Stand Clear. Shock Advised!

THE HISTORY OF THE NURSE BLAKE COMEDY TOUR

In 2018 and 2019, I started doing small shows for about 100-200 people. I had asked followers to vote for their hospital or nursing school, and whoever had the most votes, I would come to their city for a show. I picked the top five places with the highest votes, and all of the shows sold out.

I realized people were actually really interested in seeing a show, so I created ten shows for the Call Light Tour. Each one sold out. Seeing all the nurses coming together to laugh and have a great time was awesome. They would even roll up in party buses!

The first tour was challenging. I planned and managed the first five shows, secured the venues, and dealt with the production side of it too. Luckily, I now have a tour manager who greatly lightens the load. Now I can focus on the actual show instead of worrying about all the other little details and logistics involving a comedy tour.

In 2021-2022, I did the PTO Comedy Tour, a whopping 55 shows! They ALL sold out, so I added 50 more shows for a total of 105 and expanded to Canada, Australia, and Europe. It was amazing to see how nurses worldwide could come together and crack up about the same things.

Over 100,000 nurses from around the world saw The PTO Comedy Tour. It’s really cool to see that no matter where you live or work, we can all come together to laugh and be an amazing nursing community. Some nurses use the show to reunite with old classmates, coworkers, and friends. I love seeing all the camaraderie at every show.

My third tour, Shock Advised, has over 100 shows this year. Since this tour is much bigger than the others, we decided to travel by bus rather than fly. This allows the crew and me to sleep on the bus while we travel at night and then wake up in a new city.

I only have a couple of hours in each city to grab a coffee or get some lunch, but I always try to see a little bit of each place we play in. Traveling around and seeing new states and countries is so much fun, but it is also exhausting and hard on the body. I try to rest and relax as much as possible in between shows.

NURSEBLAKE.COM 8 ISSUE TWO 2023

Of course, I still get nervous before every show! I was never a good public speaker, so going out in front of thousands of people is super nerve-wracking. But I absolutely LOVE the audience, so that puts me at ease. The energy and vibe at the shows are insane. Even though I get nervous, I’m also super excited. And it always helps when I have my nervous PSP—pre-show poop. You can’t have a good nursing shift or comedy show without one! LOL.

Whenever I come to a new venue, the staff there don’t know what to expect—they think it’ll be like a TED talk for nurses. They are always surprised at how loud we get and say that our audience is just as loud and rambunctious as a rock concert! So many people show up in large groups on party buses, ready to have a blast. Nurses are wild! We always break the alcohol sale at every show.

One of my most memorable venues was the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. It was so cool to play in the heart of the LGBTQ+ community of the city. Also, I was the first comedian ever allowed to play at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.

The European tour was so much fun because I allowed myself an extra day in each city to tour around, try the food, and see as many sights as possible. We went to the United Kingdom, Amsterdam, and Ireland. It was epic!

Many people ask me if the jokes and stories I tell in my show are real. They are 100% true life stories. I think that’s why they are so funny because they are real and relatable. I poke fun at

family members, friends, old coworkers, professors, and even audience members. It’s all around a good, hilarious time.

The Shock Advised tour will be closing at the Sydney Opera House. I am sooo excited to perform there! It will be an awesome ending to an amazing tour. There will not be a new comedy tour in 2024 because I plan to focus on the magazine, the NurseCon at Sea cruise, and take some time off to spend with my family and friends.

So hopefully, I will see you at one of the Shock Advised shows or on the cruise to Mexico in April! Thank you all so much for following and supporting me all these years. I am forever grateful.

Love,

NEW GRAD NURSE MUST-HAVES

What are “must-haves” as a new grad nurse to have in our bag and locker? – Elizabeth G.

Hey Elizabeth, welcome to the exciting world of nursing — it's a journey filled with constant learning (seriously!), rewarding experiences, tears, drama, and Flexiseals. For those "must-haves," always keep an extra pair of scrubs handy. If you ever get shit on you at work, they don’t let you go home to change. And trust me. Shit will happen! Just whip out that spare set, and you're good to go. Your locker — that little space — is your sanctuary, so make sure it's well-stocked… with snacks!! Check out Nurse Becky. She doesn’t play with her snacks. If you don’t get the chance to get off the floor for lunch *eye roll*, at least you have a snack you can munch on when hunger strikes.

Oh, and let's not forget the pens! Seriously, you can never have enough of them. But here's a tip — don't get the expensive ones because they will disappear into thin air, or someone will want to “borrow” them, aka steal. So, stock up on good ol' reliable pens that get the job done.

Best of luck, and enjoy every step of your nursing career!

ACCESSIBLE SEATS

I saw your last show in Madison, Wisconsin. I would like to go to the new one, are there accessible seats available? I’m 75 now and don’t walk too well. – Ellen D.

Hi Ellen! It's so awesome to hear that you caught my PTO Tour show in Madison, Wisconsin. I hope you had a blast! I know I did!

First, thank you for sharing that you might need some assistance. I totally understand, and the venue will have your back in making sure you have a comfortable expe-

rience. To get all the details and ensure everything is set up just right for you, I recommend reaching out to the venue directly. Give them a call or shoot them an email to discuss your specific needs. They will have all the information about accessible seating options and any other accommodations that might be available.

