Welcome
This is your guide to the facilities and support available to you as a Business School student.
The Business School is a purpose-built facility designed with you in mind. From social areas to silent study spaces, the School is full of dedicated facilities just for you.
Many Business School students will also have classes in the Frederick Douglass Centre, so we have also highlighted some of the facilities in this building.

Building access
The School access system is built around your SMARTCARD. Entry to the building and certain rooms require you to scan your smartcard to gain access.

Main reception
Located on the ground floor of the Business School and Frederick Douglass Centre, reception staff are available Monday - Friday, 08:30 - 17:00, to help you deal with the following types of queries:

The Business School café is located on the ground floor of the Business School
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday 09:00 - 14:30 (term time only)
Additional catering facilities can be found in the USB café which is open 08:0015:00 Monday to Friday and The Catalyst café which is open 8:30 - 15:00 Monday to Friday.

Careers and Employability
The Business School based Careers and Employability Team are dedicated to providing careers support throughout your studies and beyond
We offer a variety of events, activities and information sessions you can access virtually, on-demand and in-person.
One-to-one support
Career guidance appointments are available in person or online with our Careers Consultants and Placement and Study Abroad Team to discuss everything from career planning to placements, and can be made by visiting MyCareer ncl ac uk

For information on everything relating to your career, including details of events, skills sessions, workshops, competitions and hiring opportunities, check out our Careers and Employability Canvas pages You can also chat to us at the Career Hub, located next to the main reception area, every weekday during term time between 11:00 and 13:00.

Study spaces
Not all students will be able to study comfortably from home or their bedroom. We have over 1,800 study spaces available on campus which are quiet and safe to study in Visit our webpages for more information
Libraries
You can find out more about library resources on campus here If you are looking to return library books, you can drop them off at the library facilities or the drop off point on the ground floor of the Frederick Douglass Centre.

IT clusters
There are PCs available in the three IT clusters; 1.01, 3.03 and 4.03. Additional PC spaces are available in the Frederick Douglass Centre on levels 1 and 2.
Bloomberg terminals
Bloomberg terminals are located in the IT cluster 4.03.

Quick print zone
The Business School’s quick print facilities are available in Room 1.02 and allow for quick access to the internet and your desktop, allowing you to print relevant material before lectures and seminars Please remember to only use the PCs and printers which are marked for use.
The Hub and The Hub quiet study space
Your student social space ‘The Hub’ is in room 5.07. For silent study, The Hub quiet study space in room 5 08 has PC facilities and study stations for personal laptops

You will find the Student Reception on the ground floor reception. A member of the Education Team will be available in reception between 09:00 - 17:00 (MondayFriday during term time) to answer any queries you may have Outside these hours

Health and safety
The health and safety of all students is a joint responsibility of the School and the student body. You will receive a policy document that will cover the key areas to ensure your safety.
We request that you adhere to our health and safety procedures.
Electrical safety
All plugs and adapters must conform to British standard BS1363. Students must ensure when purchasing items online they meet the required standard You should find this marking on the back of the plug or adapter

Fire safety
Evacuation procedures
Please ensure you familiarise yourself with the School’s evacuation procedures which are displayed in all teaching and social spaces.
You can also see the full evacuation procedure in our Health and Safety Policy, available from main reception.
Business School evacuation procedure
Yellow alert:
A voice message will say: "This is a yellow alert, you do not have to evacuate the building, please standby for further instructions" This indicates that the cause of alarm is being investigated If the alarm stops, the situation has been dealt with.
Continuous alarm:
When a continuous fire alarm is heard, occupants must evacuate immediately using the nearest fire exit and proceed to the designated assembly area.
Additionally, if the fire alarm is activated out of office hours it will sound continuously. If you have mobility problems and need assistance during fire alarms, please wait at a life lobby area on floors 1-8

Frederick Douglass evacuation procedure
You will hear voice recorded message which instructs you to leave the building. Fire wardens will lead you out of the building to safety via the nearest safe exit to the assembly point

University Security and Police Officers patrol the grounds on a regular basis and can answer any queries you may have.

Safezone App
We encourage all students to download and 'check in' to the SafeZone App whilst on campus This is a free app that connects you directly to the University Security Team should you need help. The on-campus Security Team will be alerted of your situation and location so that they can co-ordinate the help you need quickly to ensure your safety on campus.

A guide to our facilities
Food and drink
Food can be consumed in the Business School Café and student social areas located in room 5.07 (all students) and room 7.11 (for PGR students and staff). Eating is not permitted in meeting rooms, IT clusters, or teaching rooms. All drinks should be in bottles with screw-capped tops and all rubbish must be removed when you are finished with it.
Boiling water for hot drinks is available in The Hub 5 07 and The Hub quiet study space 5 08
Drinks fountains are located on the ground floor in the café area and on levels 2 and 4.

Recycling bins
These are provided for paper, plastic bottles, other plastics and cans There are also a number of general waste bins.
Bike storage
A bicycle store is available inside the building in room G 10 and is accessible from the side entrance (G 10 is smartcard controlled). Bikes should not be stored for longer than 48 hours.
Staff make regular checks of the bicycle store and any bikes left longer than the permitted time will be removed Please do not leave your bicycle locked to the railings outside of the main entrance.
