. This was created from my lived experiences and was the first play I’d written for me; it was a story that I needed to tell.”

brOKen details Emma’s experiences of living with Crohn’s Disease from the age of three, and this was the play which got her selected for the Women in Theatre Lab. Founded by Polly Kemp and Jennifer Tuckett, the initiative aims to close the gap between opportunities for men and women in the arts industry: “Given that we’re in 2025, there are still so few doors open for female voices and there are so many more male artistic directors.

“Polly and Jennifer launched the initiative

to create a platform for female writers, specifically mid-career emerging artists, which is quite unusual as usually there are lots of opportunities for ages 25 and under but not a lot if you’re well past that!”

Out of over 1,000 applicants, Emma was one of 14 selected to be commissioned to write a new piece which was showcased at London’s Jermyn Street Theatre: “We took part in a series of writing labs with some very successful female playwrights who shared their experiences with us which was really lovely. A lot of the time as a writer, you never get to see your work come to life unless it goes to a big production, so it was amazing to see my work on stage.”

Emma’s commissioned play is called Two Week Wait, which explores the rollercoaster of IVF and the all-consuming nature of the desire to have a family by any means possible, a topic which is close to her heart: “Authenticity is one of the most important things in drama and I tend to be most passionate about telling stories about things that are often difficult to talk about. I think the reason for that is that I spent my life with a secret that was my hidden disability; it's only when I got older that I realised the power of openness, sharing, and talking.”

Like brOKen, Two Week Wait is based around Emma’s struggles, and she hopes that her work will resonate with people: “My plays aren’t solely my experiences, and I think to create a story we need to share experiences that are bigger than just ourselves.

“Theatre is such a powerful medium and there’s something about the liveness and shared experience that you can’t replicate with film and TV. I’ve fallen in love with writing and creating worlds and stories in a way that I never imagined I would – it’s so exciting to discover a new passion in your 40s!”

Meant to Be

When Gary Enkin retired during COVID, he had a secret. While his wife went about her routine, the 70-year-old Leeds resident was teaching himself to write screenplays. Without formal training or any writing background, what began as a retirement hobby has culminated in Beshert, a short film that won the UK Jewish Film's Pears Short Film Fund and is now touring the country.

"I always had stories in my head," Gary explains. "But life gets in the way – you've got to earn money and keep the family afloat. When I retired, I started writing a book. It lasted ten pages. I read it back and thought, 'This is rubbish.' I just tore it up."

What happened next took Gary by surprise. He discovered he thought visually –or perhaps cinematically – seeing characters and hearing them speak. Screenwriting felt natural. He taught himself the format online, learning as he went. His first script for the competition made the final five, encouraging him to continue despite not winning.

Two or three years and several scripts later, Gary wrote Beshert. His daughter and wife read it and declared it his best work. But he couldn't find a filmmaker to partner with. Frustrated, he emailed the competition organisers to withdraw. It was the last day of entries.

We talk to Gary Enkin, writer of short film competition winner, Beshert, showing at this year’s UK Jewish Film Festival.

"They just said, 'Send it in anyway. At least let the judges read it,'" Gary recalls. "I sent it in and thought no more about it."

Days later, the organisers called The judges were impressed and they'd found London filmmakers who wanted to collaborate. Gary met director Lewis Rose and producer Jason Solomons in a restaurant, then went straight to the shortlist interviews. That night, a WhatsApp message from Solomons arrived that read: "Mazel tov on making your film!" Gary recalls the whole thing as being quite surreal.

Beshert – a Yiddish word traditionally meaning soulmate or destiny – explores an intergenerational friendship set in a Jewish nursing home. The story centres on the unlikely connection between a grumpy elderly man and a reluctant young visitor which transforms both their lives.

The inspiration came from visiting relatives in care homes: "I noticed that older and young people really connect when you skip the middle generation. That was the basis – two people who didn't want to meet, but from that meeting, both their futures are affected."

The term itself resonated deeply. His parents and grandparents used it frequently, and Gary was surprised how many younger people, while perhaps not using the word, still believe things happen for a reason: "It's not just a romantic term anymore. It's evolved to mean something broader – that sometimes meetings and moments are meant to be."

Shot over four days in a Jewish nursing home in Clapham, the film features what Gary describes as 'top-notch' cinematography and performances. He watched as an observer, learning about filmmaking while his words came to life.

"When I saw the final cut, I was emotional, pretty gobsmacked," he says. "It was exactly what was inside my head. All the characters were exactly how I imagined them. The weirdest feeling, honestly."

Beshert premiered in London in early November and screens in Leeds at Hyde Park Picture House this December. For Gary, the film represents more than personal achievement – it's proof that creativity has no age limit.

"Just because you get older doesn't mean you retire from being creative," he insists. "If I can do it, anybody can. I hope that inspires even one person."

Gary is already working on his next project – a comedy drama – and says he's finally 'found his voice' as a writer. The difference between his early scripts and recent work is striking: "I found how to express myself and how the characters should speak. I see them and hear them. That's what I concentrate on now."

As for whether Beshert itself was meant to be? Gary’s wife remains the most surprised by his success, but even she can't deny the serendipity. A last-minute submission, unexpected collaborators, and a story about destiny – the film's title says it all. For Gary, retirement hasn't meant stopping. It's meant starting something entirely new.

STEPPING UP

Leeds Jewish Representative Council (LJRC) continues to go above and beyond in responding to the needs of the community.

As other community organisations have scaled back, LJRC has stepped in, helping to lead Yom Hazikaron (with UJIA), Holocaust Memorial Day, October 7th remembrance, and programming for Pesach and other Chagim.

It has also delivered ulpan classes, helped launch Moishe House Without Walls (MHWOW) to support young Jewish adults, and run intergenerational programmes that build connection and pride in Jewish life.

The launch of the Leeds Chaplaincy highlighted how faith, business, and

community can come together to create more caring, inclusive spaces. Earlier this year, LJRC completed a communitywide survey to hear directly from residents about their concerns, priorities, and hopes.

Responding to calls for greater transparency, the LJRC now provides regular newsletters and updates through the Leeds Jewish Community Facebook group. The board has produced a new draft strategic plan and budget designed not only for LJRC but for the wider Jewish community. This plan brings together synagogues, youth groups, welfare bodies, cultural organisations, and CST to build a shared, inclusive, and sustainable vision for Jewish life in Leeds. However, much of this work is done on a shoestring.

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

With some grant funding coming to an end, the LJRC is exploring new partnerships and funding models to ensure its impact continues to grow.

The LJRC’s commitment remains unwavering: to speak out, step up, and reach across divides for the good of the Leeds Jewish community. Jewish life here is not only worth preserving – it’s worth celebrating. Together, we will continue to lead, advocate, and stand strong.

To those who have already supported this work, thank you. To anyone new to the LJRC who wishes to stay informed or become a patron, please contact info@ljrc.org

10 YEARS ON

How

a kitchen table conversation became a cultural movement.

10 years ago, in a kitchen in Alwoodley, a small group of friends gathered with a shared passion for storytelling, heritage, and community. Among them were local writers, researchers, and creatives who came to wondering: what if Leeds had its own Jewish literary festival?

The name came soon after. Alan Benstock suggested MiliM – Hebrew for ‘words’, and a palindrome to boot. By the end of that kitchen table meeting, a vision had been born: a Month of Words, a celebration of literature, culture, and identity rooted in Leeds.

MiliM’s first event took place on 1st March 2016 at the British Library in Thorp Arch. Attendees were treated to a behind-thescenes look at the library’s incredible robotoperated archives and a fascinating talk on ancient Hebrew manuscripts.

For the next four years, MiliM ran an annual Festival of Words and Ideas every March alongside a rolling calendar of

smaller events. Backed by local sponsors and supported by Leeds City Council, the festival quickly became a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar – welcoming authors, performers, historians, and voices from all corners of the community.

2020 was shaping up to be another successful year – until the world changed overnight. But MiliM was ready. Plans for a digital shift were already in the works and within days, the first online event went live.

Since that pivot, MiliM hasn’t just survived – it’s flourished. To date, MiliM has:

• Produced 240 online talks hosted by Jonathan Straight

• Over 25,800 attendees from across the globe

• Produced three original plays

• Contributed to Leeds 2023: Year of Culture

• Co-founded Leeds Lit Fest

• Launched the Leeds Jewish Living History Project, preserving local stories for future generations

And it’s not just about Leeds anymore. Thanks to its online reach, MiliM has welcomed audiences from across the UK –and beyond. The new strapline says it best: words, culture, and heritage for all.

10 years on, MiliM remains rooted in its founding values: creativity, community, and curiosity. Whether through literature, theatre, history, or conversation, it’s about connection – between generations, across cultures, and within ourselves.

Dive In!

The latest phenomenon sweeping the health and wellbeing world is open water swimming; NOWCA tells us more.

Open water swimming – the practice of swimming in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, and the sea – has surged in popularity in recent years, drawing everyone from seasoned athletes to casual adventurers.

NOWCA’s mission is: more water, more people, more safely. It’s the UK’s largest network of safe open water swimming venues and it also offers the NOWCA Wild app to help swimmers find swim spots in the wild and connect them to swim groups.

In recent years, people have been actively seeking ways to support both their physical and mental wellbeing and open water swimming offers a unique combination of exercise, nature, and escapism. During and after lockdown, there were limited options available for exercise; gyms and pools were closed so for many it became a source of freedom, connection, and calm.

There’s also now much more awareness around safe access to open water, with organised environments and supportive communities, making it easier and more reassuring for people to give it a try.

Open water swimming feels like an adventure. There are no lanes, no chlorine, and no routine – just the natural world and that incredible sense of space. Every swim outdoors is different – the seasons, wildlife, and weather all make it a richer, more mindful experience. For those who prefer a bit of reassurance, managed venues offer lifeguarded or safety cover and clear safety procedures which gives swimmers the confidence to transition from pool to open water while still feeling supported.

The health benefits are huge, with an excellent full body, low-impact workout that strengthens the heart, lungs, and muscles without placing strain on the joints. Swimming in cold water adds another layer of benefit, helping to boost circulation and metabolism. Over time, many open water swimmers notice improvements in their personal fitness, breathing efficiency, core strength, and overall endurance – as well as feeling much happier with improved mental health.

The moment your body meets cold or open water, your focus shifts completely to the present. You’re suddenly tuned in to your breath, your body, and your surroundings which creates a natural form of mindfulness. Combined with the release of endorphins, this produces a mental ‘reset’ that leaves swimmers feeling calmer, clearer, and more grounded. It’s a powerful antidote to screens, stress, and the pace of everyday life.

Cold water immersion triggers a surge of endorphins, dopamine, and other feel-good chemicals which can create a noticeable mood lift and sense of euphoria. Regular, controlled exposure to cold is also linked to improved stress regulation, helping swimmers feel more resilient in day-to-day life.

Most people can enjoy open water swimming, but NOWCA recommends that those who may have known medical history should seek advice from their medical professional before starting. Cold water affects everyone differently and safety should always be the first priority. Start slowly, build up gradually, and swim at supervised venues or with experienced groups helps ensure a

positive and safe introduction. Here are some key safety precautions for someone new to the sport…

• Education – preparation is key to a safe swim. There are many resources online and coaching at managed venues.

• Begin at a recognised, lifeguarded venue or with an experienced group.

• Enter the water gradually to allow your body to adjust to the temperature.

• Wear suitable kit – wetsuit if needed, bright swim cap for visibility, and a tow float.

