Winds Of Affinity

Composed by Wang Chenwei

Yuán (缘) is an untranslatable Chinese term roughly meaning an affinity between people or a destinedcoincidence TheChinesetitleDíYuán(笛缘)meansayuánofflutes Thispiecewas composed by Wang Chenwei in 2016 as a commission by Tan Qinglun, who premiered Dí Yuán with his teacher Prof Zhan Yongming, where the piece celebrates the yuán between studentandteacher Yuáncanbefoundinmanyformswherethetwosoloistsofthisconcert, GabrielleWooandSongYipingbothjoinedNTUChineseOrchestraatthesametime.Bothof thembondedtogetherovertimethroughpractices, sectionaloutingsandpassionfortheDizi The piece begins slowly, representing a chance encounter that gradually blossoms into friendship. The increasing tempo leads into a fugue in Chinese style – an intellectual discourse among the instruments. After the fugue’s stretto, the two flutes play interlocking semiquaver patterns while the orchestra takes over the main melody, leading to a whirlwindlike cadenza. The slow section is recapitulated, like a reminiscence of the past. Finally, the twoflutesplayinunisonandfadeouttogether, atestamenttoeverlastingyuán.

Xishuangbanna is located in the southwestern part of Yunnan Province, where ethnic minorities such as the Dai people have lived for over 2,000 years With its picturesque landscapes, beautiful environment, and simple yet vibrant local culture, Xishuangbanna exudes a strong tropical charm. This piece portrays the stunning natural scenery of Xishuangbanna and the joyful lives of the people in its border villages The composition is divided into three movements: The Golden Autumn Sunset, Love Song in the Sunset and BonfireAftertheSunset.

In this concert, we will be performing the first movement, The Autumn Sunset, and the third movement,BonfireAftertheSunset.

Along the Yili River

Composed by He Zhanhao

Composed by He Zhanhao, this piece is based on Xinjiang folk songs and is composed using a single-theme variation technique The lively allegro, with elements of a rondo, portrays a vibrant and jubilant song-and-dance scene, while the lyrical and graceful adagio depicts young lovers strolling along the Yili river at dusk The exquisite composition fully showcases the artistic expressivenessoftheguzhengensemble.

Butterfly Lovers

Composed by He Zhanhao & Chen Gang

Based on the ancient Chinese folktale of “The Butterfly Lovers”, this music is adapted from tunes of Yue Opera in Zhejiang Province The three main sections of the original folk tale tell of the making of sworn brothers at Cao Qiao, Zhu Ying Tai’s refusal of an arranged marriage and the reincarnation of lovers as butterflies by their graves These three sections are presented in sonata form – exposition, developmentandrecapitulationoftheconcerto.Theexpositiondepictsasceneofsunshineandgentle breeze, with the violin entering on a simple and beautiful love theme An exchange between different instruments represents the friendship between Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai (the latter impersonating a male) , who eventually become sworn brothers at Cao Qiao A subsequent lively allegro depicts the three happy years of the “brothers” studying together, while a lento section shows their reluctant parting at a pavilion In the development section of the work, the orchestra and violin play contrasting themes to express Zhu Ying Tai’s bitterness and her strong sentiments in defying a marriagearrangedbyherfather.ALentopassagedepictsthemeetingbetweenthelovers.Thereafter, the mood of the music changes abruptly A scintillating passage inspired by daoban rhythms from Beijing opera and xiaoban from Yue opera, illustrating Zhu Ying Tai’s sad disposition at Liang Shan Bo’s grave All ends well when the lovers are eventually reincarnated as a pair of butterflies Together, they flutter into the sky with newfound freedom, while the original love theme on the violin reappears, payingtributetotheireverlastinglove
