Locally Grown Goodness

Summer is one of those seasons you can really taste, especially in our Produce Department!

Based right here in the heart of California, we’re thrilled to be able to partner with growers and producers just down the road and throughout our great state to offer a wide variety of farm-fresh produce at the peak of ripeness. Look for our Local and CA-Grown lifestyle icons while you shop to find local gems, including our abundant selection of organic produce.

From melons and greens to stone fruit and so much more, just walk into any of our stores to see, smell, and taste the difference for yourself! (Seriously, if we don’t offer one first, ask one of our Produce pros for a sample and discover your next favorite fruit or vegetable.) Just remember, our selection changes based on seasonality, so drop by your local Nugget Market to see what’s growing on!

Melon Mastery

Not to be melondramatic, but freshly grown melons are one of summer’s greatest joys. These sweet, California-grown gourds are as delicious as they are refreshing. And while we may think of honeydew, cantaloupe, or the ever-iconic watermelon, there are so many more melons to explore. Just remember, Mother Nature has the final say, so selection may vary by store and season!

Watermelon

Available massive or mini, seedless or classic, these iconic summer fruits have smooth, green and yellow rinds and bright red flesh with a sweet, juicy flavor and crisp, refreshing crunch.

Yellow Doll Watermelon

Similar to a standard watermelon on the outside, these seeded sensations are bright yellow on the inside with softer skin (easier to cut into) and a high sugar content (extra sweet!).

Sugar Baby Watermelon

These petite summer treats are just as juicy as their bigger brethren, but pint-sized (almost literally!) for extra convenience. These babies are super sweet, seeded, and ideal for smaller settings.

Black Watermelon

Also known as Imagination Melons, these seedless fruits have dark rinds, red flesh, and great consistency and flavor. Ours are locally grown by Vierra Farms in West Sacramento—see p. 7!

Cantaloupe

With a netted, beige and greenish rind and creamy orange flesh, cantaloupes are a classic choice year-round thanks to their sweet, mildly floral taste and melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Charentais

This fantastic French cantaloupe is smaller than other varieties, has pale, smooth skin lined with green stripes, and contains creamy orange flesh prized for its distinct fragrance and sweetness.

Sharlyn

These marvelous melons look kind of like elongated cantaloupes with a mosaic-like netting on the outside, pale yellow or green flesh on the inside, and a subtly sweet, balanced flavor.

Honeydew

With a smooth, almost white rind surrounding pale green flesh, this summer favorite boasts a firm yet juicy texture and a mild, refreshing flavor reminiscent of honey (and dew!).

Snow Leopard

An eye-catching variety of honeydew, these mini melons have smooth, snowy skin with occasional green striations surrounding firm, almost white flesh that’s sweet and subtly floral.

Piel De Sapo

Meaning “frog skin” in Spanish, this melon has green and yellow splotches on its rind (befitting the name). It has a honeydew-like interior that’s even sweeter, crisper, and more aromatic.

Galia

These golden globes have yellowish rinds with fine, pale netting, plus light green flesh similar to honeydew but with a sweet, tropical flavor closer to cantaloupe crossed with banana.

The Melon Manual

HOW TO SELECT

Watermelons:

Look for a heavy, round melon with larger webbing and a yellow patch (a.k.a. field spot) which indicates ripeness. Bonus points if you can find little black crystals of sugar sap on the rind!

Other Melons:

Choose a melon that’s heavy for its size and firm but with a little give. Some melons are very fragrant when ripe (especially on the end), but others are subtler, so you have to go by touch.

Still need help picking the perfect produce? Our Produce pros are always happy to help!

HOW TO STORE

Watermelons:

Store whole watermelons at room temperature until right before you’re ready to eat, as prolonged refrigeration can make them mealy. Once cut, store covered in the fridge. Other Melons:

Most other melons will continue to ripen off the vine, so store at room temperature until they’re at your desired ripeness, then store whole or cut in the fridge until ready to eat.

Canary

Bright yellow on the outside with smooth skin and an elongated shape, this variety of muskmelon has crisp, pale flesh that’s super sweet with just enough tang to make it sing!