• Never swim alone – always swim with others or where safety cover is in place. Know your entry and exit points and stay well within your limits.

Start small, stay safe, and enjoy the experience. You don’t need to swim far or long to benefit – even just a few seconds in cold water can be incredibly rewarding.

You can try it for yourself at Leeds Dock; once an industrial heart of Yorkshire’s waterways, it's now home to sessions being run by Love Open Water all year round. Nowca.org | Leedsdock.com Loveopenwater.co.uk

Health Matters

IV drips and NAD+ therapy – your wellness questions answered! With Dr Harry Rashid, Medical Director of the Leeds Clinic.

What makes IV infusions so popular?

IV infusions can provide rapid delivery of key nutrients, helping support natural energy, hydration, clarity, and overall balance from within. They deliver vitamins, minerals, hydration – and even NAD+ – directly into the bloodstream for fast, effective absorption.

What is NAD?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a naturally occurring coenzyme that supports energy, focus, and cellular wellbeing. Many people choose NAD+ infusions when they want to feel refreshed, clear, and balanced.

Should you consider blood testing first?

Blood testing can highlight areas where your nutrient levels may be lower than ideal –such as low B vitamins, reduced vitamin C, or insufficient magnesium. These insights help guide which IV drip blend may best support your personal wellness goals.

What are examples of nutrient insufficiency?

Many people experience occasional tiredness, reduced focus, or feeling run-down due to everyday factors like stress, busy schedules, or poor sleep. These can sometimes be linked to lower nutrient levels, for example…

• Low B vitamins: may relate to reduced energy

• Low magnesium: may contribute to muscle tension or fatigue

• Low vitamin C or zinc: may affect overall wellness and resilience

Is it safe?

Yes absolutely. All treatments here are administered by trained professionals who ensure a calm, comfortable, and supportive experience.

Please feel free to email Dr Harry, reception@leeds-clinic.co.uk, or visit Leeds-clinic.co.uk/iv-drip-therapy

Step It Up!

As we look ahead to the new year, many of us will have self-improvement on our minds and a desire to shake off the unfortunate side effects of festive over-indulgence. While such good intentions fuel the surge in gym memberships every January, there are other ways to fulfil your fitness resolutions – and you can find them in a nearby dance studio.

Research shows that dance offers unique advantages over traditional exercise. Structured dance programmes can be as effective – and sometimes more effective –than conventional exercise for psychological and cognitive health. As people increasingly prioritise mental health, dance uniquely fulfils this need by combining physical activity with creative expression, social connection, and the mood-boosting power of music.

Dance provides a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular fitness, builds strength and flexibility, strengthens bones, aids weight management, and provides cognitive stimulation, stress reduction, and community building. It incorporates movements across all planes of motion, engaging every muscle group while building balance and coordination – particularly important as we age.

Fitness professionals agree that keeping to a new exercise routine remains the biggest challenge – dance solves this by being inherently enjoyable. When exercise feels like fun rather than a chore, consistency becomes natural.

Dance can boost memory, reduce symptoms of anxiety, and even help prevent dementia. Learning choreography, coordinating movements, and responding to music creates new neural connections while challenging cognitive skills. Classes can foster community and friendship, contributing to happiness and emotional resilience. Partner dances particularly enhance social skills and interpersonal connections while working out.

Leeds offers a fantastic array of dance

opportunities for every age, ability, and interest. Whether you're seeking a gentle introduction to movement or ready to master complex choreography, there's something for you.

The Home of Elevated Movement

A charming Chapel Allerton fitness studio is turning people on to the wonder of the Reformer Pilates experience.

Nestled in the heart of Chapel Allerton, BLOC STUDIO is helping people find new ways to move with strength and ease. This self-contained studio, bathed in natural light, creates a calm sanctuary where people of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds can explore the life-changing benefits of mindful movement.

Equipped with eight state-of-the-art Reformers and led by a team of ten experienced instructors, BLOC STUDIO provides group classes and private sessions designed to enhance posture, build core strength, improve mobility, and support overall wellbeing. Each instructor brings their unique personality and methods to classes, ensuring you'll get a different workout every time.

Pilates has surged in popularity recently and at BLOC STUDIO, the approach blends traditional and contemporary Pilates to deliver a comprehensive workout that can transform the way you feel in your body.

What makes the Reformer special is how it not only provides resistance but supports you in moving your body into positions you'd never achieve on your own. Spring resistance makes exercises both easier and harder, while straps for arms and feet allow you to work muscles you wouldn't normally engage, stretching and strengthening in ways that aren't possible on the mat or at the gym. The movements are layered – starting with basic moves and slowly building, increasing the

challenge gradually. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve, with instructors trained to provide extra support through modifications or alternative movements if you have injuries or aren't ready to progress. Classes align movement with breath, providing a calming element that makes each session both physically challenging and mentally restorative.

BLOC STUDIO is the brainchild of lifelong friends, Katie Reisch and Hannah Campbell, who discovered their shared passion for Reformer Pilates. After 20 years of friendship the duo decided to leave their corporate careers in finance and marketing to create something special together. They found the perfect spot in Chapel Allerton, complete with sash windows, wooden beams, and a stone wall, then renovated it themselves, replacing floors, painting, and adding their signature touches.

Katie and Hannah both qualified in mat and Reformer Pilates shortly after opening, and their vision has since grown into a thriving community hub where movement meets wellbeing.

What truly sets BLOC STUDIO apart is its inclusive approach: "We're dedicated to being a studio for everyBODY," explains Katie. Members range from 18 to 70+ years old and come from all walks of life. Regular feedback highlights how comfortable people feel at the studio – a testament to the welcoming atmosphere.

The signature classes – beginner, intermediate, and advanced – form the core offering, but BLOC STUDIO'S unique schedule includes much more:

50+ classes – designed for those who prefer to work out among people of a similar age

Splits classes – using the Reformer to stretch and strengthen muscles for front and side splits

Strength classes – incorporating dumbbells for added resistance

Reformer disco ball sessions – Friday nights with blinds closed, disco ball up, and music pumping, with different themes each week

Reformer by candlelight – a more relaxing session surrounded by candles

Pre-and-post-natal classes – meet likeminded individuals and bring your baby along too

BLOC STUDIO also regularly hosts beauty and wellness events, having recently welcomed Charlotte Tilbury masterclasses and NEOM Wellbeing events. The space is perfect for private party sessions and celebrations.

Sleep expert and Physiologist, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, gives us her top tips for getting a good night’s sleep.

The UK is experiencing a sleep deprivation crisis, with an estimated 18.5 million adults sleeping fewer than six hours a night. With the clocks recently going back and winter’s shorter, darker days setting in, many adults face even greater challenges in getting restorative sleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing but for many, it doesn’t come easily. Between busy schedules, constant screen time, and daily stress, quality rest can feel out of reach. The good news is that better sleep isn’t just about luck; it’s about building the right habits and environment to support your body’s natural rhythm.

A recent survey commissioned by Kalms Herbal Remedies revealed the extent of the nation’s sleep epidemic. 54% of UK adults surveyed struggle to drift off at night, with 46% operating on alarmingly low levels of sleep. The primary culprits? Difficulty falling asleep (52%) and frequent night-time awakenings (54%). While darker evenings may encourage some to head to bed earlier, the sudden adjustment in time from the clocks changing can throw body clocks off balance, making it harder to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.

Circadian rhythm, our body’s internal 24hour clock, plays a crucial role in regulating sleep. The transition out of daylight saving time combined with the challenges of the winter season can disturb the sleepwake cycle, leading to social jet lag and contributing to an accumulation of sleep debt. This disruption doesn’t just impact energy levels – it can also affect overall wellbeing and productivity.

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan is a Physiologist and Sleep Therapist who obtained her BSc and PhD from King's College London. She’s also the author of Tired but Wired: How to Overcome Your Sleep Problems: The

Essential Toolkit and is Silentnight's ‘sleep expert’. Commenting on the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, she says: “Sleep is fundamental for our physical and mental health, enhancing all aspects of the mind, body, and soul. When we achieve consistent, good quality sleep, we have the physical and mental ability to deal with the burden of uncertain times.

“Creating a sleep-care routine that aligns with your lifestyle and makes you feel relaxed gives you the best chance of achieving a deep and restorative night’s sleep and waking up feeling reenergised. This differs from person to person, but the concept remains the same; develop reliable practices that help you to unwind from the stressors of daily life and prioritise sleep.”

To help navigate the seasonal shift, Dr Nerina shares five essential pillars for achieving deeper, more restorative sleep…

are tricks we can do to stop the body waking into full consciousness. When this happens, avoid checking the time on your phone or any electronic device and try this simple relaxation technique; close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing, take deep breaths in and slow breaths out, lulling yourself back to sleep.

Herbal remedies

For centuries, valerian root has been commonly used for its sleep-inducing properties. It works by promoting calmness and reducing stress, a common trigger for sleep disturbances. Herbal remedies offer a safe over-the-counter solution to support a restful night’s sleep with less chance of waking in the night.

Digital detox

When we’re tired and ready for bed, the body starts to produce more melatonin levels, signalling it’s ready to go to sleep. But when we get into bed and start scrolling or watching something on a screen, it can prevent us from falling asleep by inhibiting the production of the sleep hormone and increases levels of dopamine, which is associated with wakefulness. Make sure you dim the brightness, or better still, make your bedroom a screen-free zone.

Relaxation

Waking in the early hours of the morning is more common than you think, but there

Mindset shift

Writing down daily gratitudes before you go to bed shifts your focus to positive things which have happened in your day. Studies have shown that optimistic people have a 70% lower chance of suffering from sleep disorders and can even live healthier and longer lives than pessimists.

Routine is key

It’s easy to hit the snooze button and sneak in a few more minutes sleep but waking up and going to bed at the same time each day helps to give our internal body clock the consistency it needs to maintain its sleepwake cycles. Set an alarm for the same time each morning and make waking up at the same time just as important as going to bed at a consistent hour.

Safety First

A new era has been born out of tragedy in the world of medical aesthetics and Sozo Clinic in Headingley is set to become one of the leading destinations in Leeds.

The public have spoken; people are demanding higher standards in aesthetics. After a year of shocking UK headlines, including botulism cases linked to fake botulinum toxin and backstreet clinics performing rogue ‘liquid Brazilian butt lifts’ and rogue liposuction, it’s not surprising that UK legislation is calling for regulation within what the press have labelled the cosmetic ‘wild west’.

The UK’s regulatory framework has not kept pace, resulting in procedures being carried out by unqualified practitioners lacking the knowledge to manage complications. Tragic cases, including the death of a young woman after an unsafe cosmetic procedure, highlight the dangers of allowing invasive treatments outside regulated environments.

With standards slipping and complications rising, it’s no surprise that many feel apprehensive about facial injections, skin treatments, or even routine non-surgical procedures. Yet the demand for aesthetics has never been higher. Caught in this tension, the UK faces growing pressure to regulate what many describe as the ‘grey area’ between beauty and medicine. And this is precisely where Sozo Clinic Leeds comes in!

A new, safer era for aesthetic medicine in Leeds

Sozo Healthcare Ltd will shortly be opening the doors of its flagship venue, Sozo Clinic Leeds, based in Far Headingley. As a regulated clinic, senior aesthetic nurse prescribers will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of doctors and surgeons, including specialists in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Together, there is an unparalleled level of clinical oversight, skill, and professionalism brought to the city’s aesthetic landscape.

