1. The Nijmeegse Vierdaagse
The Nijmeegse Vierdaagse is a hiking event that first took place in 1909 and has taken place every year since (apart from this year, due to the Corona Crisis). It starts on the third Tuesday of July and lasts for four days. Every year, people from up to 80 different countries partake. It is the biggest hiking event in the world. During the week that the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse takes place, there are many festivities throughout the city and its surroundings, which are called the Vierdaagsefeesten.
2. Mariken van Nieumeghen
Mariken van Nieumeghen is a book with an unknown author, the first edition of which is known from 1518. It is a miracle play that is saturated with religious messages and symbolisms. The book is well-known throughout the Netherlands as high schoolers are often required to read it as an assigned reading. You can even find a statue of Mariken at the Grand Market Place in the city centre.
3. Goffertpark
Goffertpark is a place in Nijmegen that is well-known for its large stretch of ground that is used as a podium for concerts, music festivals, circus acts and so on. It is one of the places in the Netherlands where some of the most famous musicians to have ever existed have performed: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Pink Floyd, and many more! If you ever get to visit a concert there, it will be something you will never forget!