Your support means the world to me. I’d love to see ya again!

NURSING HISTORY

Can you tell us a little about your nursing history? You have mentioned that you have worked in the ICU and ER. Is there anywhere else? – Kathy F.

Absolutely, Kathy! My journey in healthcare actually began when I was 17 years old, working as a patient transporter. It was such a fun experience, and I truly had a blast. That's where my passion for healthcare started to grow.

During my time in nursing school, I worked in the OR, where I helped with prepping and cleaning up the operating rooms. It was great to be in such a crucial environment, supporting the surgical team behind the scenes.

As a patient care tech on the night shift in the neuro ICU, I learned a great deal about critical care. These patients’ needs were super challenging! I learned the importance of teamwork and effective communication, not just with colleagues but also with patients and their families.

Once I became a nurse, I was lucky enough to work in various units. I spent time in the pulmonary care unit and liver transplant ICU. Then, I took on the role of an injury prevention coordinator in the ER and care coordinator on a trauma floor, where I helped support patients and their families during their recovery journey. It was an amazing and rewarding experience.

If you know me, you know I don’t stay put! I ended up working at several hospitals across the country. I got to view nursing from different perspectives and broaden my understanding of the profession. Each role has contribut-

ed to my growth as a nurse. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m super grateful for every experience along the way.

LEAVING THE FLOOR

What made you leave working the floor full-time? – Ragan H. Ah, Ragan! As you probably already know, nursing brought me some amazing opportunities outside of the bedside. I’m talking about my comedy tour, NurseCon at Sea, NurseCon, and now this awesome magazine.

With these exciting ventures taking up a good chunk of my time, it became challenging to work on the floor. Besides, no manager would ever give me the amount of PTO I would need to accommodate my commitments. LOL!

But I do miss the bedside. It’s a foundation that made my nursing game strong and keeps me fired up about nursing.

Cruise Ship Nursing

A UNIQUE CAREER PATH FOR ADVENTURESEEKING NURSES

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A CRUISE SHIP NURSE

Zahra Rahim, an experienced cruise ship nurse from West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, started her nursing career in the emergency department. She began working as a new grad nurse in January 2020. Within a few months, nursing changed drastically worldwide, and Zahra was thrown smackdab in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it was difficult, she gained a lot of essential emergency medicine experience.

ONE OF THE MANY PERKS of being a nurse is versatility. There are so many different areas that nurses can choose to specialize in. Even better is that nurses aren’t stuck doing the same job day after day for their entire careers. Nurses can change the setting they work in, the patient population they care for, and where they reside in the world.

If you are a nurse who loves to travel, see the world, and seek out new adventures, cruise ship nursing may be the perfect career for you. Not only do you get to experience living aboard a cruise ship, but you also get paid to travel, so why limit yourself to providing nursing care on dry land when you can take your skills to the high seas?

As the world started to open back up, a new nursing opportunity arose when someone reached out to Zahra regarding cruise ship nursing. Because she loves to travel, Zahra decided to take the leap and make a career change. Her background in accidents and emergencies (A&E nursing) made her a perfect candidate.

Zahra is now contracted as a nursing officer with a cruise line based out of the United Kingdom and works on a rotation of twelve weeks on and six weeks off. The small medical team consists of several doctors and nurses working in the clinic onboard the ship. Not only do they tend to the medical needs of thousands of guests, but they also care for the staff aboard.

The facility is set up similarly to a hospital setting and has everything the team needs to triage and treat patients. “If anything is to happen like a cardiac arrest or any limb-threatening injuries, we

have all the facilities onboard to manage it until we can safely get them offboard,” said Zahra. As a cruise ship nurse, she must be prepared for a wide range of possible situations with a varying patient population.

Each cruise line will vary in how they manage the nursing contracts and schedules. Zahra’s work schedule generally involves two days in the clinic, a day on-call, a night on-call, and then a day of rest. On clinic days, she works from 8AM to 10AM and then from 4PM to 6PM. So the time in between can be spent exploring the ports or relaxing on the ship.

“On a cruise ship, the workload isn’t as intense as the emergency room, but you may see sick patients and need the knowledge to recognize when something is wrong. But, at least you can spend time with the patient and explain what’s happening. You don’t always get to do that in the high-pressure hospital setting," added Zahra.

Being a social person is an important aspect of this type of nursing. You will encounter many different guests and staff members throughout your day. Zahra explained some of the required skills to do this job. “A cruise ship nurse should be confident doing initial assessments and be able to triage, understand basic interpretations of ECGs (electrocardiograms), and know advanced life support.”

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A CRUISE SHIP NURSE?

Many cruise lines require nurses to have at least three years of clinical experience, preferably in emergency services or intensive care. While some

days may be slow and considered easy, the staff must be prepared to jump into action for many different life-threatening situations.

Cruise ships have thousands of guests of all ages, so the medical staff should be comfortable caring for patients from babies to the elderly. Due to the requirements of experience, nursing skills, and the need to work autonomously, the salary of cruise ship nurses is comparable to hospital pay ranges.