The clinic offers cutting-edge, evidencebased treatments delivered to the highest medical standards. Every treatment has been chosen with one guiding principle – patient safety first. In an industry where quality varies, the business stands apart by grounding every procedure in clinical expertise, ethical practice, and genuine patient care.

Cutting-edge technology delivered safely

One of the clinic’s most impressive technologies is the Asclepion Dermablate Er:YAG system, a state-of-the-art laser platform known for its precision, safety, and versatility. Combined with the Pro Yellow Laser, it enables advanced non-surgical procedures such as…

• Non-surgical blepharoplasty

• Skin surfacing for lines, scars, texture, and pigmentation

• Dermatological procedures including actinic keratoses, milia, xanthelasma, and acne scarring

• Laser treatment for snoring

• Laser treatment for gynaecological rejuvenation

Its cold-ablation technology reduces thermal injury, making treatments effective yet gentle and importantly, safe for most skin types and colours. Sozo brings world-class medical grade lasers into an accessible, welcoming clinic environment. It’s a space where patients can expect comfort, class, and care.

Why medical-led matters more than ever

The Sozo philosophy is simple: aesthetic medicine is still medicine. Treatments that alter anatomy or carry systemic risk must never be treated as casual beauty services. Patients deserve transparency, robust consent, sterile environments, and practitioners who can recognise and manage complications – not just perform the procedure.

A clinic built on integrity, excellence, and warmth

By choosing highly trained medical professionals, Sozo ensures every client receives ethical guidance, safe treatment pathways, and results grounded in evidence. The mission is not only to deliver beautiful outcomes – though the results speak for themselves – but to elevate standards across the industry.

Maria Farquharson – Clinical Lead at Sozo Aesthetics

Maria is an Independent Nurse Prescriber with more than a decade of experience in aesthetic medicine and a strong clinical background from her years working in the NHS – Sozo brings a level of safety and medical oversight rarely seen in non-surgical aesthetics

With its expert team, advanced technologies, compassionate ethos, and unwavering commitment to patient wellbeing, Sozo Clinic is set to become one of the most trusted destinations for medical aesthetics in Leeds.

Introducing Leeds-based Orthopaedic Surgeons Sam Jain and Adam Lomax who are coming together to offer advice to JLife readers.

Tell us about your background and what sets your clinic apart?

I’m a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery. After completing specialist training in Yorkshire, I undertook advanced fellowship training across the UK. At Leeds Hip and Knee Clinic, we pride ourselves on offering bespoke, patient-centred treatment. What really sets us apart is our blend of clinical expertise, detailed explanations and compassion from the first consultation right through to recovery.

Who do you treat?

I treat a wide range of patients experiencing hip and knee pain from younger, active individuals to older adults struggling with long-term joint problems. The most common condition I see is osteoarthritis which can cause pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. It often severely impacts patients’ independence and quality of life.

Give us an introduction to yourself and the clinic!

I’m an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon and have been a consultant for over 10 years. I’ve trained extensively in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery in the UK and Europe and have a wealth of expertise in treating all conditions that affect the foot and ankle. At Leeds Foot and Ankle Clinic, we have highly specialist expertise and use modern techniques in foot and ankle surgery to rapidly diagnose and treat patients and get them back to the things they enjoy doing.

What are the most common issues you treat?

The most common conditions I see are bunions and toe deformities, arthritis in the big toe and the rest of the foot and ankle, Morton's neuromas and metatarsalgia, Achilles tendon problems, plantar fasciitis, ankle ligament and

Is surgery the only option?

Many patients benefit greatly from nonsurgical treatments such as pain medication, healthy lifestyle choices and physiotherapy. For some, targeted joint injections or more structured rehabilitation programmes can delay or even remove the need for surgery altogether.

How do you see technology evolving your field?

I regularly perform robotic-assisted surgery, which allows me to plan operations tailored to each patient’s individual anatomy. This gives a greater level of precision and faster recovery. In the future, I think we’ll see integration of technology with large datasets. Whilst this may improve outcomes, it’s really important that we don’t lose the human

sports injuries, and ankle instability.

Many people are in pain from a variety of conditions that affect their feet and ankles, as well as those who have had injuries and failed to recover back to their normal activities for whatever reason.

Are there any non-surgical measures that you recommend?

Certain conditions respond well to nonsurgical measures such as physio or insole/ orthotic provision. We always try to manage the problem without surgery in the first instance if its success is likely and hasn’t been tried prior to coming to see me.

Surgery is only offered if it’s felt to be the best option and non-operative options

aspects of delivering healthcare such as empathy, communication and trust.

What is the rehabilitation process?

Rehabilitation begins immediately after surgery because early movement is essential for a successful recovery. Our expert physiotherapists offer close supervision and guidance both in and out of hospital. Recovery times vary but most people resume normal daily activities quickly and are usually back to driving within six weeks. For most, joint replacement surgery represents far more than pain relief – it’s about regaining independence, confidence and the ability to enjoy life again.

Any advice for those considering getting help?

Don’t wait until pain limits everything you do! The sooner you seek advice, the more options we can explore together to maintain your quality of life. Whatever the path, I’ll guide you through every stage with dignity, respect and clear communication. I am genuinely very privileged to help patients return to the activities and lifestyle they love most.

www.leedshipandkneeclinic.co.uk

have been considered and tried. Most often, the purpose of surgery is to improve pain and function, improving quality of life and returning patients to activities they wish to do. Patients are always fully involved in the decision-making at every point along their pathway of care.

What’s the recovery process like?

Rehabilitation depends greatly on the operation performed. Some conditions require a quick return to activity to maximise strength and function, whereas others require a period of immobilisation in a shoe or boot to allow the surgery chance to heal. Using modern surgical techniques and implants we aim to ensure that every patient’s recovery is as quick as possible.

Any words for those seeking a solution?

There are so many conditions causing pain, disability, and loss of function in the ankle and foot that we can successfully treat. So please don't suffer, come and get help from a specialist who treats these problems every day. www.leedsfootandankleclinic.co.uk

Health & Wellbeing

Embrace the chill this season and visit one of Europe’s many breathtaking ski resorts.

Winter is here and it’s the perfect time to embrace the cold and hit the slopes. Across Europe, plenty of ski resorts are waiting – from the towering Alps to the scenic Dolomites. Whether you’re an expert skier chasing exhilarating thrills or just looking for a cosy mountain getaway, you’ll find breathtaking views, charming villages, and plenty of après-ski fun wherever you go.

Kitzbühel | Austria

Dominated by three majestic mountain ranges, Kitzbühel boasts flowing terrain that’s weaved between snow-laden forests and traditional mountain villages including Reith, Aurach, and Jochberg.

Known to locals as Kitz, Kitzbühel is home to perfectly groomed slopes, a state-of-theart lift system, 233km of pistes, and a ski season that runs from early December until late March. Despite being home to what is considered one of the most challenging downhill slopes in the world (Hahnenkamm Streif), a total of 58 gondolas and lifts facilitate fun for beginners and professionals like.

The Kitz Mini-Streif slope is tailormade for beginners, offering a gentle introduction to skiing for the little ones. For more adventurous kids, attractions like the mini mouse trap, the chamois, the 'steep slope', and the Kids-Hausbergkante provide thrilling experiences and skill development opportunities.

If you’re looking for more than just skiing, there’s endless ways to enjoy the mountains in Kitz. Tobogganing, night skiing, winter hiking, cross-country hiking, skiing on the ice, or even a freezing dip in Schwarzsee –the resort’s ‘winter classics’ offer a true taste of alpine adventure.

Let’s not forget après-ski activities! The

surrounding areas of the ski resort are home to a wide variety of tasty treats that range from local dishes in the mountain huts and traditional inns in the valley to international gourmet cuisine.

Val-d’Isère | France

Widely recognised as one of the world’s best ski resorts, Val-d’Isère is among the most stylish and authentic in the Alps. The resort offers everything that lovers of skiing, fine dining, and wellbeing could possibly want – a spa, pool, yoga, and delightful opportunities to stroll and unwind.

With a ski season that runs from the first weekend in December to the beginning of May, there’s plenty of time to visit this glamorous location. There’s over 300km of slopes to explore and snow is always guaranteed due to the resort’s high altitude and top-quality snow guns which cover 65km of runs.

For those days you don’t feel like hitting the slopes, Val-d’Isère prides itself on the number of other activities available in and around the resort. With everything ranging from ice skating and snowmobile riding to ice floating and paragliding, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your holiday.

Fancy partying with an après-ski session right on the slopes? You can start by lingering after lunch at one of the lively mountain restaurants like La Folie Douce where you’ll enjoy a Cabaret-style show or music mixed by a DJ and Bar de l’Ouillette which invites you to enjoy the sun, sipping at a glass of rosé on the terrace.

In the Daille sector, the Barillon de la Rosée Blanche is well-known for its wild, English-speaking après-ski scene. There’s also the lively Bar des Tontons which spreads across two floors with its open-plan mezzanine that hosts daily concerts, wine or beer tasting nights, morning wellness activities, and afternoon lectures.

Cortina d’Ampezzo | Italy

Often described as ‘the queen of the Dolomites’, Cortina d’Ampezzo has long lured the international jetsetter, with Hollywood stars – including Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, and Brigitte Bardot – and European elites choosing it as a holiday spot since the 1950s. Despite this exclusivity, Cortina retains an authentic Italian soul.

In addition to attracting a plethora of illustrious visitors, Cortina was the site of the first ever Winter Olympics to be held in Italy in 1956. 70 years later, next year in 2026, it will host them again! With this being just months away, the resort is almost ready to welcome an influx of spectators. One of the biggest investments that’s been made in preparation for this is the 4.6km-long Cortina skyline gondola, whisking skiers from Tofane to the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Torri area.

With slopes of all grades of difficulty, breathtaking scenery, and a ski season that runs from December to April, Cortina is a coveted destination for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. There are 120km of pistes that wind through the spectacular views of the two ski slopes of Faloria – Cristallo to the east and Tofana, Pocol, Cinque Torri, and Falzarego to the west.

Famed for its luxury and exclusivity, many Cortina devotees spend more time shopping and strolling along the glamorous Corso Italia promenade and sipping aperitivos than they do skiing – you really do get the best of both worlds here!

Verbier 4Vallées | Switzerland

Ideal for expert skiers, the largest ski area entirely located in Switzerland is open for 10 months every year. The Verbier 4Vallées area is paradise for skiers, snowboarders, and mountain bikers where you can escape to the summits and explore beautiful scenery.

Spanning four distinct valleys, the ski area offers over 400km of pistes plus some of the world’s most challenging off-piste terrain –it’s not for the faint-hearted!

The first valley is Verbier, where the famous Attelas piste starts at 2,700m and there’s an exhilarating 1,000m-long descent. In the Bruson area, you’ll find the La Pasay slope with two choices: a black run with a 35° slope at the top or a second option which circles round a hill before gradually becoming steeper. Dry Eye

James Daly Opticians is taking on new patients to relieve the symptoms of modern living in its new state-of-the-art specialist Dry Eye Clinic.

JLife’s resident expert James Daly Opticians has been established in Moortown for over 18 years. The practice has invested in stateof-the-art equipment to provide patients suffering with dry eye a diagnosis and treatment options in its new dry eye clinic.

There are many causes of dry eye, including medication, contact lenses, hormonal changes, hospital treatment such as cataract surgery, pollution, computer use, and other environmental factors. Symptoms include a sandy or gritty feeling, sore eyes, uncomfortable and sometimes painful eyes, an itching or burning sensation, short-term blurred vision, and watery eyes.

