#MYPHELI OURPHELI Dear Pheli Phelindaba #MyPheli #OURPHELI Without any doubt the year 2020 has been one of the most challenging years for most of us. The plans we made for the year simply could not materialize and most people found themselves either out of a job or even more pressured financially. This year has forced us to review our own lives and look at what is important and what is simply nice to have. We are hoping that you as a Phelian have taken some time to reflect on this and use the learnings for future. As some intelligent guy said, do not let a good disaster go to waste.

There is no guarantee that we will not face this challenge again and by the look of things, most have let down their guard when it comes to the Covid regulations. This could mean that a second phase is slowly approaching. What is important for us is that we are better prepared for this and don’t find ourselves in the same space we were this year. And I am not talking about stocking up on booze. Yes, that is important for some but look at the bigger picture and think about how you prepare financially in order to sustain yourself and your loved ones.

In this issue, we got to speak with one of South Africa’s biggest giants, Judge Dikgang Moseneke, who challenges all of us to rise and take charge of our lives. We also got to speak to some prominent Phelians who have been through some of the challenges that we face daily but managed to pull themselves up and attain success.

We urge you to read these stories, and maybe, you could be just as inspired as we are!!!

Proud patron of Pheli The beginning I grew up in Atteridgeville from a very pioneering family. Amongst other things my family also owned a shop and all the elders in our family had relatively good jobs, so we were well taken care of. Many would consider me as someone that was more privileged than most of my peers. I was raised in a family with a very strong value system and a lot of discipline. This meant that even during school holidays when I came home from boarding school, I spent all my time working at the family shop in Ramohoebo square.

This left little time for being idle as even being 30 minutes late coming home resulted in a family disciplinary hearing. Even though, growing up I didn’t always follow these rules willingly, I have grown to appreciate and value these teachings as they have contributed immensely to the person I am today.

First signs of leadership and an entrepreneurial mind As a young boy I attended multiple schools including Marematlou, JJ de Jong, Iona Convent, CBC, Patogeng and St Marks. Attending these diverse schools also helped with shaping my world view. The first real indication of my entrepreneurial mind showed up when I was attending my high school in St Marks where my peers and I started a fundraising activity to raise money for the first TV that the school had. I was then also involved in the school magazine and even passed my matric as the first president of the SRC. In Grade 11, myself and my business economics class created a tuck-shop for the school. We named it “Populamas”. This was not your ordinary tuck-shop as we ran it like a professional business, where I was the MD. We raised money by allowing students to invest in the business by buying shares.

The students bought each share for R1 and by the time we shut this down we had were able to show a 30% growth in their investment, meaning they received R1.30 for each share that they bought.

Introduction to the real world I passed my matric with good results even though I did not put a lot of effort into studying which enabled me to get into the University of the Western Cape. I got a shock to the system when I realised that unlike high school, you cannot succeed at varsity without studying. I really blew it all away and only passed a few subjects so I had to come back to Johannesburg. I then enrolled at Midrand Campus and with that came the fast Jo’burg partying life, which resulted in me scraping through the first year and eventually dropping out in the second year.

During my tenure in Midrand Campus, myself, Phares Nhlanganiso Mkhwanazi (Owner: Medu Capital) and Lwazi Bam (Outgoing CEO of Deloitte Africa) started a bookkeeping business called Ubuntu bookkeepers. We were offered an opportunity by Deloitte to join them however I did not take up this opportunity as I already had another offer.

I eventually had to pull myself together and find a job. I did various jobs as I was still finding himself including working at Alexander Forbes as an administrator. The most significant move I made at this time was when I decided to leave a job that had security at Alexander Forbes to sell gym membership at Health and Racquet. My father was very supportive in all my decisions but always told me that, whatever decision I made, I need to ensure that I understood the consequences and was willing to live with them.

First big career decision The reason I decided to leave Alexander Forbes was that with the salary I received there, I couldn’t afford much. The salary could mainly pay for the car instalment and insurance so I was forced to hustle to get by. I remember after the first month at Health and Racquet, I went back to AF to show my colleagues my pay cheque as what I was earning at Alexander Forbes as a salary was equal to the tax deduction at my new job.

Health and Racquet was very sales oriented and they invested a lot of money in training. This job also helped me in building a lot of relationships as I networked a lot. I have kept ongoing relationships with most of the people that I met then and ended up going into business with some of them. These people, especially the older ones supported me in many other ways and I will always respect that part of my journey.

