uenas olas, cálidas aguas, una gran comunidad de surfistas y constantes concursos de surf, son algunas de las actividades de los más de 307 kilómetros de playas de la franja costera de la Riviera Nayarit. Desde Nuevo Vallarta hasta San Blas podrás encontrar más de 20 puntos para practicar el surf los 365 días del año. Sayulita, San Pancho, Punta de Mita, La Lancha, Punta Burros, La Caleta, El Anclote, Stoner, Las Rocas, Los Veneros, son algunas de las playas más populares para practicar este deporte por ofrecer olas de nivel internacional. Las olas del destino son medianas, con alturas máximas de entre cuatro y seis metros, dependiendo la marejada y la zona. Predominantemente

hay “beachbreaks” en la mayoría de las playas nayaritas, en San Blas por ejemplo, la temporada de olas comienza de abril a octubre, por las corrientes del sur, y en invierno de San Pancho a Punta de Mita, por las corrientes del norte. “Tenemos varias olas de primera categoría, en Matanchen y Las Islitas, que tuvieron su máximo auge en los años 70’s, se dan olas largas que recorren hasta un kilómetro. Está catalogada como una de las olas más bonitas a nivel mundial”, expresó José Manuel Cano Guerrero, campeón nacional de surf en todas las categorías, quien practica este deporte desde los 5 años. Con 35 años de experiencia en el deporte del surf, José Manuel, comparte su experiencia en estas playas de acuerdo a su grado de dificultad.

CARTA EDITORIAL // Editor’s note “El mar, una vez que te hechiza, te engancha en su maravillosa red para toda la eternidad” J. Cousteau En nuestra 5ta edición rendimos homenaje a uno de los mayores tesoros que existe sobre la faz de la Tierra: el océano. Nuestros mares, origen de la vida y sus misterios, cubren más del 70% de la superficie de nuestro planeta y contienen el 99% de su biodiversidad. La existencia de la humanidad depende de ellos, por lo cual es nuestra obligación ocuparnos de mantenerlos sanos; hoy más que nunca, cuando fenómenos como la sobre pesca, la contaminación y el cambio climático están yendo demasiado lejos, las labores para la conservación de la vida marina son urgentes.

THE LIST Vol. 5 presenta el programa completo del evento Punta Sayulita Surf Classic, así como artículos interesantes sobre los proyectos comunitarios relacionados.

Y así como el océano es fuente de vida, también ha sido fuente de inspiración para el ser humano desde tiempos inmemoriales, y como muestra: el surf.

Por si fuera poco, THE LIST incluye una selección de las experiencias de viaje más atractivas, así como recomendaciones que serán muy útiles para obtener un provecho máximo del esplendor natural de Nayarit y de sus perspectivas cosmopolitas.

Entonces, con el ánimo de llamar la atención de nuestros lectores sobre el tema central de la revista, aprovechamos para dar la bienvenida al 5to Torneo Anual Punta Sayulita Surf Classic. Este maravilloso evento de fin de semana, considerado como uno de los más importantes campeonatos internacionales de surf y stand-up paddle en América del Norte, recauda fondos para proyectos ambientales y educativos, e incluye competencias de longboard, stand-up paddle surf, carreras SUP élite y de distancia.

Buena suerte a todos los competidores que estarán surcando las olas sobre sus tablas de surf durante los próximos días, y bienvenidos sean los visitantes que decidan sumergirse en la magia de Nayarit.