“You have to work well under pressure and will be faced with challenges that you may not ever deal with at home. You may have to work outside of your comfort zone and need to know how to cope with stressful situations,” stated Zahra. Cruise ship nurses should expect the unexpected and maintain day-to-day flexibility.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING A CRUISE SHIP NURSE

So many nurses take their nursing skills on the road as travelers, so why not take those skills onboard a beautiful cruise ship? Imagine waking up in a new port every day and getting to experience different cultures, languages, and cuisine. It’s not all work for the cruise ship nurses. They also get to go on excursions and tours or attend the shows and entertainment onboard.

Some of the perks of being a cruise nurse are getting discounts on excursions, tours, and other cruises. Many companies will allow

their nurses to bring a family member or friend onboard. Cruise nurses are considered officers, so they have deck privileges, allowing them to mingle with the guests and enjoy the amenities and restaurants onboard.

Cruise ships are a fun and relaxing environment, quite the contrast from most nursing settings. “Sometimes we forget we’re there to work. We get to see so many beautiful places, so it feels like a holiday, but we are ultimately there to make sure the guests are safe and having a good time,” noted Zahra. But during her time off, she definitely takes advantage of exploring the different ports and enjoys the activities on the ship.

When asked why she continues to be a cruise ship nurse, Zahra replied, “I’m passionate about travel. I love taking nursing to different levels. I’m making myself a better practitioner by taking on new challenges, and I’m broadening my horizons. It’s a nice way to have a change of scenery.”

This unique nursing career allows you to explore new countries while still being able to interact and provide care to patients. Being a cruise ship nurse offers an exciting opportunity to combine your passion for nursing with your love of travel. Getting a paycheck for working and living on a cruise ship sounds like unparalleled job satisfaction!

A CRUISE LIKE NO OTHER

FREEDOM OF THE SEAS

2023 WAS A BUSY YEAR for NurseCon at Sea with TWO Ultimate Nursing Conferences! The first sailing in February went to the Dominican Republic. One month later, nurses and guests hopped aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas ship and enjoyed a four-day trip from Miami to The Bahamas.

I had the incredible opportunity to experience the Bahamas cruise firsthand. I must say, I felt pretty spoiled for my first cruise experience — no kids running around, shows and entertainment designed for nurses, and no typical stresses that arise from a family vacation. It's not like any other cruising experience out there. Nurses are a unique breed, and it's so fun to hang out with a bunch of people in your cohort.

Many of the guests were repeat sailors, and it’s easy to understand why. Where else can you acquire continuing nursing education (CNE) credits while combining an unforgettable vacation on a funfilled cruise with like-minded colleagues?

There are numerous insightful CNE courses to choose from and endless activities, parties, and shows, all with a backdrop of the beautiful blue-green water of the Atlantic Ocean. Hop off the ship for an adventurous excursion or simply lounge on the beach all day. Make the most of your well-deserved getaway while enriching your nursing career in the most unforgettable way possible!

THE MEETUPS

Are you traveling alone? No worries. The first day includes unmissable meetups. Join other nurses and healthcare professionals from all over the world who work in your specialty and create long-lasting connections. Students, veterans, LGBTQ+, educators, BIPOC, and even family and friends have their own meetups.

Amanda Walker, a neonatal intensive care nurse (NICU) in Peoria, Illinois, said, “I loved attending the NICU meetup and having the opportunity to talk to other NICU RNs from all over the country.” Over fifty NICU nurses attended the meetup at the Schooner Bar.

“It’s also nice to meet NICU-specific nurses because our jobs are so different from other areas of the hospital, so they know the specific struggles we go through. It gave me a chance to meet people I could hang out with the rest of the week,” added Amanda.

And it’s not just about the education credits. “NurseCon at Sea was such a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the perfect mix between fun and education. There was so much to do on the ship, so it was almost hard to fit in everything that I wanted to do! It was really cool to see Nurse Blake out and about on the ship. He was so nice and approachable,” Amanda stated.

THEME NIGHTS

Do you enjoy adding a little dress-up and flare to your wardrobe? Theme nights are a fantastic way to vamp up any party — and the parties onboard NurseCon at Sea are beyond epic! Even if you don’t enjoy partaking in the theme nights, seeing Nurse Blake and everyone else all decked out is super fun.

Guests sported their 1920s attire and accessories for the Great Gatsby Party. Flapper dresses, fedora hats, long gloves, and sequences were some of the fun ways cruisers embellished their wardrobe. To kick off the party, Nurse Blake and his dance crew put on an amazing show in the Royal Promenade, followed by a dazzling balloon drop.

Are you all about dressing down and getting cozy? Nothing screams cozy and carefree like partying in your favorite pajamas. Late-night music, dancing, and drinking at the pajama pool party were the perfect ending to day three.

There was a dazzling ‘Glow Me Away’ costume contest and a glow party on the pool deck. Guests put on their brightest neon colors, glow sticks, flashing lights, and even tutus. It was a luminous theme night finale!

NURSES GOT TALENT

We all know that nurses are nothing short of amazing! Some of them are blessed with unbelievable gifts and weren’t holding back at the talent show. The singing, dancing, and guitar-playing

nurses took to the stage in the ultimate battle to be number one. Although each performance was astounding, one nurse touched the hearts of the audience with her stellar performance, singing “Hopelessly Devoted to You” by Olivia Newton-John. Lee Millward, a nurse from Australia, sang her heart out and ultimately took home the enormous winning trophy.

