Rolling Back the Years
Former Manchester Maccabi footballers Graeme Warner and Sheldon Lee rolled back the years with a cameo role in an All Star Charity Football Match at The Manchester Grammar School (MGS)..
The match, organised by Graeme, was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of ex member of staff Stuart Dale.
Internationals including former Chelsea player Robert Huth and Everton player Phil Jagielka were part of an All Star parents team who beat the staff 6-2.
Both Graeme and Sheldon’s sons are former pupils at MGS.
Graeme commented: “We had a huge crowd to make it a brilliant day for a very worthy cause.”
Summer Fete for Volunteers’ Week
On an almost rain free summer evening on 5th June, 160 dedicated Fed volunteers with their invited ‘plus ones’ gathered at Heathlands Village for a Summer Fete to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of National Volunteers Week.
The event began with welcome speeches from Volunteer Services Manager, Dalia Kaufman, and Chief Executive, Mark Cunningham, who used the opportunity to focus on the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.
The Fed’s Next Gen Project Coordinator, Tammy Friedlander also addressed the crowd explaining her role in running 'Alpha Feds' – a central component of the charity’s futureproofing strategy, designed to introduce students in school Years 9 and 10 to the work of The Fed and volunteering opportunities.
During the fete, a group of ‘Alpha Fedders’ staffed mini market stalls and hosted a lively beat-the-goalie competition, raising over £250.
As the wine flowed, volunteers of all ages mingled and danced to timeless favourites, the musical entertainment very kindly provided by a talented trio of friends – Ben Sallon, JeanPhillipe Glaskie and Chazan Michael Isdale.
Guests captured special moments together in an ‘Alpha Feds’ selfie frame and with a nod to Yom Yerushalayim, enjoyed a delicious Israeli-style light supper. Alex Chaytow of Creative Balloon Displays donated balloon arrangements.

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
A FOND FAREWELL
Joyce Khan will be leaving The Fed after 26 years of dutiful service. She shares her memories of her time with the organisation.
The year that Joyce Khan first joined the Fed, Wannabe by the Spice Girls was blasting on the radio, Braveheart won Best Picture at the Oscars, and the world was astounded by the birth of the first ever clone, Dolly the Sheep. With nearly 30 years of service at the organisation under her belt, Joyce didn’t start in the marketing role which she has had for 17 years, but in social care instead: “I joined in October 1996,” she told us. “Originally my job was Carers’ Support Worker. I was essentially like an unqualified social worker. I was supporting people in the Salford community who were looking after a family member and struggling. I did that until June 2006, and then I just hit a wall because I was like a sponge for other people’s sorrow. I have such admiration for my social work colleagues who have been in the job a lot longer than I stayed there.”
Though Joyce decided to move on from the social care aspect of the job, the Fed didn’t want to lose her entirely: “I was being managed by Mark Cunningham at the time, who’s now our Chief Executive, and he was very supportive. I took a punt on a 10 hour a week job in Fundraising and Marketing. That job just grew, and I became the Marketing Officer, and then we split the team, and I became Marketing and Communications Manager.”
Throughout her long career she’s seen the organisation go through a lot of changes along the way to becoming the powerhouse it is today: “When I started out, about 30 odd people worked at the Fed, and we were working from office in Holland Road in Crumpsall. Just as I joined, we did a merger with The Benevolent, and became what I term ‘the old Fed’. It was still a very small organisation, but already a professional one with a social work team.
But if you look at the Fed now, it’s a beacon organisation. In the run up to the election we got singled out for political visits. We were visited by Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron recently. They often say: ‘We can’t go to the North West and not visit the Fed.’”
Stepping down after so long is bittersweet for Joyce, but it’s not the last that the Fed has seen of her: “I’ve got very mixed feelings. I work with just gorgeous people. And I love seeing them. But I know for myself that it’s the right time to go. And I also know that I intend to be here a lot, visiting the third floor offices, and helping out on a volunteer basis.”
Over the years, Joyce has helped a great deal of people, both directly and indirectly, and it’s this which stands out for her: “I was very proud of the work that I did when I was working in the community. Of the comfort that I gave people and that I helped people who were living under a lot of strain. We’ve also done some amazing fundraisers over the years in the days when we used to have guest speakers. Some people were really unpleasant when they weren’t putting on their public front, and then some people, such as Joanna Lumley, were an absolute delight. We also used to make videos of the dinner and to see the audience be affected by something that you’ve been involved in and helped to craft is incredible.”
Keep It Cool MOTORING
Welcome all to JLife’s summer motoring edition! With temperatures on the rise yearly and longer summers, many of us will take advantage to get away on holiday in the car. To make the journey more enjoyable here are a few tips for safe summer driving.
• A re-gas and re-charge of your air conditioning will keep the temperature inside lovely and chilled; many garages offer this or check online for mobile air-con companies who will come to your home. In addition to this, the pollen filter replacement helps to keep allergies low and helps the air-con to circulate.
• Tyres should be checked with your local garage to ensure safe and correct tyre pressure, check the spare tyre is in good condition and tools include the locking wheel nut. This hugely important part is often overlooked in the event of a puncture.
• You should also make sure to service your vehicles, so faults can be highlighted prior to your journey and rectified. Prices vary on this so discuss with your garage about your requirements.
• Ensure you have Roadside Recovery with the AA, RAC, or Green Flag. It’s easy to register for a membership online, and it’s worth its weight in gold should an issue arise.
VEHICLE SERVICING MADE SIMPLE
• Take rest breaks in between your journey to ensure safe driving and ensure your sat nav is updated to alert to traffic jams and speed cameras to avoid any issues on your journey.
Enjoy the summer and your holiday journeys, from the PMB team, Rachel, Paul, and Tom!

STAR STUDDED EVENING
Dame Maureen Lipman and Natasha Hausdorff spoke on Israel at a sell-out event organised by the Fed and the JRC.
A sellout crowd of 300 filled the Hilton Suite, Manchester to hear two of the Jewish community’s most formidable advocates for the State of Israel. One of the UK’s most feted actresses, Dame Maureen Lipman and Natasha Hausdorff – barrister and legal director of UK Lawyers for Israel were in conversation with Raphi Bloom, The Fed’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing and Co-Chair of North West Friends of Israel .
The event was jointly arranged by The Fed and the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester & Region (JRC) and explored a variety of topics of great concern to the Jewish community – its future in the UK; how the celebrity world has reacted to the IsraelHamas conflict; how the IDF has responded within the laws of war to the October 7th attack; the next steps for the ICC and ICJ and how, as a community, we can reclaim the true meaning of Zionism from those who distort it.
Guests were welcomed by Mark Adlestone OBE, the chair of the JRC and Honorary Patron of The Fed. Mark reflected on the JRC’s vital work since October 7th, in leading the way in dialogue at the highest levels of government regarding events that have taken place in Greater Manchester. This has seen the JRC’s comments carried on the front pages of national print media alongside regular contributions on local, national and

international news channels to ensure the community’s voice is heard loud and clear.
Mark also reflected on the Talmudic concept of “Aniye Ircha Kodmim” – “the poor of your city come first”, exhorting guests not to forsake people who are vulnerable and in need and living in Manchester. He emphasised the crucial role played by The Fed – the largest provider of social care support for Jewish people in Manchester – in meeting their needs.
Proceeds from the evening were split equally between The Fed and the JRC to fund their respective work.
Dame Maureen and Natasha received a standing ovation following their conversation with Raphi. MAG Financial sponsored the event, Quooker supplied a raffle prize and photography at the event was by Ruthless Images.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
The joint UJIA and JRC Leadership Programme has kicked off, teaching practical leadership skills to candidates across the community.
Recently, our community saw the launch of the UJIA and JRC Leadership Programme. Historically, UJIA have run the programme for over ten years resulting in numerous graduates taking positions of responsibility in communal organisations.
Many people had a hand in setting up the programme, including Yael Mohaliver Brif, Carmel Berke, and Ben Shapiro from UJIA. Huge credit is also given Deborah Britstone from the JRC and especially Anat Caspi Kaivanto who has worked tirelessly to design the sessions and recruit for the course.
The programme includes amazing candidates from across our diverse
community. Participants will have the dual benefit of learning practical leadership skills while being informed of the JRC’s communal infrastructure. This will ensure they are best placed to join an organisation of their choosing at board level upon graduation.
The launch event allowed for the participants to hear from and speak with communal leaders including Mark Adlestone (JRC), Amanda Bomsztyk (Community Security Trust (CST), Bernie Yaffe (THE FED) and Nici Wertheim nee Matlow (UJIA) about their personal journeys and thoughts on what makes an effective leader.