En nombre de la comunidad turística de Punta Sayulita, la Secretaría de Turismo de la Riviera Nayarit junto con nuestros generosos patrocinadores, competidores, voluntarios, y los residentes de Sayulita, les damos la bienvenida a la hermosa Sayulita para el 5º Torneo Anual Punta Sayulita Classic. El Punta Sayulita Classic es un evento deportivo que celebra el “Espíritu Aloha” del surf competitivo. Y además, el evento sirve como una oportunidad anual para crear conciencia sobre la protección y el respeto de nuestro medio ambiente. Ahora en su 5a edición el Punta Sayulita Classic ha evolucionado a un gran evento que supera todo lo que nos esperábamos, y gracias a los fondos recaudados por nuestros generosos patrocinadores corporativos, donaciones privadas, ventas de camisetas y gorras, inscripciones a la competencia y demás fuentes, desde el 2009 hemos sido capaces de mantener con eficacia el programa Reef Check EcoDiver en las áreas de Sayulita y Bahía de Banderas, donde a la fecha han capacitado a más de 40 buzos certificados EcoDivers y se han patrocinado clases de educación ambiental para niños de primaria y secundaria. ¿Qué sigue en la agenda del programa Reef Check? Además de mantener y aumentar el número de buzos EcoDivers capacitados para llevar acabo estudios más frecuentes, durante todo el año, en los arrecifes y en lugares nuevos, hemos iniciado una relación con el Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas para tener el entrenamiento para buzos EcoDiver Reef Check disponible para la totalidad de sus estudiantes de Biología Marina como una materia opcional y así asegurar el mantenimiento continuo de nuestro equipo de EcoDivers voluntarios. El programa también se está expandiendo para incluir el proyecto que implemente el proceso de formación de un “Jardín de Coral” como un proyecto de restauración, donde el coral será trasplantado a lugares de fácil acceso para que cualquiera pueda disfrutar de la experiencia de bucear en un lugar tranquilo y aprenda acerca de los arrecifes de coral y los vea crecer. Por último, los fondos recaudados con el Punta Sayulita Classic también se destinan a los programas para el desarrollo de los niños de la Fundación Punta Sayulita, que apoyan directamente a los estudiantes de Sayulita con programas de arte y música, programas de educación ambiental y programas de deportes acuáticos en desarrollo como el surf y stand-up paddling. Nuestros océanos son un lugar verdaderamente mágico y uno de los mejores parques recreativos para el disfrute de todos. Es nuestro deber como ciudadanos del planeta Tierra el servir como guardianes de nuestro medio ambiente. Esperamos que disfruten del Espíritu Aloha durante ésta 5ta edición del Torneo Anual Punta Sayulita Classic y buena suerte a todos nuestros competidores. Hola! On behalf of the Punta Sayulita resort community, the Riviera Nayarit Tourism Board along with our other generous sponsors, competitors, event volunteers, as well as the residents of Sayulita, we welcome you to beautiful Sayulita for the 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. The Punta Sayulita Classic is a sporting event that celebrates the “aloha spirit” of surfing with competition. And moreover, the event serves as an annual occasion to raise awareness for the protection and respect of our environment. Now in its 5th year, the Punta Sayulita Classic has truly evolved into an event larger than any of us ever expected and because of the funds raised from our generous corporate sponsors, private donations, t-shirt and hat sales, competitor registrations and other sources, since 2009 we have been able to effectively sustain the Reef Check EcoDiver program for the Sayulita/Bay of Banderas Area which to date has trained more than 40 certified EcoDivers and provided for environmental educational classes for local primary and secondary schoolchildren. What’s next on the Reef Check program agenda? In addition to maintaining and growing the number of trained EcoDivers to perform reef surveys more routinely throughout the year and at additional survey locations, we have initiated a relationship with the Instituto Tecnologico de Bahia de Banderas to make Reef Check EcoDiver training available to all of their marine biology students as an elective to ensure that we continue maintain our volunteer team of EcoDivers. The program is also expanding to include the process of forming a “Coral Garden” restoration project whereby coral will be transplanted to easy to reach locations so that anyone can enjoy the experience of snorkeling in a calm location to learn about coral