Anti-Terror Law gags RS campus journos
Errors in modules cause education struggle
by EDJOP MEDADO
Gusa Regional Science High School – X (GRSHS – X) campus journalists expressed threat to freedom of speech with President Rodrigo Duterte’s enactment of Anti-Terrorism Bill to Anti-Terrorism Act.
by DANICA FABRO As the Department of Education (DepEd) started the school year with blended learning, students and parents nationwide voiced out struggles pertaining to error-ridden learning modules (LMs); this and other concerns are resolved by the school.
With broad offenses such as inciting others to commit terrorism through “speeches, writings, proclamations, emblems, banners, and other representations tending to the same end,” the Republic Act 11479 restricts GRSHS –X campus journalists’ right of dissent in a bid to not be tagged as a “terrorist.” “Di parehas sa una, karon nga naa na gyud tay batas nga pwede ta itudlo nga terorista tungod lang kay nagsturya ta, gakalimitahan ang atong freedom of speech and right of dissent (It’s different now. With an actual law that may brand us as terrorists for simply speaking up, our freedom of speech and right of dissent is being limited.),” stated Janicah Mira-ato, a feature writer. Moreover, the recent shutdown of the nation’s biggest broadcaster ABS – CBN last May, stirred more fear, with some campus journalists pointing the said incident as a blatant attack to press freedom. “Klaro na kaayo kay, pag shutdown palang daan sa ABS, mura na sad to siya og pag shutdown sa tingog sa mga tao nga naay ikasulti sa gobyerno (The ABS – CBN shutdown was a clear message that Filipinos who speak up against the government are being silenced),” expressed TV broadcasting video journalist, Francis Ordeniza. The journalist also added that he had no problem with a law against terrorism as long as it was made specific “who the terrorists are,” leaving no room for red-tagging.

on rising suicide incidents
CDO-LGU, RS admin raise mental health plight by JAMES PUNSALAN With rising cases of students having severe psychological related problems, CDOLGU and Gusa Regional Science High School – X admin boost awareness for mental health over the pandemic.
Statistics from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that suicide incidents increased to 25.7 percent in 2020 with most of the incidents were from the age range of 12-30 years old, which includes students. “We believe that suicide cases are not just a mental health problem but a social problem as well,” City Councilor Edgar Cabanlas said on an interview. Student-researchers of GRSHS-X studied the answers of Grade 11 students in the surveys they developed on Mental Health. According to the grade 12 researcher, the results showed poor results due to the modular learning system. “Of course, it is hard maintaining good mental health and good grades in this type of learning, the bar is set very high for us to reach,” said grade 11 respondent Christine Kionisala. Institution head Charlyn Baylon expressed in an interview “The guidance counselor is doing her best to reach out so that students are not burdened so much.” Quarterly online check-ups are also done by the student body to know the students’ struggles with the said type of learning.