Lee has been a singer for many years and used to sing in clubs around Sydney. Nowadays, she serenades the residents in the nursing home where she works. “I’m absolutely amazed that I won. It’s unbelievable. The crowd was just amazing,” recalled Lee. Singing is her passion, and she definitely deserved the win.

NURSE FEUD

We all know the age-old playful feud between day shift and night shift. Let’s face it, night shift always has the best potlucks! So imagine a room full of nurses, a stage step up just like a game show, and two teams of day shifters versus night shifters showing off their knowledge of the nursing world.

The enthusiasm was palpable and the crowd was at the edge of their seats. The audience was shouting, laughing, and even booing. Not everyone agreed on the correct answers, which made the crowd boom. It was pure chaotic fun, and night shift ultimately triumphed!

Some of the winners laughed about how frustrating it could be to know the answer but not be able to spit it out, referring to it as “a total brain fart!” They appreciated the audience yelling out answers to them when they drew blanks. Although it was “nerve-wracking” for them, they had a blast!

THE CNE COURSES

The Bahamas cruise offered 35 different CNE courses to choose from. Some examples included the Code Sepsis Escape Room and Recognizing Suicide Risk in Nursing. Experts in the field teach each course.

Dr. Luna Hodges, DNP, RN, and Christine Young, BSN, RN, taught the Transgender Health in the Pediatric Population course. It was their first time presenting at NurseCon at Sea, and they couldn't have been happier with the experience. They, too, were able to connect with so many like-minded colleagues while also enjoying an amazing cruise experience.

“It’s a fun environment. It’s all nurses and their plus ones. We’re here to work towards the same goals – to be better healthcare providers, but we also get to learn while on vacation,” said Christine. Many of the courses are also interesting for non-nursing cruisers.

“I love the question and answers. There are some really good questions that people have, and I end up learning from others while I’m here,” commented Luna. The Q&As allow for audience engagement and thoughtful discussions.

What’s unique about this nursing conference is that you get to pick and choose which courses to attend, and learning is not obligatory, so if you’d rather spend your time at the pool, you can certainly skip the courses. But, we highly recommend cruisers partake in the CNEs. There are so many interesting and informative topics offered.

THE DRAG QUEENS

The oh-so-fabulous drag queens Miz Cracker, Ginger Minj, and Kerri Colby delighted guests with their witty humor, beautiful personalities, and elaborate wardrobes. The lovely ladies, along with Scott Nichol, singer and entertainment specialist, performed a phenomenal show!

Miz Cracker, from New York City, has been performing drag for 12 years. She has competed in RuPaul’s Drag Race, tours worldwide, and has the comedy special “Here I Stand.” She has written for publications like GQ and has lectured at universities. When asked why she enjoys doing drag, Miz Cracker stated, “I love making people happy. I always say people should attend a drag show because it gives them a break from the grind of life, and then they can rejuvenate themselves and do what they have to do tomorrow. Drag is like self-care.”

For all of those “Hocus Pocus” fans out there, you may have recognized Ginger Minj, who had a cameo in the recent “Hocus Pocus 2” movie. She even performed alongside Jennifer Aniston in the movie “Dumplin’.” From Orlando, Florida, Ginger has been performing drag for over 20 years. She too competed in RuPaul’s Drag Race. In 2016, she released the album “Sweet T” and has an exciting new book called “Southern Fried Sass.”

Ginger had a blast hosting bingo and performing onstage for a cruise ship full of nurses. She stated, “The nurses get turned up — harder than any drag club I’ve ever worked at. It’s been so much fun, and everyone has been so nice.” Ginger added, “Drag is one way we can dress up our problems, put them out there for everyone to see, and then have a deep, meaningful conversation about fixing the world.”

The glamorous, sparkling goddess Kerri Colby wowed the audience with her rockin’ body and sheer, sequined gown. Performing since 2019, Kerri lives in Los Angeles, California, and is an inspiring multicultural trans actress, model, and performer.

When it comes to NurseCon at Sea, Kerri said, “I love all audiences, but it’s so fun to give an escape for nurses who work so hard. I am so appreciative of the opportunity to perform on NurseCon at Sea, and not only to have drag representation but also trans representation and to feel included. I have felt so welcomed on this cruise.”

THE EXCURSIONS

It’s not uncommon for cruisers to start their vacay as soon as they arrive in Miami. Between the beautiful beaches, phenomenal Cuban fare, and exciting nightlife, there’s plenty to experience before boarding the ship.

The cruise made two stops in The Bahamas — Coco Cay and Nassau. Both destinations boast white, sandy beaches, crystal blue-green water, and plenty of thirst-quenching cocktails adorned with fruit and mini umbrellas.

If you enjoy adventure, sign up for a Jeep tour, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, ziplining, water park admission, etc. Nassau has the infamous straw market for anyone looking to buy souvenirs and handmade Bahamian goods.

NURSECON AT SEA RECAP

A COLLABORATION inComfort

I’M BEYOND EXCITED to share the inside scoop on my incredible collaboration with Gales for my new line of nursing shoes.