Business attempt After some time at Health and Racquet I decided to start my own business. I opened up a detergent store in Joubert Park in Johannesburg. I was very ambitious but clearly, I wasn’t ready. Going in I believed that I could take on the big companies at that time. I must admit that back then I did not understand the power of branding. Naivety is sometimes a good thing as it gives you the confidence that you wouldn’t ordinarily have if you knew the facts. The business ended up failing, not because of the market but it failed due to my lack of discipline. I was still partying then and couldn’t keep on top of the operations.

The power of the untamed spirit I went back into the job market after the failed business attempt. An opportunity presented itself at Rothmans through a friend and cousin who worked there. He was given a promotion then and needed a replacement for his current role. He came to convince me to go for the role as he knew I was the right candidate for the job. I applied and ended up getting the role.

This is where I got exposed to the Remgro (Rupert) thinking. I was very observant and made sure that I got very close to the MD, which some didn’t like. The white managers didn’t like my spirit as it wasn’t tamed. They also didn’t like that I defeated them. This went to a point where I was falsely accused of sexual harassment. Needless to say, the people backtracked when I insisted that this matter goes to a disciplinary hearing. I did however build a good relationship with the provincial manger, who liked my energy and thinking.

Business with Bob Mabena From there on I went back into business again. I joined my close friend at the time, the late Bob Mabena in starting Mabena Entertainment. After building this business many other celebrities started following suit. In order to differentiate ourselves, we then decided that we needed to depersonalize this business from Bob. We were on holiday in Mozambique drinking the local beer there called 2M when we decided on the new name for our business. It made sense to call it 2M as both our surnames started with the letter M but it just didn’t have a nice ring to it. We then decided to rather call in in the same way that the locals there did “DoisM”. We did exceptionally well and ended up hosting one of the biggest concerts called “Who is the king of Kwaito”. We did very well and followed this up with other similar concerts around the country. Unfortunately, between October and January we lost a lot of money and ended up with a huge debt that we couldn’t get out of. We then agreed to shut this down and split the debt. I took over the company to protect Bob’s brand at that time. #MYPHELI MAGAZINE

Back to reality and grabbing opportunity by the horns When I was expecting my first child I decided to get a proper job. I spoke to my friend and mentor, Mr. Kuben Pillay who is originally from Laudium. He was the divisional CEO: Advertising Division at Primedia and he became group CEO and then Chairman. Kuben had previously hired Bob as a business development executive, which Bob didn’t enjoy. When Bob went for a job interview at SABC for a GM role, they gave him an executive role, he asked me to support him in breaking the news to leave Primedia as Kuben was my mentor and this would cushion the blow. We agreed to meet but Bob could unfortunately not make it. As fate would have it Kuben asked me if I was interested in coming to Primedia.

Bob lobbied hard internally for me and after an interview with the key decision makers, I ended up getting the job. I subsequently stayed there for 12yrs.

Making the decision between career and money An opportunity to become the CEO of the Mall Division later presented itself. When an opportunity is facing you then you should ask yourself “what am I looking for?” Am I Iooking to grow my career, money or both and which do you prioritise? It is very important in life to always differentiate between career and economic wealth. The boss for this role was one of the most brilliant minds in media in SA who pioneered transit media. He was part of the team that pioneered star taxi music, a music cassette with the latest hits with adverts in between which was given for free to taxi drivers. This grew into branding taxis, taxi ranks, trains, transit radio and TV. I made the decision to choose career over money. I received a normal increase but I had an end in mind. After a year in the job, the financial rewards followed as I ensured that I outperformed. I was a CEO for 10 years and learnt a lot about business. I learnt a lot about what I do today from the job Being Molefi - The journey of self-discovery After also running a business on the side, I decided to go at it full time. I tried structuring a business deal with Primedia however this didn’t work out. We went through about 80 names before we agreed on the business name “Avidity”. Avidity means doing things with passion. This also coincided with the time where a friend who had made a lot of money came to see me and he was more humble than when he didn’t have money. He told me he was going on a sabbatical into Lesotho to give out Bibles with a preacher. I was also on a journey of self-discovery so I went home and asked his wife.” What is my purpose? Why do I exist?” Surely, I can’t just be a consumer. We went through the motions and discovered that the one thing I was consistent with, was my passion for pioneering. I like starting things and building things.