Goddess

This divine variety of cantaloupe looks very similar to the standard type, but with less pronounced netting and softer orange flesh that’s juicy, fruity, and extra sweet.

Melon Mania

Nothing says summer like fresh, California-grown melons! These fantastic fruits are perfect for healthy snacking, fun appetizers, delicious desserts, and refreshing summer sips. When life gives you melons, what will you make…?

vierra farms

When we say we offer locally grown produce, we mean it! Based just down the way in West Sacramento, Vierra Farms has been growing great goods in Yolo County since 1989. (Fun Fact: Our West Sacramento Nugget Market location is less than 5 miles away—talk about farm to fork!)

Passionate about produce from an early age, Dave Vierra began Vierra Farms when he was just 18 with his grandfather’s two-acre garden. Nowadays, Dave still takes care of those early acres, plus 800 more, growing a variety of specialty produce like corn, pumpkins, and one of our favorites: black seedless watermelons.

Vierra Farms Black Watermelons

Known (and nicknamed!) for their incredibly dark green rind, these marvelous melons are officially called Imagination Melons. Melon-call them what you will, they’re fan favorites for a reason! Beneath their stunning sable surface, these sweet, seedless fruits have the same bright red flesh you’d expect of a regular watermelon, but with unmatched consistency and flavor. Add in the fact that they’re so locally grown, and these babies really are one in a melon!

In different seasons, you might know Vierra Farms by other names, like Dave’s Pumpkin Patch every October and Dave’s Country Christmas Tree Lot in the winter. Year-round, they celebrate both the joys of farm-fresh produce and the experience of visiting a local grower. From hayrides to corn mazes, apple cider to cinnamon donuts, their annual Cornival is a hands-down hoot, and their Christmas tree lot transforms the farm into a wintery wonderland. One thing’s for sure—there’s never a dull moment at Vierra Farms!

Greens & Things FROM MILD...

Did you know California is one of the main lettucegrowing regions in the U.S.? Better be-leaf it! From spinach to romaine and more, leafy greens are a staple in any veggie lover’s diet, but some are better suited for salads than sautés. Soft or structured, mild or bitter, keep reading to learn the ins and outs of fresh greens (and reds and purples) like these. Without further ado, lettuce begin!

Butter Lettuce

Soft and delicate, these leaves have a buttery texture (hence the name) and a mild, pleasantly sweet taste, making them ideal for enjoying raw in salads, sandwiches, or lettuce wraps.

Red Leaf Lettuce

This lovely lettuce has loose, ruffled leaves that go from green at the base to red at the edges. They’re tender in texture with a mild flavor just bordering on bitter, usually

Spinach

One of the most versatile greens around, these dark leaves are popular worldwide raw, steamed, sautéed, and more. Just note, their volume reduces dramatically when cooked!

This tall garden lettuce is a kitchen classic with bright green leaves and white ribs, a firm, crisp texture that stands up to heat, and fresh, approachable flavor on the sweeter side.

Romaine

Endive Frisée

Also known as curly endive, this frilly frond has long, intricate, pale green leaves with a slightly bitter bite. Add them to salads and other dishes for a robust pop of flavor

...TO BOLD

The Greens Guide

HOW TO SELECT

When shopping for leafy greens, look for bright colors, firm, tight heads (if applicable), and strong leaves with no browning on the tips or “rusting.” Leaves will darken, soften, and wilt over time, so make sure to store properly once you bring them home!

thick stems and sturdy leaves, the younger variety offers a much milder eating experience with a tender texture and subtly earthy flavor great for raw applications.

Arugula

Known as “rocket” across the pond, arugula has bright green, indented leaves and a bold, peppery flavor perfect for adding a little punch of spice when raw. Serve wilted to temper

HOW TO STORE

Store whole heads of greens wrapped with a damp towel in a plastic bag in the fridge. For individual leaves, wash and spin them to remove most of the moisture, then store in a towel-lined bag or rigid airtight container with a lid. For living lettuce, refrigerate in its original container until you’re ready to use it. For all of the above, the crisper drawer is your friend! It helps control humidity levels and air flow to maximize the shelf life of your produce.