One question I’ve been asked a million times is, “What are the most comfortable shoes for nurses?” For the longest time, I didn’t have an answer. To be honest, I had always just worn whatever sneakers were handy. Around 2018-2019, many nursing shoe companies that were popping up wanted to collaborate with me. But none of their shoes truly stood out or provided the support and endurance I know we, as nurses, were looking for. That’s when Gales, a company focused on nursing shoes, approached me. I was skeptical at first.

Let me tell you, I was blown away the moment I tried on the prototypes of Gales’ shoes. They were insanely comfortable, and I knew I wanted to help make them even better.

And now, after months of working closely with the amazing team at Gales, I’m excited to announce that we’ve created something truly revolutionary. We fine-tuned every aspect of the shoe, from the colors and design to the overall aesthetics. It was a creative process that had me feeling excited.

What sets Gales apart is their dedication to research and evidence-based design. Trust me, they’ve done their homework! Most shoes are designed for walking, running, or playing sports, but we needed shoes that could handle the unique demands of standing for long shifts. And Gales nailed it. These shoes are specifically crafted for us nurses, who spend hours on our feet.

Let’s talk about the features that make these shoes so amazing. First off, they’re super easy to clean. We all know how messy our work can get, and having wipeable shoes that stay clean is a must. No more worrying about bringing home bacteria and nasty odors! Plus, since they don’t have laces, say goodbye to uncomfortable knots digging into your feet or your laces coming untied just when you’re elbow-deep in shit.

Another amazing aspect of the Gales Proline shoes is their versatility. Narrow feet? Wide feet? They accommodate you perfectly. As someone with wider feet, I’ve struggled to find nursing-specific shoes that fit comfortably. But Gales got it right.

They’ve also incorporated airflow, allowing your feet to breathe even during the busiest shifts. Oh, and did I mention that they’re eco-friendly too? You’ll be stepping into comfort while doing your part for the environment.

My vision was to make shoes that are comfortable and cute. And Gales gave me complete freedom to choose the colors and design. We ended up with two fantastic options: teal with pink accents and black with pink details. They’re fashionable, functional, and just plain fun!

“Gales nailed it. These shoes are specifically crafted for us nurses, who spend hours on our feet.”

The response from nurses who have tried our shoes has been phenomenal. One nurse, Amber Martz (@sparklyscrubs), absolutely loved them. She raved, “Nurse Blake’s new shoes are as fashionable as they are comfortable! I love the [teal] and pink details (especially since I work in birth services!), and the arch support carried me through many busy shifts. It’s always so awesome when footwear designed for nurses has an actual nurse working on them! You can really tell these shoes are made to be worn by healthcare workers.”

Now, for the other best part! Our collaboration with Gales is just the beginning. We have exciting plans for the future. I can’t spill all the beans just yet, but trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed.

We’re committed to making a positive impact, which is why we’ve chosen the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the recipient of a portion of the shoe proceeds. Giving back to the community is something close to my heart, especially when it involves making critically ill children’s wishes come true. When you wear these shoes, you make a difference with every step you take.

TIPS for Back-to-Nursing-School SUCCESS

YOU ARE JUST ABOUT TO LAUNCH into a new semester of nursing school, so let’s set you up for success! These tips will help you with time management, effective studying, and self-care so that you can make the most of your nursing experience.

1. BUY THE CALENDAR AND THE CUTE DUE-DATE STICKERS!

Put your assignments, due dates, project milestones, lab/clinical days, and times in a calendar as soon as possible. This is the most important organizational task you can do before getting the semester started. Research states that just ten minutes of planning can save you two hours a day!

You do not need a fancy, expensive calendar. I purchased mine from Target, along with some cute little stickers that made me excited to decorate and get organized.

2. STUDY FOR EXAMS ON DAY ONE

The worst thing you could do to your sanity in nursing school is to save your studying for the week before the exam. Do not wait. You will want to fully absorb this information because all these individual pieces will come together to create the whole picture of healthcare!

The worst thing you could do to your sanity in nursing school is to save your studying for the week before the exam. Do not wait.

I like to tell my students to tackle two to three chapters a week for exam prep. Study those chapters and build on them with more chapters in the following weeks. By your exam date, you will have refreshed these topics multiple times. Repetition is key.

3. PRACTICE THE POMODORO METHOD

The Pomodoro technique is an effective time management system. It suggests working in shorter, focused, 25-minute intervals and then taking a five-minute break. After four 25-minute intervals, take a more extended break. I used this method when studying during nursing school and the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX), and it helped me so much! Check out the app Flora - Green Focus. It can help you track habits and challenges you to put your phone down so you can be productive, all while helping to plant trees!

Instead, try going back to the root of the problem or medical condition. Ask yourself:

1. What normally happens in the body related to this medical condition?

2. What changes in the body when a patient experiences this medical condition?

3. How does it present to us, the outsider?

4. How do we treat it?

BOOM. You have just learned everything you need to know about a topic by understanding instead of memorizing.

Available for purchase at RNExplained on Etsy.

4. PRACTICE SELF-CARE

The secret to succeeding at nursing school isn’t non-stop studying or perfect grades. It’s about balance. If you can devote the necessary time to your career pursuits while also taking care of yourself and doing the things important to you, you’ve already succeeded in nursing school.