The new clinic, purpose built within the existing premises, is run by Optometrist, Melissa. Melissa is an expert in the field of dry eyes and can offer a whole range of treatments. Dry eye treatments are not a onesize-fits-all, and the team will discuss your options in detail with you depending on your symptoms and diagnosis. The three main treatments offered at the new clinic are eye drops or ointments, Activa (heat treatment), and TearStim (intense regulated pulsed light).

Eye drops

They work by lubricating the eye, reducing inflammation, and delivering medication to target various eye issues. They can be beneficial when used as directed by our optometrist.

Activa

Activa is a heat treatment. It works by gently heating and massaging the eyelids, increasing meibomian output and helping

your eyes stay lubricated for longer. The experience is non-invasive, painless, and offers relief to irritated and swollen eyelids.

TearStim

TearStim is a treatment using intense regulated pulsed light (IRPL) to address dry eye disease by stimulating the meibomian glands. The procedure involves an optometrist applying a protective gel and then using the TearStim device to deliver gentle, painless light pulses below the eyes. This helps to restart natural oil production and stabilise the tear film.

The treatment typically requires multiple sessions and can provide relief from symptoms like grittiness and soreness.

The initial dry eye consultation takes just over an hour, and a full patient report is provided at the end with all the findings from the consultation.

Patients do not need to have had an eye test at our practice previously and do not require a referral from their own optician. You just book your initial consultation, receive a diagnosis, and if you require ongoing care, we can tailor a course of treatment to fit your clinical needs and lifestyle.

So, what are you waiting for? Book an initial consultation today at our established, independent optometry practice.

New Man

Elevate your personal grooming routine and turn a brave face towards 2026.

In a previous edition, we discussed the complex issue of obesity and the weight loss injections that can be used if you meet certain criteria, but weight loss isn’t just about cutting calories, it’s about nourishing your body, balancing your hormones, and building habits that support lifelong health. The right nutrition plan can help you shed excess weight while boosting your mood and energy levels.

Weight loss goes hand-in-hand with health gain and when you nourish your body with intention and care, the results can go far beyond the scales. By pairing nutrition with regular movement, quality sleep, and stress management, you can make healthier and sustainable lifestyle choices which can result in lasting change.

Weight Loss, Health Gain HEALTH MATTERS

Focussing solely on calories can lead to nutrient gaps so it’s important to prioritise foods that deliver maximum nutrition per bite such as lean proteins and leafy greens. Hydration is the unsung hero of weight loss and drinking two to three litres daily and limiting sugary drinks and excessive caffeine can support metabolism, digestion, and appetite control. A food diary can also be a useful tool as it can help you understand your eating habits and patterns and can map what you eat against how you feel.

Investing in wellness alongside weight loss is a proactive step empowering you to take control of your health before problems arise.

At Pharmacy+Health we offer face-toface appointments to support and guide you through every step of your weight loss/health gain journey. Using body mass composition scales, we can provide a picture

of the percentages of fat, water, muscle, and bone in your body helping you better understand how your weight is distributed.

Our wellbeing blood tests can also monitor health, effectiveness, and safety during your weight loss journey offering information about your health and nutritional status and much more.

Armed with this knowledge you can address any health areas requiring attention, identify risk factors early on, and enhance your overall quality of life.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Saxon Discovery Goes on Display

New illustrations have revealed how a Saxon pendant unearthed in Leeds once looked as the ancient treasure for the first time in more than 1,200 years.

The beautiful, early medieval pectoral cross has gone on display at Leeds City Museum alongside hand drawn images showing how it could have appeared when it was possibly worn around the neck of a church official in the eighth century.

Decorated with a distinctive interlacing Saxon pattern, the pendant was made at a time when Leeds was part of the Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria and is one of several remarkable discoveries.

“Seeing these beautiful illustrations recreate how this tiny pendant might have looked is a rare, vivid glimpse into the past,” said Kat Baxter, Leeds Museums and Galleries’ Curator of Archaeology. “Despite its small size, the pendant is a significant find in terms of helping us to build a more complete picture of life in early medieval Leeds.”

Gallery Becomes Court for Climate Exhibition

A gallery has been transformed into a courtroom as artists put the former British East India Company on trial for historic climate crimes. It is the first time the immersive exhibition, Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes, has been staged in the UK outside of London.

Created by Academic, Writer, and Lawyer Radha D'Souza and Artist and Researcher Jonas Staal, the installation is at Leeds Arts University's Blenheim Walk Gallery. Founded in 1600, the British East India Company started as a trading business but became a powerful force that shaped the history of India and the British Empire.

The exhibition, which runs until 31st January, focuses on the environmental fallout of the company's activities up until its dissolution in 1874.

Inter-Faith Dialogue

The Archbishop of York, the Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell recently delivered the annual lecture to the Leeds branch of the Council of Christians and Jews. He’s believed to be the first archbishop to deliver the lecture which was held in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Dan Cohen, at Leeds Civic Hall.

The archbishop told the audience that in the past few years he has enjoyed strong connections with the Jewish community: “The heart of all inter-faith dialogue is friendship. Until we can get together and know each other as friends we can achieve very little.”

Acknowledging the recent second anniversary of October 7th and the attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, the archbishop said: “We find no words to express the grief I and my colleagues feel. I stand alongside my colleague the Bishop of Manchester in expressing our solidarity with the Jewish community across the whole of the north of England.”

New Funding to Help People into Work

Over £700,000 of funding has been announced for Leeds organisations to provide preemployment support to people who are economically inactive due to health reasons. Managed by Leeds City Council’s employment and skills service, the programme will help over 500 residents find jobs, access training, manage health issues, and overcome barriers to work.

17 voluntary community and social enterprise organisations have been successful in their applications for funding, addressing a broad spectrum of health conditions including mental health, musculoskeletal or cardiovascular conditions, as well as disabilities including learning disabilities. By providing integrated health support alongside employment support, projects will help residents progress towards finding employment.

The funding is administered through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board as part of the Healthy Working Life programme.

GSAL's New Chair of Governors

Charlene Lyons has been appointed as the new Chair of Governors at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), taking over from Angus Martin, who is retiring after over a decade of remarkable service to the school.

Charlene has been a governor for nine years and vice-chair for the past five, and she brings a wealth of experience in leadership, governance, and business. She is currently Deputy CEO at Imparta, a trustee of Leeds Hospitals Charity, and is a longstanding member of the GSAL community. Her new appointment marks a special milestone as GSAL’s first female Chair of Governors.

On her appointment, Charlene said: “It is a privilege to serve as Chair of Governors at GSAL – a school that combines academic excellence with warmth, care, and ambition. As both a parent and governor, I have seen the profound impact that a GSAL education has on its pupils. I look forward to working closely with the principal, my fellow governors, and the wider school community to ensure we continue to provide the best possible start in life for every child.”

New Campaign Tackles Harassment

People are encouraged to report incidents as the Leeds JogOn campaign sends a message that harassment of women and girls while exercising will not be tolerated.

A launch event for the campaign was hosted at the Royal Armouries, with speakers including the Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin and Olympian Athlete Alex Bell. Leeds Dock Running Club then led a run through the city centre finishing at City Square.

Prompted by a survey by Runner’s World magazine which showed that 60% of women runners said they had been harassed when running, the Leeds JogOn campaign is delivered through the Safer Leeds partnership and aims to make outdoor spaces safer and more inclusive.

LJHA Funding for Female Empowerment Project

The Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) has obtained funding for a project to develop creative and empowering solutions to make women and girls feel confident in dealing with domestic abuse and harassment.

The LJHA will be working with Blossom Training to run a series of half-day self-defence and self-empowerment days for women and girls across the community.

Arts and crafts-based activities will allow women to creatively channel emotions, fears, and hopes surrounding violence against women and girls and there will be spoken word/singing sessions themed around safety and wellbeing. The project will be open to women of all ages.

Prepare for driving in heavy rain

It’s always advisable to consider before you set off whether your journey is essential. If not, can it be delayed until after the rain has subsided? If so, then plan your journey in advance, taking care to avoid areas which are prone to flooding, and factor in extra time to allow for slower speeds and potential congestion. It’s also a good idea to let someone know your intended route and expected time of arrival and where possible, travel with others.

Before you go

• Check that your wiper blades are fully functional.

Listen out for local news bulletins to keep up to date with road closures, flooding, and forecasts.

The government is currently aiming to bring in new legislation to change the way some small private sector landlords act. To improve the situations of tenants, for example, who aren’t able to put down roots because their tenancy is only for a fixed period of time, fear of ‘no-fault’ evictions, worrying if reporting the poor condition of the home might count against them or be ignored, whether they can have their pet or if their home security is acceptable, and definitely that the rent won’t suddenly be hiked to an unaffordable level meaning they can’t afford to stay. But these things will take time.

We might not want to hear about these types of issues, but they happen, I’ve met

Through the Rain MOTORING

• Carry a mobile phone in case you encounter any difficulties during your journey.

Check that your tyres are of the recommended legal limit so you can be sure you have a safe amount of grip on the roads.

Driving in rain

• Slow down.

• Use dipped headlights so other drivers can see you more easily.

• Don’t use rear fog lights.

• Look out for large or fast-moving vehicles creating spray.

• If you break down in torrential rain keep the bonnet closed while waiting for help to arrive

If your steering suddenly feels light, you could be aquaplaning. To regain grip, ease off the accelerator, don’t brake, and allow your speed to reduce until you gain full control of the steering again.

Driving through water and floods

• Size up the water first.

If you suspect it’s too deep, or you can't be sure, find another way to your destination.

• If the puddle is shallow enough, look for any objects that may cause damage to your car’s wheels, tyres, or suspension.

• Once you’ve confirmed you can drive through, keep your vehicle in a low gear (second is generally adequate) and engine revved up.

• Once you exit the other side – and especially if the puddle is on the deep side – pause for a moment if you can let any excess water drain away and flow back to where it came from.

It’s always worthwhile gently brushing your brake pedal on exit, creating some friction and heat to evaporate any excess moisture.

Make a Change COMMUNITY HOUSING

many good local people who have gone through these exact scenarios. That’s why at LJHA we’ve been abiding by the government’s high expectations for over 70 years now. We don’t see our houses as ways to make a quick profit at someone else’s expense, we see them as homes for our community members, to raise a family, settle down, or gain more independence in later years. Ultimately to build sustainable neighbourhoods. We know that our homes should be a foundation for life, providing security and assurance, not being temporary or a source of worry.

To further this cause, we are building our newest family homes for a generation at the moment and will welcome new families in

the late spring of next year. So they can lay down their own roots, and have permanent safe and modern houses with a landlord who cares. If this interests you, or someone close to you then it’s not too late to contact us. Let the security and condition of your home be the last thing you need to worry about.

To start that conversation please contact sophie.roberts@ljha.co.uk on 01904 471 066 or email us at info@ljha.co.uk to discuss more.

Out of Our Hands

The only nightmare I recall hearing from my father happened within the last two months of his life. Daddy was asleep in hospital, and he saw himself slipping away. He awoke startled, scared, and shaking. Looking down, he saw himself and his bedding covered in blood. He arose, fixed the issue and quietly cleaned up the results of a terrible mistake made by the nurse the evening before. He silently changed the bedsheets, put away the evidence of her negligence, and then returned to bed, totally exhausted.