Ultimately, I realised through my wife that I tend to inspire. I am always looking at things positively and thinking about what they could be. I like making people feel the possibility of what could be.

I started setting goals that were not linked to money. I created a document that I still use today called “Being Molefi”. If I could meet the perfect Molefi today what would that person be? I aspire to be that guy every day of my life. One of my goals would be to mentor or speak around the importance of being yourself and understanding why you exist and why you are on this planet. There are more important things that God has put you on this planet for.

Living your purpose I was doing a course this year called God’s vision God’s mission which is about the flow of Grace. It says God gives you talents for you to gift others. The ones that receive thank God for you having been present and the talent comes back. It is never-ending. #MYPHELI MAGAZINE

The problem is once most of us receive the talents, we close the tap, and we don’t allow the flow to happen. Being Molefi is centered around understanding your gift, your passion and your purpose. Living your purpose every day. Purpose is too big and you can never feel that you are done.

My wife is very different from me. She has identified her purpose as that of helping people out everyday.

At any given moment where she is able to help, she will do so without hesitation. She lives her purpose differently.

Giving Back When you anchor your life around purpose it implies that all you are focused on is giving back. Purpose is more about others than about yourself. Avidity is built with that vision, it is owned by myself, my immediate family, extended family and my foundation. About 23 families are shareholders in the business.

As the eldest grandson I want to give something to my broader family, with Moloantoa foundation being the biggest shareholder. This is my legacy for my children. The best gift that my kids can give me is continuing with this legacy.

The importance of good values There was a point in my life when I was fighting with my boss due to the values that I held and was not willing to trade. I ended up going to counselling and seeing a therapist once a week. Seeing a therapist is like going to a GP. He is a GP of the brain. They give you better perspective of why you behave in a particular way. My mentor Kuben Pillay also played an important role as he gave me perspective about what is important. According to my wife, he was my reset button. The bottom line is your values. It is the only true asset that you have that no one can take from you. My challenges helped me with my resolve and believing more in those values. The best place to go and plant your values is with God as the soil there is ready and the values are in line with what he expects of us.

My kids are going to become what I stand for. Our daughters are going to marry us. When they look for a partner they will emulate what they see at home. I definitely want to continue instilling these values. In life when the challenges come it is easy to go back to the values that were instilled in you.

My dream for Pheli and South Africa as a whole I would like to see us organise ourselves better as Christians. I know it’s a bit selfish, however South Africa is mostly Christian. I believe our future should be anchored around our faith. By being better organized as Christians we can be able to create structures that give us support. Why are we not having Christian men speaking about manly Christian things? Why are we not having Christian youth speaking about their issues? Why are we not strengthening the family structures through our faith?

Why are we not speaking about how to operate businesses the Christian way?

We need to champion the following 1. Be in union about effecting equitability – Making sure that everybody has an opportunity to prosper.

We all need to achieve abundance so that there can be order. Once we have order then we can beautify the world and glorify God. #MYPHELI MAGAZINE

Leadership that is based on grace, passion and purpose – Focus on choosing a problem in the world that you want to solve by utilizing your God given talents and purpose, instead of chasing money or survival. The money will follow. Our youth need to be driven by purpose and not consumerism or individualism. Our culture as black people is grounded on purpose and anchored around humanity.

3. Advocate fairness as a Godly principle – We need to advocate for fairness based on race, gender, differently abled and youth. As we criticize the Government we need to also ask, has business done their part? Has business transformed South Africa? Are the labour unions championing transformation through their influence and owned programs?

4. Servanthood – Servanthood is about contributing to the change of society without any expectation of return. We need to unite our communities behind BOTHO-HUMANITY-UBUNTUMENSDOM. Humanity is about “we are because I am” and “I am because we are”. Servanthood glorifies God while achieving abundance, order and beautification. It’s about assisting your community in creating entrepreneurship and job opportunities, encouraging healthy living and conserving your environment, ensuring law and order and leveraging sports, arts and culture as a community unifier.

