Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background – Project Brief For this project, the students are required to propose potential and strategic programs and activities related to Innovation Hub. The proposal must be based on their site investigations, research on issues, needs and findings. There are some precedents of Innovation Hubs throughout the world such as Innovation Hub for timber, bioprocess, art and design, creative technology, agricultural and other relevant innovation hub. The designs must be having great potential to function as places where innovation might be sparkled, rather than simply displayed. The spaces qualities should allow the innovators to breed their unique ideas.

Apart of fulfilling the project brief and spatial requirement they are also required to come out with innovative architecture design based in order to reflect the function of the building and to align with the project theme for this semester which is Innovative Architecture. They also may choose to explore certain architecture innovation such as for spatial organization and qualities, building technology, façade exploration, artificial intelligence (AI) of building, internet of things (IOT) in building, or exploring new software related to architecture and design.

The design of Innovation Hub in Cyberjaya City must take into account the following design aspects in order to achieve the ultimate design solution including;

1.2 Background of Site – Cyberjaya The selected site is located along Persiaran Apec, Cyberjaya and adjacent to Bangunan Enterprise Iii that consists of number of multimedia companies. Since Cyberjaya principally planned as Multimedia Super Corridor City, and industry based sectors, most of the land uses and buildings around the vicinity are demarcated for commercials and institutions. Instead of adjoining to the multimedia corporations’ buildings, the site also located nearby SME Technopreneur Center that can act as a support agency to the proposed Innovation Hub. Thus, the selection of this site can be considered strategic for this typology of project.

1.3 Site Location

Master Plan

Cyberjaya, which is known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia concerning its association with the MSC Malaysia, is located in the district of Sepang. Sepang is one of the nine (9) districts that make up the state of Selangor. Sepang district shares its border with Kuala Langat to the west, Petaling to the north, Hulu Langat to the northeast and the state of Negeri Sembilan to the east and completely surrounds Putrajaya, which is a Federal Territory.

1.4 Site Investigation Population Analysis.

The cart shows that most of the population in Cyberjaya are working society which they spend most of their time working and be at the office. The least population is about 18% that covers of housewife and elderly. While other 28% of populations are categorize as students including high education students and school children.

Living with working environment and society can cause unhealthy living style and routine. The society must be exposed with pressure towards the environment and themselves. The busy society are usually neglecting their health.

Cyberjaya population charts

Cyberjaya and Putrajaya were consciously conceived and created as symbols of Malay modernity, a ‘unique Malay urban sphere’.

Former prime Minister Mather Mohamad said “Properly regulated and planned, urbanization appears to afford the only method of keeping the Malays abreast of development around them and in the rest of the world”. This shows that Cyberjaya have gain their target to provide job opportunities to 60% of Malay population in Cyberjaya.

Cyberjaya population consist of almost equal gender of male and female. Large number of women require the city to be safe and convinient.

There are 57% of total population in Cyberjaya are aged between 20 – 44 years old that shows a group of working society.

Chapter 2: DESIGN STRATEGIES

Issues

2.1 Micro Site Analysis

“Busy lifestyle versus Health and Wellness” Modern busy lifestyles are often at odds with the healthy aspirations of consumers who want to achieve wellness through good nutrition and exercise. Convenience and limited time to exercise and prepare meals or dislike of food preparation and cooking, shape many people’s lifestyles today. Time seems to be an important factor in whether American families are willing to cook and prepare healthy meals or choose pre-prepared foods, fast foods, and take-out, or eat snack foods instead of meals.

The site surrounding shows there are 26.23% of company around the site proposed. The site are surrounded by entreprise building that shows the site are filled with working people. The site also only live during the weekdays and working hour.

Most of the residency in Cyberjaya are high rise type. The society are more likely choose to stay in appartment as there are more compact and they spend their time at the office instead of staying at the house that have a land. High rise residency also built near the town that gives them the benefits to easily get the supplies for food and appliances at the mall.

Heart disease has remained the chief cause of death among Malaysians for 10 years. The fact that Malaysians have not taken precautionary measures to prevent heart disease is shocking. Last year, a random survey of more than 300,000 employees by Socso’s health screening programme revealed that 36 per cent were overweight, 17 per cent were obese, 13 per cent had hypertension, eight per cent had diabetes and 61 per cent had high cholesterol. More than half of these people are at risk of succumbing to non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Health experts have blamed eating habits and lifestyle for this unhealthy trend. Bad eating habits among Malaysians have contributed to the rising number of obese people. According to a study, one in two Malaysians are either overweight or obese. And obesity is one of the major risk factors for heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure. Therefore, it is imperative that Malaysians change their eating habits and lifestyle.

2.2 Precedent Study 1. The Silicon Valley for agriculture to be built in

Denmark

GXN, a branch of danish architecture firm 3XN, has teamed up with william mcdonough to develop a masterplan for the ‘agro food park’ (AFP) near aarhus, denmark. referred to by the designers as the ‘silicon valley of agriculture’, the project aims to create a geographic hub for farming innovation. ‘AFP will incorporate the benefits of urban density with the proximity of agricultural test fields in an open campus where academic institutes and commercial businesses can collaborate, grow and prosper,’ explains the design team. ‘this project will not only benefit danish agriculture, but also serve as a benchmark for future global food industry development.’

Owned by the danish agriculture & food council, AFP originally opened in 2009 and currently spans a total of 44,000 square meters. the food park is home to 75 companies with nearly 1,000 employees. GXN and william mcdonough + partners’ masterplan — which was developed in collaboration with 3XN, BCVA and urland — intends to expand the facility by an additional 280,000 square meters in multiple phases over the next 30 years.