reefs and see actual coral grow. Finally, proceeds raised from the Punta Sayulita Classic are also awarded to the Punta Sayulita Foundation’s children development programs which directly support schoolchildren of Sayulita with art & music programs, environmental education programs and watersports programs such as surfing and stand-up paddling development programs. Our oceans are truly a magical place and one of the finest playgrounds for all of us to enjoy. It is our duty as citizens of the planet Earth to serve as the stewards of our environment. We hope you enjoy the aloha spirit of the 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic and good luck to all of our competitors. Al igual que ustedes, amamos al océano, no sólo por las maravillosas olas, sino también por toda la increíble vida marina que ayuda a mantener sano a nuestro planeta. Desde 1997 Reef Check ha estado trabajando con comunidades locales en más de 90 países educando a niños y adultos sobre el valor de la vida marina, las amenazas a la salud de los océanos y las soluciones a estos problemas. Nuestro programa principal es “aprendizaje de inmersión”. Nuestro objetivo principal es hacer que todos entren al agua con un visor y un snorkel para que vean por sí mismos la majestuosa belleza de la vida marina y aprendan cómo todos los organismos están conectados entre sí y con nosotros. En el 2013, capacitamos a unos 20 buzos voluntarios locales en los métodos de “Reef Check EcoDiver” y ellos llevaron a cabo una serie de conteos de peces y moluscos que viven en los arrecifes rocosos cerca de Sayulita y las islas del litoral para monitorear su estado de salud. Estudiantes de biología marina del Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas se han unido a nuestros equipos de entrenamiento y estudio “Reef Check”. Además de los programas de educación, estamos activamente involucrados en la conservación marina. Estamos trabajando con las cooperativas de pescadores ayudando a diseñar programas de pesca sustentable y Áreas Marinas Protegidas para que todos tengamos abundancia de peces, abulón y langostas para consumir ahora y en el futuro. Con su apoyo, vamos a seguir ampliando nuestros programas de educación en ciencias marinas en las escuelas marinas en toda la bahía. The Reef Check Foundation is very honored to again partner with Punta Sayulita for the 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Punta Sayulita for their strong support for the environment, and for doing the “right thing” not just saying the “right” words. Like you, we love the ocean, not only for the amazing waves but also for all the incredible marine life that helps to keep our planet healthy. Since 1997, Reef Check has been working with local communities in over 90 countries to educate kids and adults about the value of marine life, threats to ocean health and solutions to these problems. By participating in the 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic you are all helping to support our efforts here in Mexico to take good care of our ocean resources. Our core program is “immersion learning.” Our goal is to get everyone into the water with a mask and snorkel to see for themselves the majestic beauty of marine life and learn how all the organisms are connected to each other and to us. In 2013, we trained about 20 local volunteer scuba divers in the Reef Check EcoDiver methods and they carried out a series of surveys of fish and shellfish living on rocky reefs near Sayulita and offshore islands to track their health. Marine biology students from the Instituto Tecnologico de Bahia de Banderas have joined our Reef Check training and survey teams. In addition to education, we are actively involved in marine conservation. We are working with fishermen’s cooperatives to help design sustainable fishing programs and Marine Protected Areas so that we all have plenty of fish, abalone and lobster to eat now and in the future. With your support, we will also continue to expand our programs of marine science education in the local schools around the Bay. If you would like to get involved, please contact us. ace 5 años comencé a visitar Sayulita frecuentemente y en una de esas visitas, mientras surfeaba con amigos, surgió la idea de una competencia de surf por invitación para crear conciencia sobre el cambio ambiental y 5 años después con la asociación y el apoyo de la comunidad residencial de Punta Sayulita es maravilloso ver como el Punta Sayulita Classic se ha convertido en un evento reconocido internacionalmente que continúa transmitiendo el mensaje de conciencia ambiental.

