For over 40 years Nulon has been a proud Australian manufacturer and has grown to become an iconic Australian brand and success story. Founded in 1980, the Nulon business originated on Sydney's Northern Beaches and began servicing the automotive aftermarket with a handful of specialty additive products, some of which are still manufactured to this day.

UNDERSTANDING ENGINE OIL SPECIFICATIONS

Industry standard specifications are developed and constantly evolved to meet the needs of modern engine designs and applications.

This guide explains what the most important engine oil specifications are and what they mean:

SAE: The following properties of an engine oil are described by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) grades. Taking the example of an SAE 0W-30 engine oil, the first numeral describes the viscosity at low temperatures. The smaller this number the better the oil flows at low temperatures to reach the important lubrication points in the engine. The second figure describes the viscosity at running temperatures.

ACEA: The European ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d’Automobiles; aka European Automobile Manufacturers Association) specifications designate engine oil applications with letters:

A for car petrol engines

B for small-capacity diesel engines in cars, vans and transporters

C for cars fitted with exhaust particulate filters

E for commercial vehicle diesel engines

API: API (American Petroleum Institute) categories refer to American requirements and quality criteria, which engine oils must fulfil. The current API grades are SP for petrol engines and C for commercial diesel engines.

Category for low viscosity engine oils with a particular low High Temperature, High Shear viscosity (HTHS, <3.5m Pas). Recommended viscosity grades are XW-30 and XW-20.

Category for conventional and low-viscosity engine oils.

Category for conventional and low-viscosity engine oils with greater demands than A2. Out-performs ACEA A2 with regard to Noack (evaporation losses), piston cleanliness and oxidation stability.

Category for conventional and low-viscosity engine oils. Corresponds to ACEA A3 but with lower HTHS viscosity. A reduction in fuel consumption of 2.5 % compared to a 15W-40 reference oil must be proven in a test engine.

DIESEL ENGINES:

Category for low-viscosity engine oils with particularly low High Temperature High Shear viscosity (corresponds to A1).

Category for conventional and low viscosity engine oils.

Category for conventional and low-viscosity engine oils. Out-performs ACEA B2 with regard to cam wear, piston cleanliness and viscosity stability in high soot conditions.

New category for diesel Direct Injection engines (TDI).

Corresponds to ACEA B4 but with lower HTHS viscosity. A reduction in fuel consumption of 2.5 % compared to a 15W-40 reference oil must be proven in a test engine.

Introduced in 10/2004 for car diesel engines fitted with exhaust particulate filters. Sulphate ash content, max. 0.5 % with lowered HTHS (most common in Mazda & Ford).

Introduced in 10/2004 for car diesel engines fitted with exhaust particulate filters. Sulphate ash content, max. 0.8 % with HTHS > 2.9 mPas (most common in Peugeot / Citroen / Renault).

Introduced in 10/2004 for car diesel engines with exhaust particulate filters. Sulphate ash content, max. 0.8 % with HTHS > 3.5 mPas (widest appeal of the ACEA C Series).

Sulphated Ash content as C1, HTHS viscosity and FE as C3. Low minimum TBN (most common in Renault & Nissan).

Mid-SAPS oil, Sulphated Ash content as C2 and C3, but a HTHS viscosity ≥2.6 / >2.9 mPa.s. TBN as per C4. Fuel economy improvement performance as C1 (2% better than C3).

UNDERSTANDING MANUFACTURER APPROVALS

Many Original Equipment Manufacturers issue standards for their vehicles, known as ‘Approvals’. Once issued, it is up to lubricant manufacturers to produce products which meet these specific standards.

Nulon is a lubricant manufacturer dedicated to making products which meet these specific standards in order to secure these highly sought-after, yet complex, ‘Approvals’.

CARBON NEUTRALITY AT NULON

Since 2020, the FUCHS Group has been completely carbonneutral at all of its more than 60 locations worldwide – from the energy consumed in production all the way up to the consumables used in administrative operations. Yet we do not just focus on the ecological footprint in our own factories, but look beyond ourselves to the entire process and value chain of our products. This is why we participate in research projects on the use of sustainable raw materials. Together with our suppliers, we develop standards and measures for quantifying and certifying sustainability along the entire value chain. Above all though, our products reduce friction and increase energy efficiency for our customers – this has both a financial and ecological impact.

In 2023 the Nulon manufacturing plant in Sunshine Victoria is being upgraded with solar panels which will provide over 20% of the site's energy requirements. In addition to drastically reducing external energy consumption, the incorporation of the 360kWp solar panels will further reduce emissions generated in Nulon manufacturing operations.

In the search for improved engine efficiency, power and performance, vehicle manufacturers are increasingly pushing the technological performance barriers of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE).

LEARN ABOUT ENGINE COOLANT

Engine coolants play a critical role in the reliability and performance of your engine. The last thing you need is for the engine to overheat, as severe damage can occur or even failure in the worst instances. Engine oil does help with heat dissipation (in fact it is one of the various functions of engine oils) but this is not enough. This heat needs to be further dissipated.

Hence, engine coolants have one major function – to transfer heat. All the various components that go into engine coolants are there to enable this to occur while protecting the engine from the effects of the coolant itself.

A coolant does not need to lubricate the engine or prevent engine wear. Rather, it needs to protect the components in the cooling system that allow it to fulfil its function.

For example, an engine coolant must not cause wear in the water pump. Both water and water/glycol coolant, when used in isolation, can cause rust in cooling systems and therefore must include additive chemistry to prevent rust and corrosion. At low temperatures water will freeze so glycol is used in coolant to dramatically lower the freezing point while also increasing the boiling point. A coolant must also be compatible with seals, hoses, gaskets and not be aggressive to the metals in the cooling system.

