The Amount of Information I was able to Learn was Invaluable

COURSE OVERVIEW ON COMPLETION OF THIS MODULE STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACQUIRED AN UNDERSTANDING OF (A) THE METHODOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION; (B) THE BASICS OF COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY; AND (C) HOW THIS IS USED TO BUILD CONNECTIONS BETWEEN A COMMUNITY AND THEIR HERITAGE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: (1) UNDERSTAND THE BROAD RANGE OF TECHNIQUES USED BY ARCHAEOLOGISTS TO INFER PAST HUMAN BEHAVIOR FROM CULTURAL SITES AND MATERIAL CULTURE; (2) APPRECIATE THE ORIGINS/ROLE OF COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY; (3) HAVE A GOOD BASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE MEDIEVAL HISTORY OF IRELAND, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON MEDIEVAL TRIM. OVER THE TWO WEEKS STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE APPROXIMATELY 80 HOURS, SPREAD OVER THE FOLLOWING AREAS: ONSITE EXCAVATION/PRACTICAL WORK; ONSITE WORKSHOPS; ONSITE LECTURES; FIELD TRIPS; SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING.

LEARNING DETAILS Assessment In total, 60% of the available marks will be allocated during continuous assessment while students are onsite with IAFS (allocated equally for onsite participation [30%] and completion of a field journal [30%]). The remaining 40% will be assessed by examination of a 1,500-word paper, due one week after the completion of the program. Daily work It is important to understand that this is a summer school with a difference. Students will be expected to participate in excavations at the site on a full-time basis Monday to Friday. This work can be physically strenuous and demanding – we want students to engage both bodies and minds as they experience archaeology and anthropology in the field.