• DON’T SKIP MEALS. Truth is, not eating enough — or eating poorly — can contribute to low energy levels. Get regular, nutritious meals to stay sharp during your studies.

• LIMIT YOUR CAFFEINE. I know it sounds crazy to say this, but too much caffeine can contribute to poor sleep. Instead, try sipping on decaffeinated tea, water, or fruit juice or taking a quick walk outside!

• BE ACTIVE. It can be as simple as walking the dog or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

• GET MORE SLEEP. Even if that means going to bed 10 minutes earlier than usual, those extra minutes can make a big difference in how rested you feel the next day.

5. STUDY TO UNDERSTAND, NOT TO MEMORIZE

When we are thrown endless amounts of side effects and contraindications to learn, the first instinct is to pull out the flashcards and memorize word-for-word. This is ineffective. It’s important to understand why we do what we do or carry out certain interventions as the nurse.

Dr. Annette

M. Guy

OF THE QUARTER

AFTER WORKING FOR OVER 20 YEARS in business management, Dr. Annette M. Guy, DNP, MSN-NE, RN, from Asheville, North Carolina, made a midlife career change that led her down a path she never expected to take. From certified nursing assistant (CNA) to college dean, author, and business owner – Annette proves the sky’s the limit for anyone looking to change things up and advance their career.

As a child, Annette was inspired by her grandmother, who was a nurse. She would proudly put on her Nana’s nursing cap while tending to the needs of her ‘patients’…her baby dolls. Annette has always loved caring for others, so it’s no surprise that her career in business management wasn’t quite as fulfilling as she hoped it would be.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE FOR A CAREER CHANGE

Annette decided to test the waters of the nursing world in her forties and became a CNA. She quickly realized that becoming a nurse was her new goal in life. After graduating from nursing school, Annette worked in the intensive care unit (ICU) and did some travel nursing. “I absolutely loved being a bedside nurse and caring for patients, and I always enjoyed teaching students and new nurses,” recalled Annette.

Annette is passionate about creating a kind and supportive nursing culture. Her experience in nursing school witnessing classmates being bullied by instructors and how she was also a victim of bullying as a new grad fostered her devotion to changing the nursing culture. “We should never eat our young. Nursing students and new nurses should feel safe to ask questions and approach other nurses,” Annette emphasized.

CHOOSING HIGHER EDUCATION

“I loved being a preceptor and was always eager to have a student with me,” said Annette. Because she was so thorough and enthusiastic with the nursing students, one of the nursing school clinical instructors asked her if she had ever considered being a clinical adjunct. Annette decided to try it out and absolutely loved it!

Before she knew it, Annette was on her way to getting a master’s degree in nursing education. While completing her higher education, she worked as a clinical instructor at a community college. Although she was gaining a wealth of experience in her position, the program itself was struggling, and the culture was not quite what Annette expected it would be. Many of the instructors, including the director, left their positions.

After all the pitfalls and struggles at the community college, Annette decided that teaching may not be her true path. She planned to finish the semester and then quit her teaching position. “I was heartbroken, and the students begged me to stay,” she said. It was difficult for her, but Annette wrote her resignation letter and planned to return to bedside nursing.

HOW NURSE BLAKE CHANGED EVERYTHING

In December 2019, Annette received a call informing her that she had been nominated by many of her students and peers for the 2019 Nurse Blake Awards as Professor of the Year. A few weeks later, the votes were cast, and Annette won! She recalled the moment she found out:

“I will never forget that day. On January 6th, I got a phone call from Nurse Blake. He said that I had been named the Professor of the Year and that my students had written some of the most amazing letters saying that I’ve changed the culture of nursing education and made such a huge impression on them. Blake’s phone call and winning that award changed the direction of my career. Right then, I decided not to give up on my students and being an educator. I actually had my resignation [letter] on my desk and was ready to hand it in that day!”

NEW OPPORTUNITIES AROSE

After winning the award, Annette got a call from another college interested in hiring her. The college had been struggling with its National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rates. Annette had previous experience writing NCLEX questions as she had contributed to Loretta Manning’s book, “NCLEX-RN 101: How to Pass!”

Annette accepted the new position as Director of Nursing Development and Assessment and helped turn the college around. “I worked very hard, and for the first time, the college had five graduating classes in a row with a 100% NCLEX pass rate,” declared Annette. She went on to graduate in May 2023 with her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Educational Leadership. Annette is now the Dean of Nursing at Spartanburg Community College in South Carolina. She has already achieved many goals in the short months she has been in the position, and we can only expect wonderful things to come for the college.

Annette’s core value for nursing education is to create a culture that strives to support and understand students and new nurses. “I don’t ever want to be disconnected from my students. I love doing events with them, like ‘Donuts with the Dean,’ to get their input on what they’d like to see the program be. My purpose is to help the students and change the culture of nursing. We should never eat our young.”

One of her students said it best when they nominated her for Professor of the Year: “With the resignation of all other nursing professors and the director, Professor Guy was the last one standing at our school. She refused to leave our second-year class and withstood the pressure of so many obstacles. She missed out on a lot of time with her family and stood tall in front of our class, alone, every lecture, every exam, and answered every single email every day. She is a warrior and a perfect example of what a nurse should be in the face of adversity.”