It was 5 years ago when I started frequently visiting Sayulita and during one of my visits the idea for an invitational surf contest to help raise awareness for environmental change came about while surfing with friends. And 5 years later with the partnership and support of the Punta Sayulita resort community it is amazing to see how the Punta Sayulita Classic has grown into internationally recognized event that continues to communicate the message of environmental awareness.

La fundación ECO-Warrior se estableció en 2006 y pretende crear conciencia y cambio en un mundo ambientalmente sensible a través de educación, conocimiento y participación en la preservación de nuestro ambiente manteniendo limpios los océanos y las playas. La fundación ECO-Warrior inspira y guía a las generaciones mas jóvenes para vivir un estilo de vida mas sano para ellos y para el planeta. Preservamos los océanos y las playas mediante activismo, educación y trabajo con mentores, los tres pilares de la Fundación ECO-Warrior. Con esto despertamos la curiosidad de los niños y hacemos que se interesen en el cuidado de los ambientes en los que viven y en los que pueden ocupar durante su vida.

The ECO-Warrior Foundation was founded in 2006 and aims to bring about awareness and change in an environmentally sensitive world through education, knowledge and participation in preserving our environment while keeping the oceans and beaches clean. The ECO-Warrior Foundation inspires and guides younger generations in living a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the earth. We preserve oceans and beaches through activism, education and mentoring, the three pillars of The ECO-Warrior Foundation. Through this, we lead children to be more curious and interested in safekeeping of environments in which they live and may enter during their lifetimes.

Uno de los placeres más grandes en la Fundación ECO-Warrior es trabajar con la siguiente generación de ECO-Warriors a través de eventos basados en la comunidad y me da mucha emoción regresar a Sayulita para el 5º Torneo Anual Punta Sayulita Classic. Este año estamos haciendo una variedad de cosas, otra vez, siendo anfitriones de la limpieza de playa y el simposio educativo con clases de ECO-arte para niños y también con una clínica de Surf/SUP para que todos los niños del pueblo la disfruten. Además, ansío otorgar el premio Power of Change (el Poder del Cambio) a los ganadores del concurso de ensayo de este año.

One of our biggest joys at the ECO-Warrior Foundation is working with the next generation of ECO-Warriors through our community-based events and I am excited to return back to Sayulita for the 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. This year we are mixing it up again with hosting a beach clean-up and educational symposium with children’s ECO-art classes as well as a Surfing/SUP clinic for all of the kids in town to enjoy. Moreover, I look forward to awarding this year’s Power of Change award to the winners of this year’s essay writing contest.

“If you were President, what would you do to protect our oceans and beaches from pollution? Propósito:

Purpose:

El propósito de este concurso de ensayos es crear conciencia y cambios en un mundo ambientalmente sensible, inspirando a nuestras nuevas generaciones para ser más curiosos e interesados en resguardar los ambientes en los que viven y en los que puedan aparecer durante el transcurso de sus vidas. El tema de nuestro concurso de ensayos motiva a los niños a mirar su vida diaria para reconocer las diferentes maneras en las que pueden contribuir a la preservación de nuestras playas y océanos para un mejor futuro, así como para examinar el significado de lo que significa “ser verde”.

The purpose of this essay contest is to bring awareness and change in an environmentally sensitive world by inspiring our younger generation to be more curious and interested in safekeeping the environments in which they live and may enter during their lifetimes. The topic of our essay contest encourages children to look at their day-to-day lives to recognize the different ways that they can and do contribute to a preserving our oceans and beaches for tomorrow as well as to examine what it means to ‘ be green’.

El concurso está abierto para alumnos en las siguientes categorías: para Primaria serán los grados 4°, 5° y 6°; para Secundaria: 1°, 2° y 3°.

The essay contest is open to students in the following categories: Grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.

Habrá un ensayo ganador por categoría además de que se premiara al 2do y 3er lugar de cada categoría igualmente. Los ensayos deben tener un mínimo de 300 palabras y podrán ser presentadas en inglés o español y deberán ser entregados en la Casa de Playa de Punta Sayulita a más tardar el 28 de Febrero de 2014 para ser considerados. Los ensayos ganadores serán publicados en la página web de “ECOWarrior Foundation”, serán compartidos en las plataformas sociales de la fundación y por medio de un boletín vía correo electrónico. Habrá paquetes con premios para los finalistas.

At least one winning submission will be chosen from each category and their essays will be published on The ECO-Warrior Foundation website as well as shared across the foundation’s social media platforms and email newsletter. Essays must be minimum 300 words and can be submitted in either English or Spanish. All Essays should be delivered to the Punta Sayulita Beach House no later than February 28, 2014 for consideration. omo surfista profesional anteriormente rankeado dentro de la clasificación mundial de ASP y participante de los X-Games de ESPN, Ryan Helm ha hecho una fuerte impresión en la siempre repleta escena de las carreras elite de standup para varones, ganando títulos como el Júpiter Fall Classic, Punta Sayulita Classic y subiendo al estrado de los ganadores en muchos otros eventos, incluyendo los Hennessy’s - WPA SUP Championships.

A previous ASP world rated professional surfer and ESPN X games competidor, Ryan Helm has come on strong in the ever-crowded elite men’s SUP racing scene, winning titles such as the Jupiter Fall Classic, Punta Sayulita Classic and making the podium at many more events, including the Hennessy’s - WPA SUP Championships.