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY NORTHERN LIGHTS
The Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester recently took a trip to Norway where they visited the country’s Jewish Museum.
The Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester exists to promote friendship between the Muslim and Jewish Communities of Greater Manchester.
For over 15 years, some Forum members have gone on holiday together each year (except when prevented by the pandemic), at their own expense, to places of Muslim and Jewish interest. This year five of them went to Oslo, capital of Norway, the first time any of them had visited Oslo.
Before the visit, the travellers knew very little of Norway’s history, and how it was ruled for about 300 years by Denmark and then after the Napoleonic wars by Sweden for about a century before peacefully attaining independence.
Norway’s most famous artists are probably the playwright Ibsen, whose plays are performed more than anyone’s after Shakespeare, and the painter Edvard Munch.
There was an impressive modern museum building dedicated to Munch’s works quite close to the visitors’ hotel.
Forum Co-Chair Cllr Heather Fletcher, who is Jewish, said: “We had a very enjoyable time in the modern city of Oslo, and we learnt a lot on our visit too. We learnt about Norwegian culture and its people when we visited the Norwegian Folk Museum. We also visited major attractions such as the Hollmenkollen ski jump and the Vigeland sculpture park. It was also interesting to learn that there are now approximately 85,000 Muslims in Oslo but
sadly the Jewish community now numbers just 1,000 residents.”
Forum Co-Chair Mohammed Amin said: “The visit to the Jewish Museum was particularly moving. The displays focused on telling the stories of individuals and specific families who perished in the Holocaust, as well as some who survived. This is a vital reminder that the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust were not just a number, they were individuals with hopes and aspirations, with more than a million children among the dead.”
PUT IN WRITING
Regular JLife contributor Elaine Bermitz has turned her hand to poetry as she fights against cancer, here are two recent pieces we’d like to share, and we wish her well…
Surprisingly today a tight band of tension
Has eased in my head
I don’t feel sick.
The pit of my stomach is not thick
With acid apprehension.
I don’t jump at the sound of the phone. All these clichés so often shared with fellow carers I know to be true.
Because with their absence comes a void
Which, not now, but in a distance
Will refill with lighter, less exacting thoughts.
Suddenly I am lighter, less fraught,
More open to suggestion.
Even, dare I say?
Eager at the thought of the coming day.
Going Home
This is hard all round.
We are sure that it’s right for us and for you
That you shouldn’t continue Reducing yourself. Accepting less.
That you will have more of the world With more care.
Above all you must understand That you don’t understand The danger today’s world shares.
For me, it is another fight
In the constant battle during which Guilt, at some half-forgotten disaffection Blisters my mind. And blights the present with doubt.
Others, better able to see the light Tell me the benefits.
Outweigh the small slights And indignities to which you So vehemently object.
Perhaps for you the hardest of all Is it’s very convenience.
The independence you so jealously guard Has made your life so hard You cannot now live in the moment.

Oliver Cowan talks us through the ins and outs of his son Jack’s Bar Mitzvah as he took to the stage.
When Jack Cowan was called up at Etz Chaim Synagogue in Leeds on 6th April it was the culmination of over a year’s worth of preparation. With a piece to learn, family to corral, and a big bash to celebrate, organising a Bar or Bat Mitzvah weekend is a lot of work! We spoke to Jack’s dad Oliver about what the experience was like for him: “My main job was that I taught Jack his piece for the synagogue, while Jack’s mum organised the party. It worked really nicely. I dealt with the Saturday and she dealt with the Sunday!”
Over the weekend, there are a lot of different aspects which need to come together for the event to go off without a hitch, as Southport FC fan and online bridge club owner Oliver explained: “If you were planning a normal party, once you find the venue, the party planner at the venue will help out with organising and catering. With a Bar Mitzvah, you’ve got to find your own kosher caterer, find a venue which will allow them to cater, and then because you’re not using a hotel usually, you have to sort the bar out and the entertainment.”
For Jack’s celebrations, the usual disco wasn’t an option, so the entertainment took on a fairground theme instead: “Jack has autism and ADHD. He doesn’t like loud noise and loud music, so that ruled out the idea of a disco. But he loves fairgrounds and carnivals, so Nikki, my ex-wife, did a fantastic job with that. She found a company to basically provide the stalls, so there was a tin can alley, a hook-a-duck etc.. And the food was tied in as well! Popcorn, candy floss and so on.”
It’s the ceremonial part of the weekend which effectively is the Bar Mitzvah, when a boy reaches the age of 13 and technically becomes a man in Jewish law – the party is a custom which has grown and is now almost as important. For the family both were a product of many months work: “The planning of the weekend itself was hard because there were a lot of uncertainties. I’d been teaching Jack for around 18 months, and I think the actual party side of it, Nikki was working on for about eight or nine months.”
As Jack took on the ceremonial reciting of part of the Torah, known as the week’s “Sedre” Oliver took great pleasure of being on the “bimah”, or platform with him: “The teaching was really rewarding and it meant that I could be with him in the synagogue when he was called up, and I knew what he was doing. Equally, he was comfy and confident with me being there which was nice. One of his issues – because of his ADHD – is that most boys, when they have a Bar Mitzvah lesson, will go for 45 minutes or an hour. With Jack we tended to do seven to 10 minutes then he was off and he’d come back a bit later and do another few minutes. So, it was hard work, but on the day, it was extremely rewarding to watch him do what he did. It was nice to share that. Overall, this was the highlight for me of an amazing weekend, I’m sure Jack’s was to open all his presents!"

Rabbi Ozer and Leah Moszkowski share their thoughts on the Bar and Bat Mitzvah, coming of age.
A tender young girl or boy, barely scraping adolescence, suddenly thrust into an adult world, with the full weight of decision resting squarely on their narrow shoulders. This sounds archaic, barbaric even. Horridly reminiscent of deadly dark mines or scrabbling under toothed machines at cotton mills.
Is that why we feel compelled to commandeer expansive halls, energetic DJs, enough disco lights to bring the roof down, and all the cake our town can bake, to drown out the terrible fate of our child’s new reality?
Or is it actually the most forward, intuitive, eternally understanding recognition of what our dear preteens need more than anything else, as they pass the start line on the marathon called life? For it is not actually a burden we are strapping to their young shoulders, but a secret jetpack for success.
Because it is G-D telling your child, I believe in you. I trust you. I know you can listen to that quiet voice at the back of your mind saying, don’t laugh when you see someone fall, don’t talk about your friend behind their back, don’t share that video she begged you not to show anyone. I believe in you! You are no longer a small child who needs to be told not to eat like that, sit like that, talk like that. You are an adult now. You have the biggest brightest future! I believe in you. I trust you. I know you have a strong inner moral compass that you can learn to rely on to make decisions.
After all, the biggest gift you can give your child is teaching them the power of self-control. We do not have to be slaves to our impulses. We do not have to say the nasty thing, or eat the oily thing, or keep scrolling on the fun time-wasting thing, or buy the sparkly thing.
A child with self-control is an empowered child. A child who can accept a ‘no’ is an empowered child. How do we achieve this? By believing in our children. By becoming their loudest cheerleaders. By giving them responsibilities (age appropriate of course). By treating them like fledgling adults. Babied kids will act like babies, ‘adulted’ kids will act like adults. It’s the language we use around them, the responsibilities we give them. We are handcrafting their self-esteem, day by day, stitch by stitch.
Trust your children. They want to learn, they want to become solid, stable, mindful, deeply contented little beings. Let’s help them get there.
Yes, the power of decision is a big responsibility, but it’s the biggest gift we can give our kids. This therefore follows why it is the time we enrol our precious little thinkers into B’nei Mitzvah learning groups. They need knowledge of their heritage in order to make good Jewish decisions. The eternal wisdom rings so true. For morality, for interpersonal relationships, for truth, for direction.
But the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong endeavour. Perhaps post Bat and Bar Mitzvah groups are where it’s really at?
The world nowadays asks so much of our kids. Cyber bullying- a monster we couldn’t concoct in our darkest nightmares, antisemitism in their supposed safe spaces, exposure to visceral global horror. We as parents and communities need to run to keep up so that we can sprint alongside our precious children and offer them emotional and spiritual support, nourishment, guidance, and validation as they battle the marathon that is life as a modern teen.

Set the stage for magic
The venue sets the tone for your entire celebration. Opt for a location that resonates with the significance of the event and adds a special touch. Whether it’s an elegant ballroom, a rustic barn, a picturesque outdoor garden, a football stadium or a chic city centre venue, choosing a unique venue creates an ambiance that leaves a lasting impression. A distinct venue not only provides a beautiful backdrop for photos but also enhances the overall experience for your guests, making the simcha feel truly special.
Keep the energy high
Entertainment is the heartbeat of any celebration. Ensure your simcha is lively and engaging by booking outstanding entertainers. Live bands, DJs, performers and dancers can keep the energy high, and the guests entertained. Consider interactive elements like games and activities or even a surprise performance that reflects personality and interests. The right entertainment can turn a good party into an extraordinary one, creating memories that guests will talk about for years.
Delight the senses
Food is a central element of any celebration, and it should be as pleasing to the eyes as it is to the palate. Opt for dishes that are beautifully presented and flavourful. Consider hiring a caterer known for their artistic presentation
and innovative culinary skills. Interactive food stations, elegant dessert tables, and creative cocktails can elevate the dining experience. When the food and drinks look as good as it tastes, it becomes a conversation piece and a highlight.
Transform your space
Décor sets the mood and enhances the theme of your simcha. Think beyond traditional decorations and aim for something that truly transforms the space. Elegant table arrangements, dramatic lighting, and customised centrepieces can create a breathtaking environment. Show-stopping décor doesn’t just decorate the venue; it immerses your guests in an enchanting experience, and it goes without saying you'll get the most sensational photos as a memory.
Details matter
The little details can make a big difference in creating a magical atmosphere. Think of creative touches that reflect the guest of honour’s personality and make the event feel personalised. This could include custom invitations, unique party favours, customised cushions, personalised napkins and signage or interactive elements like a memory wall where guests can leave heartfelt messages. Thoughtful details show your guests that you’ve put extra care into making the event special, enhancing their overall experience.
Surprise and delight
Surprises can come in many forms, such as a surprise guest performance, an unexpected activity, or a dramatic reveal during the event. These moments keep your guests engaged and excited. The key is to think outside the box and incorporate elements that will wow your guests and make the event uniquely memorable and take it from ordinary to extraordinary.
Expertise makes the difference
Hiring an experienced event planner can be a game-changer, bringing expertise, creativity, and a wealth of resources to the table. They can help you navigate the complexities of planning a large event, ensuring that every detail is perfect. From supplier sourcing and coordination to timeline management, a planner can handle the logistics, allowing you to focus on enjoying the celebration. Their experience can also bring fresh ideas and unique touches that you might not have considered, and their relationships with suppliers can often mean you pay less!

