1. Project Overview When I had to decide my final project theme I tried to choose between different styles related to audiovisual media. I didn't want to do a current project like a documentary, a reporter or a short, I preferred a project more ambitious, something based on animation and not too much seen before. It could be more motivating for me. I started to be interested in video projection performances. Mapping. It’s a new technique that can transform a simplistic building to a spectacular construction, only using some projectors, computer and a creative mind. There are a lot of mappings, but sometimes a big part of them are mappings without a plot or a story to explain, only there are effects related to the music or to the model. For this reason, I preferred to have a storyline to create the effects and animations, and later, record the mapping to make the possibility to share it with a video. Trying to decide the plot, I was thinking about to choose a children's story, something for the theme, but with an adult and more fashionable viewpoint, something not previously seen. This is the reason that I chose the Saint George legend. It is very know as at Catalunya as in the United Kingdom, but it would the first time that we explain the story using this technique. It daring to make a mapping project by first time and without too much knowledge’s of the technique, but it is probably the reason that motivates me to do it. What is certain is that the motivation is not everything to have a successful result.

2. Project Aim It is an ambitious project because the most of the techniques or software are new for me, so the objective I hope to complete are the following ones: 1. Explain Saint George’s legend using animations 2D and 3D, and different effects. I pretend to make it unusual and distinctive, but at the same time I want to follow this story line to make it understandable both young people and a adult public. 2. Create original set as a base for the projection. It have to represents the main elements of the legend… Over this scene I’ll project the images and characters of the story, for this, I need to design a landscape apt to represent all the acts with the correct size, depth and perspective. 3. One of the most important parts is the learning and the research about mapping. It’s important to remark that it’s my first contact with mapping, because of that I need a time to learn the theoretical and practical part. 4. Experiment with the content. Create different effects and animations to explain the story. At the same time, get defined characters, recognizable easily. Play with the lights and sounds to make senses to the viewer and attract the attention of them. 5. Record the projection over the scene and create a video with different planes to transmit a linear story following the actions projected over the set. I pretend to obtain a video film editing the different sequences I will record and as a result make a video apt to share.

3. Project Description 3.1.

Project Outline The creative process of a Mapping it’s large, for this reason we have to structure it by three main steps, like all the other audiovisual media products: Figure 1: Main steps

Main phases of the project Preproduction

Production

Postproduction

(July-October)

(November-June)

(June-July)

• Define ideas, create the plot

• Making the real construction/set

• Edit recording material

• Create the trailer: storyboard, animatic, final trailer

• Mapping theory research

• Redefine ideas

• Design the animations 2D and 3D

• Final storyboard and animatic

• Tests of the projections

• Design scene in 3D • Time to learn about softwares

3.2.

• Make and research the music

• Color edition • Sound edition

• Final projection • Film the show

Origins of the Project The idea of this project appears talking with some friends that had had previous contact with mapping. They introduced me into this world and I started to pay attention to all related with this. Doing a research by Internet I saw there was a lot of different types of mapping a: vj (video jockey), mapping over a theatre, over a person, a building, live projections, during a show, etc. All of them are very interesting and ambitious but I focused my attention over one type: mapping over a theatre. I thought it would be the best form to explain the story I wanted doing it more spectacular, modern, amazing or different basically.

3.3.

Project locations My video projection will be inspired by the Saint George’s legend. For this reason I need to create a set simulating the places where will take place the actions. We can divide the story into three parts: the castle, the village and the fields. To personalize the story of Saint George I opted to set myself the traditional village where the actions take place, I chose my town, Capellades. With this, I can get a more personal and close work including some relevant elements or buildings. The mainly elements we can found on the model are: -

The cave. In my town we can found a prehistoric park with a cave. The shape it have it’s very similar a cave like the legend where the dragon could live.

-

The castle. In my work it will be a mix of the church and the council building of my town. This are two important village’s buildings, so I thought to mix these like a representative element of the castle where lived the king and the princess.