5. Celebration of excellence - How do we document our stories because it’s our heritage. People like Ntate Sam Motsoenyane who was the president of Nafcoc come to mind. He pioneered the starting of African Bank. This was done with black money in the 70s. This is the kind of story that we need to tell. I am working on establishing a movement called “Inspiring SA”. Look at what Master KG has done in breaking a global record of the most ever viewed video on YouTube. but we are not celebrating him. Let us celebrate global excellence across races. The late Graham Mackay the past CEO of SABMiller, took SAB from a South African company to the second biggest brewer in the world. Koos Becker of Naspers has transformed a local media business to one of the largest technology and internet business in the world. Phuthuma Nhleko of MTN took the company from being South African into one of the largest developing markets mobile network operators in the world. Black Coffee is currently one of the top 10 DJ’s in the world. We have greatness around us, and we need to celebrate it.

In a nutshell my dream is to live in and contribute towards a Godly equitable world of excellence. If we can become our own inspiration, then the next generations will do amazing things. This goes beyond race, it is about equitability.

The world seems to attribute success to acquiring obscene amounts of money. In your view, what is success?

Finding your purpose is the ultimate measure of success.

If you were not doing what you are currently doing, what would you be doing?

I would be an Engineer; I like creating things that never existed before.

Innovent was established 16 years ago, with just a desk and a phone. It has since grown monumentally, employs 200 people and has an annual turnover of 150 million. That is incredible. How did you and your partner DJ accomplish this?

We were fortunate. We started a business in an environment that was supportive to new businesses. Hard work also played a major role in what we managed to achieve.

It took you 9 months to get your first client. What kept you from giving up and kept you going?

We believed in what we were doing and never doubted the value that we were bringing to clients. It was only a question of time before we tasted success

Two Chartered accountants, running an asset rental and management company. How did you get your concept/idea for your business?

We had been working in the leasing industry for several years. We noticed the gaps in the offering that was available in the market and we decided to fill those gaps.

What are the advantages of leasing equipment instead of buying it?

The biggest advantage is the fact that the client does not have to outlay cash to acquire assets. It’s the most costeffective method of acquiring assets. The client is able to use their capital for activities that generate a return for their business. Leasing allows the client to get the latest technology without the burden of paying for it upfront.

The client matches the expense of acquiring an asset with its useful life.

What is the one advice you would give to someone who just started a business? Also, what do you wish you knew when you started?

The key is to stay in business, the longer you are in business, the easier it becomes. I wish I knew that it takes twice as long as you expected and costs twice as much as you budgeted, to start a business.

To what do you attribute the profuse success of your business?

We were extremely fortunate. Banks were still willing to lend money, unlike today when it is almost impossible to get financial assistance.

A lot of people who aspire to be their own bosses and go into business have a misconception about the journey.

They imagine immeasurable amounts of money right from inception, coming in to the office late and leaving at their own time, giving instructions and just overall having the time of their lives. What does it really look like, especially in the beginning and what does it entail to be your own boss?

It’s is long hours at the office including working on weekends. It’s about building networks and client relations. In the beginning, you have to do everything yourself, including buying the office coffee, delivering documents, writing proposals etc. There is no one to delegate to. You have to get your hands dirty.

What is your role in the business?

I am the Chief Financial Officer. I look after the finance function of the business. I also do business development.

How important is choosing the right partner in a business and choosing the right location and how does one know for sure that they have the right partner and location?

Choosing the right partner is the most important aspect when starting a business. The location, in my view is not so important. With technology, you can work from anywhere in the world, but the wrong partner can break your business. When you share the same values with your partner, then you have a chance of succeeding. Business is tough enough on its own, let alone having to deal with a difficult partner on top of that.

How does a person know that a business idea is viable or not?

You never know, you just have to try it out. If it doesn’t work, then you will know for sure that it wasn’t viable.

Discovery was your first client and you have retained that relationship. What is your secret in keeping your clients and in procuring new ones?

I think our clients have learned to trust us. They know that we would not do anything to jeopardise the relationship. Trust is everything, when it comes to business.

The business has expanded immeasurably and has branches in the UK, in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

What were the challenges your encountered in expanding to those parts of the world?

The red tape is almost insurmountable. It is really difficult to open a business in Africa. The company registration process is manual and tedious. Then you have to contend with the admin of opening bank accounts. Border operations are difficult to navigate. You really have to hire professionals in order to assist you along the way.

How important is communication when you have businesses outside your country of residence?