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY BADGE OF HONOUR
Prominent member of the community, Edwina Rosenberg, has been awarded an MBE as part of the King’s Birthday Honours list.
Edwina Rosenberg has spent more than 60 years of her life volunteering at various organisations across Manchester, starting from when she was 16 years old. Many Prestwich residents will remember her for her colourful outfit, which she dressed put in both to raise money and to visit those who needed cheering up. A common get-up was a particularly beloved fictional nanny, which earned Edwina the title of “Mary Poppins”, one which she is still greeted with to this day.
Receiving the letter informing her that she would be receiving the MBE back in May was a pleasant surprise: “My husband, who has vascular dementia and short term memory loss, handed me a letter which said Cabinet Office on it. I said: ‘Don’t worry darling, I wrote to the Prime Minister last October.’ I thought this was finally a reply. When I opened it, it was nothing to do with the letter and I was being awarded an MBE. I didn’t know anything about it and I was in tears. I was just stunned!”
With over 60 years of volunteering behind
her in schools, nursing homes, and prisons, Edwina still regularly bumps into people she’s helped over the years: “About six years ago, I went into Curry’s as they were advertising a sale. I spoke to a sales assistant and he said: ‘Mary Poppins, you can have what you like!’ He was 31-years-old then, but he told me that when he was nine-yearsold I came to Booth Hall Children’s Hospital and gave him a present, and it made his day. So he gave me free delivery and free removal of the old appliance. I thought that was wonderful!”
When discussing the honours, Edwina took great pains to highlight that she wouldn’t have been able to make such a difference to the people she’s helped over the years without the organisations she volunteered at: “I am grateful to all those organisations, the schools, the hospitals, the nursing homes, that welcomed me. Because honestly, would I have gotten this
award without then welcoming me? I’m grateful that they have made my life very meaningful.”
It was last February that I was diagnosed with high risk Neuroblastoma. The diagnosis was a real shock as I had no symptoms apart from a tummy ache.
I knew about Chai because they’d helped us when my grandpa was unwell, so it felt really good to know that they would be able to help us all again.
For Dad it was counselling, for Mum it was therapeutic massage and for me and my siblings, a combination of talking, music, art and play therapy.
Thank you Chai.
Ari, 13
Although she is now housebound while taking care of her husband and due to her own disability, Edwin still dedicates a lot of her time towards others, often hosting Yom Tov meals and checking up on people over the phone: “I’ve still got a list. I spend an hour and a half on the phone to people who are on their own, who need someone to keep them amused. And my house has always been everybody’s house. If I can help someone else, that’s what makes me happy.”

Pick Your Spot
Summer is here! Get out and about with our selection of picnic spots around Ramsbottom.
With the North West being known for its less than temperate weather, when it isn’t grey and miserable it’s important to make the most of it. On your day out in Rammy, why not head off for a picnic in one of the many idyllic parks and green spaces in the surrounding area?
Edenfield Waterfall
This hidden gem is concealed among the trees but is more than worth seeking out. Whether you want to take a wild swim or have a break in a secluded area, just a 10-minute drive out of Ramsbottom will lead you to this beautiful pocket of nature. There are grassy banks surrounding the waterfall, making it a perfect location for you and your picnic blanket.
Jumbles Country Park
Opened in 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II, this park has the royal stamp of approval. Perfect for families and those with pushchairs, the park offers a flat and easy terrain which surrounds the Jumbles reservoir. There are also other trails with a few short, more challenging climbs if you want to work up a bit more of an appetite before sitting down to enjoy your picnic on the park grounds.
Healey Dell Nature Reserve
A disused railway line is now a scenic nature trail with magnificent views from a 100 ft. high viaduct which makes for stunning views all year round, particularly in the summertime. The river Spodden has carved its way through the reserve’s woodlands over thousands of years, creating delightful scenery and spectacular waterfalls. As well as pleasant surroundings, Healey Dell is great for the kids as there’s a fairy grotto where you can meet the Healey Dell Fairy, making your picnic day a little bit more magical!
Fletcher Moss Gardens
A bit further afield but worth the drive, Fletcher Moss Gardens is a sprawling green space located in Didsbury stretching from the River Mersey to Stenner Woods. The gardens were gifted to Manchester council in the early 1900s by Aldermen Fletcher Moss and still retain many of their original features. The RSPB was founded here, making it a great location for any bird enthusiasts. Spread your blanket out and enjoy your picnic in the Manchester sunshine surrounded by picturesque scenery and hundreds of wildlife species.

Morocco is an increasingly popular winter sun destination with it’s balmy climate, cultural hotspots, and stunning landscape.
We may be in the middle of summer, but with the autumn and winter chill soon to set in, many of us will be thinking wistfully of jetting off to sunnier locales. Planning a winter getaway to look forward to is a sure-fire way to beat the gloom as the weather turns. While many flock to typical tropical paradises, there’s a gem in North Africa that offers a unique blend of culture, adventure, and sunshine: Morocco. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco beckons visitors with its vibrant cities, rugged mountains, and vast deserts.
While much of Europe and North America shiver in subzero temperatures, Morocco enjoys a mild and sunny winter climate. With average temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F) in popular destinations like Marrakech and Fes, visitors can bask in the warmth without breaking a sweat. This pleasant weather creates the perfect conditions for exploring Morocco’s diverse landscapes and outdoor activities.
It’s a country that boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes, from the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains to the golden sands of the Sahara Desert. In winter, these landscapes take on a special charm, with crisp mountain air invigorating hikers and skiers, while the desert offers serene tranquillity under the gentle winter sun. Whether you’re trekking through lush valleys or camel riding across vast dunes, its diverse terrain promises unforgettable experiences.
Moroccan cuisine is a feast for the senses, bursting with exotic flavours and aromatic
spices. Winter is the perfect time to indulge in hearty tagines, fragrant couscous, and freshly baked bread enjoyed alongside mint tea. Street food vendors come alive during this season, offering sizzling kebabs, flaky pastries, and sweet treats like msemen and chebakia. Embark on a culinary journey through Morocco’s diverse gastronomic landscape, where each meal is a celebration of tradition and hospitality.
For thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, a playground of adventure activities year-round awaits. Winter is an especially inviting time to explore the country’s natural wonders, whether you’re hiking through the Todra Gorge, surfing along the Atlantic coast, or skiing in the Atlas Mountains. Adventurous souls can also embark on desert safaris, quad biking excursions, or hot air balloon rides for a bird’s-eye view of some breathtaking landscapes.
Compared to peak tourist season in the summer, winter offers more affordable travel options with accommodation prices tending to drop, and you’ll often find deals on flights and tours to stretch your travel budget further. With less of a crowd you can enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience without breaking the bank. Check out some of the highlights Morocco has to offer:

One of the most proactive steps you can take for your health is to get screened for serious conditions before they occur. Preventive health screening allows for early detection of diseases and chronic conditions before symptoms manifest, playing a critical role in your medical care as you age. Early detection is crucial because it often means conditions can be treated more effectively, leading to improved health outcomes and a better quality of life.
Health screens are particularly effective at reducing cancer deaths and preventing conditions like osteoporosis, diabetes, and hypertension. Identifying these

issues early enables individuals to take preventive measures that might otherwise be overlooked until the condition has advanced. This proactive approach can lead to less intensive treatments, fewer complications, and better overall health.
Moreover, health screenings can encourage positive lifestyle changes. Discovering that you are at risk for certain diseases allows healthcare providers at Hilton House Medical to offer personalised advice. This might include adopting a healthier diet, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco. These changes can significantly reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions and improve your overall health.
The benefits of routine health screens extend beyond physical health. They also enhance mental well-being. Insights into your physical health allow you to address
potential issues proactively, reducing anxiety or stress related to undiagnosed health problems. Knowing you are actively managing your health can provide peace of mind and a sense of control over your wellbeing.
In summary, health screenings are an invaluable tool in preventive healthcare. They not only detect potential health issues early but also encourage healthier lifestyle choices, enhancing both physical and mental wellbeing. By taking advantage of routine health screens, you can take charge of your health and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Regenerative agriculture offers a way for you to cut down the carbon footprint of your meals, without having to cut out meat.
For years, one of the most effective ways to minimise the environmental impact of your diet has been by going vegan, a challenge that not everyone finds easy to undertake. However, a new movement is emerging that doesn’t require giving up meat entirely. This movement is centred around regenerative agriculture, an approach that focuses on improving soil health, boosting biodiversity, and enhancing the water cycle. Unlike traditional farming methods, which often deplete natural resources, regenerative agriculture aims to restore and enhance them.
Regenerative agriculture is not just a farming technique; it is a holistic system that views the farm as an interconnected ecosystem. By prioritising soil health, farmers can enhance the natural fertility of the land, which leads to more resilient crops. Practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and the integration of livestock all contribute to creating a balanced and sustainable farming system. These methods help to sequester carbon in the soil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote a rich biodiversity of plant and animal life.
Consumers today are increasingly interested in the origins of their food and the methods used to produce it. They want to support farming practices that are not only environmentally friendly but also socially responsible.
Regenerative agriculture meets these criteria by fostering healthier ecosystems and promoting fair labour practices. For caterers and food service providers, using regeneratively grown products
means offering food that is not just delicious but also contributes positively to the environment.
The economic benefits are also there for farmers. Healthier soil leads to stronger and more resilient crops, which can potentially result in higher yields. This can reduce the reliance on expensive fertilizers and pesticides, lowering overall production costs. Over time, these savings can translate into increased profits for farmers.
what qualifies as regenerative agriculture. This means that even if a product bears the term "regenerative" on its label, it is worth doing some research to verify the claims.
The best way to ensure that you are purchasing truly regeneratively farmed produce is to buy directly from the farms themselves. This allows you to investigate their farming practices and verify that they are genuinely committed to
Additionally, healthier and more productive soil can ensure a steady supply of high-quality ingredients, aligning with the growing demand for sustainably produced food.
So, how can you bring regeneratively grown products to your table? One way is to look for specific labels and certifications that indicate adherence to regenerative farming practices. Some of these include the Land to Market Verified Regenerative label, Regenerative Organic Certification, and the Certified Regenerative by AGW label. However, it is important to note that there is currently no universal standard for
regenerative methods. Many small and mediumsized farms are adopting these practices and are more than willing to share their methods and principles with consumers.
By focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable farming practices, regenerative agriculture can restore natural resources rather than deplete them. Consumers and caterers can support this movement by seeking out and purchasing regeneratively grown products, thus contributing to a healthier planet while enjoying delicious, high-quality food.