¿Qué te trajo a México? Vine a Sayulita por el estilo de vida. Para mí, es el lugar perfecto para disfrutar la vida.

What brought you down to Mexico? I came to Sayulita for the lifestyle. For me it is a perfect place to enjoy life.

¿Cómo fue que terminaste en una tabla de SUP por primera vez? La primera vez que me subí a una tabla de SUP fue hace 8 años para rehabilitarme de una lesión de rodilla. Desde entonces ha sido parte de mi vida.

How did you end up on a SUP board the first time? I first got on a SUP 8 years ago to help rehab a knee injury. It´s been a part of my life ever since.

¿Cuánto tiempo has competido en el nivel elite de SUP? Este será mi tercer año viajando y compitiendo. Hasta este momento ha sido una gran experiencia.

You have been competing in the Punta Sayulita Surf Classic for the past 4 years, what do you think about this event? This is my favorite event in the world. I feel so lucky that it happens to be in my home town.

¿Tenías la meta de ser un campeón de SUP, o fue una progresión natural de simplemente ser un apasionado de este deporte? En realidad sucedió de manera natural. Había estado entrenando muy duro y eso me llevó a probar una carrera de SUP que resultó ser algo perfecto para mi.

Was it a goal of yours to be a top level SUP paddler, or was it a natural progression from simply being passionate about the sport? It really happened naturally. I had been training really hard and that just lead into giving sup race’s a try which wound up being a great fit for me.

¿Cómo es la escena del SUP en México actualmente? Es una escena sensacional. Representa lo mejor del SUP. Desde niños y principiantes hasta profesionales y veteranos, vemos tanta diversidad en el agua. Sayulita es simplemente un hermoso lugar para disfrutar el standup, es por eso que tantas personas se enamoran del deporte aquí.

What’s the Mexican SUP scene like at the moment? The scene is amazing…It really represents the best of SUP. From kids and first-timers to pros and veteran paddlers, we see so much diversity in the water. Sayulita is just a beautiful place to enjoy paddling, thats´ why so many people fall in love with this sport here. What’s new with your training this year? One new thing is having a speed coach device that gives heart rate, speed, and stroke rate, It really takes the guess work out of my workouts.

¿Cuáles son tus metas y sueños para el futuro? Ahora sólo estoy disfrutando de mi tiempo en mi casa en Sayulita. Haciendo stand up paddling, el surf, buceo y pesca. Es un lugar fácil de encontrar un buen ritmo de vida.

How long have you been competing at the elite level of SUP? This will be my third year traveling and competing. It’s been a great experience so far.

Has competido en el Punta Sayulita Surf Classic por los últimos 4 años ¿qué opinas de este evento? Es mi evento favorito en el mundo. Me siento muy afortunado de que se lleve a cabo donde vivo.

¿Qué hay de nuevo con tu entrenamiento este año? Un nuevo dispositivo de entrenador de velocidad que te muestra la frecuencia cardíaca, la velocidad y la frecuencia de brazada, que realmente me ahorra el trabajo de adivinar mis avances durante los entrenamientos.

What are your future goals and dreams? Right now I’m just enjoying my time at home in Sayulita. Paddle, surf, dive, fish. It’s an easy place to find a good life rhythm.

1.-¿Cuándo empezaste con el standup? Empecé a practicar standup hace aproximadamente 6 años cuando Svein el dueño de Starboard, me mandó ¡una de las primeras tablas de SUP hechas por Starboard! Y desde entonces me encantó, y ¡he tenido tantas oportunidades extraordinarias en el deporte!

Casi todo mi tiempo lo paso en el agua, surfeando, haciendo standup y windsurf y buceando. También entreno a diario practicando ejercicios como cross fit, natación y moto cross. ¡Para mi es importante siempre mezclar disciplinas y siempre divertirte haciendo las cosas que amas!

2.-¿Qué es lo mas difícil (hablando de habilidad física) en las carreras de standup?

Eres uno de los mejores participantes en carreras y surf en standup. ¿Te estás enfocando mas en una que en otra?

¡Las carreras de standup son un deporte que requiere mucho esfuerzo físico! Entrenar todo el año y las carreras de larga distancia exigen mucho desgate físico, pero te hacen mas sano y con mejor condición.