We have a weekly call with all our subsidiaries. That is the only way you can ensure that the business is still doing what it is intended to do. You cannot afford to take your finger off the pulse when you are in different jurisdiction.

How do you ensure that you are better than your competitors?

Keep evolving. Listen to what your customers want. Always be learning.

What gap is Innovent filling?

Assisting companies in acquiring assets that enable them to stay competitive.

Do you think entrepreneurs are born or made?

I think they are born. There is a certain way that entrepreneurs respond to challenges that isn’t learnt. They see opportunities where others see obstacles.

What qualifies a person to be a great entrepreneur?

I’m not sure I am qualified to answer such a question but I would guess that certain attributes like vision, persistence, optimism, integrity contribute to making a great entrepreneur.

What has been your greatest victory, not only in business but in life overall?

Being able to stay in business throughout the global financial crisis and continuing to expand globally has been our proudest achievement. The number of students that we have assisted with bursaries and support has been most fulfilling. Changing people’s lives for the better is the most rewarding part of being in business.

Future plans for Innovent?

We want to expand into more countries in Africa, Europe and the United States.

& t ut u O bo A Cancer Charity Walk The Lehlohonolo 5K Cancer Charity Walk is inspired by Lehlohonolo Moagi- a cancer survivor and many others who are battling with the disease. The overall objective of the event was to highlight cancer awareness by giving people information on the different kinds of cancers out there, what kind of treatments are available and to make people aware that cancer is not a death sentence.

They partnered with Matseke primary school, where their event was hosted. There were guest speakers who are cancer survivors, from various organizations such as #Cancermustfall and Sedumedi Hope foundation. There were participants from their other partner Mathabatha Logistics, that assisted in catering for the event. Black Night Bikers assisted with controlling of traffic for the walk. 7RPM along with 012 were also part of the organizers of the event.

Moagi sports who were the main organizers of the event, plan to do more of these awareness events/campaigns. Their objective is wellness and to fight cancer through sports. There is a need to teach people about healthy living, getting tested, being aware of certain diseases, the importance to do regular checks and maintaining a balance healthy living.

MTN HANDS OVER A COMPUTER CENTRE TO BOKGONI TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL The MTN Foundation presented the Bokgoni Technical High School with a top class facility of computers and data, as a reward for the school in archiving top results for the 2019 matric results.

Education through ICT is one of the focus areas of the MTN Foundation’s strategy. The Foundation aims to contribute to the national quality of teaching and learning by providing ICT solutions to disadvantaged schools in South Africa. It has done this through its flagship Schools Connectivity program, which provides a holistic and comprehensive ICT solution that is structured around three pillars: The effective use and integration of technology and digital content in the classroom through the construction of multimedia centers, provision of equipment and curriculum aligned software.

Teacher training to ensure that educators are equipped with the necessary skills to effectively use the technology in teaching.

Provision of internet support for 24 months per school.

The reward ceremony was attended by the District Director H.E. Hilda Kekana, along side with the representatives from MTN Ms Jacqui O’Sullivan who is the MTN SA Corporate Affairs Executive and also the Bokgoni Technical High School Principal Mr Sono; leaners and teachers of the school where there to receive this important gift.

#BIG SISTA TALK with Boniswa Maake

TOPIC: I AM NOT MY HAIR, OR AM I??

Over the past couple of months, the black hair debate has made an appearance yet again, as it always does every so often. I usually try and avoid getting too drawn into the social media debates, not because I have nothing to say but simply the opposite and because some of these social media debates are usually just packed with emotion and not much facts. The Clicks debacle got all of us in our feels as we felt so offended by the whole thing and we suddenly saw some women and even Slay Queens taking off their weaves for 5 minutes, taking selfies and vowing never to set foot at any Clicks store ever again. Yeah right! This has since fizzled down and we are back to where we were, with Clicks actually showing YOY growth in terms of revenue. Well let’s not make it too much about them but let’s rather get back to the real issue at hand.

The debate around black hair is something that goes way back. Black hair has gone through a major evolution through time and there are plenty of articles that have been written about this. In a nutshell, way back in ancient times hair was seen as something very closely linked to a person’s identity. Just by looking at someone’s hair you could tell their nationality, tribe, family background and even social status. Some of this still holds true today although these lines have been blurred to some level. With the beginning of the slave trade and colonization where lots of effort was placed on ensuring that the black person is made to feel inferior, hair was also used as an instrument.