The next morning, he was approached by the consultant who knelt at his bedside, leant in and said: “Which nurse did you have last night?” Daddy kept quiet. The consultant asked again. My father looked up and said simply: “I’m not getting anyone in trouble. We are all human, and we all make mistakes.” The two nurses standing behind the consultant were visibly shocked at his response. A while later, the consultant returned, guaranteed my father that the nurse would not be reprimanded, and requested the name for safety purposes. Satisfied, Daddy whispered the name of the individual.

Mummy asked him later on that evening why he refused to divulge the name. Daddy stated simply: “I don’t want to cause any chillul Hashem (desecration of G-ds name) by causing harm to a gentile.”

What a father. What a teacher. In such a situation, to have the clarity of mind to see beyond downright medical negligence and tremendous personal suffering, to remember that there’s a larger reality with Hashem at the top – our family were left speechless.

Some months ago, Julie Kupershtein’s phone began ringing, and she found herself speaking to a terrorist. He began threatening her: “If you ever want to see your son again, you need to start rallying against the Israeli government. You need to travel to the Hague to accuse Israeli soldiers of war crimes. If you don’t, you will never see your son again.” Initially, she was terrified – she was speaking to one of the animals who stormed into Israel

and kidnapped her son.

Julie related that she was then overcome with an awesome realisation that the terrorist on the other side of the line had no power over her son: “My son isn’t in your hands,” she told him. “He is only in the hands of the creator of the universe.” She then added: “And you are also in the hands of the creator of the universe.” After hearing her fearless response, the terrorist was quiet for a few seconds and then said three short words: “Kol Hakavod Giveret” (Mrs, you have my respect).

A few days ago, with tears rolling down my face, I watched the amazing reunion between Bar Kupershtein and his parents. What a mother. What a teacher. In such a situation, to have the clarity of mind to see beyond pure evil, deep personal suffering and anguish, and then to recall that there is a larger reality with Hashem at the top – our nation is left speechless.

As events unfold before our eyes, as pain and suffering sear through our people’s heart, time and time again we are shown by ‘normal’ incredible individuals that there is only one real way through the terror, torment, lies, and hatred. To recognise that while the situation may be beyond our control, it isn’t out of control.

While we may not understand the why, we must believe and trust in the who – our loving father above, who is really the only one directing the course of history. It is only a people who tap into this supernatural reality who merit the supernatural.

We hope and pray that it won’t be much longer until the curtain hiding Hashem is dropped, transforming our shocking nightmare into the sweetest of dreams.

May this piece be a source of merit to elevate the soul of my dear father R’ Yaakov Yisroel ben Ahron Shmuel, as we approach his first yartzeit.

Rabbi Doniel Stern of the community Kollel discusses lessons of courage, compassion, and unwavering trust amid life’s deepest trials.

As the clocks go back and the days get shorter, there’s an increase in accidents, including road traffic accidents and slips on a hazardous pavement. If you’re injured and it wasn’t your fault, here’s what you need to know…

Firstly, seek medical help. Your health

Slips, Trips, and Bumps in the Dark PERSONAL INJURY

comes first so even if the injuries seem minor, it’s important to get checked out. Should your injuries be serious and you decide to make a claim, it’s best to get legal advice early, especially if your injury affects your work or daily life, as there’s usually a threeyear time limit.

Gather your evidence

For road accidents, get the other driver’s details including name, registration number, and insurance. If you slip or fall, report it to the business, council, or property owner so it’s officially recorded.

Take photos of the scene, especially if there’s a hazard such as a pothole or uneven pavement. Use a ruler or tape measure to show depth, which may mean going back to the place of the incident and getting the information you need.

Take the contact details from any witnesses, as independent witness evidence can be particularly useful.

Power of Light

Chanukah is my favourite time of year –eating doughnuts and latkes guilt-free! It’s my religion, you see. Plus, I save a fortune on my notorious electricity bill, as out come the candles. Octopus Energy probably think I’ve moved!

Aside from cholesterol concerns and enjoying Street Lane Bakery – what’s Chanukah even about? Imagine watching D-Day, 1944: hundreds of thousands of allied troops pouring onto the beaches with the finest weaponry to fight the Nazis. Suddenly, you notice one guy in plain clothes running straight toward the blazing Nazi machine guns armed with nothing but a truncheon. You’d think he’d lost his marbles, was suicidal, or suffering from PTSD. Yet somehow, he dodges the bullets and wipes out scores of enemy infantries. You’d pinch yourself, because that’s not supposed to be possible.

But that’s essentially what happened; just years earlier, when a few Chashmonaim took on the mighty Greek army… and won. Crazy, right?

How did they merit such a miracle? The Greeks had banned keeping the Sabbath,

performing circumcision, and following the lunar cycle. The first two are easy to understand – they’re core parts of our identity and covenant with G-d. But the lunar cycle sounds random, right? It’s not, it’s deep.

The Chashmonaim could have said: “Too bad – nothing we can do.” But instead, they said: “No way, sire. We’re not going to be complicit in erasing our Judaism. We’ll fight.” Suicidal? Maybe. But what’s the point of living if we can’t hold on to our foundations? They fought – and they won. And won again.

Stand up for the right thing, and good things happen. You’ll realise you’re not the weak person you thought you were – but rather, Dwayne Johnson on steroids.

And maybe that’s the modern challenge too – not letting convenience quietly erode conviction. Whether it’s swapping our phones for smartwatches in shul (because ‘technically’ it’s not the same thing) or finding clever loopholes around principle – Chanukah reminds us that light doesn’t bend to darkness; it pushes back against it.

Keep records

• Save receipts for expenses relate to your injury

• Note your medical appointments and treatments

• Keep a diary of how your injury affects your everyday life

Document your recovery

Record any help you’ve received from family and friends

It may seem onerous, but these details can make all the difference in a successful claim and it’s much easier than doing this as you go along, rather than trying to remember what happened in the past.

Our knowledgeable and caring personal injury team can guide you if you’ve been injured and want to know if you can make a claim.

Did you know Chanukah is celebrated differently in some communities around the world? We check out some global traditions.

While the central traditions of Chanukah such as lighting the menorah and remembering the miracle of the oil remain the same across Jewish communities, the festival takes on wonderfully different expressions around the world. Over time, Jewish communities in every corner of the globe have woven their own flavours, songs, foods, and customs into the celebration.

Mexico

In Mexico, Chanukah is known as Janucá or Lucenarias, meaning ‘the feast of lights.’ The holiday blends Jewish and Mexican culture in unique ways. Children play a traditional game called toma todo (winner takes all), which resembles a dreidel but uses a six-sided top called a pirinola. Each side instructs the player to take or give pieces from the pot, and the excitement builds as children shout and laugh over the spinning toy. Adding a festive local twist, Mexican Jewish families sometimes celebrate by breaking open a dreidel-shaped piñata filled with sweets and small trinkets. When the piñata bursts, the scramble for chocolate coins and treats brings an explosion of joy – turning the miracle of light into a celebration of abundance and community.

Morocco

In Morocco, the joy of Chanukah extends beyond the usual eight nights with a unique celebration known as ‘the day of the shamash,’ a ninth day dedicated to the helper candle of the menorah. Children collect leftover candles from neighbours’ homes, and these are gathered to create a giant bonfire in the centre of the community. Families sing, dance, and leap around the flames, and some even jump directly over the fire in the belief that it brings good luck. This tradition takes on an added layer of meaning for single women, who hope that leaping across the flames might bless them with marriage, and for those struggling to conceive, who see the ritual as a prayer for fertility.

India

In India, Chanukah celebrations carry their own distinct character, shaped by local flavours and traditions. For centuries, the Indian Jewish communities – such as the Bene Israel and Cochin Jews – saw the festival as a reminder of miracles and as a reflection of India itself, which served as a refuge for Jews escaping persecution elsewhere. Instead of wax candles, Indian Jews dip wicks in fragrant coconut oil, producing a soft, glowing light. The festive table is also different; rather than traditional latkes, families prepare batata bhaji, a spiced onion-and-potato fritter, alongside barfi, a rich milk-based sweet flavoured with fruits or nuts. These foods carry the taste of India while honouring the universal festival spirit.

North Africa

Across some parts of North Africa, Chanukah takes on a deeply meaningful dimension on the seventh night with Chag HaBanot, or ‘Festival of the Daughters.’ This special evening celebrates Jewish women, drawing inspiration from heroines of the past. Hannah, who sacrificed her seven sons rather than renounce her faith, and Judith, who used her wit and courage to defeat an enemy general, are remembered and honoured. Families gather to tell these stories, and young girls receive blessings and gifts in recognition of their role in carrying Jewish tradition forward. This celebration underscores the power of women in Jewish history and keeps alive tales of bravery and devotion.

Two friends explore the peculiarities of British Jewish life in their authentic, uplifting podcast, Nisht for Me.

When Manchester’s Arron Ferster and Abigail Radnor launched their podcast celebrating British Jewish life, they expected their friends and family to listen – at least for a while. What they didn't anticipate was feedback from Jewish and non-Jewish listeners both in the UK and America, and a growing community of fans who've discovered what the longtime friends felt to be true: there's something special and necessary about sharing Jewish joy.

"We're shocked really," laughs the duo, who've been friends for over 30 years. "The feedback has been really lovely and from surprising places. Someone on a ranch in Texas keeps commenting on our YouTube videos, saying it feels local to them even though they're all the way over there."

The podcast emerged from the dark days following October 7th, when the pair found their conversations becoming increasingly depressing: "Everything we talked about was centred around what we're reading and what was frustrating and upsetting us," Arron explains. "It was taking its toll, as it did on so many."

In response, they decided to create something that puts Jewish joy out there, and so Nisht for Me was born: "We don't pretend that October 7th never happened, and we don't pretend that antisemitism doesn't exist," Abigail clarifies. "It's just that we don't dwell on it. There are so many other content providers that do great analysis and reporting. That's not what this is here to do."

Both Abigail and Arron were members of the Habonim Dror Jewish youth movement, both have married Mancunians, and have children the same age, keeping them socially close. The pair's long friendship provides the authentic dynamic that listeners respond to. But what makes Nisht for Me resonate so widely is its ability to blend hyper-local Jewish references with universal themes: "A lot of the stuff we get under the bonnet of is really about relationships, family, and friendships," Abigail says. “The episode on sitting Shiva, while uniquely Jewish in practice, explores the broader theme of friendship during tough times. It's about universal themes with a Jewish hue and works across the board.”

"Lots of people say that the wedding episode is a particular favourite," says Arron. "After we finished recording, we were like, 'Oh God, I'd love to go to a good simcha!' You remember all the good stuff. Jews are great at celebrating."

Arron is a writer and producer, a former Manchester Grammar School pupil who read history at Oxford, and now works on television series including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, QI,

and Keith Lemon’s Through the Keyhole

Withington Grirls’ alumni Abigail, who read English Literature and American Studies at the University of Birmingham, has worked for various fashion magazines and is now lifestyle editor for The Guardian’s Saturday magazine. The hosts bring professional creative backgrounds to the project but they've deliberately kept the production relaxed: "We have a loose script for each podcast, just so we have some sort of structure, but we're not tied to it," Arron explains. "We'll often have an idea, and then we'll literally just jot down a few points. That becomes the podcast."

This casual approach is also present in their social media: "We joke about the fact that we're like two Yiddish grandmas trying to work out social media," Abigail laughs. "There’s a lot of panicky messages back and forth just going, 'I don't know how to do this!'"

