MANIFESTO

OF

SPACE

Malaysia is a multi-racial society with different languages and religion backgrounds. As a multi-racial society for numerous centuries, instead of promoting the beauty and progressive religious values to the world, the aspect of religions remains as sensitive matters to be discussed openly in Malaysia, ffence, this design project revolves finding common ground of spiritual beliefs for the multi-racial urban community. This multi-faith centre is a manifesto of space to encourage multi-religious exchange, as well as to promote spiritual growth. Architecturally, the building does not copy the architectural language of any place of worship but create a basic modern form to reflect a neutral architectural language to welcome people of all faiths. The core space of Multi-Faith Centre is a circumambulation circuit. It is the most common ritual circuit m almost all religion. The indefinite rotating scenes of circumambulation rituals of different religions will make users think about the universality of all religions.

This design scheme also meant to evoke an "emerging sensibility" towards spiritual realization. Generally, this building was meant to be a sanctuary for urban dwellers and workers out ol the havoc urban lifestyle. The idea of having a hideaway was intended to help the users to experience a sense of peacefulness and connects themselves to spiritual realms. Hence, pure geometry forms, rectangular, circle and square, are used because these forms are easy to be perceived and have the ability to defined spaces. All the building materials are without finishes to reflect its honestly and evoke a sense of humility precisely what users wanted to attain spiritually The design attempts to achieve a spiritual realm that disintegrates the reality. Thus perforated bricks were used to give the dematenalizing effects of the building mass. The water feature is one of the standard features of places of worship for ablutions or spiritual connections; it lets users calm their minds, reconnect to their inner self and detach their physical boundaries. There are two central courtyards in the building. Each courtyard is defined by four circular walls and covered by a circular skylight. These circular juxtapositions have projected strong shadow castings m the courtyard informing users the existence of light and reminding them about the origin of all bemgs.

Problem statement hethei" we believe it or not, the country's development is not solely relying on the economic growth alone. It is also dependent on the harmony and prosperity of our diversified ethnicity belief, and religion. Hence the positive narration needs to be curated and begin somewhere to preserve and empower the harmonious lifestyle among the nation so that the future generation can emulate it.

X he issue that we don't see here is that although the various rituals we practice as being part of the differences m beliefs and ethnicity may seem what makes us unique m its own way, we do not have a platform to accentuate, accept and appreciate the differences of others and that makes the notion of a symbol for unity an issue. As religious belief systems remain powerful and distinct but, alongside the differences, comes a call for greater tolerance and cohesion.

SPACES ^Vccordmg to the solid void diagram, the site area are very well being described as an urban jungle. There is vast development on the commercial area, and it seemed as if we are racing to build the highest building from one another. There is a need in proposing communal spaces as people needed the space so socialize, relax, and have a good time. The dire need of having a communal area could possibly harness a successful multi-racial community that can live together m harmony and peace withm the context of the urban city.

The initial idea was to respond to the surrotiding context.

The ground floor was recessed to produce a floating building.

Atrium were inserted. The two atriums divides the building into two; gallery & other functional space.

Circular holes were poked through atrium walls so that each areas have a sense of connectivity with one another.

Huge cylindrical walls were placed at the rooftop to directs sunlight in as well as giving contrast with the boxy building.

Finding Harmony Within Religious and Racial Tension The final design revolves around the intent to design for a " Multifaith Centre" which will serve the urban community a manifesto of space that promotes any kind of exchange in ideas and views that may promote the community's growth in mentality and also spiritually.

After so many years, religions and ethnicity were seen as a very sensitive matter to be discussed openly. Hence making us lack the courage to adress the issue objectively. We should never deny and ignore the importance of religious harmony and the concious to respect each other irrespective of people's background and religious leanings. It is about time we see through issues holistically and plan for the solution that will bring a greater good, for everyone as a whole.

This design is all about the huge concept of The ideology of this design is m a way to provide a win-win situation for all class of ages sexist m the context of the communities. It older adults as they age can live independently and safely in then- homes of choice with the right community transportation, social and health-care systems m place, realistically, we all benefit.