HOW TO WASH

Separate the head of lettuce into individual leaves (if not already loose), then dunk in cold water and lift out to rinse off any dirt or debris. Spin dry or layer on paper towels to remove excess moisture before serving, cooking, or storing.

Part of the chicory family, radicchio has reddish purple leaves and white ribs with a firm, crisp texture and sharp, bitter flavor that mellows when cooked—delicious grilled or roasted!

Radicchio

Go Greens!

From fresh salads and sandwiches to savory sides, sweet smoothies, and more, it’s easy eating green with radiant recipes like these!

Sweet, Sweet Stone Fruits

There’s nothing quite like biting into a fresh, fragrant, super juicy summertime stone fruit. They’re called that because of the pits, a.k.a. stones, at their center, which help keep them on the tree while growing and transport nutrients to the flesh (and boy, are those nutrients delicious)! In addition to cherishing each bite straight, it’s time to start making those sweet seasonal staples like crisps and cobblers (okay, salads too). And it’s not like you don’t have many options, either. Check out what our Produce Department has to offer!

Moonlight Companies

Founded here in California on a culture of continual improvement, Moonlight has been making waves in the farming industry for more than 30 years. While

they grow a variety of prime produce, they specialize in stone fruits like sweet, juicy peaches and nectarines. And it’s even bigger than that! Moonlight is “changing the world one fruit at a time” by being true pioneers of what they do, striking a balance between environmentally responsible farming practices, dedication to a safe and comfortable working environment for their associates, and ongoing

Peaches

These splendid stone fruits are a symbol of summer, with sunny hues and a juicy, creamy texture. Yellow peaches are tangy and sweet, great for baking. White peaches have less acidity, but are sweeter and more floral, perfect for snacking. Ripe peaches should have a sweet scent and feel soft when pressed lightly.

Nectarines

Nectarines are like peaches, but without the fuzz—there’s one gene making the difference there! Nectarines are also ever-so-slightly smaller and sometimes described as having more golden notes of honey. Like peaches, there are white and yellow varieties; select them when they smell sweet and are a little soft.

Apricots

Richly orange-golden, fresh, fuzzy apricots are a midsummer treasure only around for a short season! Not super juicy, their flavor is like that of a peach crossed with a plum—sweet, floral, and even a little sour. Look for plump, firm, unblemished apricots without any soft spots, squishiness, or wrinkles. Use them in dishes from sweet to savory!

Cherries

With their shiny, vibrant hue, plumpness, and sweet juiciness, cherries are virtually irresistible during their short season: late spring to summer. While their level of sweetness depends on the type (Rainier being among the sweetest!), any you pick are best selected firm, large, and vibrant.

investments in the latest state-of-the-art, the-future-is-now technologies (plus good, old-fashioned hard work, of course!). Their efficient harvesting and sorting practices enable only the finest, freshest, and most flavorful fruit under the moon to hit our stores.

Try Moonlight’s fruit yourself to see how fresh and juicy it really is—you’ll be over the moon!

Plum Paradise

The world of plums is an expansive one indeed—and don’t even get us started on their hybrid stone fruit offshoots. Actually, do! Here’s a starter guide to the prolific plum!

These small, yellow-all-over stone fruits bring major sunny vibes and sweet, rich flavor, typically available mid- to late-summer. Great for eating, baking, salads, sauces, and chutneys!

A pluot is part plum and part apricot—a hybrid of the two—but it leans more on the plum side. Reddish on the inside and outside, they taste refreshingly sweet with a tiny bit of tartness, less so than a plum. Enjoy them mid- to late summer!

Red Plum

These plums sport a scarlet-purple hue, and the soft, dense flesh can follow suit, or go rogue and be yellow! Sweet with mildly sour overtones, they’re great for baking and eating raw in late summer to early fall.

Lemon Plum

A variety of yellow plum, these earlyseason, teardrop-shaped tantalizers start out a lovely lemon hue, blushing into a reddish magenta as they ripen. They can be used like yellow plums and are firm and pleasantly sweet with notes of tangerine.