Having wrapped their first series of 10 shows, they're already planning series two for December, including Chanukah specials. They're also looking to expand their guest roster, having already hosted Abigail's fellow Guardian journalist, Jonathan Freedland.

As they look ahead to the future of the podcast, the two aren’t worried about running short of inspiration and material. They’re keen to keep talking and discovering new areas to explore: "Hope and joy – it's been hard to come by, but it's what keeps people ticking," Arron reflects. In creating Nisht for Me, he and Abigail have tapped into something communities everywhere needed: a reminder that celebrating Jewish life, with all its quirks and joys, is itself an act of resilience.

Celebration Time

As the festive season gets into full swing, we look at some popular themed party ideas to make your bash go off with a bang.

Whether you're organising a festive workplace do, a large-scale family and friends’ occasion, or an intimate gathering, this year's party trends draw inspiration from nature, culture, and the worlds of fashion and entertainment.

The enchanted forest theme is becoming ever more popular, transforming any venue into a mystical woodland haven. This immersive concept blends abundant foliage, twinkling fairy lights, rustic elements, and mythical creatures to create an ethereal atmosphere that guests won't forget.

To pull off this elaborate aesthetic, incorporate natural materials including wooden features, pinecones, and moss, bringing the outdoors in. Create pathways through your venue, leading guests through your secret landscape to discover themed areas and activities. Furniture in natural tones combine with soft rugs to provide relaxed seating areas, while warm, soft lighting creates that essential mystical ambience.

For something brighter and more energetic, the Candyland theme delivers pure festive fun. This playful concept uses bold colours – candy pink, peppermint red, and icy blue – to create an atmosphere of childlike wonder and excitement. Include lollipop-style decorations throughout your space, multi-coloured draping and ceiling canopies, and vibrant candy cane archways. For a unique twist, blend in Alice

in Wonderland elements with green and pink lighting, oversized animal props, and whimsical entertainment. Alternatively, emphasise the playful aspects with a toyland Christmas theme, combining candy canes with oversized toy props and magical decorations.

A circus theme combines vibrant colours and exciting performances with festive spirit – for parties where entertainment takes centre stage. Bold stripes, polka dots, and bright colours recreate the fun of a circus tent, while creative stage design can incorporate a big-top-style centrepiece for performances.

With this theme, entertainment is key: acrobats, jugglers, and magicians can perform stage shows or mingle with guests throughout the evening. Even your catering can embrace the theme with red and white striped circus-style food stalls. This high-energy concept creates an unforgettable atmosphere that keeps guests engaged all night.

Celebrate the best of the 70s, 80s, and 90s with a retro throwback

theme that's filled with vintage decor, classic music, and iconic fashion. Neon lights and disco balls are essential for creating that authentic retro atmosphere, while vintage posters from your chosen era provide perfect backdrops.

Music naturally plays a huge role – whether through a DJ or live band performing era-specific hits. For ultimate retro glamour, consider the ever-popular Great Gatsby theme, bringing 1920s elegance and sophistication to your celebration.

For something extravagant and glamorous, the sparkle theme uses glittering ornaments, sequinned tablecloths, and statement chandeliers to create a luxurious

atmosphere. Rich colours like emerald, green, ruby red, gold, and silver set the tone, while textures including velvet, satin, and metallics add sophistication. Strategic lighting can bring sparkly elements to life, with light reflecting off surfaces to create that coveted festive glow.

Whether you're drawn to over-the-top maximalism or understated elegance, this festive season offers endless opportunities to express your personal style – mix and match elements that speak to you, creating a festive party atmosphere that feels timelessly magical.

In recent years, Leeds' Jewish community has had to look beyond the city for kosher catering options, often turning to Manchester or London-based companies for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and celebrations. But that's changing. Dana Llewellyn recently launched Gefen Catering under the Beth Din with help from Rabbi Anthony Gilbert, and her very first event was catering the LJWB Pride Awards.

"It went really well,” Dana says. “I got some really great feedback. It was very busy – a lot of preparation involved. But from what I've heard, everybody enjoyed the food."

An auspicious debut, but Dana comes to the role with impressive credentials having spent seven years working at Taste & Colour, one of Israel's biggest catering companies, where she honed her skills at large-scale events; Israeli weddings are known to be grand affairs with 400 to 600 guests as standard.

"So, I definitely know what I'm doing," she laughs. "But the Pride Awards was my first big kosher event in England, working at Etz Chaim Synagogue with Rabbi Gilbert as my supervisor."

Gefen's approach is all about abundance and joy. Rather than formal plated dinners, Dana specialises in what she calls a 'feast buffet' – long tables filled with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, designed for gatherings from 40 to 300 people.

"It's mainly fresh, colourful, happy food," Dana explains. "Obviously we do fried stuff, but it's really important to me to also show that salads and fruits can be tasty. It looks good and it makes you feel great after you eat it as well."

The menu features plenty of salads, bread, dips, and main dishes, all based on fresh local ingredients. Whether it's an anniversary, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or a wedding, she tailors the spread to the occasion.

Community Feast

"First I talk with the customer and see what they're looking for," she says. "We customise the menu for each event. It's all based on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food."

As the only kosher caterer currently operating in Leeds, Dana is conscious of her responsibility to the community. She's committed to keeping prices reasonable, despite kosher ingredients often being more expensive, particularly meat: "I want to be as fair as I can and not overcharge people. My focus, honestly, is to make people happy. I just like to feed people and see people enjoying my food. That's what Gefen is all about."

Dana has managed to capitalise on a gap in the market but acknowledges Gefen Catering won’t be the only game in town for long: "I know it's going to change really soon, which is not a bad thing. Competition is always good."

The response has been encouraging. Dana's diary is already filling out, with bookings extending into summer 2026. Many in the community may already know Dana from Shouk, her Israeli street food venture which has operated at various festivals and venues, recently at Trinity Kitchen in Leeds. The business has built a loyal following, particularly for its authentic Tel Aviv-style falafel – made to Dana's secret recipe.

While Gefen Catering is keeping Dana busy, she has bigger ambitions: "I'm hoping in the future to open a cafe so people can just come and enjoy the food whenever they want," she says. "They don't need to wait for some kind of celebration. I want to slowly build the brand. People know me already so it's a great foundation."

EVENT PLANNING

On Trend

Go

bold

Let’s take a look at some wedding trends growing in popularity ahead of 2026…

Sustainability

There’s been a huge upward tick towards couples asking for weddings planned with sustainability at heart. Environmental footprint is at the forefront of many couple’s minds. Think biodegradable decor, recyclable stationery or digital invitations, plasticfree events, reusable floral arrangements, and locally sourced menus. There’s also a big emphasis on ‘no wastage’, with one of our latest couples kindly donating all their leftover wedding breakfast food to a local homeless shelter.

Bold and expressive colour palettes are creating a statement, with décor chosen so that everything is seen, enjoyed, and remembered. Big, bright styles mark the true party spirit that many are deciding to embrace on their special day. Vibrant colours are a huge trend for 2026, and vintage and heirloom details will also feature strongly in the coming year.

Multi-day and experience led

Celebrations are now stretching beyond one single day to include welcome parties, brunches, barbeques, and other activities to create a more personalised and meaningful time to your wedding. This gives the wedding couple as well as their guests more time to enjoy the whole experience, creating deeper connections with their closest loved ones.

Details, details, details

Identity and intimacy are the key words. Small thoughtful touches to make guests feel valued; handwritten messages, personalised playlists, or late-night snacks reflect and are inspired by

the couple and their story. Every single guest is made to feel special and part of the couple’s world.

Alternative weddings

Where you choose to hold your wedding has changed in recent years. Couples are now enjoying much more unique venues including warehouses, vineyards, and barns. These spaces offer blank canvases for creative flourishes meaning you can transform the venues to reflect your own individual style. The use of lush foliage and using the surroundings as inspiration adds both elegance and individuality while complementing many types of wedding themes.

At Shenderey Events, we take that weight off your mind, with everything from formal details to finishing touches handled to perfection. Whether you’re ready to party or looking for simple sophistication, with us at the helm all that’s left for you to do is celebrate your marriage in the way you truly deserve.

When Louise Williams' father died in 2001, his wish was clear: no religious ceremony. Searching for someone who could honour his life, the family came upon humanist celebrants – professionals who create deeply personal, non-religious ceremonies for life's most significant moments: "I said to myself then, 'One day I will do that,'" Louise recalls. "And that's exactly what I did."

After almost 40 years working in human resources, Louise retired four years ago to become a Humanist Celebrant. Drawing on her background in performing arts and her skill as an empathetic communicator, she now serves families across Yorkshire creating ceremonies that truly resonate.

Louise's journey reflects a broader cultural shift. According to the 2021 census, 72% of young people between 18 and 24 identified as non-religious. Many describe themselves as spiritual without subscribing to any organised religion – a distinction that resonates especially within communities where cultural identity and religious practice don't necessarily always go hand-in-hand. Indeed Louise has worked with Jewish families and the wider community here in North Leeds.

“Humanist ceremonies offer a way to mark life's milestones that feels authentic to who they are," Louise points out. The movement recently achieved a significant milestone when the government committed to legal recognition of humanist marriages in England and Wales.

Louise specialises in weddings, funerals and celebrations of life, naming ceremonies, and vow renewals – each completely bespoke:

How Louise Williams is helping people find non-religious ways to mark life’s most meaningful moments.

"I believe in the power of storytelling and personal connection. I take the time to get to know a couple or family – their story, their values, their vision. Then I create a ceremony with them that reflects who they are. No two ceremonies are the same."

For weddings and namings, Louise uses detailed questionnaires followed by meetings lasting up to two hours, and for funerals, she spends much time listening to family stories. With traditional funerals costing upwards of £4,500, many now choose direct cremation followed by a memorial service in a venue of their choice –without crematorium time constraints.

Louise's work often involves navigating different beliefs within families: "I find couples where they themselves might be religious, but they want to honour the wishes of a loved one who wasn't. Sometimes it's a compromise because one partner might be religious and the other isn't."

and offering guidance – all without charge. "A few weeks later, he came back to me," she recalls. "He said I'd been so helpful and wanted to book me for the ceremony. That's

what this work is about – being there for people when they need support and helping them create something beautiful from even the most difficult moments."

Her ceremonies can incorporate religious elements if they hold significance but remain centred on the people being celebrated. She notes that guests often say it's the best wedding they've attended – and are surprised to learn she hadn’t known the couple before planning began, with the same said about funerals.

Louise's approach is exemplified in a recent phone call she received from a man whose father had died just two hours earlier. Louise spent time walking him through all his options, recommending funeral directors,

Looking ahead, Louise sees potential for humanist ceremonies to expand into new areas – divorce ceremonies, adult name changes, and celebrations for blended families: "We're already seeing naming ceremonies used for these purposes."

Build Concierge, the customer engagement platform based in Thorpe Park near Leeds, has raised £3.8 million in seed funding from a consortium of private investors. The deal values the year-old start-up at £35 million.

The venture has built an AI-enabled customer engagement platform, helping businesses to automate customer communications across every channel, using email, text, WhatsApp, chat and voice. The software boosts productivity and helps businesses to scale rapidly and profitably.

The fourth business entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist Martin Port – who has been building B2B software for almost 30 years – Build Concierge has raised £3.8m in growth finance from angel investors, high net worths, and Martin himself. Alongside the investment, the company has announced the appointment of several industry heavyweights to its board, bringing extensive industry experience from Build Concierge's target sectors.