We benefit from their expertise and contributions to younger generations. The economy benefits, and society benefits.

Hence, as much as it is a design for the ageing community, this design had also in general placed mutual importance to other group of age. How do we do it? By letting the ageing group of people live with their wisdom. In return they will in a way be, what we would like to call as "A Living Artefact1 for the youngsters to learn from the ageing communities the knowledge they have possess and experience throughout the golden days of their lives. We are promoting a lifestyle rich with layers ol integration, where we leave no man behind, to have an unlimited flow of knowledge being passed down from one generation to another, both continuously and infinitely. That is this project's idea of Sustainable Senior Living.

All groups of interest were clustered in three categories, naming Library & Education, Studio & Culinary and Nursery & Farming.

is a design scheme meant to be a wisdom testament for the elderly. It's a wisdom collection pool where the elderly can continuously contribute to the society on their wisdom's for the continuity of future education m terms of knowledge (library & education), agricultural (nursery & farming) and arts (studio & culinary).

Generally they are the live archive of humanity. In this master plan design, the elderly is being allocated m groups of specific interest together so that the public would be able to generate one research that are on specific topic which could make it easier for the public to collect these valuable information as the primary resources. Our design revolves around the ideology of integration between retired people with the society.

The idea of having a panopticon tower, where the administration were located was supposed to make the elderly experience a sense of safety- Although in the architectural concept, the panopticon was served to allow watchman to observe the occupants without the occupants know or not that they are being observed.

However, in this master plan it was design as so that the future residents would feel more secure in the society and that the disciplinarian act of all residents are made under control without the need to actually have to provide surveillance or monitors.

&ce Cliet Brief Jaro is an organization providing training and workplace for OKU's around Johor Bahru area specializing m custom-made handicrafts and binding services. JARO is a rehabilitation center and workshop for physically, intellectually and visually challenged.

The proposed site is surrounded by crucial city nodes of Johor Bahru. The idea of creating huge interactions between the clients and the outside surrounding would be most suitable to also create more impact regarding working disabled to community.

The major aim fort his project is to create a centre of a living building to response to sustainable building design and to create a better working experience for workers with disabilities.

UTM lake An artist studio for Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid second semester CLIENT'S DESCRIPTION • Thematic & stylistic approach • Lat style in art : " Subtle, Indirect & Symbolic" • Aware of sensitivities, especially those of race, culture & religion • Age : 67 years old

This studio is an illustration of a 'Daun Upih' inspired by the traditional malay games, 'Tarik Upih' played by the character Anna as seen in one of the episode of Kampung Boy. The core idea of the design is to demonstrate as much as possible the fusion between traditional malay architecture and modern contemporary design.

Considering the client's acoomodation and needs, the space were designed as so that it can help compensate for many of the age-related changes older adults experience.

PROJECT BRIEF This is an advance architectural project with a complex space and form making for personal that requires student to design a building based on specific programs in response to client, space and site requirements. The main objective of this project are to explore integration of client, site and building needs using appropriate methods and process of designing, impart knowledge on how building program influenced design and also the process of creating a finished product - a studio retreat house design.

CLIENT'S BRIEF Clark Joseph Kent is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published

by DC Comics. Kent is commonly seen as brave and kind hearted hero with a strong sense of justice, morality and righteousness.

Kent/Suoperman has come to be seen as an American cultural icon.

Superman is often thought of as the first superhero.

The SOHO designed for Clark Kent/Superman aligns with his title as the "Man of Steel. By this, this project focusses the client and also the public to experience clearly the whole concept of "steel experience" resonating through the exterior and interior of the design as steel and other metal are heavily used in order to radiate and emphasize the concept through the wall system, roof finishing, construction and also, the cladding device.