EDUCATOR, AUTHOR, AND ENTREPRENEUR

Annette has two other business ventures in the works. She is publishing a book for nursing educators that discusses nursing culture and how to encourage students and build positive and supportive relationships with them. “If we can change the culture of nursing education, eventually we will change the culture of nursing practice,” she said.

Annette and her friend, a family nurse practitioner, plan to open a new clinical spa, Studio J, near the end of September in Waynesville, NC. They will provide hydration therapy, botox, laser hair removal, CoolSculpting, and more. Annette loves working in education but longs for face-to-face patient care and looks forward to this new opportunity. “I will get to take care of people in my community, which is something I really miss.”

Annette’s selection as Nurse of the Quarter comes as no surprise. Her passion for education and changing the culture of nursing is evident in all the great successes she has accomplished and the goals she continues to work towards. Not one to settle, Annette followed her dream, became a nurse in her forties, and didn’t stop there. Now with the prestigious title of DNP behind her name, she is the dean of nursing, an author, and an entrepreneur. She is truly an inspiration for nurses, students, and all the educators leading the next generation of extraordinary caregivers.

OFF THE CLOCK : NURSE LESLINE

In the fast-paced world of nursing, finding balance and taking care of oneself can be challenging. However, Lesline, a nurse passionate about wellness, has found the perfect blend by combining her nursing career with her side business as a yoga instructor, where she’s making a significant impact in the lives of busy moms.

FROM NURSING TO NAMASTE

LESLINE’S JOURNEY BEGAN in 2009 when she started practicing Bikram Yoga. As a nurse, she witnessed the stress of her profession, and yoga became her sanctuary. Recognizing the importance of self-care, she seized the opportunity to become a certified yoga teacher when she was awarded a scholarship in 2020. It was a life-changing moment that solidified her passion for yoga and inspired her to share its transformative power with others.

INSPIRING BUSY MOMS

As a mother to two little ones, she knows firsthand the challenges that mothers face. Speaking about her journey, Lesline shared, “After the birth of my daughter in December 2019, I faced significant mental health challenges. It was a tough time, and I felt ashamed because, as a nurse, I thought I shouldn’t be experiencing these emotions. But I knew I needed help, so I reached out to a therapist.”

Through therapy and life coaching, Lesline discovered the power of self-care and mindfulness. She realized that other moms might be facing similar struggles and might not necessarily be diagnosed with postpartum depression. Motivated by her own experiences, she founded Lesline Does Wellness to support moms in their mental and physical well-being.

YOGA AS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

For Lesline, yoga is not just about physical exercise but also about mental well-being. Through yoga, she discovered the power of mindfulness. She emphasized, “Yoga has been my go-to when I’m not feeling my best mentally. It’s a powerful tool for managing stress and practicing mindfulness.”

This practice has allowed her to be more present, catch negative thoughts, and respond thoughtfully to challenges. With a focus on self-compassion and grace, Lesline empowers moms to navigate the beautiful yet complex journey of motherhood with calm and inner strength.

starting a side business is a must. If it’s solely for the money, burnout will quickly follow. Take the time to define your purpose and consider who you’re serving.”

BLENDING NURSING WITH YOGA

Lesline has found the perfect way to merge her nursing background with her passion for yoga. Drawing upon her knowledge of anatomy and physiology, she incorporates a scientific approach into her yoga classes. She brings awareness to the power of breathing, how it affects the nervous system, and how it can help regulate emotions.

Additionally, having seen patients with conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure during her nursing career, Lesline highlights how yoga can complement medical care.

BALANCING BOTH WORLDS

Juggling her business as a yoga instructor alongside her nursing job is no easy feat. Still, Lesline manages it with the help of her supportive husband and by prioritizing her time effectively. She shared, “I’m a morning person, so I dedicate my mornings to my nursing job. In the afternoons, I dedicate my energy to Lesline Does Wellness.”

When asked about advice for nurses wanting to start their own side gigs, Lesline emphasized the importance of defining one’s “why.” She said, “It might sound cliché, but knowing why you’re

When management wants to keep you for another shift, I mean, I wouldn't leave with that thing out there!!

Why does this kinda look like a stool sample???

Oh, hell no! Where’s the flamethrower?!?!

It looks like a snake with legs! No thanks.

Now this one’s kinda cute.

Nurses Strike Back Yes, Please!

NURSING NEWS BLAKE'S TAKE

GETTING REAL ABOUT NURSING SHORTAGE AND STAFFING RATIOS

Alright, here’s the lowdown! And no, I’m not talking about that time someone microwaved fish in the breakroom (you know who you are). I’m talking about the heavy stuff, some serious shit: nursing shortage and staffing ratio.

Unless you’re a nurse manager always in meetings (what the hell are they doing in those meetings anyway?), you’ve heard all about it. Any bedside nurse in the U.S. can attest that nursing shortage and staffing ratios are HUGE issues!

But why is it happening? Ok, we can’t keep blaming COVID. The pandemic certainly hasn’t helped matters, but let’s move on. We, as nurses, have been dealing with work challenges for years. We’re feeling the pressure, and it’s seriously pushing us to our limits.