For World Ice Cream Day, it’s the perfect time to delve into the fascinating history of one of the world’s favourite desserts.
Whether you enjoy it in a cone, a cup, or even sandwiched between two cookies, ice cream is a timeless delight that brings smiles to faces of all ages – it even has its own day of celebration with World Ice Cream Day taking place on 21st July!
With countless flavours to choose from, from the classic chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, to more exotic options such as coconut and mango and rose and pistachio, there’s something for everyone. But did you know that ice cream has a history as rich as its flavour and it spans the four corners of the globe, with our frozen friend known as gelato in Italy, kulfi in India, and mochi in Japan?
Ancient origins
The first known ice cream-like treat originated during China’s Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Emperors back then enjoyed frozen milk mixed with flour, camphor, and sometimes buffalo or goat’s milk. They froze these creamy concoctions in metal tubes, storing them in ice pools for a cool, refreshing treat.
As time went on, icy desserts evolved. During the Medieval era, Arabs enjoyed a precursor to ice cream called sherbet (sharbat in Arabic), a fruity delight flavoured with quince, pomegranate, or cherry. As ‘ice cream’ made its way to Europe, Italian chefs in the 16th century experimented with ingredients such as cream, sugar and fruit, with the resulting creations quickly becoming popular in royal courts and among the wealthy. Italian innovations paved the way for gelato, which soon spread across Europe, inspiring new flavours and creations.
Welcome Stateside
In the 18th century, ice cream crossed the Atlantic to America, where it became a household staple. The first American ice cream shop opened in New York City in 1744, offering classic flavours like strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. From there, ice cream parlours popped up across the country, each with its own unique flavours and creations.
Variety and delight
Ice cream’s appeal lies in its simplicity and versatility. Made from milk, cream, sugar, and sometimes egg yolks, it’s ability to take on a wide range of flavours and mix-ins has led to many variations, each satisfying different tastes and
showcasing the endless possibilities of these basic ingredients. With classics like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry still topping the popularity polls, what new flavours can we expect this year? According to bidfood.co.uk, four exciting flavours are set to hit the shelves in 2024 and they sound delicious!
Cherry Cola Sorbet: A nostalgic nod to your favourite childhood sour sweets, this sorbet is a beautiful deep raspberry colour and tastes just like the sweet you remember.
Marshmallow Mudslide Ice Cream: A delicious chocolate ice cream with fluffy white and pink marshmallows and an Oreo crumb swirl.
Lemon Meringue Ice Cream: Perfect for summer, with ripples of lemon curd and chunks of crunchy meringue.
Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream: A classic dessert turned into ice cream form, with a cheesecake flavour, strawberry ripple, and shortbread biscuit crumbs.
Ice Dreams
Ice cream lovers in North Manchester have something to look forward to this summer. Glida, the already popular ice cream and dessert gelato on Bury New Road which opened last year, is now offering private events and parties too. With a focus on authentic quality Italian ice cream and delicious flavours, Glida is changing the face of kosher ice cream!
IN THE HOOD
Two friends have launched a project selling merchandise to raise funds for projects in Israel post-October 7th.
To support the UJIA committee, friends Natalie Silverman and Georgie Borson self-funded a venture that involved creating hoodies and t-shirts with the phrase: "We Will Dance Again," using Natalie’s design skills and Georgie's business acumen. The words were inspired by the tattoo Mia Schem had to mark her release from 55 days in the captivity of Hamas, following her kidnapping at the Nova Music Festival. These words sum up the reliance and the hope of the Jewish People and of Israel.
When they attended an event at Manchester Maccabi on Yom Ha’atzmaut with the merchandise, it sold out immediately. This prompted them to swiftly establish an online store and an Instagram page, where we began accepting pre-orders.
In less than a month, the venture has received over 200 orders and raised well over £2,500 for UJIA. The project continues to expand, and Natalie and Georgie have already shipped hoodies to various locations in the UK and the USA. Notably, the initiative has garnered attention from celebrities like Rachel Riley and Tracy-Ann Oberman, who have placed orders.
Additionally, influential individuals such as KoshaDillz, who has 151,000 followers on Instagram, and Thejewishfitnesscoach, who
has 98,000 followers, have expressed interest in the merchandise. Natalie and Georgie have received numerous photos from people wearing the hoodies at various events, including the recent film festival in London, counter protests, hostage vigils, and more. These hoodies provide a non-political platform for individuals who may be hesitant to display symbols of Judaism due to concerns about antisemitism. Instead, they convey a strong and resilient message while fostering unity within communities.
Other photos have included individuals wearing them while traveling to Israel, and a woman standing outside the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. This particular image evoked strong emotions. Natalie and Georgie also received news of a family who returned to Austria to participate in a Holocaust memorial in the hoodies.
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
The brand is a non-profit, non-political endeavour aimed at uniting global communities to promote healing, joy, hope, positivity, and enlightenment, and is committed to expanding its reach in order to raise more funds.
Orders can be placed at the instagram page @wewilldanceagainofficial
LET’S GET QUIZZICAL
The Neurokinetic
Club,
an exercise club for those with neurological conditions, pulls no punches when it comes to quizzing.
A Prestwich-based exercise and support club aimed at helping people with neurological conditions is holding a charity quiz night to boost its coffers and raise awareness of the benefits it brings to many in the community.
But quiz master Mark Samberg, who is a member of the club, which features kicking
balls and boxing among its activities, will be pulling no punches when it comes to posing tough questions on the night.
The Neurokinetic Club runs specialist exercise classes four times a week at Maccabi Community Centre, with separate sessions for men and women, helping those suffering from Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Strokes, Dementia, and other neurological conditions to gain greater strength, fitness, and confidence.
And now the charity is hoping the quiz at Stenecourt Synagogue will shed more light on their good work and provide a fun night out for all.
Commenting on the success of the club since its inception last year, men’s trainer Andrew Saipe explained: “We are giving our members greater confidence, improving their quality of life and in the best cases, slowing down the progression of a condition.
“Our plan is to reach more individuals and impact the lives of 100-plus members directly through our group sessions, collaborating with the medical community and other partners and sponsors who are aligned with our goals.
“Of course, we can’t underestimate the value of the social aspect for our members and their partners and carers too,” he added. “We have individuals from all areas in the community and beyond and sharing and chatting about similar experiences gives them comfort.”
The NK Club quiz is on 17th July. To find out more about this, or the organisation, email info@neurokinetic.club or call Andrea
We chat with father and son Jonathan and Daniel Levy, who tell us all about a new play centered around their family’s experiences in the Second World War.
A Family Tale
Harold’s War is the remarkable true story of a boy who joined this brothers and friends in the fight against the Nazis in the Second World War. This new play, coming to East Riding Theatre in Beverley on 5th September, is based on a documentary made by Harold’s grandson Daniel, with the help of his father Jonathan, as a school project. Through the film discovered relatives involved at every major milestone, from fleeing persecution to the outbreak of hostilities; the retreat from Dunkirk, the defence of Britain and the D-Day landings; major battles, seizing scientists, and even the development of the atom bomb.
The film forms not only the inspiration for the play, but also part of its narrative as the scenes will be interspersed with clips of the film, as Jonathan told us: “Rather than a full dramatisation, what we’ll be doing is playing some clips of the initial interviews on screen. I’ll be narrating, and then we have a group of people who’ll be live reading things like letters and doing short audio dramatisations, and we’ll create the whole thing as like a recording of a radio show or podcast in front of a live audience.”
The story is very emotional and personal to Jonathan and Daniel’s family, but they have also managed to include some moments of levity in
the play, as Jonathan says: “Some of the letters we have are quite powerful, so we’ve tried to create some light and shade by including some of the humorous things as well. We’ve included a story of the mother trying to go and get her son back from the barracks and leaving him an apple pie and a bit of chicken.”
When Daniel originally put together the film the play is based on, it was in 1996 for a school project entitled My Family at War, as he explains: “I was 11 years old, in the last year of primary school. It was the big school project that we had to do. The idea was to go out and get some accounts from your family members who had fought in or been a part of World War Two. I came home and asked dad if we could do something. He had a media production company at the time, and we were able to use a lot of the expertise and resources that he had.”
The film caused quite a stir at the school for its exceptional quality, but that isn’t the high of the acclaim it received. It was also sent to director Steven Spielberg, who said of it: “Astounding. An impressive work… that brings to life all those in your family who were part of the war.”
The significance of that praise didn’t really strike Daniel until he was older: “I’m probably more amazed now than I was then. We didn’t send it immediately; we waited a couple of years until when I had my Bar Mitzvah.”
Harold’s War will be showing at the East Riding Theatre on 5th September, but those who can’t make it on the day needn’t miss out, as a recording of the show will be put online after the performance.