Disfruto mucho del surf en standup, pero he tenido muchas experiencias y oportunidades para viajar y llevar mas allá a mis propios limites físicos y mentales en las carreras de standup.

3.-¿Cuál es tu impresión general del Punta Sayulita Surf Classic?

El Punta Sayulita Surf Classic es un evento increíble, ¡pero la parte mas especiales la maravillosa gente del pueblo de surfistas y todo el talento juvenil en los deportes acuáticos! ¡Pero el evento casi alcanza estatus de estrella de rock! Se cuida a los atletas de principio a fin y todo esta muy organizado y es muy divertido. 4.- ¿Cómo te preparas para un evento como este? Platícanos un poco de tu entrenamiento.

1.- When did you start Sup-Riding? I started standup paddling about 6 years ago when Svein, the owner of Starboard, sent me one of the first Starboard Stand Up Paddle boards! I’ve loved it ever since, and have had so many great opportunities from the sport! 2.-What is the most diﬃcult thing (physically) about SUP racing? Stand Up Paddle racing a very physical demanding sport! The year round training and long distance races can be tough on the body, but only makes it more healthy and fit. 3.-What’s your overall impression of Punta Sayulita Surf Classic? The Punta Sayulita Surf Classic is an amazing event, but the most special part about it is the wonderful people from the surf town and all of the young water sports talent! The event itself is almost rock star status! Athletes are taken care of from start to finish and everything is organized and fun as can be! 4.-How do you prepare yourself for an event like this? Give us a little insight into your training. I spend most of my time on the water surfing, Stand Up Paddling, windsurfing, and diving, so I am always staying busy and training! I also

My #1 heroes are my family! My father is a legend, an amazing person and athlete, and is 18x world champion windsurfer! My mom is the most loving and open-hearted woman in the world! 7.-Which athlete do you admire the most? Travis Pastrana and Greg Long could be my favorite athletes I look up to!

El wipeout mas grueso que he tenido fue probablemente en Waimea o Honolua Bay. Posiblemente Honolua porque esa vez salí lanzado por encima del borde y fui arrastrado sobre el arrecife. Salí con todo el costado desgarrado, de pecho a cadera. 9.-¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito para surfear en México? ¡Mi lugar favorito en México es Sayulita, pero me encanta surfear en Pascuales! No he estado en ningún otro lado, así que estoy seguro de que hay mucho mas que descubrir. 10.-¿Qué piensas de Sayulita y su comunidad? Sayulita es un maravilloso pueblito surfo, ¡todos surfean y todos tienen el “Espíritu de Aloha” y quieren pasarla bien! ¡También hay mucho talento local joven!

9.-What is your biggest Wipe Out? I have had a pretty fair share of wipeouts all over the place! The heaviest wipeout I have ever had was probably at Waimea or Honolua Bay! Honolua probably because that time I got thrown over the falls and dragged across the reef! I came up and my whole side was torn up, from nipple to my hip. 10.-What is your favorite spot to Surf in Mexico? My favorite place in Mexico is Sayulita, but I love to surf at Pascuales! I haven’t been anywhere else, so I’m sure there is much more to experience. 11.-What do you think about Sayulita and its community? Sayulita is a awesome little surf town, everyone surfs and everyone is filled with Aloha and looking to have a good time! There is so much young local talent as well!

8.-Who do you think is shaping the future for surfing today? The future of the sport of standup paddling is very bright. It is amazing how diverse the sport is and it is really cool to be apart of the growing sport!

Finalmente, en el histórico Puerto de San Blas, comenzó a funcionar la Marina San Blas, que con 17 embarcaderos con capacidad de 12 a 40 pies de eslora se integró en el corredor náutico Mar de Cortés.

Si es aficionado a la pesca, la Riviera es también un paraíso para este deporte, ya que la pesca deportiva a lo largo del litoral es reconocida a nivel mundial por, ostentar entre otros logros, dos récords mundiales, uno de peto, y otro para un pez espada con un peso de 322.2 kilos. Esto se debe al clima y condiciones marítimas, las cuales siempre son muy favorables, así como la abundante diversidad de especies que aquí habitan.