2. Carozzi Production and Research Food Center

The complex formed by the pasta and cereals factories contains between them the “civic center� and the open square in which the staff meets. This public space is surrounded by the waving forms of the factory roofs, and at the south by the office building, and horizontal red volume, simple and clear, seems to float over water.

4. Site Planning and Development Concentration of people The arrow shows the most concentrated people because of the shop lot opposite the site. Putting the space like cafe can attract people from to come to the building by chance.

Good view from the site The arrow show the good view that can be enjoyed from the site. The views are greenery view of undeveloped area. The view are suitable for the spaces that required view to outsite but does want to be view from inside.

Building circulation To maximize the view of spaces the circulation can be done intersecting from the center of the building to the edge of the space. Thus creating the sense of gather in the atrium of the building.

Sunpath The sunpath are along the west and east of the site as shown in the images. The building that faced the sun most should be built higher to be protected from direct sunlight. Thus the north side of the are build higher.

Circulation for human and vehicle The orange dotted shows the most accesible way for the pedestrian to go to the building while the blue doted shows the path accessible for car.

UV Index is an international standard measurement of the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at a particular place and time. The average UV index throughout the year is 6.67. The highest is on September with 8 UV index reading.

For the period of months from November to May, the average cloud cover is 61.3% and for the months of June to October, there is 43.6% of cloud cover.The average humidity throughout the year is 72.5%. 3.5 Suistainability concept

3.5.1 Bubble deck slab system

Air conditioning refers to the cooling, heating, ventilation and even disinfection of air. The primary function of all airconditioning systems is to provide thermal comfort for building occupants, and serve to maintain indoor air within the two dimensional comfort zone defined by a temperature and relative humid region. There are a wide range of air conditioning systems available, starting from the basic window-fitted units to the small split systems, to the medium scale package units, to the large chilled water systems, and currently to the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.

In the Innovation Hub, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) System is used.

VRF systems are similar to the multi-split systems which connect one outdoor section to several evaporators. However, multi-split systems turn OFF or ON completely in response to one master controller, whereas VRF systems continually adjust the flow of refrigerant to each indoor evaporator. The control is achieved by continually varying the flow of refrigerant through a pulse modulating valve (PMV) whose opening is determined by the micro process or receiving information from the thermistor sensors in each indoor unit. The indoor units are linked by a control wire to the outdoor unit which responds to the demand from the indoor units by varying its compressor speed to match the total cooling and or heating requirements. VRF systems are typically distributed systems–the outdoor unit is kept at a far off location like the top of the building or remotely at grade level and all the evaporator units are installed at various locations inside the building. Typically the refrigerant pipe-work (liquid and suction lines) is very long, running in several hundreds of feet in length for large multi-story buildings.

Staircases Section168 1. Excerpt as provided for by-law 194, upper floor shall have a means of egress via at least two separate staircases.

2. Staircase shall be of such width that in the event of any one staircase not being available for escape purpose the remaining staircases shall accommodate the highest occupancy with provisions in 7th Schedule to these bylaws.

3. The required width of staircase shall be clear with between walls but handrails maybe permitted to encroach on this width to a maximum of 75mm.

4. The required width of staircase shall be maintained throughout its length including landing.

5. Doors giving access to staircase shall be so positioned that their swing shall at no point encroach one the required width of the staircase or landing.

Ventilation of staircases enclosure Section 198 1) All staircases enclosures shall be ventilated at each floor or landing level by either permanent openings or operable windows to the open air having free area of not less than 1 square meter per floor. Hose Reel System Hose reel system is intended for the occupants to use during early stages of fire and comprises hose reel pumps, fire storage water tank, hose reels, pipe works and valve.

Design Standard Hose reels should comply with M.S. 1447: 1999 and are usually placed within 30m hose coverage of each hose reels. One hose reel should be provided for every 800m2 of usable floor space.

Hose reels are usually located in prominent positions at each floor level along escape routes or beside exit doors or staircase.

Each hose reel outside is to discharge a minimum of 30 1/min of water within 6m of all parts of the space protected. The rubber hoses should be to pr EN 694 and are typically 30m in length and 25 mm in diameter. Nozzles should be of the jet and spray adjustable type of different diameters but 8mm is a recommended size.

Pipe work for hose reel system is generally 50mm nominal diameter and the feed to individual hose reel should not be less than 25mm diameter. The piping should be galvanized steel medium grade (Class B) minimum for above ground piping and heavy grade (Class C) for underground pipes. The pipes should be painted with primer and finished with red paint or the hose reel pipe may be identified with red bands painted at elbows and tees.

Dry Riser System Dry Riser system shall be provided in every building in which topmost occupied floor is more than 18 meters but less than 30 meters above fire appliance access level.

Dry Riser system shall be designed and installed in accordance with MS 1489 such that all parts of the floor are within 45 meters from landing valve.

Reviving Malaysian food agriculture with innovation technology can help to improve better population with healthy life. The innovation center of food agriculture can really help the society to have better quality of life that is convenient in terms of quality in life, time and health. This project of innovation hub can also be an opportunities to younger generation to create awareness about agriculture and create their interest in agriculture. Job opportunities also can be obtained from this project and create new platform for agriculture center of knowledge. Farmers who are lacking of guidance and platform to improve or learn their skilled and interest in agriculture also can have benefits from the Innovation Hub. This project has taught me about innovation that are actually exist in Malaysia, however because of the lack of practice and knowledge we tend to ignore the innovation that can actually be done in Malaysia. Despite of lack of thinker, we also a way behind in innovation because of technology and support to begin the start up. Therefore Cyberjaya is one of the method to bring people close to technology innovation that can change the world to a better place. I also has learnt to appreciate environment and turn it to be something new that can benefits other like agriculture. That’s the main reasons why I am choosing agriculture for the project.