Black women were forced to hide their hair and those with fairer skin and a straighter hair texture were treated better. Even today there are certain traditionally black hairstyles that are restricted in some industries and there are some people that still believe that straighter hair and lighter complexions are better.

According to some scholarly articles, The rise of the Black consciousness movements in the 60s,led by Stephen Bantu Biko started an evolution and created an awareness around issues related to black pride and a resistance against the oppressor. This movement was unapologetic and encouraged black people to recognize their self-worth and reclaim their dignity. Natural black hair featured immensely in this era as black people started taking pride in their identities and aimed to keep their hair as natural as possible. This in an attempt to exhibit pride and also as a form of rebellion.

This in my view was a much needed transition and contributed immensely to the pride that we carry today as a black nation. We have started seeing this movement emerge again in the 21st century with black women challenging the stereotypical and more European definition of beauty. This is definitely something to be proud of and I salute all the Queens that are embracing this movement. #MYPHELI MAGAZINE

When it comes to hair being used as a form of expression, nothing much has changed. Black women today still use their hair as a way of expressing themselves. Whether you and I agree with what that expression is about is beside the point. We have come a long way towards enabling women to be independent and to speak their truth, however when it comes to hair the tables are turned. All of a sudden we feel like we have the right to dictate the hairstyle that women must wear. Somehow, we have convinced ourselves that we are within our right to do this. Case in point, the Clicks debacle. Where as black people we had an opportunity to stand together and fight the racial insinuations, some opted to use this as an opportunity to attack the black women that choose to wear weaves. Similarly with the crowning of the gorgeous Miss South Africa, Shudufhadzo Musida. Where we were celebrating the crowning of an African Queen, some used this as another opportunity to attack black women that choose to wear their crowns differently. It’s as if we are hell-bent on continuing the oppression against our own sisters.

As all of this is taking place I find myself singing India Arie’s 90s hit, where some of the lyrics go something like “I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations…I am the soul that lives within”. Ma2000 please go and listen to this song for context. This song for me, hits the nail on the head. Anyone that knows me personally, knows that I am such an advocate for black women. That I take so much pride in my cultural identity as well as my beautiful shade of melanin.

This being said, I take offense in being told that when I wear a weave, I consciously or subconsciously want to be white. Is there a measure of blackness that goes up when your hair is natural and goes down when you change your hairstyle? If so, who holds this measuring stick? Like, does this even make sense? This natural that you speak about, does it also apply to the European brands that you keep flashing on social media or the side chicks that you meet in the clubs or does it only apply to the women that you want to control? Isn’t this some form of oppression on its own?

There are a lot of reasons black women choose to wear different hairstyles and it saddens me that I have to sit here and explain this, but here goes. These can range from medical, to the maintenance effort, social status or even because they believe they look better in certain hairstyles than others.

Whatever the reason, it shouldn’t matter to you. I cannot speak on behalf of every black woman out there but for me, it’s just not that deep. I just simply like variety. This might sound vain but I usually say to my friends that I could make any hairstyle look good. Hairstyles for me are like clothes, it all depends on my mood. If I feel like going short, I will do that and if I feel rocking braids or anything else for that matter I will do that. Ultimately I am exercising my freedom of choice, the freedom that many sacrificed their lives for, so do not take that away from me. For me, it shouldn’t even matter which hairstyle I choose to wear as it does not change who I am, what I believe in and what my dreams are…..

I know that I am much more that my hair and if you cared enough, and stopped focusing on enforcing your beliefs on me then we could perhaps start giving attention to the real issues that are facing us today…

There is so much I can say about this topic and I hope one day we can sit around the table and discuss this. In the meantime, I will leave you with wise words from a historical leader …

Our journey is worth travelling only when the destination is known. Let us talk about the power of planning and positioning ourself for success as we prepare for the year 2021 and beyond. Reimagining your life for growth can only be possible when we master the art of visualizing our SUCCESS and VICTORY before it comes into being. Most successful people we admire, read about, who live among us, or even those we see on TV and other platforms; started with seeing success, imagining it, and working hard at it before it manifested.

It starts with knowing your DESTINATION before starting your journey. If at this point you don’t know where you are headed in your life, please put in the work to figure it out. Create your VISION board or revisit it, to check if you are still in agreement with your desired or initial destination. Those who hold the POWER are the ones who have the ability to IMAGINE. You have all the power when you know where you are headed to.

