INTRODUCTION Detailing is the articulation of the structure and construction. Principles are explained in brief and backed by extensive study of the detailing done by maestros to understand how to design details. The discussion includes reviews of recent built works that extract underlying principles that can be the basis for new patterns or the alteration and addition to existing patterns.

In guiding a design from idea to reality, architects design a set of details that show how structure will be put together. The aesthetics are only a small fraction of good design and that stability and functionality require a deep understanding of how elements come together.

Art of Detailing will help bring the elements together with a well fleshed-out design that communicated accurately at all levels of the construction process.

JOINERY Students are required to study the joinery between wood, wood with metal and between metal. None of the members should exceed the size of 50mm x 75mm. Students are also required to make the required drawings in the explained format and create prototype in scale 1:1.

Wood to Wood Joinery It is a combination of tongue and groove joints. It is a much stronger joint as it provides more adjoining surface areas. This is particularly useful in joining edge to edge. The edges are of central pieces are extended to hide the edges of the joint.

Wood to Metal Joinery The metal acts as a connector reinforcing the joint. It provides a frame to take the load of the structure and thus reduces the amount of wood required to finish the product. This makes the product light weight. As seen in this joinery, The wooden elements in the leg have a decreasing width making it light wieght while the load only rests on the metal box section.

12 Metal to Metal Joinery This is a simple joint that requires a slit on an angle to join the two metal strips. Metal strengthens the joint and reinforces the load bearing capacity, even with a slit joint.

DOORS Students are required to study three doors and prepare the detailed drawings. This study is backed by extensive study of the detailing done by the maestros to understand how to design details. Here, one door should be designed by any maestros and minimum one door study shall be live. Once this documentation in detail is completed, you are required to select any one door in which revised details are proposed without changing the overall design / concept of the original design. While proposing, one must keep in mind the ease of utilization, functionality and availability of the materials proposed.

The handle is changed from a hollow pipe to a flatter handle. It maintains the language of the door and has better grip.

The pivot opening. is split in two parts so it doesn’t obstruct another window when it is open.

The clear wooden board is changed with wooden paneling to create a more aesthetic look.

DESIGNING OF A STUDENT’S SPACE Amidst the new buildings that are thriving in the ‘CEPT University Campus’, the students are required to develop a ‘‘Students’ space’’ at the given site within the campus.

Site Location: The site is located at the West of the FA Wall - facing Canteen on west, CFP building entrance at North and Garba Ground on the east. Assume a water body in the North and design a space addressing the needs for students’ activities.

Prerequisite: Site Analysis, Students’ activities analysis, study of anthropometry for the proposed activities (if any) etc.

Site The space has two programs - dance and music. There is a lot of open space to pracitce and perform for smaller groups.

The enclosed space is for the music systems and band equipment. The open space can also serve as relaxing environment for the students.

The site is in the passage connecting the north lawns to the main ground. This passage continues from the north lawns to the south entrance. The tensile roofing is a continuation of the same.

The columns are supported at an angle by tension cables, mirroring the columns in the canteen area holding the cables above the main ground.

There are five columns supporting the main structure and the tensile roof.

Inside the space The two programs require an open space to practice.

The wooden structure provides sound aborbing acoustics. The natural filtering of light through the trees creates an interesting play of light in the space.

The glass windows help maintain a connection with the outside activities.

The contunuity of the circular path is followed through in all the elements of the space.

The shared FA building wall has full size mirrors for correcting the postures and formations. The mirrors also reflect sound and provide good acoustic qualities.

52 Staircase The staircase has a circular path, making it stand out of the context.

In order to not break the continuity of the staircase, the mid-landings are protruding outwards. It presents different views at different levels.

The structure of the staircase is suspended using tension cables. It makes a web over the canteen area, resembling the spokes of a cycle.

54 Door The door is divided in three parts - two fixed sections on the sides and a pivoting door. There is a curve cutting through all three elements, connecting them. There is another curve contained in the door frame to separate the openable portion.

Wood is the primary material used throughout the space in the form of paneling. Glass is used in the curve to increase visibility and play of light in the space.