Fishing enthusiasts have found in the Riviera the perfect paradise for anglers, as sport fishing along the coastline is well-known around the world for its record-breaking catches, including two world records: one for wahoo and the other for a swordfish that weighed 322.2 kilos. This is all thanks to the climate and the water conditions, which are always very favorable, as well as the abundant diversity of species that call these waters home.

omme and Diego Mignot are cousins, not brothers, but whose names you’ll come hear synonymously, as if they were twins living parallel lives. Salt water runs deep in their veins as both were raised at sea and both have traveled extensively all around the world on sailboats. Along side their families, they have sailed and/ or surfed the waters of the South Pacific, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe, North America, and nearly every wave between Mazatlán and Puerto Escondido; they have come to know coastal Mexico like the back of their hand. Coming from a diverse international family, Diego was born in Paris and Nomme in Panamá. Diego’s father is

Argentinian, his mother French, and Nomme’s mother is Spanish, his father French. All of them carry as many passports as citizenships. They are all sailors and genuine Gypsies of the sea; cultivating these two kids to be true citizens of the world. In all the places they’ve come to know, their fast, strong, solid, rail to rail surfing, and progressive airs are capped with flawless style and were polished on the main beach of Sayulita, Nayarit--the closest place they call home outside of the water. Surfing in the presence of Tigre and Diego Cadena (4 times Mexican national champion), and Adan Hernández

DIEGO & NOMME (the best aerial surfer in Mexico), the Mignot cousins have quickly risen to the top ranks of local, national and international contests, and continue to climb up the pecking order wherever they go. They are on their 4th ASP pro junior season in Europe, and ranked in the top ten. ith a point break in front of her house that has groomed some of Mexico’s top professional surfers, it seems only a matter of time until Lola Mignot joins them in their rankings. Entering in local and regional tournaments from an early age and always earning a place on the winner’s podium, Lola’s competitive fire is what fuels her to seek out new and broader challenges. Already having a local reputation along the Pacific west coast of Mexico for being one of the best up-and-coming female long boarders, Lola is primed to chase the wave that will carry her to the pinnacle of competitive surfing.

She possesses a surfing style that is polished and refined well beyond her years. Born into a family of nomadic artisans who are always in search of a new adventure, Lola was instilled with the same zest for life. Her journey all began in Paris, but when only months old her family embarked upon a voyage that would take her across the world by a caravan of sailboats. The rhythm of the waves were some of Lola’s first influential imprints, as the water became her adoptive and only home. The ocean became her playground and provided endless joy and entertainment.

Live what you Love She is a person who is most at ease when connected with the water. Since she was a young girl Lola has always had a passion for dance and as she carves out her own identity apart from the boys, she shows a degree of grace and elegance not present in many. Her surfing style can be described as fluid and effortless in her ability to glide across the water with seamless movements. The surfboard and the waves are just another place for her to dance. The philosophy of life inculcated in Lola by her family is to Live what you Love, and it has taken many of them to great heights by simply following their passion and

dreams. Lola is now at a point in her life where she is ready to reach for what she knows best, for what she loves most - surfing. TacosVegetarianos With Seasonal Sautéed Vegetables

FOR THE BLACK BEANS: 2 cups black beans 1 tablespoon red onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 100 ml. cold press coconut oil 20 grams ginger root “Tres Chiles” olive oil infusion, to taste In a saucepan over medium heat sauté coconut oil, ginger and onion, cook until transparent. Add garlic and black beans with some of the bean broth. Boil at low heat for 5 minutes. Add Tres Chiles oil to flavor. Smash the beans until smooth and thick, add salt to taste.

8 Purple Corn Tortillas or White Corn Tortillas (GMO free Creole Corn) Preheat grill to medium heat, sprinkle tortillas with water and toast until hot. Cover one side with the prepared black beans, sprinkle with goat cheese, and add sautéed vegetables. Complete with avocado, sprouts, and basil. Close the tortilla as you would a taco. Goes perfectly with a green tomatillo sauce.

Some years ago during the summer, there appeared a tea room in San Pancho; Darjeeling, a space decorated with pieces of art and objects from different periods: record covers, antique suitcases, and Victorian style furniture that evoke history while making you feel at home.