If you are going to study at a tertiary institution next year, did you apply? if not, what’s stopping you? What information do you need and what information do you have? Have you gathered information you need about your product or how to market it? If you want to pursue performing arts: have you done your research so you know where to start? If you want a driver’s license? Did you book for your learner’s license on the Traffic department website? Do you have the K53 book? If you are going to the next Grade, have you started imagining a study plan for 2021, do you know what went well, what went wrong and what you need to fix for a better academic year? What are you reading now for inspiration? Or do you spend twelve hours a day and more going through WhatsApp statuses? What is your padkos/mofago wa gao in this journey of yours? Do you carry junk (gossip, bad behavior) or healthy meals to sustain you? (books, engagements that build and challenge you?

Who do you need on this journey? It has been proven to be hard and lonely to embark on any journey alone.

FARMER KILLINGS. A CALL FOR ACTION Author: Mr Peter Nkosi - A Social Activist: Metsweding Area

With the recent brutal attacks of the two farmers at Spitkop, an open debate about violent farm killings and their impact on the socio-economic challenges is of necessity and great importance.

This, among other things is a great threat to food security. The Friday protest/march organised mainly by white farmers signalled an important step towards crystalizing the role of communities to hold the executive accountable. Also, it signalled a new culture that has been accustomed with mainly black communities when it comes to exercising their rights to register their dissatisfaction on any contemporary issues. On a positive front, we need to commend the speedy arrest effected by SAPS in ensuring that the alleged perpetrators are behind bars.

We need to congratulate the organisers of the peaceful protest/march. The protest was incident free and managed to raise the plight of farming communities within the Bronkhorstspruit landscape. I am quite certain that the event has galvanised more sympathy and moral support which is much needed during this difficult period of seeking justice for the Spitkop two. The influence of the Senekal protest actions has been noted with all its shortcomings and the incidents of the discharging of firearms and burning of SAPS property should be dealt with in accordance to the laws of the Republic of South Africa. This event brought about certain positive spinoffs of human solidarity by those who felt aggrieved and needed to escalate their frustrations to the attention of the powers that be.

The brutal killing of Brendin Horner should remain a rallying point to all law-abiding citizens to seek justice during this difficult period of rebuilding our country in the new democratic dispensation. This incident has received so much publicity, both negatively and positively.

Importantly, on the flipside, this incident has once more brought about the issues of farm killings into the centre of public debate.

As South Africans, we should refuse to be divided along racial lines. The murders of farmers remain a sticking point, given that they are on top of the pyramid that ensures food security.

Notably, every murder diminishes us a nation, it matters not where the victim stands of the food chain, every killing undermines our collective humanity. The brutal killing of farmers should concern us all as residents of Bronkhorstspruit, as such, it is important that we distil all the information at our disposal in finding a long-lasting solution.

As we do that, it is also important to get much broader views about the reasons and the causes of this senseless killings of our farmers. The whole concept of a separate crime category for farm attacks and murder of largely white farmers in the category of commercial farms has over the years become highly politicised.

Currently there is a strong perception held by others in society that many of perpetrators are illegal non-South Africans who are mainly employed illegally in many farming operations. It is alleged that these people are paid peanuts and this in turn makes them vulnerable to colluding with the perpetrators in giving out key information about the farmer’s households and other intelligent information. Again, this generalisation does not necessary enable the state and other important stakeholders, such as Farming Organisation to agree to this sentiment or notion as the sole contributor towards this violent farm attacks, which has by the way increased especially here in Gauteng.

If one sets aside the emotive, often media-driven and contrasting views of farm murders and farm attacks over the years, there has been several research studies looking at the issue from a research perspective. It is recorded that almost 99 percent of the attacks on farms and smallholdings were motivated primarily by robbery, but also often resulted in the crimes of murder, assault and rape. (Britz & Seyesi, 1998: 18) People who live on farms in rural areas are particularly vulnerable to armed farm attacks where response times are lengthy because of the remoteness of farms. This offers the attackers an opportunity to linger on the premises for longer, with a greater chance of the victim being subjected to a high degree of violence and brutality, compared to crimes in urban areas where police, security companies and neighbours arrive sooner to render necessary help.