-

The fields. These are spaces where take place some important actions. In the model I’ll have two main parts: the space in front of the cave and the village center.

-

I added another important element of my town, for example the museum of paper. It is a mill we have in my town and it’s very known for a lot of people, so I thought it was important to appear in my work.

This is the evolution, from the first days of preproduction until now, but it’s possible that I change it a bit during the following days.

Regarding to the physical place where I will establish my set, I only need one physical safety place to make my production and put my stage. For the moment I have to define exactly where I’ll establish it, but I have two options: the University Tecnocampus and my home. The advantage of the first place is that probably I could have a free projector provided by the university. If I have to make my project on my home the cost would increase too much for the projector.

3.4.

Music This is a key issue in the mapping development. These types of video projections have no sense without a good soundtrack and some good effects that reinforce the content. The first idea would be to be able to obtain some music to use during the mapping and then, specify the scenes duration according to the sound. With this, we can obtain a symbiotic relationship between these two elements. The musical themes would keep or change according to the scenes. Once I had defined the main parts, we would pass to create the animations and to assemble the video to do the projections. However, the following step would be to square the music to keep on outlining the effects to reinforce and make more spectacular the visual part.

3.5.

Linkages and strategic fit This is a project destined to a public both child (for the theme) and junior or adult (for the format). It can be used in any educational center like primary or high school, shows, festivals or meetings to show the Saint George legend explained in a different way, searching the innovation, novelty, originality and the feeling or emotions of the public. We can find some relations with a country, a language or a culture as the Catalan, that has as a patron saint Saint George, and his story is explained every 23 of April to remember the legend. Moreover, Saint George is also the patron saint of the United Kingdom, and only for this, we have two linkages with two cultures and countries. Another link could be with Capellades, the town represented. This is my main inspiration for the model, and it can be useful to show and introducing the village to the people who don’t know it. To conclude this point, this project doesn’t want to have any propose of economical benefit. It only seeks to provide culture with another way to explain its history and that characterises us as a people. I think that if it is closer, the result can be more successful.

4. Market need and objectives The audiovisual and mapping world is emergent. It is in constant movement, growth, and we can see these types of shows everyday in more places. For this reason I thought to create this mapping with the Saint George legend. It can be more demand, and therefore, can be a product suitable for sharing and distributing. The project will be promoted by Internet, I’ll show it by first time using the social network to share the video where will appear my mapping video projection. My marketing objectives are to get a recognized work. I would like to get a popular video, a viral beautiful video to share.

5. Project Organisation and Management This is an individual project; therefore, I will carry out the main tasks myself. However, I will work with the collaboration and help of another people to develop my work better: professionals, friends, etc. The tutor of Mataró and of Wrexham will monitor the project. Along the year I will keep the contact with all of them, so they will be able to make me a follow-up of the work and the way I’m taking, and guide and orientate me to increase.

5.1.

Project Communication Management The main communication form with my followers and teachers will be through the blog I created last July. Moreover, an audiovisual work needs visual examples, visual elements, inspirations, videos, storyboards, all the things that are complicated to explain by words, and using that I can get this. For this, I think that it’s the best way. The link of the blog is the following one: www.nuriaxp.blogspot.com

6. Project Equipment and Facilities The equipment I need for delivery of the project is: - Computer: to create the content, work and learn about software. I need this during all process. - Projector: during the production, to do some tests with my equipment. I need to have a reference of the projector because it will define what type of stage I need, size, resolution of the project, lights, place, etc. It’s a very important element. For the moment I’m talking with some contacts to find a free projector to do my work. - Stage: I need a table to distribute the elements that will receive the light from the projector. For the moment I have to define exactly what kind of model or base i will use and construct, if it will be formed by different boxes/cardboards, or if it will be a blank background in wich the figures will be showing using the technique of 3D. The bases would be construct with some boxes or cardboards which would receive the light over itself, therefore, it have to be very adjust following the necessities of the base. - Camera: To record the mapping and make the final video. - Material: cardboard, paper to construct the base. - Software: to create all the content, so I’ll need different software at all the steps.

