Experiential learning is the foundation of a Northeastern education. Through this model of learning, students combine their classroom studies with real-world experiences that help them reinforce what they’ve learned. There are several ways for students to put their education into action:
› Experiential Network (XN): Through the Experiential Network, students help businesses solve real challenges as in-class projects and present their recommendations.
› Capstone/thesis projects: In many programs, students finish their studies with an extensive research project of their choosing. These projects often require interviews with community members, field observations, and other research activities to collect original insights.
› Service learning: Students volunteer their skills in healthcare, education, disaster relief, law, and more to support communities abroad and closer to home.
› Research: Students can take on their own research project or join one of the many state-of-the-art labs and institutes across Northeastern’s campuses to conduct groundbreaking research.
Northeastern’s internationally recognized co-op teams and advisors will help you find work opportunities, write your resumé, and prepare for interviews. While on co-op, students become impactful members of their teams, work on cutting-edge projects, and expand their professional networks.
Co-ops can take place in the same region as your home campus or abroad, at global powerhouses like Amazon and Google or at small startups, and in roles to support your post-graduation career plans or in areas you’re just starting to explore.
As you search for a co-op and choose the best option for your career goals, you’ll have the full support of Northeastern’s dedicated team. Securing a co-op opportunity follows a similar process to a full-time job search. In general, you’ll follow these steps:
1. Declare your intent to participate in co-op.
› Review your college or program’s website to determine your eligibility.
› Ensure you have completed one academic year of study before starting your co-op.
2. Prepare and explore.
› Enroll in a co-op or career course or workshop based on your program’s requirements.
› Participate in mock interviews, prepare your resumé, and create a LinkedIn profile if you haven’t already done so.
› Meet with your designated co-op or career advisor to discuss your goals, refine your resumé, and review job profiles.
3. Apply.
› Evaluate positions of interest that match your career goals.
› Apply within Northeastern’s co-op network and to external postings.
4. Interview.
› Meet with employers during interviews, which can vary from business to business.
5. Accept a co-op.
› Review offers with your co-op or career advisor.
› Accept an offer, confirm your starting date and other terms, and get ready to begin your work experience.
Previous co-ops have included:
› Technical support liaison for the U.N.’s Chief Central Support Services Division in Jordan