THE BADASSERY OF NURSES FIGHTING BACK

Enter strikes! Did you see how badass nurses have been organizing and fighting back like never before?

We’re joining unions, standing up for our rights, and advocating against labor rights violations. And, let me tell you, there’s power in numbers. When we come together and raise our voices, we can make some serious noise!

I’m talking picket signs, bullhorns, dancing, and a whole lot of determination. Strikes, my friends, are what we do when all else fails, and they pack a powerful punch, especially for us nurses! They make waves in our beloved healthcare system and spotlight how unfairly we are treated.

But not so fast! If you’re not part of a union and thinking about going all ‘strike mode,’ just tread lightly. Here’s the thing: Union members have an advantage when it comes to striking. They have extra perks and backup that non-union nurses don’t have — just putting it out there!

When nurses vote to go on strike, it sends a powerful message to hospital systems and executives. It tells them we’re not messing around, and we demand respect and fair treatment!

MEET THE STRIKERS MAKING NOISE

Check out some recent strikes that shook things up!

Taking On the Big Apple

First is the epic New York Nurse Strike. Nurses from Mount Sinai Health, Montefiore Health System, and Wyckoff Hospital hit the streets in January 2023, picket signs held high, making their voices heard far and wide. The strike went on for three days and really sparked some interesting discussions. People couldn’t help but notice!

The New York Times explained, “...many nurses on the picket line this week said their main priority was improving working conditions by adding nurses to short-staffed hospital floors where they said crowded conditions had put patients at risk and led to stress and burnout among staff. That also became the priority of the union in the negotiations.” I’m nodding so hard my head might fall off — yes, please!

Since then, the nursing world has been hit with some jaw-dropping truths that have really turned heads! Did it have to get to that point?

Hell no! But, come on, we’ve been raising red flags for years.

A One-day Strike That Made Waves

Next up was a one-day strike at John Muir Behavioral Health Center in Concord, California. It may have been short, but the message was loud and clear — a call for change and improvement in nurses’ work environment.

Get this! According to KRON4, “[The strikers] say that many nurses are leaving due to pay, benefits, and safety concerns. They also want officials to improve patient safety and offer stronger staffing measures and better training for nurses in the specialty units.” Yep, it’s everywhere!

The Lone Star’s Historic Showdown

Then, in June 2023, a 24-hour-long historic strike took place at Ascension Seton in Austin, Texas. It made history as the largest strike ever seen in the Lone Star State. Nurses walked out and rallied together, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the cause.

“Seventy-two percent of the 900-person nursing staff voted to form a union last fall. National Nurses United began its first contract negotiations with Ascension in November. Now, the union says it has reached an impasse with hospital management over priorities related to hiring and retention. A top concern for the union is lower guaranteed nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. Nurses at the hospital say they are assigned too many patients at a time, causing nurses to

QUICK FACTS

> Nurses nationwide are joining unions, amplifying their voices for better working conditions and strength in numbers.

> Strikes highlight the need for improved staffing ratios and patient safety measures.

> Nurses don’t abandon patients. Strikes are carefully planned, and unions give hospitals ample notice to find appropriate staffing solutions.

burn out and patients to receive a lower standard of care,” reported The Texas Tribune. Hospital management at its best! SMH!

A Bold Week-long Statement

Not to be outdone, Providence (or better yet “Profitdence”) Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, saw over 1,800 nurses and home health workers walk out for an entire week. It was a bold statement, demanding better conditions for both nurses and their patients.

According to KATU News, “The Oregon Nurses Association said that after a week of ‘unwillingness from Providence to return to the bargaining table,’ the nursing staff at Providence Portland, Providence Home Health & Hospice, and Providence Seaside will be on the picket lines starting Monday.” And they did just that!

Facilities That Dodged Strikes

While several other healthcare facilities authorized strikes in 2023, agreements were reached before the strikes could unfold. These included PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, MarinHealth Medical Center in Greenbrae, and McLaren Lapeer Region in Lapeer, Michigan.

TAKING RISKS, FIGHTING FOR FAIRNESS!

Of course, going on strike is not only challenging, but it’s a tough decision for us to make as nurses. I mean, we’re taking risks like potentially losing out on pay and not taking care of our patients. And what’s a bummer is that sometimes the public gets the wrong idea about nurses going on strike. Let’s set the record straight: Going on strike doesn’t mean we just up and leave our patients. That’s what hospital executives want the public to believe, but that’s not true! The reality is that nurses and unions give hospitals plenty of time to negotiate and come to a fair deal before even considering a strike. This gives hospitals the chance to figure out their staffing situation in case a strike does happen.

The public assumes we’re well-paid, so what the hell are we complaining about? If only they knew the real deal! If only they understood what it’s like to be overworked day in and day out while trying to care for really sick patients!

Anyway, the strikes and unionizing show that more and more nurses are willing to take on these challenges to fight for what’s right. It’s an awesome reminder that we are not just caregivers — we are advocates for our own well-being and the well-being of our patients. We are the backbone of the healthcare system, we refuse to stay silent, and we demand safer and better conditions!

Together, strike by strike, we will make our voices heard, challenge the status quo, and make the future of our profession stronger and better. And that’s something we can all get behind!