New Space to at Kirkgate Market

STACK, the leisure operator with venues constructed from repurposed shipping containers, is coming to Leeds Kirkgate Market with construction likely to begin soon.

STACK Leeds will be spread across two floors, with a central plaza seating area covered by a ‘stretch tent’ providing shelter from the elements. The space will feature a busy programme of live music and entertainment, while 10 street food outlets, six bars, and a coffee shop will serve up a tempting range of refreshments for customers.

The development – expected to create 160 jobs – is anticipated to increase footfall and broaden the customer base for the whole market site.

“We’re delighted to be bringing STACK to Leeds,” said STACK Chief Executive Officer, Neill Winch. “This is a city with incredible energy and a proud sense of community, which makes it a perfect location for our concept. We’re excited to work with Leeds City Council to deliver a destination that adds real value to Kirkgate Market and the city centre.”

Recent improvements at the market include an ongoing £10 million project to repair, conserve, and enhance the 1875 ‘blockshops’, the oldest surviving structures on the site.

Leeds Outpaces London

New analysis from The Data City shows that Leeds is emerging as a leading hub for artificial intelligence growth in the UK. Local AI firms are expanding their workforce by 22% annually, far exceeding London’s 7.2% and the national average of 4.8%.

“These figures show how Leeds has become one of the most exciting centres for AI in the country,” said Alex Craven, Co-Founder of The Data City. “The city is not only creating jobs at a faster rate than London but also developing the kind of diverse and resilient ecosystem needed to compete internationally.”

AI is just one area of rapid growth in Leeds. The city is also seeing expansion in sports and physical activities, software development, net zero, data infrastructure, digital creative industries, life sciences, and the agency market.

Ambitious Economic Vision

An ambitious 10-year economic plan has been launched for Leeds, setting out a roadmap to generate £20 billion in economic growth and create 100,000 new jobs across the city.

Future projects include the £160 million expansion of the Royal Armouries Museum, the Elland Road stadium expansion and regeneration, along with the mixed-use development at Aire Park which features the UK’s largest new city centre park and is supported by over £40 million of infrastructure. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s plans for mass transit and improved connectivity puts Leeds in a very strong position for accelerated growth.

The vision identifies three key sectors for focused growth and investment: financial and professional services, digital and tech, and health and health tech.

“Building on two decades of clear momentum, the launch of our Economic Vision and Delivery Plan gives us the roadmap for accelerating success and delivering measurable outcomes for our communities,” said Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Deputy Leader and Executive Board Member for Economy, Transport, and Sustainable Development for Leeds City Council.

Lifted Women Angels Conference

The Lifted Women Angels Conference, which celebrates and empowers women in early stage investing, will take place on 30th January at Aspire Leeds.

Reinforcing the North’s growing position as a hub for women-led investment and innovation, the conference follows the success of its sold-out 2025 debut, expanding into a larger, more accessible city-centre venue.

The event aims to nurture the next generation of women angel investors, providing a powerful platform to learn, connect, and become part of a community that’s driving investment in female-led businesses.

“Increasing the capacity of women in angel investing is key to unlocking more capital for female founders,” said Jordan Dargue, CoFounder of Lifted Ventures. “By supporting, educating, and empowering potential women investors, we can build a more inclusive and dynamic investment landscape that benefits everyone.”

“Our goal is to demystify angel investing and show women that they already have what it takes to become successful investors,” added Co-Founder Helen Oldham. “The Lifted Women Angels Conference is a catalyst and a space where curiosity turns into confidence and real impact.”

According to recent Invest in Women Code data, angel networks with over 15% female investors directed 57% of their investments toward female-founded or mixed-gender teams, highlighting the powerful role women play in reshaping the investment landscape.

Israeli Start Up Combats Digital Impersonation

Digital deception is becoming more sophisticated by the day, which is why Israeli start-up, Memcyco, is taking a bold stand against online impersonation and fraud.

Founded by Israeli entrepreneur Israel Mazin and headquartered in Bnei Brak, the company has emerged as a global innovator in real-time scam detection and prevention.

Mazin found that existing solutions to phishing and impersonation were reactive, slow, and often ineffective: “We spoke to potential clients and realised they had no real-time protection. They could detect scams, but they couldn’t stop them fast enough.”

Memcyco’s platform delivers real-time, pre-emptive protection against phishing, digital impersonation, and account takeover fraud, helping companies safeguard their businesses and customers. The company’s technology also addresses the growing threat of generative AIpowered scams. Its solution is fast and scalable, can be deployed in minutes, and serves small, medium, and large enterprises.

Memcyco is aiming for a balanced global footprint, expanding into new markets and further developing its solutions.

With the backing of American Express, the campaign has reached millions of people across the UK, generating billions of pounds spent with independent operators, and spreading a simple but powerful message: help small businesses thrive!

To kick off this year's campaign, organisers have unveiled the SmallBiz100 – a 100-

day countdown showcasing the UK's most inspiring independent entrepreneurs for 2025. The line-up demonstrates the diversity and innovation of small business across every sector.

Leeds has long been a buzzing hub of independent spirit and nowhere exemplifies this more than the Corn Exchange. This architectural landmark has been home to independent traders since 1988.

Step inside and you'll discover an eclectic treasure trove of independent businesses. Fashion-forward shoppers can explore Mki Miyuki Zoku for contemporary Japanese streetwear, or All Blues Co., the first UK store to showcase high-profile Korean menswear brands.

Small Business, Big Impact!

We celebrate Small Business Saturday, which takes place on 6th December, with a look around the iconic Corn Exchange in Leeds.

Book lovers will find sanctuary at Colours May Vary, an independent bookshop and gallery where rainbow-hued shelves showcase everything from quirky cookbooks and architecture magazines to classic literature with imaginatively reworked covers. Meanwhile, Indie Makers trades in art and gifts from independent creators across the UK, and On the Wall pairs expert framing with prints, posters, and gifts.

The Sculpture Gallery offers an outstanding showcase of pure sculpture from its six owners and guest artists. And if you're looking to bring the jungle into your urban space, Plant Point has the perfect greenery for you.

For drinks and light bites, Bruschetta, a cosy coffee shop and café in the main atrium, serves a seasonal menu made with locally sourced ingredients from nearby Kirkgate market. The Cheesy Living Co. tempts with

delicious focaccia sandwiches and selections of local cheeses and charcuterie to take home.

More than just a retail destination, the Corn Exchange is a space where creativity and community converge. It's become an incubator for entrepreneurial dreams, offering a unique environment for independent traders to establish themselves and flourish within the stunning backdrop of Victorian architecture.

The building truly embodies what the Corn Exchange describes as its mission: "A living Leeds landmark. A beacon of creativity shining against the mainstream. A historic centre of commerce reimagined for a new century. Generation upon generation of memories and shopping bags full of stories."

The Corn Exchange is a shining example of what Small Business Saturday is all about: creativity, individuality, community, and the importance of supporting local economies. Many successful businesses have launched from units within its historic walls, proving that with the right environment and customer support, small enterprises don't just survive –they flourish and become cultural landmarks.

Despite ongoing economic challenges, there are encouraging signs for the UK's 5.45 million small firms. According to American Express' 'SME Barometer' research, conducted in partnership with Small Business Saturday, optimism among small and medium-sized businesses has grown for a third consecutive year.

Supporting small businesses is vitally necessary beyond just one day in December, though Small Business Saturday offers a

perfect focal point to mark the day with special events, promotions, and community gatherings – making it an ideal opportunity to discover new favourites or show appreciation for established local heroes.

Small Business Saturday reminds us of the power and significance of independents. These aren't faceless corporations; they're passionate individuals who've struck out on their own to build something meaningful. They're your neighbours, friends, and the people who'll remember who you are and what you like. So, use them, let's not lose them!

FROM BAGELS TO THE BIGTIME

A UK-Israel trade mission, an exciting property business acquisition, and an epic entrepreneurial journey were all on the menu at the latest UKIB breakfast meeting.

The latest UK Israel Business breakfast brought together Leeds' business community for an inspiring morning of insights, announcements, and entrepreneurial wisdom. Held at the MAZ Community Centre, the event featured two GSAL alumni, Hunter Price International CEO Jeremy Winburn in conversation with Mark Manning, Group MD of Northern Estate Agencies.

The morning began with the announcement a 2026 UK-Israel trade mission, developed in partnership with the Israeli Embassy in London. Leeds’ Lord Mayor, Councillor Dan Cohen has expressed interest in leading the mission during his term of office.

Russell Manning, who has visited Israel twice since October 7th 2023, offered powerful testimony about the country's resilience. Speaking about his volunteer work on a tomato farm and visits to affected communities, he summarised Israel in four words: dynamic, resilient, opportunity, vibrant, and the phrase "life goes on." Israel's reputation as the 'start-up nation' makes it an attractive partner for UK businesses, with world-leading sectors including cybersecurity, AI, biotech, fintech, and clean energy.

The breakfast celebrated one of LRG's most significant acquisitions, with the industry

giant snapping up Northern Estate Agencies Group in a deal that unites Manning Stainton, Ryder & Dutton, and Mortimers under one family. The acquisition brings together 36 locations across West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, and Greater Manchester, with all 400 staff retained and existing brand names preserved.

Mark Manning, who continues as Group MD while remaining a shareholder, expressed excitement about the partnership: "We are working with LRG, a business we have long admired. Their commitment to local brands working alongside great people, together with the work they do within our communities, aligns with our own values." Russell Manning will retire but remain as a consultant.

The morning's highlight was the discussion of Jeremy Winburn's entrepreneurial journey. His career in commerce began at age 10, when he’d pick up 200 bagels from a bakery every Sunday to sell at school. A defining moment came from a teacher, who, having caught Jeremy misbehaving, said: "Right, young man. Let's negotiate your punishment." That eureka moment taught Jeremy that "everything's negotiable."

After university hustles, Jeremy and business partner Josh launched Hunter Price in 2009 with £12,000 each. Their first deal netted just £37, but enough for a tank of petrol,

Jeremy observed, looking on the bright side.

The double-whammy of crises that were Brexit and COVID ended up becoming transformational opportunities. When Brexit threatened their European clearance model, they pivoted to signing their own licenses with Disney, Crayola, and other major brands. The company now holds 35 licenses.

COVID proved even more dramatic. Just as a major client cancelled orders and Jeremy contemplated closure, he excelled with the store groups that were able to stay open.

Hunter Price has since opened offices in China and the United States and distributes its products in Australia, Japan, and across southeast Asia. Their Chinese facility employs 15 people focused solely on quality control. The 150-employee company now serves major retailers across multiple continents, with Europe next on the expansion roadmap.

When asked about pride in his achievements, Jeremy remains humble: "I'm not proud yet. There's definitely more ground to cover."

Wrapping things up, Mark asked Jeremy what advice he would pass on: "It's good to dream, but don't be a dreamer,” Jeremy said. “Try writing your own imagined obituary and then set about reverse engineering it."

The UK’s tax landscape is undergoing a major transformation with the phased rollout of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax SelfAssessment (MTD for ITSA). Starting in April 2026, HMRC will require certain taxpayers to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates using approved software.

By introducing this, HMRC aims to reduce tax errors, improve compliance, and modernise the tax system. It also promises benefits for taxpayers, including better financial visibility, reduced admin burden, and fewer last-minute tax submissions.