Verry Cherry Plum

If you’re on the prowl for a unique stone fruit hybrid, try these little delights on for size! A cross between a plum and a cherry, these mid-summer marvels are crunchy and tart, with a cherry-like sweetness.

Black Plum

Cut into one of these midnight-hued marvels to find soft, dark red, purple, or yellow flesh and take a bite to enjoy their sweet-tart flavor. They’re delightful in desserts all through summer into early fall!

Italian Prune Plum

These egg-shaped fruits are firm with honey-hued flesh. Super sweet when ripe with a whisper of citrus, they’re amazing dried or turned into tarts, jams, or compotes. Find them late summer to early fall!

Grilling Tips for Champion Chicken

• Start with premium poultry like our Fresh to Market Chicken, which is raised cage-free and vegetarian-fed with no antibiotics ever. It’s also handtrimmed and pure air-chilled, a process that helps the meat stay fresh, tender, and flavorful without any added water weight.

• To avoid flare-ups, remove excess fat and avoid marinades with too much oil.

• High-sugar marinades will tend to burn if the heat is too high, so be sure to mind the temperature.

• Use a meat thermometer to make sure white meat doesn’t dry out from being overcooked. The safe internal temperature for chicken is 165°F.

• Dark meat is more forgiving and becomes more tender with higher internal temperature, so you have a little more leeway.

RECIPES

• For crispy skin, start grilling chicken skin-side down over direct heat until browned. When the fat begins to render, move to medium, indirect heat for most of the cooking time.

Prime Picks for Pigging Out

Perhaps the most popular cut, the boneless loin chop is lean, approachable, versatile, and tasty, making it a fantastic choice for all sorts of entrées. The rib chop is similar in many ways but includes the bone, which adds extra flavor and helps the meat stay tender and moist while cooking. Found at the rear end of the loin chops, the tenderloin is a long, slender, and boneless piece of meat that takes well to rubs and marinades and can be sliced at an angle after cooking to create medallions. Feeling Salty?

Sometimes a little salt and pepper is all you need to make the natural flavors of pork (or any other meat or veg) shine. When only using a few ingredients, it’s all the more important to select the best, so stick with ones like these that are truly worth their salt.

Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt

This kitchen staple is formed with a craft evaporation process that creates coarse, hollow, multifaceted salt crystals trusted by top chefs, including ours! Prized for its purity, this versatile seasoning has 53% less sodium than table salt and is perfect for cooking, brining, and finishing.

Khave Himalayan Pink Salt

Pink salt crystals get their hue from trace minerals—84 of them in Khave’s case! Ethically hand-harvested with no additives, this heritage seasoning can add nuanced flavor and extra dimension to many a recipe. Find it in fine, coarse, or flake varieties depending on your needs.

Le Saunier De Camargue Fleur de Sel

French for “flower of salt,” fleur de sel has been harvested by hand from saltwater ponds since ancient times. Known for its delicate crystal shape and crunchy texture (which the cork top helps preserve), this stunning salt is ideal for finishing dishes with flavor, texture, and visual flair.

Maldon Sea Salt Flakes

Hand-harvested from evaporated seawater near the British town of Maldon since 1882, these stunning, pyramid-shaped sea salt flakes are soft and crunchy with a beautiful balance of minerals that create a clean taste and texture fantastic for finishing pork, steak, and so much more.

Fresh to Market Brine Mix

Enhance your pork’s flavor and tenderness with this convenient, all-purpose brining blend from our spice aisle featuring the perfect ratio of Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt, brown sugar, orange peel, lemon peel, black peppercorns, rosemary, thyme, sage, garlic, and bay leaf. It’s brine time!

Grilling Tips for Perfect Pork

• Pick a pork that’s prized by chefs like our Fresh to Market 100% Berkshire Kurobuta Pork , a sustainably raised heirloom breed renowned for its fantastic flavor, deep color, and top-notch tenderness.

• Cook pork to an internal temperature of 145°F for medium-rare.

• Choose bone-in cuts (like rib chops, baby back ribs, or St. Louis ribs) for more flavor.

• For lean cuts like the pork loin or tenderloin, cook hot and fast over direct heat to sear the outside.