A FOND FAREWELL
Or Ribon, UJIA/JAFI Community Shlicha, offers a heartfelt goodbye in her final JLIfe column.
Two years ago, I got here in Manchester, a young Israeli breaking out of her shell for the first time – ready to experience a different culture, community, and people.
As I got here – I discovered the most amazing community and people. You have opened your homes to me time and time again – every Shabbat dinner, every Chag, making me feel at home from the very first minute. You have opened a new gate for me – to explore Jewish peoplehood and my own identity as a Jewish woman. Getting to be a part of UJIA and your amazing and special community for a short time – was truly a privilege and a blessing.
When I left Israel and got on a plane to the UK, I had a picture of what this Shlichut would look like – but of course, as we all know, life sometimes has very different plans for us.
I never imagined being so far away from home at a time like this – Never imagined my friends being buried and me not being there, never imagined experiencing situations like
With Marc Levy, Chief Executive of the Jewish Representative Council
I had the privilege of joining a UJIA delegation of young leaders to Israel. It was an emotional trip as we visited some of the sites targeted during the October 7th terrorist attacks. We spoke with those who survived that fateful day fighting and hiding in Kibbutzim while the memorial at the Nova Music Festival will live with me forever. It is also impossible not to feel a deep sense of pain when walking through Hostage Square and looking at the exhibits that carry such symbolic meaning.
These are uniquely challenging times but the dignified way in which Israel is facing up to this impossible situation is inspiring. Seeing our heroes walking round in uniform always
all of us did this year, and especially did not imagine going through all of this without my family and friends by my side, without being able to comfort them, and they – me.
When our world turned upside down –you were my family. The communal prayers, vigils, and events gave me hope and strength amid the darkest of times, your hugs and warm smiles, your understanding, and care gave me comfort and reminded me that wherever there is Jewish Life – I am, in a way – home.
Now, the time for me has come to come back to my first home – and I am carrying with me all those moments, people, and memories of the past two years.
You know where to find me – I hope to see you in Israel from time to time. Toda, for every single moment.

We Will Dance Again OUR COMMUNITY
stirs emotions as you look at people so young willing to sacrifice everything for their country.
We discussed the future and what that means for residents of the Kibbutzim who thought they were living in a utopian society only to be targeted in the most brutal manner possible. They remain resolute and determined to return to their homes and rebuild communities. The famous words from Mia Schem, a survivor of the music festival: “We will dance again” also resonated strongly as we heard testimony of DJs who returned to play their sets.
With the country at war, there are issues with food poverty but again you are left in awe with how vulnerable people are cared
for. Our group volunteered at Leket who pick surplus agricultural produce, collect cooked meals whilst distributing them to the needy throughout the country. This is in keeping with the agricultural roots of the Shavuot festival we recently celebrated.
Having returned, it is clear there are difficult times ahead. However, people should rest assured that Israelis are continuing with their daily lives despite the immense pain and uncertainty unleashed upon them.
Those who live there have an inner strength that makes you proud to be both Jewish and a Zionist.

Co-Owner Giles explains how the brand-new space allows the gallery to reach more collectors: “We’ve been at the current location for 19 years, which has been successful and worked really well. We have built up a customer base of collectors in Cheshire already, but it’s been frustrating. We know we have some fantastic work but the geography of us being in Lancashire and having so many collectors in Cheshire was always quite difficult. We wanted to make it easier for collectors to see the work, because we know we’ve got some brilliant collections.”
The new location opened its doors on 1st May and is already a success: “We’ve met lots of really nice customers and established collectors, as well as some familiar faces that we’ve dealt with over the years at the Chorley gallery. It’s been refreshing to meet so many enthusiastic art lovers who are very knowledgeable about their art already.”
Giles originally opened the Chorley location with his father Clive nearly 20 years ago: “My father and I set up the gallery in 2005. He subsequently retired in 2020, but he still keeps a watchful eye on what we’re up to. So, it’s always been a family business. My daughter actually lives in Wilmslow as well, so it’s an area that we’ve got quite a close affinity to and affection for.”
Twice winning the title of ‘Retail Art Gallery of the Year’ from the Fine Art Trade Guild, the gallery now specialises in original paintings and champions contemporary UK and international artists hosting personal appearances by artists from around the world. It was a passion for art
and a lack of access to the kinds of pieces they wanted to collect which led the pair to start the venture: “Clive and I were both collectors, and over time we recognised that a lot of the galleries that were around 20 years ago were focused on limited edition prints. We were very enthusiastic
about original paintings. So, we opened it really to make the viewing and purchasing of original paintings easier for collectors in Lancashire, because there was very little on offer.”
The thing that keeps collectors coming back to the galleries time after time is the personalised service Giles and the team are able to provide: “One of the main advantages of an independent gallery is the variety of artwork on show. We’ve got a real breadth of knowledge of the marketplace but also – importantly in the art world – because you’re dealing with us as the owners, we will also be the same people who will be here in 20 years’ time when you come back to us. One of the problems with dealing with a high street chain is that you deal with a salesperson but when you go back a few years down the line,
that person is not there. There’s a longevity of the relationship when you’re dealing with us.”
Being so passionate about art, Giles naturally has a large collection of his own: “There are always pieces that you have a particular affection for. One of the challenges as a dealer is to be able to let things go, but there are certain pieces where you can’t let them go, you feel so strongly about it. My personal favourite artist is Geoffrey Key, a Salford-based artist who my wife and I have been collecting for years. We have a number of Geoffrey’s pieces that we wouldn’t part with, whatever the offer.”

In a world full of different styles and fashion choices, it can be difficult to know where to look when out shopping. On the high street, the list of clothing brands vying for your hard-earned cash seems endless, often selling similar things, so we asked Debbie McDermott, Owner of Velvet in Ramsbottom, which brands she’s loving at the moment.
White Stuff
White Stuff was founded in 1985, by friends George Treves and Sean Thomas, who came up with the idea of selling t-shirts to fund a trip they wanted to take to the Alps. The name ‘White Stuff’ is in fact a reference to the snow of the mountain range. It’s a UK brand which prides itself on making clothes for everyone, but which don’t look like everyone else’s. The brand designs all of its prints in-house, inspired by anything from fine art to architecture. In keeping with the aim for providing clothing for everyone, and has recently undertaken a project using some of its own customers as models.
“It’s been a really strong season. White Stuff has been particularly strong, they’ve delivered on time and the colours have been amazing. As a brand they’re actually reinventing themselves and have got new designers, so that’s been really strong,” says Debbie.

Dolcezza
Barbour
The oldest brand on this list, Barbour was founded by John Barbour in 1894, and was originally named J Barbour & Sons. The brand has a long history, including establishing a motorcycling line which was worn by every UK international team between 1936 and 1977, being the jacket of choice at acts at Glastonbury in 2007, and most recently, in 2022 winning Best Circularity Award at the Drapers Sustainable Fashion Awards for its Wax for Life initiative.
Debbie really recommends Barbour for both its women’s and men’s options: “It’s a British brand with lots of history that’s very strong for both menswear and ladieswear. People love the story of the brand, and it’s a growing brand in our shop. It gets stronger every season and we have to keep buying more.”

Established 15 years ago, Dolcezza is a striking brand now for its bold prints. With garments made of natural fabrics, Dolcezza’s designers prize comfort and fit in the collection. Its new line, Simply Art, has turned works of art from several artists into vibrant summery designs.
This brand has impressed Debbie with its interesting approach to its new range: “Dolcezza is a really lovely brand, from Canada. For the new range an artist paints a picture and then that picture is digitally printed onto the products. There are about seven different artists in the range.”

Jewish Hollywood will return to Hope Mill Theatre after its previous cancellation. We spoke to Producer Katy Lipton about the toe-tapping production.
Aria Entertainment has announced that Jewish Hollywood is returning to Hope Mill Theatre after being cancelled due to COVID back in 2020. Famed producer Katy Lipson, know for RAGS, The Jewish Legends, The Great Jewish American Songbook, That’s Jewish Entertainment, and Bar Mitzvah Boy, presents Jewish Hollywood, A Musical Revue with a script by Chris Burgess.
The show will allow you to live a century of Jewish cinema in one evening. The Jews of Hollywood invented the ‘American Dream’. And they lived it! They came from shtetls but ended up in Beverly Hills mansions. And they sold the world a ‘Technicolor’ fantasy version of American life.
We spoke to Producer Katy Lipson about why she put this show together: “I commissioned this show as I regularly produce a show celebrating the Jewish contribution to show business and thought this would be the next best in the series! Previous shows include The Jewish Legacy, The Jewish Legends, That’s Jewish Entertainment and The Great Jewish American Songbook.”
In her role as producer, Katy is the powerhouse behind the production, making the show happen: “The producer does everything from choosing the title, venue, financial modelling, deciding dates to assigning the
creative team, finding the cast, marketing the show and most importantly selling tickets!”
Jewish Hollywood features a range of hit songs including: Hava Nagila, Don’t Rain on My Parade, My Yiddishe Momme, Tradition, Second Hand Rose, The Way We Were, Putting on the Ritz, Theme from ‘Exodus’, and many more! For Katy, there’s one song that stands out: “My Yiddeshe Momme. What’s there not to love?”
An emotional work, the revue tells stories of ambition and sacrifice. What was the price paid for assimilation? How did the Jews of Hollywood confront antisemitism? How did the Holocaust change their depiction of Jews on-screen? How badly hit were they by the notorious blacklisting of the 1950s? And what caused the rebirth of Jewish cinema in the 1960s – giving rise to stars like Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen and Bette Midler? Even with the intense emotional subject, putting the show together has been a blast: “It’s always a joyous experience visiting the incredible plethora of musical scores and hearing these wonderful stories of show business performed by an amazing troupe of performers.”
The show will run from 3rd September to 8th September! Book tickets now to avoid disappointment.