SO WHAT IS AN ENGINE COOLANT?

In short, it is a “Heat Transfer Medium” and it can also be termed a “Thermal Fluid”. Modern engine coolants are a water/glycol mix with inhibitors and other additives. Mostly they are a 50% mix, generally driven by the need to protect against freezing but also against localised boiling after engine switch-off, plus providing better cavitation control.

Concentrated coolants can be used at generally between 33% and 60% and the corrosion inhibitors are optimized for a 50% mix rate. You never use 100% concentrated coolant in any cooling system. Premixed or Ready-to-Use coolants should not be further diluted as the corrosion inhibitors are already optimised for best performance.

Water-based coolants are generally no longer used – the last automotive OEM to use water-based was Ford Australia in the 1990s. However, heavy-duty locomotive, marine and genset engines often still use water-based coolant where freezing protection is not required.

WHAT IS IN ENGINE COOLANT?

» Water – the carrier fluid

» Glycol – for anti-freeze/anti-boil

» Rust and Corrosion Inhibitors – to protect the engine

» Anti-foam additives – to stop foaming and reduce cavitation

» Dispersants – to stop particles from dropping out

» Buffering agents – to keep the coolant alkaline and not acidic (pH)

» Bittering agent – so that people and animals do not drink it

» Dye

GLYCOL

Usually (mono) Ethylene Glycol (MEG) which is a biodegradable raw material most suitable in the manufacture of engine coolants, but is also toxic in high concentrations. These products all contain "Bitrex".

Propylene Glycol (PG) is also used in more environmentally sensitive areas as it is non-toxic.

FUNCTIONAL ADDITIVES (used in both glycol and water-based coolants)

Organics – organic acid salts, triazoles, thiazoles

Inorganics – silicates, phosphates, borates, nitrites, molybdates, nitrates, amines, hydroxides

Depending on the OEM, there can be various combinations of the above in a given coolant.

These additives all perform different functions – or the same function in different ways or to different degrees of effectiveness. Inorganics are basically dissolved solids, and these do deplete over time or may chemically react over time in the case of the pH buffers.

Dye is used to identify a brand or an OEM fill colour. It is no longer 100% applicable to the type of technology actually in the bottle or radiator system.

UNDERSTANDING ENGINE COOLANT

TECHNNOLOGY

COOLANTS ARE SPLIT INTO FAMILIES

Hybrid (HOAT)

» Most common sub-type of traditional HOAT is P-OAT (Phosphate OAT)

» Typically red, green or blue in colour

» HOAT and P-OAT have varying life spans, with some OEMs claiming up to 15 years

Full Organic Acid Technology (OAT)

» As the name suggests, no in-organics

» Use carboxylic acid salts and other compounds

» Essentially non-depleting

» Orange, pink, purple-pink, blue... some yellow in heavy-duty applications

» Very common in propylene glycol coolants

» N-OAT is nitrite containing for Heavy-Duty (also has molybdate i.e. NM-OAT) and usually deep red

Next Generation Hybrids

(Lobrids)

» Si-OAT – uses Silicates, good life span, pink/purple

» PSi-OAT – uses Silicates and a little Phosphate. Developed for high output, low capacity engines that use a lot of aluminium

» Also applies to a next-generation P-OAT used by Ford USA which is yellow

There is also an emerging market for low-conductivity coolants to service the growing number of EVs, hybrids and fuel cell vehicles. Many right now use standard coolants, usually lobrid and OAT (with some exceptions) but in the future this may change. Battery pack coolants for full EVs are not suitable for use in engines at this point in time.

CHANGING YOUR COOLANT

When using a new engine coolant the cooling system must be drained and flushed prior to its introduction. This ensures the removal of any corrosion, suspended soils and coolant contaminants that may have built up in the cooling system over time. Importantly, it removes the old coolant which may not necessarily be compatible with the new coolant.

General Procedure

Drain system coolant into an appropriate container and dispose of the used coolant in accordance with local waste regulations.

Check all system hoses and clamps are in good condition and serviceable.

Flush system with hose until no colour is evident.

Fill system with the appropriate mix of Nulon Cooling System Flush and good quality/deionised/demineralised water and run until engine is at operating temperature and thermostats are open.

Drain system again into an appropriate container, flush system again, ideally with deionised/demineralised water. If the discharge is not clear and colourless, repeat previous step until system is clean and discharge is clear and colourless.

Ensure system is fully drained.

If using a concentrate, determine the system capacity. Using from 33% to 50% of the total capacity, premix that amount in water in a suitable container. It is not recommended to initially add concentrated coolant directly to the cooling system. If unable to premix, add 2-3L of water to the system before adding the appropriate amount of concentrated coolant and then continue to top-up with water. If you are using a Nulon ready-to-use premix coolant, skip this step and proceed to Step 8.

Fill system with your mixed product and run until engine is at operating temperature and thermostats are open. If originally using a concentrate, top up with water until system is full. If using a Nulon ready-to-use premix coolant, only top up with that product.

Re-check all system hoses and clamps for leaks.

Always top-up system with a premix of the coolant you have used.

Consult Original Equipment Manufacturers coolant replacement timetable and filling procedures.

MAINTAINING YOUR COOLING SYSTEM

Over time, there may be some coolant loss from the system. Always top-up with a premix of the same coolant you used to fill the system. This keeps the inhibitors at the right level to protect the cooling system. If unable to do so, ensure water top-up is kept to a minimum (200-500mL maximum) and ensure you purchase a premixed version of the original coolant for later use or Nulon Multi-Vehicle ONE Coolant Premix can be used if you are unsure. Always keep your top-up engine coolant in a safe place away from children and pets.