While the transition may seem daunting, MTD offers an opportunity to streamline tax processes and improve financial

Going Digital FINANCE

management. As HMRC continues to refine its digital services, embracing MTD now could set you up for long-term success in a more connected tax environment.

Who will be affected?

Initially, self-employed individuals and landlords with gross income of over £50,000 will be mandated to comply from April 2026. The threshold will drop to £30,000 in April 2027, and again to £20,000 in April 2028. Qualifying income includes gross earnings from self-employment and property before expenses or allowances.

What are the requirements?

Under MTD, affected taxpayers must keep digital records of income and expenses using HMRC-recognised software, submit quarterly updates to HMRC summarising year-to-date financial data, and file a final declaration at year-end to confirm accuracy and make adjustments.

Traditional paper records and spreadsheets will no longer be sufficient unless integrated with bridging software, which offers a solution for those still reliant on spreadsheets.

Preparing for the change

With less than six months until the first phase begins, we urge individuals and businesses to act now. This includes reviewing your income levels to determine if you’ll be affected by the first phase and selecting MTD-compatible software. You should also speak to a professional regarding digital record-keeping and quarterly submissions if you need guidance with this change. There’s also an option of participating in HMRC’s public testing programme which enables you to trial the system and take the pressure off learning a new system all at once.

Important reminder

The 31st January 2026 deadline for filing your self-assessment tax return online is fast approaching. Act now – get your return drafted or send your information to your accountant immediately to avoid penalties. Don’t delay! If MTD has left you in a haze and/or you need help with your tax return, get in touch with Leon and Company Chartered Accountants… We crunch numbers, you get clarity.

A Good View

There are some huge TV shows, films, and books being released over the next couple of months so sit back, get cosy, and enjoy some of our top picks for all the family!

Stranger Things | Netflix 27th November, 25th and 31st December

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will release on Netflix across three premiere dates. It’s autumn 1987 in Hawkins and the town is scarred by the opening of the Rifts. The heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming – and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone standing together, one last time.

Amadeus | Sky and NOW 21st December

Based on Peter Shaffer’s stage play, this five-part reimagination explores the rise and downfall of one of history’s most iconic composers and rockstar virtuoso of the 18th century, Wolfgang ‘Amadeus’ Mozart. When 25-year-old Amadeus arrives in Vienna, his world collides with two pivotal figures: his fiercely loyal future wife and a devoutly religious court composer, Antonio Salieri. As Amadeus’ brilliance continues to flourish despite his personal demons, a questionable reputation, and scepticism from the conservative court, Salieri becomes increasingly tormented by his gift. What begins as professional rivalry turns into a deeply personal obsession spanning 30 years.

Never-Ending Tales: Stories from the Golden Age of Jewish Literature

Jack Zipes | 2nd December

Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jewish writers in Europe and America published countless stories addressing ‘the Jewish Question’ – the intense debate about the treatment of Jews following their so-called emancipation. In NeverEnding Tales, Jack Zipes presents a number of these stories, which attempted to subvert the antisemitism that the debate represented. Humorous, bittersweet, and filled with ironic reversals, this anthology book contains stories of fantasy, magic, and transformation.

Eleanor the Great | In cinemas from 12th December

In this new drama film, June Squibb brings to vivid life the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who after a devastating loss, tells a tale that takes on a dangerous life of its own. Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.

Avatar: Fire and Ash | In cinemas from 19th December

James Cameron is taking audiences back to Pandora in the third film in the phenomenally successful ‘Avatar’ franchise. This new immersive adventure follows marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Scully, Na’vi warrior Neytiri, and their family as they grapple with grief after Neteyam's death, encountering a new and aggressive Na'vi tribe –the Ash People – who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.

HOLE IN ONE IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

We spoke to Elaine Simon, one of the new captains at Moor Allerton Golf Club.

Moor Allerton Golf Club has proudly welcomed two new Jewish captains – Elaine Simon and Howard Somers – who are both thrilled about bringing a welcoming, vibrant, and friendly atmosphere to the club

Founded in 1923 by Abe Frais, Hyman Morris, and Louis Godlove, the club was established in response to Jewish golfers being denied membership at other clubs. Moor Allerton went on to become Europe’s first golf club founded with a distinctly Jewish ethos, paving the way for inclusion and community in the sport.

Nowadays, anyone of any denomination is welcome! Elaine and Howard are passionate about bringing some heritage back to the club: “There have been many captains over the years – of all religions,” Elaine explains. “We want to bring both Jewish and golfing traditions back to the club.”

The pair are more than qualified for the positions, with Elaine revisiting the role for a second time: “I was nominated as captain in 1990, and I’m thrilled to be back again. It’s Howard’s first time as captain at the club – he was previously captain of the Leeds Jewish Golfing Society.”

Both Elaine and Howard are enthusiastic to be stepping up and have already planned a

jam-packed calendar for the next few months, alongside the busy golfing schedule. We’ll be serving festive food alongside songs and candle lighting that’s free and everyone’s welcome!

“On 1st March, we’ll be welcoming Lord Mayor Councillor Dan Cohen for afternoon tea, 18th April will see a performance by a Neil Diamond tribute act, and on 14th June, jeweller to the royal family, Edward Green, will be the guest speaker at a brunch.”

IN TOUCH

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis recently visited the area.

Chief Rabbi Mirvis visited Harrogate Synagogue, marking his third visit to the shul. His visit was both unexpected and yet typical of the man, who asked if he could go along for tea and a chat with as many congregants as the shul could muster for this last-minute surprise.

Over 70 members enjoyed his wonderful, off-the-cuff address, where he was also at pains to let them know of his admiration for Harrogate Hebrew Congregation. This was followed by a Q&A session and plentiful refreshments.

The visit – which he requested personally and was meant to be fleeting in between his official engagements for the day – lasted for nearly two hours.

A wonderful day and a credit to the shul’s

Vice President, Roma Cohen, for so diligently making sure it all went off perfectly.

He also visited LJFS and Brodestky Primary School in October, speaking in both assemblies for the children. There were also meetings held with the governors of each of the schools as well as with the Jewish Studies and Ivrit department.

At Brodetsky, Year 6 gave a D'var Torah, Mrs Kupperman led the children in morning tefillah, the choir sang shalom aleichem, members of the school council asked questions on behalf of their classes, the Tzedakah Committee made a presentation and pledged to collect money for the Chief Rabbi's chosen charity, and members of the eco-committee showed him around The Zone and some of its activities.

Captains of the golf club each pick a charity to support during their tenure; Elaine will be supporting Yorkshire Cancer Research and Howard’s charity is Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“We’re really excited to get going,” Elaine says. “We want the club to be a vibrant space and can’t wait to host these events – and we won’t be charging a silly amount for tickets!”

Community First

We spoke with Laurence Saffer following the end of his tenure as LJRC President.

After over five years in total as president of Leeds Jewish Representative Council (LJRC) – longer than anyone since the 1960s –Laurence Saffer’s time in the role has come to an end. Laurence first became involved with the LJRC in 2014, becoming president in 2016. He was reinstated in the role in 2022, coming in with an aim to “rebuild our capacity to defend our community against those who may not share our values and represent us in a positive way to those who do.”

Speaking on that quote from his leaving statement, Laurence says: “It’s been a challenge. The reality is that all community relations are affected by events entirely out of our control. For example, what happened on October 7th has been a very challenging environment in which all Jewish communities have found themselves. But if organisations like the LJRC didn’t do the work they do, it would have been even more difficult.”

“The greatest pleasure I had in this role was hearing from people who moved to Leeds and found it a very warm and welcoming community,” Laurence reflects with fondness. “That’s probably the best thing that a community can have; people wanting to move and live here is a reflection not on any individual, but on the community as a whole.”

During his time as president, Laurence made the perhaps surprising choice of staying away from social media: “Social media is an echo chamber; people post for all sorts of reasons, a great many of whom aren’t members of the Jewish community or don't live in Leeds. If I'm representing the Leeds

Jewish community, it’s those people in the city that I need to hear from.

“If you look at the actual numbers of people who post, you only get a selection of people who shout the loudest – it doesn’t reflect on what everybody else is thinking. Social media is only a small part of what people want to say. Communities are about people who live here so I made sure that I went to different shuls and community events just to listen to as many people as possible. If I want to engage with somebody, I’ll meet them and talk to them properly.”

Although his presidency is over, Laurence’s communal work is not: “First things first, I’m taking a break! I’m still an active member of my shul – which is BHH – and I’ll still very much be around the community and will be representing it wherever I can. It all depends on what the community needs and where I think I can help best.”

One thing Laurence remains passionate about is getting everyone involved in communal work, no matter how small

they think their contribution may be: “I understand there are limitations; some people don’t have a lot of time to give. But everybody has the chance to contribute in some way, whether it's through schools, helping at Scouts, or helping with meals on wheels, there's something anybody and everybody can do.

“It's just as important for somebody to deliver meals to an elderly person and check in with them as it is for somebody to be a chairman of organisation. You can sit at home and make a difference through a phone call or charitable donation – you can do all sorts of things that use your skills! It really does make a difference,” Laurence emphasises. “When I was in my 30s and 40s and my kids were growing up, I was on one committee that met for once every few weeks, and I worked in the shul bookshop for two hours on alternate Sundays. I always found something to do!”

Offering advice to his successor, who will be announced in the coming months, Laurence says: “Just listen. LJRC was created and owned by the community in 1936 – which is still the case today – so as president, you must listen to what the people in this community have to say. You’re a representative, not the person who decides what goes on. We’re a great community that’s completely about people, no matter their religious beliefs or where they stand on the social spectrum; everyone is just as important as everybody else. It’s a very humbling role and I hope I’ve done no harm.”

FINDING LIGHT

Rabbi Eli Pink of Chabad Lubavitch reflects on the teachings of Chanukah.

At our recent young professionals Friday night dinner, I posed a simple question around the table: “What do you enjoy most about the winter?” The answers ranged from the serious to the very spirited. Some spoke about cosy evenings in, others about winter walks and big coats. A few laced their answers with humour (someone insisted their favourite thing about winter was when it ends). But as I listened, I realised my own answer was clear. My favourite part of winter is Chanukah.

Chanukah fits the season not just aesthetically, but spiritually. The image of small flames glowing against the long nights feels almost cinematic: light insisting on its presence even when darkness seems dominant. In truth, the Jewish calendar is intentional. Festivals fall where they fall for

reasons. Chanukah arrives precisely when daylight is shortest and our need for warmth, connection, and shared purpose is greatest.

Interestingly, the word ‘Chanukah’ itself carries layers of meaning. It can mean ‘dedication’ but also ‘education’. At first glance, neither seems directly linked to doughnuts, dreidels, or miracle oil. Yet behind the familiar symbols lies a deeper message.

The Maccabean struggle was not merely a military conflict; it was a cultural crossroads. The Hellenistic world was presented as beautiful, refined, and sophisticated. The struggle of the Maccabees against Hellenisation went to the core of what Judaism is about: influencing without assimilating. Being a light unto the nations not just through our actions, but also through the depth of Jewish teachings.

That remains our task today. To bring light, not by shouting slogans, but by educating. To stand confidently as part of the wider world, yet rooted in something ancient, meaningful, and enduring.

This winter may our candles remind us that even the smallest light can transform a room. And that identity, when nurtured and celebrated, continues to illuminate far beyond our houses.

Chabad Lubavitch will have activities for the whole community during Chanukah and if you or someone you know would appreciate a house visit to bring some Chanukah cheer, please get in touch.