"Jewish Hollywood gives a long overdue celebration to the successes of the musicmakers and masters of entertainment carrying the weight of generations of persecution on their shoulders. Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. Schools cannot afford to ignore it and, indeed, are doing students a disservice if they do not properly discuss and agree their fundamental approach to its use. As such, it is important to write an AI policy – there are many samples and templates out there to borrow from – though of course the school needs to first decide just how much they wish to embrace the potential of AI.
At Queen Ethelburga’s, our approach has very much been to see AI as a tool to enhance and support learners and teachers. Why wouldn’t we? It is already so embedded in daily life in different forms, whether it be driverless cars, facial recognition, or suggested viewing on streaming platforms, that to not make use of it seems counterintuitive. Not only this, but as AI is increasingly being utilised in a range of careers including early diagnoses of medical conditions, analysing market trends, or making hiring decisions, we feel obligated to increase student exposure to the potential of AI. They will be entering a very different employment landscape to even 10 years ago and we owe it to them to prepare them as best we can for their futures –isn’t that our fundamental purpose as educators?
So, given this approach, we wrote a policy (helped by an AI model of course – they are good for that!) outlining to staff not only how AI can be used by teachers, leaders, and support staff but how this must be done in a responsible way, considering issues around ethics, data privacy, and bias. This is the same message that was then repeated to students in a series of assemblies in September, delivered in an age-appropriate way and reflecting the different safeguarding guidelines for those under 13, those from 13 to 18, and those over 18. There has been an emphasis with all students under 18 to use AI models that do not require a log in and to ensure they appreciate they should not be
Academic Director at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, Kevin Oldershaw, explains the importance for schools to have a clear approach to the use of AI.
entering personal identifiable information into any website if they do not know how it will be used. For the younger students, the approach has very much been to work with their teachers in lessons using AI as a class, but for the older ones, the focus is on encouraging them to experiment with how it can help them, in a controlled and managed environment.
As we have moved through the year, we, other educators and governing bodies began to get to grips with how AI can, and is, being used. As various guidance began to be published and updated, we produced our own documentation for students helping them to better understand when it is, and isn’t, acceptable to use AI in their education, how to appropriately reference the use of AI in coursework, and how to work closely with their teachers to learn the best strategies.
Further work was done with teachers on how to use AI most effectively, ensuring the use was conversational, crafting the most effective prompts and then building on these to train the AI model exactly what you need from it. As teachers used to clearly articulating to students what we want them to do, observing their responses and then amending our instructions
and guidance, we are ideally placed to be able to train AI models in the same way. Our academic staff have been able to opt into a range of CPD training sessions where staff learnt how to model AI best practice in the classroom, how to use AI to personalise their teaching, how to provide feedback to students and how they can help tackle intense workloads to increase their contact time with students.
Appreciating the importance of the need to keep up to date with this rapidly developing area and to ensure that AI is seen as a tool for people to use, not to fear, we created and recruited for a new role Head of Cognitive Science and Digital Literacy. As an experienced teacher within Creative Media and enthusiastic user of technology, Jason Sharma-Pay is ideally placed to not only help us further develop our digital strategy but to better understand how human creativity, empathy, emotional intelligence, and capacity for critical thought can ensure artificial intelligence enhances teaching, learning and student outcomes.

Dan Lacey, Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning at the school, commented: "The content has been designed by MGS teachers to give a taste of undergraduate study, helping to inform pupils’ subject choices and bridge the gap between academic study at sixth form and university level. With five courses under construction this year, MGS will host twelve academic courses by summer 2024, all of which will be publicly available at no cost. We believe that combining educational technology with MGS
teachers’ academic expertise has resulted in high-quality, educational content of benefit to the MGS community and others around the world."
The initiative reflects the school's commitment to leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes and expand learning opportunities for students globally. MGS will soon be offering more courses covering a wide array of subjects designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and support academic progression.
The school aims to teach boys to think for themselves and to develop a life-long love of learning. Lessons are taught by academic specialists with a passion for their subject, and teaching goes well beyond the narrow confines of examination syllabuses, offering students the best preparation for the very top universities, both in this country and abroad.

MP VISIT
B-ICC North West welcomed guests from across the north to hear politician and barrister Suella Braverman MP.
A fascinating afternoon event for over 150 at Manchester Hall with former home secretary Suella Braverman was hosted by B-ICC North West in May. Nigel Tobias, new Executive Director of B-ICC, welcomed guests including sponsor and Israel Bonds Head of International Sales and Operations Arnon Perlman. Arnon took to the floor first and described how the current conflict has been affecting the economy, and his take on the current landscape. Arnon also charted his career which started as a fledgling reporter, to working as a consul general for the Israeli Consulate in China and serving in the media division of Ariel Sharon’s government: “Israel Bonds is proud to be the sponsor of this event,” he said. “Israel is an amazing country, we have a genius innovation, and we are flourishing today, despite constant war. I am proud that has raised over $50 million for Israel over 73 years, but Israel’s needs all our support more than ever, and investment in our bonds, and we will continue to support the economy despite whatever challenges we face.”
Conservative MP Mrs Braverman, who is known for speaking out against antisemitism, began her talk on the situation in Israel, saying: “It’s vital that trade between UK and Israel continues to grow, I know the governments are working hard on this, Israel is powerhouse
of innovation, enterprise and technology, this is a challenging time for the country and the Jewish community, I’d like to reconfirm my support and the support of the government to Israel and for the community here in the UK.” Emotionally describing her recent visit to Israel, Mrs Braverman relived her journey seeing firsthand the Gaza area, and meeting IDF representatives, survivors and parents of hostages: “I was blown away by the resilience of the people, defiant to defeat evil. It was incredibly inspiring. I met people living in makeshift accommodation, their world turned upside down, and heard some tragic stories. I believe the NATO alliance must invest heavily
to combat the threats of hostile states.”
Turning to domestic matters, Mrs Braverman said: “I’ve been disappointed with the lack of policing at the hate marches in the UK. The community deserves a safe environment, and antisemitism, hatred and threats have been allowed to go unenforced. I want to apologise on behalf of the government. Antisemitism is racism. There is a solution, and the police should be confronting and arresting those causing incitement. Strong leadership and zero tolerance is required, the Jewish people have been attacked for so many years, but it has shown the resilience to get through and win, you will do so again.”
Journalist and broadcaster Angela Epstein then facilitated a question-and-answer session following a standing ovation to round off the event.

B-ICC Strengthens Bilateral Trade
Nearly thirty years old, the B-ICC, working with the Embassy of Israel and the U.K. Government, strives to increase Bilateral Trade between the U.K. and Israel, to strengthen relations between businesses, and to advocate for Israel.
Chief Executive, Nigel Tobias, said: “Since October 7th attack, there have been incessant attempts to delegitimise Israel which, more than in living memory, needs support in keeping its economy strong.
“The B-ICC has regularly hosted excellent speakers and events and our recent, no-charge, presentations featuring Suella Braverman KC MP, and Gadi Ezra admirably prove this point.
“These events are not financially insignificant and, while our committee volunteers its time freely, we exist only through the grace of our Members and Sponsors.
“On behalf of our President Robert Levy, myself and our committee, please can we urge you to consider either joining the B-ICC and/or sponsoring future events, so that we can continue to promote, as is needed more than ever, all that is good about Israel, and the benefits therein to the U.K.

New Site for Brevel
Microalgae protein company Brevel, Ltd. has opened its first commercial plant in Israel. The new facility covers an impressive 27,000 sq. ft (2,500 sq. meters) and has the capacity to produce hundreds of tons of microalgae protein powder to serve the flourishing global alternative protein space. This protein is clean, non-GMO, planet friendly and makes a breakthrough in delivering a truly market viable solution.
The new site located in the desert periphery facilitates the introduction of Brevel's new plant protein to the commercial food market by bringing production up to industrial levels.
From the new facility, Brevel can provide a fresh source of protein extracted from the uniquely grown microalgae belonging to the chlorella family. The resulting ingredient is highly nutritious possessing the full amino-acid profile and highly cost-effective. It has a neutral flavour and colour and leaves a negligible environmental footprint. The company expects the new facility to start rolling its first products by the first quarter of 2025.
"Combining light and fermentation to produce microalgae is like putting an electric motor into a Tesla car," explains Yonatan Golan, Brevel's Co-Founder and CEO. "It may sound like a very simple straightforward task to achieve but is actually extremely complex. Until now, fermentation has been confined to dark environments and is instrumental in producing the extremely high yields. However, microalgae's natural makeup of nutrients — including protein, lipids, fiber, and pigments — depend on photosynthesis for their development and growth."

