ORESTES IN MOSUL MILO RAU
NL Aeschylos’ Oresteia geldt als een van de stichtingsmythes van de westerse beschaving: de bloedwraak wordt vervangen door rechtspraak, integratie en verzoening. Theatermaker Milo Rau laat de tragedie haar klassieke grootsheid, maar linkt het verhaal aan hedendaagse vraagstukken. Met zijn internationale ploeg trok Rau naar Mosul, waar IS het kalifaat uitriep. Hoe kan een wandaad verzoend worden? Hoe kan de niet-eindigende keten van geweld stoppen? Wat te doen met strijders en slachtoffers wanneer een oorlog voorbij is? En wat is de relatie van het Westen met de regio waar onze olie vandaan komt? EN Aeschylus’s Oresteia counts as one of the founding myths of western civilisation: the blood feud is replaced by jurisdiction, integration and reconciliation. While theatremaker Milo Rau leaves the tragedy to its classic grandeur, he links the story to contemporary issues. With his international team Rau journeyed to Mosul where ISIS declared a caliphate. How can such a heinous crime be reconciled? How can the never-ending chain of violence be stopped? What should be done with fighters and victims once the war is past? And what is the relation of the West with the region from where our oil originates?

OVER Milo Rau NL Milo Rau is sinds 2018/2019 de artistiek directeur van NTGent. Handelsmerk van Rau: zijn re-enactments, theatrale reconstructies van historische gebeurtenissen, gebaseerd op uitgebreid onderzoek, vaak gespeeld door mensen die er direct bij betrokkenen waren. Exemplarisch daarvoor zijn The Congo Tribunal over de oorlog in Oost-Congo, Hate Radio over de genocide in Rwanda, of The Moscow Trials over het proces tegen de punkband Pussy Riot. Het gaat er niet alleen meer om de wereld voor te stellen, het gaat erom de wereld te veranderen.
About Milo RAU EN Milo Rau has been artistic director of NTGent since the 2018/2019 season. Rau's trademark: his re-enactments, theatrical reconstructions of historical events, based on extensive research, often played by those directly involved. Exemplary are The Congo Tribunal on the war in eastern Congo, Hate Radio on the genocide in Rwanda, or The Moscow Trials on the trial against the punk band Pussy Riot. It's no longer about representing the world, it's about changing it.
