SUPPLEMENT THE SIXTH FORM

TOVEY IN NEED

The highly successful children-in-need event at sixth form included the delicious cake sale, a classic guess-the-number-of-sweets game, a themed card draw and the very popular stocks in which teachers (and some students) volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at them all in the name of charity. Heres what the high earning Mr Tovey had to say about the experience:

“It was fine. Although I would bring some dry trousers next time.”

Following these wise words, we managed to convince him the interview wasn’t a joke which led to a slightly longer statement when asked about his high sponge count:

“I’m happy with it because I take it not so much that the students wanted to throw sponges at me but that they care about the children.”

Joshua Dignam however, who can be seen pelting the computer science teacher with his wet sponge above, went on record saying:

“no. you could say I hate the children”

In contrast, the volunteers including Mr Tooth, Mr Purcifer, Mr Cowan and Mr Glasbey have managed to raise a substantial amount of money for the charity only at the expense of wet clothes and noble sacrifise, although the highly anticipated Mr Yale managed to dodge his turn, leaving some quite disappointed. The other events also saw great success, quite obviously the pyjama turnout rate was exceptionally high and cake sale brownies sold out within minutes. Logan Thompson-Davies took home the sweet jar with his guess of 655 being closest to the true value of 622, though he had left by the time the winner was announced and so had to have it personally delivered to him. Bradley McGouran won a box of heroes picking the football team Norwich and

Tom Chatterje won some quality streets picking the team Luton. Dirty Dancing was the movie Melanie Steele chose, winning a £20 restaurant voucher, which quite honestly puts the chocolate to shame. Overall, sales from cakes, guessing games, stocks and donations raised £477 after deducting spendings thanks to the fundraising team. It was a huge increase to the previous year’s £160 and an incredible accomplishment for the entire sixth form.

the Year 12 player Kayden Davidson who took home the grand fake prize of £1, the host of the year 13 game had this to say about the game:

“many were forced onto it due to a lack in option but it was a good laugh none the less”.

Another great pick for last term's wellbeing week was Dodgeball, spearheaded by athletes and non-athletes alike, many teams went head-to-head in an all-out fight with many enjoying this activity and being the third most popular across both year groups, star player Layton Laws spoke fondly saying

“it was fun to spend time with friends”

and Arhum Saeed saying:

“I liked playing a sport in school again”.

Finally, another great pick for the wellbeing activity was colouring as a form of

Wellbeing Week

Every half term a beautiful break from stress and anxiety that has built up comes around, a time we can all relax with fun games or calming activities, wellbeing week. This time, celebrated with form activities, brought about such events as gameshows, colouring for mindfulness, dodgeball, reading for pleasure and the biggest hit of them all, chair yoga. Across both Years 12 and 13 all students had their pick of de-stressing ideas.

Gameshow led by Mr Tovey and Mr Johnstone was widely received and thought of to be the pinnacle of activities. The overcrowded mayhem that ensued inspired all students to laugh and cheer as some lucky winners celebrated big wins in the hit game of Deal or no deal, inspired by the real-life gameshow, students fought valiantly to take home the biggest prize although some weren't too lucky such as

mindfulness, where every line crossed or every animal or cloud miscoloured our artistic student’s stress faded. Being a great activity for all this surely will return in the coming weeks.

Many did want more activities, a popular option that failed to run was reading for pleasure. A strong activist for this was shocked at this failure saying:

“I chose reading but annoyingly it didn’t run because of a lack of people apparently”.

Despite the short range of activities there is no protest for another week like this and for now the only question is, what activities will behold us next?

Mercians

On the 21st of November the hit indie band the Mercians interrupted usual schedules to deliver songs alongside a powerful message about the importance of sustaining a strong mental wellbeing and the idea of true bravery resonating from asking for help.

The up-and-coming band has had multiple songs hit Number 1 on iTunes in the recent months and now has hit 10k on Instagram, celebrating their success on tour they are doing several live performances including in Newcastle December 16th.

The band from Leicester debuted multiple new songs including a hit title called

“Oxygen” which delivered the message of asking for help during spouts of depression and anxiety, in between their newest songs the band members shared stories of their own spirals of depression caused from a multitude of areas such as school stress, relationships, home life and illnesses. Also, the band debuted another song further expressing the importance of asking for help even from a close friend, parent or guardian. Lead singer Matt expressed throughout his life in education he has combatted his illness and breaking up with his girlfriend of 7 year, the affect it has had on his social life and his relationships with his family were difficult, but ultimately expressing this to those around him rescued him from his thoughts of negativity.

Settling In

Settling in can sometimes be even harder than studying or handling workload. Sometimes it can take people longer than others to become truly comfortable with their environment. The sixth form offers a multitude of opportunities that won’t only allow you to get to know more people and become more confident, but will also give you that helpful boost to your personal statement for UCAS.

Firstly, is our student ambassador group. This is a brilliant opportunity to meet new people and get to know others even better. It gives you a chance to have more of a say in how our school is run and increases your confidence, as you are encouraged to give your opinion and make a change. The ambassador group also develops a countless number of skills as you work with new people to organise key events. There’s also our mentorship and literacy programs, which have just begun, and are great schemes, especially for people who are interested in a career in education. By helping new Y7s settle in, I think you’ll find that it’ll help you settle

in as well, as the advice you give can so easily be applied to sixth-form life.

Another thing that can be overlooked is class participation. You may think that it’s embarrassing but it really is important, as it not only allows for a good relationship with teachers, but also gives people a taste of what you’re really like, and gives you some personality that will draw new people to you, who have similar interests or beliefs as you.

Finally, extracurricular activities can also be extremely useful for making new friends and feeling more comfortable in what is a completely different environment to secondary school. A great example of an extracurricular is the musical, and while you can’t join that anymore, there’ll be countless more of similar nature running, that’ll allow you to not only work in a group and increase confidence but will also maybe even allow you to meet people from the year above, who could offer interesting advice to take on board for the rest of your time here.

Working

So, we get it. There is lots of work to do in sixth form. However, this is all necessary, and so wouldn’t you like to know how to do it faster, while ensuring hours of free time every day, and doing better in all of your subjects by studying smarter?

First of all, you should use independent and supervised study to their fullest potentials. This is time for you to do work during the school day instead of at home. Try to get the majority of your work done in this time to avoid homework.

Secondly, especially for exercise based subjects (like maths and the sciences) you should get most of your work done while in the lesson, as you are usually given time to do this. Don’t waste this an hour saved during the day is an hour less of your free time. It also leaves time for you to ask your teachers any questions about anything you don’t understand. Don’t leave revion to the last minute, or you willl regret it. I have heard from many teachers that A-levels are a very difficult part of education, so you do not want to stress when it comes to exams. Create online notes or flashcards (I’d reccomend

Anki personally) and do at least a few exam questions weekly to get used to the format. While the ‘active recall’ study method is forced on us so heavily, it is absolutely worth it as it is essential in revision. As a bonus, consistently doing revision will result in you being better at the basic skills of your subject, meaning work takes less time and so more time to do what you want.

Finally, collaboration is the best way to improve at anything, including studying. Having someone doing similar subjects to you hold you accountable means that you will have to study or shatter your ego, which no-one wants. This also allows you to teach others content if they don’t understand, and teaching others is the best way to learn as you are required to fully understand it before you can properly tell someone else how to do it. Collaboration with teachers is also a must, and it is essential to have a good relationship with them in order to be comfortable asking ‘stupid’ questions (although no questions are stupid) in lesson otherwise when the exams come, you will be the stupid one.