MAKING HAY
Hale-based accountants Alexander Knight & Co
takes a look at ways seasonal businesses can increase their revenue all year round.
Operating a seasonal business presents unique challenges, particularly when it comes to managing the off-season. However, with strategic planning and creative thinking, business owners can successfully navigate these periods and find additional avenues of revenue.
Here are several strategies to optimise operations and capitalise on available resources during the quieter times.
Diversify your offering
Diversification helps maintain a steady stream of revenue and keeps the business relevant year-round. For instance, a gym that opens a few specific hours a day can offer yoga classes inbetween classes. A café that sells tea and coffee in the daytime could offer cocktails in the evening.
Leverage your space
Businesses can repurpose their premises for different activities. For example, a wedding venue might not see as many bookings in the winter but can host corporate events, conferences, or community classes. Retail spaces can be transformed into pop-up shops, art galleries, or co-working spaces. By maximising the use of their space, business owners can tap into new markets and increase revenue streams.
Marketing
Effective marketing during the off-season can help sustain customer interest and drive sales. Businesses should maintain an active online presence through social media, email newsletters, and targeted advertising. Offering special promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs can incentivise customers to continue spending.
Form strategic partnerships
Collaborating with other businesses can be mutually beneficial during slow periods. Teaming up to offer bundled packages can enhance the value proposition for customers and create additional revenue opportunities.
Invest in staff training
The off-season is an ideal time to invest in staff training and development. Offering professional development opportunities, such as workshops and courses, can improve employee skills and morale. Well-trained staff are more efficient and will provide better service.
Explore e-commerce
For businesses with a physical presence not online, expanding into e-commerce can provide a steady income stream during the off-season.
Time to optimise operations
During quieter periods, business owners should evaluate their operations and identify areas for improvement. This might include streamlining processes, reducing unnecessary expenses, or upgrading equipment. By increasing operational efficiency, businesses can reduce costs and be better prepared for the busy season.
Seasonal business come with challenges, but business owners can turn the off-season into a period of opportunity and growth.

Hi Gadi, welcome to the UK! You’ve had an impressive career so far, tell us about your highlights?
Throughout my career, I was fortunate enough to contribute to the wellbeing and security of our people through various positions. From serving as a legal advisor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continuing with advising the defence establishment on strategic matters, and until January 2023, as director of the national public diplomacy unit in the prime minister’s office, overseeing and coordinating Israel’s spokesmanship regarding all its target audiences. Lately, I have published my debut book, “11 Days in Gaza”, which showcases my team’s experience in Operation Cast Lead (2009). I’m a big believer in education, so while doing that, I was lucky to pursue three law degrees from Tel Aviv University and NYU Law. More importantly, it is the personal peaks that matter the most. Two years ago, I became a father, which is pure joy. Currently I’m providing commentaries on Relevant channel in Israel, and in international outlets, regarding Israel’s challenges.
You have worked at the Israeli MFA advising on the Israel-Palestinian conflict, tell us how you’ve been involved, and your thoughts and hopes for a resolution pathway?
While in the foreign ministry, I got a frontrow seat to the art of diplomacy. Back then, I accompanied diplomats throughout various engagements, providing legal analysis regarding some of the most complex legal and political challenges Israel faces and partook in cardinal decision-making processes. I have learned two main things during that time. The first is that the pathway to a resolution is highly complicated, primarily because the other side simply refuses to acknowledge the Jewish component in Israel’s identity. One must add the multiple security interests that must

A UJIA and B-ICC joint breakfast event welcomed former director of Israel’s National Public Diplomacy Unit and Human Rights Attorney Gadi Ezra. Gadi, who flew in for the event from Israel where he has been serving as a reservist, has been captivating audiences around the world with his unique insights on legal principles in modern warfare, and his experiences during the conflict in Gaza. We caught up with Gadi at the event.
be ensured when such a resolution is crafted. The second thing I learned is that my field experience as a reservist is an advantage because I know what the translation of many celebrated international laws looks like in real life. That understanding increased the accuracy of my work. Also, it led me to provide hundreds of briefings and lectures worldwide about my dual perspective on war: as a human rights attorney and special forces veteran.
How important is the role of the media both here in UK and in Israel to this?
The role of the media in shaping public opinion and leadership’s identity cannot be overstated. It is not just a tool for disseminating information but a powerful force that can influence perceptions and decisions. Therefore, the information domain is as crucial as the kinetic one in any conflict or negotiation.
Tell us more about your talk “From the Law Books to the Battlefield”?
In that talk, I share my team’s story from a down-to-earth perspective, meaning you don’t have to be a lawyer to understand it. I analyse
scenarios we have gone through, explain what the law expected us to do, and then explain what we did in real life. The purpose is double: to stress the complexity of modern urban warfare and exemplify Israel’s high standards from an articulated viewpoint familiar with the law and practice. I can tell you this talk was not just “preached to the choir.” In Brazil, for example, I had a crowd; nearly half of it was Palestinians. It is well accepted not because it is apologetic about Israel’s inherent right for self-defence and territorial integrity – it’s not – but because I try to balance professional knowledge, rather than slogans, with sensitivity when discussing such a complicated issue. My book details that story in length, without the legal analysis, though.
Finally Gadi, tell us about your family and what you enjoy away from work, and your plans for the future?
I’m married to a woman who is undoubtedly the brain in the house, and together, we raise our young child and the dog. I’m a nerd, so I love to read when I have time, work out, and maintain a healthy lifestyle as much as possible. As for the future, I know it will involve contributing to our people somehow.

The Scoop on Lowering Sugar
A5 PORTRAIT
On a fresh mission to offer health-conscious consumers guilt-free indulgence in ice creams and sorbets, Better Juice, has expanded its innovative sugar-reduction technology to lower the sugar loads in fruit sorbets. This will grant manufacturers new opportunities to give their products a better-for-you upgrade. The Food Tech startup will showcase the reduced sugar sorbet at the IFT Expo, in Chicago, on 15th to 17th July.
The ingredient list of the beloved frosty scoops typically includes around 50% puréed fruit, added sugars, or alternative sweeteners, and water. Sorbets are generally viewed by consumers as refreshing innocent delights to cool down with in the summer, imbued with natural goodness from real fruits.
The downside to sorbets is their naturally high sugar content: "Even products claiming zero added sugar still house approximately 6% to 10% sugar from the fruit juice concentrates alone," explains Gali Yarom, Co-Founder and CEO of Better Juice. Sorbet's glycemic index typically surpasses that of ice cream because it contains sugar from the fruits and no fat, leading to quicker absorption of sugars into the bloodstream.”

To create sugar-reduced sorbets, the company successfully adapted its patentprotected technology to process fruit concentrates and purées, the core ingredient of sorbets. The start-up produced sorbets in a range of flavours, including apple, orange, and strawberry, reducing sugar content by 50% to 70% and calories by 40%.

Jewish commandos were honoured by members of AJEX from both Manchester and London.
Members of AJEX and serving personnel from Manchester and London attended a ceremony in Harlech to honour the Commanding Officer and men of No. 3 Troop of the No. 10 Commando, otherwise known as X Troop, who served during the Second World War.
X Troop comprised German and Austrian Jewish refugees who were recruited because of their language skills and were trained to a very high standard as special forces to operate behind enemy lines. Their dangerous work was critical in the run up to and success of D Day, and beyond.
At the special service to unveil a plaque the Memorial Prayer was recited in Hebrew and English by Army Chaplain, Rabbi (Captain) Nir Nadav and the exhortation was read by Colonel Martin Newman.
Visitors attended from overseas including the son of one of the original commandos who travelled from New Jersey, USA.

The Nicky’s most recent day out saw members setting sail on a canal boat down the Macclesfield Canal.
It was all ship-shape for The Nicky’s recent adventure when members spent an enjoyable time aboard The New Horizon, a canal boat on the Macclesfield Canal.
Eight members of The Nicky, accompanied by members of staff, quickly found their sea legs, and despite the inclement weather had a whale of a time! The boat cruised from Marple to Higher Poynton and back with time for a leisurely lunch, tea breaks, and a stop for ice cream.
David Delew, Chief Executive of The Nicky, said: “We run a few canal trips every year in addition to our daily activities at the centre itself. They are always popular and oversubscribed. While The Nicky has been the jewel in the crown of the North Manchester Jewish Community we are now offering our facilities to people in South Manchester with transport provided both ways.”

Chief Rabbi Joins Bar-Ilan Council
Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis has agreed to join Israel’s Bar-Ilan University’s Council of Founders.
A long-standing supporter of Bar-Ilan, one of Israel’s leading universities which combines cutting-edge scientific research with education steeped in Jewish values, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis will now serve on its Council. Composed of fourteen members, half living in Israel and half overseas, the Bar-Ilan University Council’s
role is to provide spiritual direction to the university. The university now has over 20,000 students and is the fastest growing university in Israel.
Bar-Ilan is the only university in Israel where students are required to complete foundation courses in Jewish Studies. This unique approach
ensures every student graduates with a full appreciation of Jewish culture, history, and heritage. In response to his appointment, the Chief Rabbi commented:
“As a great admirer of the achievements of Bar Ilan University, I am honoured to have been elected on to Bar-Ilan’s Council of Founders. As one of Israel’s leading institutions of higher education, the university gives a contribution of inestimable value to the State of Israel and the Jewish world, by educating and inspiring its students with core Jewish values at its heart. I extend best wishes to Bar-Ilan for continuous success through these most challenging of times.”
Commenting on the Chief Rabbi’s appointment, Max Dunbar, Executive Director of the British Friends of Bar-Ilan, said: “We are thrilled the Chief Rabbi has been elected on to this prestigious Council. Bar-Ilan will benefit hugely from his vast knowledge and wisdom. We are looking forward to working with the Chief Rabbi over the coming months and years, helping us connect the UK closer to Bar-Ilan.”