WAFFLE SLAB is used in order to aid in support for the upper level other than for aesthetic purpose.

by nurul nabila A.A is countries all over the world is racing to build megacities, Malaysia does not falls back behind with its metropolitan city; Kuala Lumpur. At first glance, of course all these on-going developing skyscrapers represents our country's economic growth and stability. A lot of times we believe cities that are dense are more productive, innovative and energy efficient, but sadly this is only to a certain limit. Upon deeper examination, the vast development only reveals deluded fantasy made by the urban economist on the fake idea of Utopia; an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Little do we understand that a quality urban design should see buildings, places, and spaces as part of the whole town or city instead as isolated elements. For example, a building is connected to its street, the street to its neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood to its city Urbanity is more on to the dynamic relationship between the city and the people, where both should be constantly evolving based on the influence of each other.

A city like Kuala Lumpur is just like any

other habitat; wherein exchange, interaction, and the combination and recombination of people and ideas takes place. However issues happens when buildings become so massive that street life disappears. This damp down and limit just any sort of interaction, creating the same isolation that is more commonly associated with sprawl as Jane Jacobs aptly put it: "in the absence of a pedestrian scale, density can be big trouble."

Kuala Lumpur may be at risk of becoming vertical suburbs, whose inhabitants are disconnected and disengaged with each other.

In years to come there will only be more people coming into the city because of the obvious reasons: firstly because it offers better paying jobs and secondly, it is the heart of the economy But we risk ourselves the human aspects of what makes a city a city; the liveability of the city. Liveability requires active participation from the urban inhabitants. I believe that architect needs to design beyond just buildings, as a matter of fact, they should be curating the lifestyle of a community as 'Architecture is a backdrop to life", according to Pritzker Prize-winner; Balkrishna Doshi. Hence in designing urban, the more important question an architect should solve is not "Where do people live?" but instead "How do they live?"

High urban density can be less of a failure if only the opportunity of having social interaction increases. Perhaps the demand of having density increased is an inaccurate solution plan for urban development. What we need is a liveable and interactive density where the community is the key ingredient since economic growth is not

the sole factor of a development. Development is as much dependent on the harmony as it is with economic growth. A strong example could be why silicon valet vs new York. Hence, when we invest and embrace the community centres in our city, things began to changefor the better.

Cultural and community infrastructure such as community centres plays an important role in creating a sense of belonging that brings people together, help to foster friendships and social support networks, and help the communities to develop life skills and resilience. Communities that offer opportunities for human development and the capability to lead worthwhile lives have strong social capital, and act as magnets for investment, growth, and economic development. The idea of sense of belonging is a famous term being used in architectural context but I believe it should be used beyond that.

What I believe in this era is that humanity needs sense of belonging because this is the starting point of human-to-human networks.

We are always trying to find a place to call as our home and along that process, we build connections to another human as much as we fall out from it. The balance between physical and mental fitness can be found by a person within the community.

Strong community engagement allows people to enjoy infinite activities, and helps to establish a deeper level of connection within the community, so that we are able to feel that we are in fact an integral part of the community. I have always felt that the best places to learn and teach are not behind the closed doors of elite skyscrapers. Instead, the best places are always where the people are experiencing subjugation and exclusion

from decision-making freedom and rich opportunities. Realistically, the real world is very harsh to most people. Community is about finding home in each other and a place of comfort. But the idea of a community is also compelling for us all to bring differences to a society that erases our differences. By addressing the existing differences, we confront the question of the social and economic foundations of our society. By building a realistic community, we are patching together the fragmented world. So, if the human scale of any given environment is defined by its community, then the outcome of placemaking wdll produce a human scale city, Placemaking is a human-led process whereby a group of individual human beings with networks to their surrounding built emironment defines the public realm to increase shared values among themselves.

We were bluntly cheated when we used to believe that placemaking relies solely by trends in the real estate market, zoning laws, or large city agencies. From today onwards we need to understand vividly that placemaking is a process instead of an outcome.

So, again, do we need a more compact, walk able higher density communities? Yes. But we certainly do not need to build thousands of look-a-like glass and steel skyscrapers to accomplish the goals of smart growth or sustainable development. What we need are new measures of density that do not simply count how many people we can physically cram into a space but that accounts for how well the space is utilized, the kinds of interactions it facilitates. We are for places.