• For fattier cuts like pork shoulder/butt or ribs, smoke or roast low and slow to make the meat extra tender.

• If grilling over an open flame, watch out for flare-ups from the drippings.

• Let cooked pork rest 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Bring on the Beef

When it comes to barbecuing beef, popular picks like the ribeye, T-bone, and top sirloin are all well and good, but have you tried a picanha? You don’t have to spend a lot to get great results! Raise the steaks this summer with a few less-common cuts you’ll wish you tried grilling sooner.

This flavorful cut popular in Brazilian cuisine has a hearty fat cap that adds to its robust taste. Sear fast for a crisp crust and tender, juicy center.

This lean cut is generally thin and flat. Try tenderizing it with a marinade for extra flavor or cutting it even thinner and stuffing with flavorful fillings.

Flank Steak
Picanha Steak

Hanger Steak

The only good way to be hangry (hungry for hanger!), this coveted cut is known for its flavor and tenderness and gets even better when cooked at a high temperature.

Skirt Steak

A classic for fajitas, this cut is a prime candidate for all sorts of marinades. Cook on high heat for a short time, then slice thin against the grain.

Grilling Tips for Better Beef

• Choose high-quality beef that will taste good no matter the cut, like our Fresh to Market Beef, Certified Piedmontese, or First Light Wagyu

• Feel free to salt your beef before it hits the grill, but since pepper burns, add that after grilling.

• To make diamond grill marks, position your steak at a 10 o’clock position on the grill, then at a 2 o’clock position. Flip it and repeat.

• Use tongs to flip your steaks, as forks can pierce the meat and let the flavorful juices escape.

• Follow this internal temperature scale for your desired doneness:

• 120–125°F for rare

• 130–135°F for medium-rare

• 140–145°F for medium

• 150–155°F for medium-well

• 160–165°F for well done

• Cook to just below your desired temperature to allow for carryover cooking.

• Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing.

Grilling Tips for Brilliant Burgers

• If making your own patties, start by choosing a good grind. This means a quality beef brand (like Fresh to Market or Certified Piedmontese) that’s about 80% lean and 20% fat for just the right amount of juiciness.

• Season to your liking, then shape into patties with a diameter larger than your chosen buns (as the meat will shrink) and up to an inch thick. Ensure all patties are similar in size for even cooking.

• Grill to your desired doneness over medium-high heat with the barbecue lid open, flipping patties only once.

• Avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking, as this will cause the fat to seep out and dry out the meat.

• If making cheeseburgers, add your cheese after flipping the patties about a minute before they’re done.

• For extra taste appeal, toast the cut-side of your buns on the grill just before serving.

PREP TIME: 5 MINUTES, PLUS 12 HOURS CHILLING

YIELD: 11 COCKTAILS

INGREDIENTS

• 1 bottle (750 mL) gin

• 4 ounces dry vermouth

• 4 ounces filtered water

• Garnish of choosing (lemon twist, olive, cocktail onion, etc.)

For storage, secure jar or bottle top and return remaining martini to the freezer to keep it chilled until the next serving.

Strange Nature Gin

This is one of our favorite gins, partly because it’s a truly upcycled product—it’s grape-based! The base spirit comes from a de-alcoholized New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. DIY

Easy Ice Cream Waffle Sandwich

1. If you want your St. Pierre Waffles (or cookies from our Bakery) ever-so-slightly warm to make the ice cream pleasantly melty, heat two waffles up per desired amount of sandwiches in the toaster oven before Step 2.

2. Set out one waffle and scoop about ¼ cup of ice cream on top. Gently spread the ice cream to the waffle’s edges with the back of the scoop or a butter knife.

3. Top the ice cream with our Fresh to Market Sea Salt Caramel Cream—it adds a deeper sweet note to pretty much any flavor!

4. Put the other waffle on top, repeat for however many sandwiches you’re making, and enjoy!

Pro Tip

For extra-easy ice cream without the scoop (especially if you’re making these for a crowd), just cut slices directly through the frozen 1-pint container to make pucks, then peel off the rim of the packaging before placing it on the waffle. You can make about four pucks per pint.

Jeni’s Ice Cream
