Welcome to Nuffield's 50th year

NUFFIELD HELLO

50 years ago Nuffield was opened by founding patron, Dame Sybil Thorndike.

Back then it was a university theatre and predominantly home to local theatre companies. 50 years on Nuffield has grown beyond all recognition and are marking this milestone with the appointment of four Associate Actors: Samantha Bond, Laura Carmichael, Tom Hiddleston and Celia Imrie. Each has personal links to the area or theatre and will be an important part of our journey as we move forward.

For a season which looks forward to the next 50 years, it is fitting that new work plays a strong part as we strengthen our commitment to creating work in spaces which surprise and inspire you, our audience. With this in mind the season begins with our latest commissioned play, The Saints, already in rehearsal, which charts the peaks and troughs of being a Southampton Football Club fan.

The production headlines our summer festival, Art at the Heart, which takes place in our new pop-up, open air venue, Nuffield Playing Field in Guildhall Square this August.

Our second commission is an adaptation by Oliver Birch of Michael Morpurgo’s short story, The Best Christmas Present in the World, performed by Hampshire Youth Theatre, and commemorating the start of the First World War in this centenary year.

Almost a century after the famous Christmas truce of 1914 and the football match in no-man's land between the British and the Germans, a soldier's letter is found by chance in an antique desk – “Jim's Last Letter: to be buried with me when the time comes.”

And thus begins the quest to find “Dearest Connie”.

To commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, Hampshire Youth Theatre present a brand new adaptation of this work by War Horse author, Michael Morpurgo.

In a frozen land far away, the Snow Queen kidnaps a young boy named Kai. His best friend Gerda, a stumpy, grumpy and determined little girl is the unlikely hero who sets out to rescue him. On the way, she finds friends who will help her, and the truth behind the mysterious Snow Queen's identity and why she lives locked up in solitude in her icy palace.

This brand new adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale is written by multi award–winning comedy writer, Georgia Pritchett, who has written for Miranda, The Thick of It, Have I Got News For You, Veep and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Experiment Experiment is the new quarterly performance night at Nuffield, offering an insight into a range of exciting new pieces of theatre in the early stages of development. 451: All the Right Words in the Right Order A bi-monthly showcase of local, national and international spoken word. Apples and Snakes brings some of the best poetic and performance talent to Nuffield and gives local poets the opportunity to shine behind the mic. Expect poetry and performances that enlighten, entertain and leap off the page and stage.

This new series features some of today’s best fiction writers, poets, non-fiction writers and playwrights reading from their work and talking about the writing life: how characters take shape, where ideas come from.

Led by creative writing lecturers at the University of Southampton, Writers in Conversation takes place on Monday nights in Nuffield Kitchen, helping to create an evening that is relaxed but engaging and intelligent yet informal.

NUFFIELD LOCATION

Train Southampton Airport Parkway and Southampton Central are both a 15 minute bus or taxi ride from the theatre.

Parking After 17.00 and on weekends all car parks are free to use.

All car parks are for permit holders before 17.00 on weekdays. There is a pay and display visitor car park for use during this time with very limited parking spaces.

NUFFIELD KITCHEN

Nuffield Kitchen serves delicious food in a contemporary setting.

Pop in for coffees, home-made cakes and snacks, relax over lunch or enjoy a pre-show meal. Our licensed bar is open during performances, offering a range of light snacks.

We are pleased to work with Uptons, the award winning butchers, to offer free range produce served to the highest standard. Our wine is supplied by Bibendum, winners of the Drinks Company of the Year 2013 at the Drinks Business Awards.