7. Project Funding and Financial Management All the financial management will be provided for me. I’ll pay all the expenditures, either to buy material or to purchase the software licenses. Regarding the purchase or rent the projector, I’m waiting for the University to know if I can have one of the or if I have to rent one, but then the cost would increase. The major part I’ll invert is on a software licenses and education courses, and, if I have to rent a projector, I would have to invert on it, but I hope to found another cheaper solution. For the moment, you can see my expenditures previsions at the appendices.

8. Exit Strategy This project will finish next July 2013. During that month we will finish postproduction and our tutors have to evaluate our work. They will also evaluate the blog, where we will have explained the evolution, developing, experience, research, inspirations, etc. For this, the blog it’s a very important element of the final project, because it will reflects the work done. On the other hand, in September of 2013 we have to defence the project in front of the jury formed by Wales teachers, the tutor of Mataró and external people to the project.

SAINT GEORGE (Sant Jordi) Story line. Once upon a time, in a far, away land there was a small medieval village with a wonderful castle on the top of a hill. There lived the King and his daughter, the Princess. The village didn’t have many villagers so daily life was really quiet. Each family had their own animals and their jobs, which allowed them, carry on with a normal life. It was at the beginning of spring and one day something happened and broke the calm of the village. An enormous and fierce dragon appeared, it was living in a cove near the town. That beast was the worst thing that could have happened to them. It was the evilest, ugliest beast those villagers had ever seen. The dragon could also walk, swim and fly! Moreover, it was very big so it was always starving. The dragon ate everything it came across: flocks of sheep, horses, cows, vegetables... It destroyed all the villagers’ crops. The villagers had to found a solution. They wanted to return to their relaxed and peaceful way of life and stop that chaos. So they decided to go to the castle, looking for the King and tried to make a decision to fight the beast. After some hours they agreed that they would gave two animals to eat every day to keep the dragon far from the village. They had to bring him sheep, bulls, horses... to the cove where the dragon lived. They had a problem. One day the villagers ran out of animals. They hadn’t got anything to give to the beast. They decided to go to talk with the king another day and to found another solution. They decided to give to the dragon a different person every day, as a meal, like a raffle to keep the dragon as far from the village as they could. The days were passing by and they couldn´t stop the beast. Every day the king went to the village to do a “raffle” and choose the unlucky person. One unlucky day the King’s daughter was chosen. That moment was very dramatic. She was the King’s only child so the king didn’t want to give her to the dragon. The people were angry because he had to act like all the other villagers. The king had to accept it. The entire town brought the princess to the dragon, like every other day with every chosen person. The moment the princess was going to be eaten was getting closer. The dragon prepared his big nasty mouth to eat the princess. Suddenly appears a handsome knight riding a white horse that came to the place where all the people was. The boy named George brought a shield and a spear with a red cross that identified him. He went towards the dragon and started to fight with the beast. All the people were surprised. They didn´t know anything about that boy but he was saving the village of that ugliest animal. Finally, after the battle, St Jordi killed the dragon with his spear. From the blood grew a rose bush, and from its branches bloomed red roses. He took one of them and gives a rose to the princess. All the villagers were grateful to George. The dragon was dead and the village could return to its relaxed and calm way of life. Saint George had to return to his village, but he didn’t go back alone, he returned with the princess and with some books that people gave to the boy as a present for the battle. They decided that from that moment they’ll celebrate the Day of Saint George every year at the same day, to remember his fight with the dragon and him saving the population. There starts the tradition which says that every Day of Saint George, at 23th of April. The boy has to present a rose to the girl and the girl has to present a book to the boy as a romantic sign.