In conclusion, I personally support the call for justice in the matter currently at court. I echo the sentiments of the COSATU representative who formed part of the court appearance on Friday and pledged solidarity against the brutal killings of farmers. Fast-forward, it would be important that as a community, regardless of colour, we should come together in condemning these senseless killings but also very importantly, start educating each other on the importance and value of human solidarity, especially as it relates to approaching common issues such as fighting of crime and the killing of law-abiding citizens mercilessly. We need to hold each other’s hand in calling for government to do more in ensuring that the Rural Safety Strategy is realised. ‘’Beyond the immediate human suffering, lack of security and stability in our rural and farming community causes serious disruption to our economy. It threatens to bring reduced growth or production, loss of wages and profits and in time unemployment. It brings the spectre of deepening poverty, and potential social instability and upheaval.’’

In the previous article we spoke about a gland that serves multiple purposes for women, the breast. In this article we pay special attention to the prostate, a small gland that is tucked just under the male bladder and serves as a seminal fluid bag for reproductive cells (sperm) to pass through easily through the urethra. This gland like any other part of the body has a potential of having its cell replacement process malfunction resulting in a cancer known as the prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men globally.

What causes prostate cancer?

Like all other cancers, prostate cancer is influenced by a variety of risk factors such as your genetic make up, what you eat and the ingestion of toxins into your body.

While some risk factors such as age and genetics are uncontrollable, others are in your control. Smoking and alcohol is a risk factor for all forms of cancers. Obesity can also lead to colon cancer.

How does one tell if they are developing prostate cancer?

Because cancer in general is a slow developing process it may take a while before it is diagnosed. Commonly cancer does not have any symptoms at the beginning.

Because the prostate is situated near the bladder the common symptoms are around abnormal urination. You may find that immediately after urinating you feel like you need to urinate again. Over time, prostate cancer progresses to other parts of the body causing a variety of symptoms in the body. In my short journey of being a type 2 Diabetic I have learned that one of the most important things in better managing this disease is meal preparation and constantly checking your sugar levels. This undoubtably will initially feel like a drag. In the long run, if you make it fun by creating nice, easy and affordable meals with what you already have in your fridge you will find that it truly does get easier with time. In the long run you will not have to check your blood glucose levels round the clock. You will to a certain extend know how your body feels like when the sugar levels are low for example. Your sugar levels will always grant you an idea of your Glucose trends and how you are doing. This will make your journey easier. A lot of problems that contribute to making Diabetes unmanageable are a result of not preparing meals on time because it forces you to eat things you shouldn’t eat because you are too hungry and cannot wait. Every Diabetic should by right have a Diabetic testing machine. This is of the essence because it gives directive of what actions to take after the results. The glucose will either be too low, just ok or too high. Each requiring a different reaction. Should you find yourself with very low sugar levels that are dangerous, drink a glass of Coke or eat a sweet. Yes, coke is not generally good for Diabetics because of its highly sugar content. The flip side though is that because of its high sugar content, it is a quick fix for when you are in danger of Hypoglycaemia.

Coke is both bad and good, depending on the situation. The irony here.

Also, it is true that Type 2 Diabetes is a lifestyle disease. If you do change your lifestyle, it behaves. Well, mostly. In 2009 I was on alternative health solutions. I was off medication for 8 months. This, however requires the ultimate sacrifice and discipline. I found that when you follow routine, you eventually form a lifestyle. With time it does not feel hard anymore. In those 8 months I woke up every month and drank Parsley water on an empty stomach, exercised and ate a lot of greens. I did not eat fast food or fizzy drinks. If I really wanted something not within my diet such as Pizza, which was very rare, I would eat one piece of Pizza instead of maybe 3.

If we can get sick from food, surely, we can heal from food as well. You can never go wrong with anything green. For 8 months my sugar levels were that of a normal person. My sugar levels were controlled. How it was explained to me was that although my pancreas did not miraculously start producing sufficient insulin and my body was still not necessarily taking it in as it should, my diet and lifestyle allowed me to live on small insulin. Because I was eating good food and exercising, that very small insulin was enough. I did not need more insulin because I was not eating food that required that much. I assume when they say you heal; this is what they mean.

What is also important is that the people around you know how to help you. The people around you should know how to check your sugar levels and how to help you should the need arise.