With tennis season in full flow, find out how to throw the perfect Wimbledon party.
Wimbledon is the ideal time to plan a gathering of your friends and family for a celebration of tennis, tradition, and British summer vibes! Whether you’re a fan or just love a good party, JLife’s guide to hosting the ultimate tennisthemed bash will have everyone saying, ‘Game, Set, Match!’ So, grab your tennis whites, pour yourself a Pimm’s, and get ready to celebrate in style!
Setting the scene
While your guests won’t be expecting perfectly manicured lawns like the ones at the All-England Club, having your outdoor space in tip top condition will make a good first impression. So, take some time to mow the lawn, trim the hedges, and dig out the weeds to create an inviting atmosphere. Set up plenty of seatingoutdoor tables and patio chairs for eating, garden sofas, loungers, or beanbags for chilling – you could even grab a couple of hay bales and cover them with throws. If your party day is cooler, consider providing blankets to keep the chill at bay.
Create a festive atmosphere by decorating your space in Wimbledon’s trademark green and purple colours or go all out with a Union Jack theme and a riot of red, white, and blue! If you have enough space, set up a viewing area with TV and seating so guests can watch some of the action. For an extra touch try tennis ball balloons around the party area and use rackets and balls as centrepieces on your table. Consider setting up a photo booth with tennis-themed props for
fun photos that your guests can take home as mementos.
Given the unpredictable British weather, it’s probably a good idea to have a Plan B in the shape of a covered area or small marquee in case rain stops play.
Dress
code
Are you going high end or casual? Whatever you decide, encouraging your guests to dress in tennis whites will add to the fun. Think crisp white shorts, summer dresses, or even sports-inspired outfits for a touch of Wimbledon style.
When it comes to food it has to be the classic Wimbledon dessert – strawberries and cream! Arrange platters of juicy strawberries alongside bowls of whipped cream for a delicious and traditional treat. Include other British summer treats such as cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and Victoria sponge.
Activities
Keep your guests entertained with fun Wimbledon-themed activities and games that everyone can enjoy. Set up a mini tennis court and organise a friendly tournament for your
Food and drink
It wouldn’t be Wimbledon without Pimm’s. The Original Pimm’s No 1 is traditionally topped with lemonade or can be made using ginger beer. If you’re really pushing the boat out, a Pimm’s Royale is made using Champagne instead of lemonade. Whichever you decide, don’t forget to top up your creation with fresh mint leaves, chopped strawberries, sliced orange, chopped cucumber and plenty of ice.
guests. You could even award prizes to the winners to add to the competitive spirit. How about some fun bingo cards with tennis-related words and phrases for guests to mark off while watching the matches. It’s a fun way to get everyone involved and engaged in the action. For younger guests, consider setting up a treasure hunt or other Wimbledon-themed games to keep them entertained and active throughout the day.

Josh Glancy met Ayelet Gundar Goshen and Lavie Tidhar at Jewish Book Week 2024, as Elaine Bermitz reports.
Last year, Israel lost two giants of fiction writing when AB Yehoshua and Amos Oz both passed away. Stepping forward, the remarkable Ayelet Gundar Goshen and ex-patriot Lavie Tidhar, who recently gave time to discuss their work with Josh Glancy, editor of the Sunday Times Review.
As a huge admirer and translator of Amos Oz's journalism and fiction I was drawn to Gundar's work because, in a sense she follows the same path rooting her fiction in the reality of the State of Israel, from its creation to commenting on its current state and further creating alternative futures.
Alternatively, Lavie’s current fiction brings Israel down from its position as an example to other states of the same immoral underbelly that all countries harbour. Writing in English he admits to being fully influenced by his Israeli upbringing but is convinced now that his influences are all external. The former science fiction fantasist is now putting together an epic series about Israel’s place in history, a project that will take several volumes.
Lavie left Israel at fifteen for South Africa where he wrote about vampires and across many genres, winning the 2012 World Fantasy awards. Coming to live in the UK in 2013 he has only recently come back to writing about Israel whereas Gundar has always been concerned about Israel and its people, being the granddaughter of a survivor. She was named after her uncle who was killed in the 1973 war. A qualified psychologist she was beginning a new novel when the events of October 7th made her sure that she would be better employed helping the victims and their families recover from the trauma of the invasion by Hamas.
Since then, she has worked constantly to allow these victims to express their traumas, believing that they needed to be heard and counselled immediately to protect them from PTSD and other guilt related mental illnesses. She has been unable to read for herself, only to her children, and is convinced that the war has affected all Israelis in some way, making them aware that they will always feel that they
must protect themselves first and foremost from attack.
Her fiction has always become a support for her, and the reach of her work is remarkable. Historical and humorous, "One Night, Markovitch" gives way to noir detective "Waking Lions" and again a psychological exploration of truth in "The Liar" Goshen is able to explore so many sides of fiction with ease and elegance. In contrast Lavie’s work is now more concentrated on shorter length works examining the effect of terrorism on the world. Punkish in style, he seeks to bring fantasy elements to all areas of literary fiction.
A fascination discussion around two completely different styles of fiction, complying to spread the highest standard of writing by two of Israel's great contemporary writers, neatly facilitated by the excellent Josh.
Cheers to That!
National Wine and Cheese Day is here! Why not celebrate on 25th July from the comfort of your own home.
Like all great duos, wine and cheese are meant to be together. Following these easy, fuss-free tips will help you to create a restaurant quality cheese board for a fraction of the price. There are no set rules when it comes to pairing wine and cheese but knowing the qualities of the two that work well together makes for a much tastier experience.
Starting with the wine, red is often the most common accompaniment for a lot of cheeses, but it doesn’t have to be limited to that. Both white and sparkling wines can also work well when paired with the right cheese. It is recommended to combine the two based on their levels of intensity and complexity as a fullbodied wine could overpower a more delicate cheese and vice versa. As a rule of thumb, wine and cheeses from the same country or region tend to work very well together as what grows together, goes together.
Simple, well-known pairings are the best
way to start when creating your DIY couplings at home. Chardonnay and camembert blend together beautifully because the acidity in the wine combined with the creamy, buttery cheese makes for a perfect balance of flavours. For fresher, milder cheeses like mozzarella, a light white wine such as a pinot grigio works perfectly together as it allows for the delicate flavours of both parties to come through. On the other end of the scale, the more pungent and bolder flavours of stilton match perfectly with a vintage port as it packs enough sweetness and depth to work in harmony with the powerful stilton tang.
But why stop at creating your own cheese board? Give yours that extra homemade touch by making your own ingredients at home. With most kits that are available on the market, the only things you’ll need is the ability to follow instructions, time to let the ingredients ferment and patience! Making
cheese and wine at home can sound like a daunting task but with kits like the ones available at Thecheesemakingcompany. com and Lovebrewing.co.uk that take all the stress and worry away by providing in-depth instructions, you can learn a new skill with the reward of delectable treats at the end. By producing your own ingredients for cheese boards, you can tailor them to suit your own tastes as well as having fun in the process.
Whether you DIY your ingredients or buy the goods from one of the increasing independent wine shops popping up across the area, shopping locally and independently not only provides a more personal and enjoyable experience but can often be a cheaper way to shop. And once you have the knowledge to create your own wine and cheese, there’s no reason not to invite your friends round to impress and delight them with your talents again and again!
AND... BY THE WAY
Rabbi Greg Bank, of Yeshurun Cheadle & Gatley Synagogue, explores
the significance of a well used phrase.
'And by the way,’ is a useful expression. The four-word combo can used to relegate a situation or discussion to a level of insignificance or triviality.
When the kids break a window, they will give us a full run down of their sports fixtures in the garden, detailing the fun they had, who scored the goals, the colour of the Smarties on their ice cream and the minutia of their conversation. Then they casually slip in the damaging news: “Oh by the way, we broke a window.” By the way… Is it really ‘by the way?’ Isn’t it important news?
I once invited guests home to our house for Shabbat. My wife prepared a gourmet meat meal. Five minutes before Shabbat came in, it dawned on me that the guests were vegetarian. I went to my wife and said: “By the way, the guests coming in a few minutes are vegetarian.” She replied: “That is not a “by the way” side point. It is the central point!”
Have you ever gone up to give a presentation or to a very public setting and someone whispers to you: “By the way your fly is undone?”
The warning is appreciated and is a real-life saver but it is certainly not ‘a by the way’ fact.
It is interesting that things that are important are presented as passing comments. There is a value to this. In the classroom, more and more studies show that children learn more from accidental education than from frontal lessons. The ‘by the way’ titbits that the
CLASSIFIEDS
teacher throws into the lesson, the pictures and quotes on the walls and the lyrics of a song all slip into the learners’ minds almost by osmosis because of the subtle way in which they are presented.
In literature, ‘by the way’ comments appear as parenthesis. We used brackets to add in extra things and facts. Let us remember though, these are not immaterial side notes. They are actually key features of the piece.
The Torah uses brackets in the Book of Bamidbar. Among all the complaints of the Children of Israel, a key phrase appears in
A
COMMUNIT Y UJIA Shaliach, Sahar Sazgar discuss Shlichut, fostering a love of Israel
“For the Lord your G-d is bringing you to a good land, a land with brooks of water, fountains and depths, that emerge in valleys and mountains”
(Devarim 7:7)
As a Shaliach that spends most of his time with the young generation of the Jewish community, my primar y responsibility is to educate. The real challenge of my Shlichut is the understanding that my role is not just to educate towards a cer tain formal behaviour, but also to enhance and promote a par ticular feeling – ‘ahavat ha’aretz’, love of countr y But how does one educate those feelings and more specifically, a love of Israel? As a young Israeli, a ‘chanich’ in a youth movement and a high school student who was extremely motivated before and during his army ser vice, ‘ahavat ha’aretz’ had been an instrument al value that
shaped my growing up process. During trips throughout Israel, know ever y mountain and ever y road, and stories and traditions, have alw an integral par t of my life. The unde that Israel is my home always motiva enhance my knowledge of the uniq that formed my identity. As the unde and knowledge advances, a strong follows.
Still, the challenge remains: ho educate young people who don’t li to love Israel and have these passiona towards the Jewish state? Some argue unconditional love is achieved once accept the occasional negativities. I have the privilege to educate the Jewish generation to love Israel. I do explaining the facts. The fact that Is per fect countr y, it’s young and still learning. At the same time, the Jewish accomplished so many achievements last 71 years, a fact that shouldn’t be granted.
